THE National Council of State, NCS, unwittingly sowed the seed of confusion on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 when it “approved” two minimum wages for the country – N27, 000 for the lowest paid worker in Nigeria (Grade Level 1 Step 1), and the N30,000 minimum wage the Federal Government proposed for its staff. The Presidency has since forwarded the proposal to the National Assembly for legislative attention.

GL 01 S
The minimal yearly wage for FCSC staff, GL 01 S, is N226,800. This means that you will get N18,900 per one month.

GL 04 (S)
Grade level 04 Step (S) 1 receives N242,994 in a year.
This is meant for school graduates and comes to about N20,249 per month.

The minimum wage of 30,000 Naira is for the lowest paid worker in Nigeria which is Grade Level 1 Step 1 in the Federal Civil Service.

People with First School Leaving Certificates (Primary School education) are employed at Grade Level 1.
People with Senior Secondary Certificates are employed at Grade Level 4.
University graduates are employed at Grade Level 8.

A University graduate in the Federal Civil Service will NOT earn 30,000 Naira per month.
A teenager (18 years old) with only 6 years of Primary education will earn 30,000 Naira per month.

Graduates will be earning close to 100,000 Naira per month in the Federal Ministries. It will be much higher than 100,000 Naira if you are a University graduate in a parastatal or agency like CBN, FIRS, NCC, NITDA, NNPC etc.

In the United Kingdom, the minimum wage depends on age and category of worker and is paid per hour.

The National Minimum Wage is the minimum pay per hour almost all workers are entitled to by law. The rates below apply from 1 April 2018.

Ghana National Tripartite Committee (NTC) announced 10 per cent increase in the daily minimum wage for Ghanaian workers starting January 2019. The daily minimum wage has been raised to GHȻ10.65 from current GHȻ9.68.
There is an average of 22 working days in a month, so GHȻ10.65 x 22 days = GHȻ234.3 per month, which is equivalent to 16,418.06 Naira per month. If you work every day of the month, including Saturday and Sunday (30 days), you will be paid GHȻ10.65 x 30 days = GHȻ319.5 per month, which is equivalent to 22,388.27 Naira per month.

The Cameroon minimum wage is 36,270 CFA francs (22,395.76 Naira) per month applicable to all employees in all sectors.

The minimum wage in Ghana is determined on daily basis.

The minimum wage in South Africa is determined per hour.

The minimum wage in Nigeria and Cameroon is determined per month.

A boy or girl with only 6 years of education (Primary School) would have to consider whether to earn 30,000 Naira per month in Nigeria or less than 30,000 Naira per month in Ghana or Cameroon.

The National Minimum Wage Act sets South Africa's first National Minimum Wage at R20 an hour, equivalent to R3,500 per month, depending on the number of hours worked. The National Minimum Wage Act of South Africa came into force from January 1, 2019.

Nigeria does not pay workers per hour.

The UK Conservative government is set to announce plans for the introduction of lessons on homosexuality and transgenderism for primary school students, despite an official petition against the move, signed by over 100,000.

The Sunday Times reports that the new curriculum has been finalized after a six-month consultation with the Department of Education, and will be rolled out across UK schools starting from the 2020-21 educational year.

It will be taught to pupils from the age of five, and it will be illegal for parents to take their children out of the classroom for the lessons in secondary school, meaning that at least a term’s worth of sex education classes – and likely far more – will be attended by each student.

Ofsted says schools should teach pupils about same-sex couples

All children must learn about same sex couples regardless of their religious background, the head of Ofsted says.

Hundreds of parents protested outside a Birmingham school against it teaching pupils about same sex couples and gender identity.

Ofsted chief inspector Amanda Spielman told the BBC it was crucial children were exposed to differences in society.

She said it was important children knew "there are families that have two mummies or two daddies".

Parents of Muslim and Christian faith have held demonstrations outside Parkfield Community School in the Alum Rock area of the city, where children are taught about same sex couples through story books.

Protesters have claimed the lessons, part of the "No Outsiders" programme, contradict their faith.

They argued assistant head Andrew Moffat, who started the lessons and is gay, has been "promoting personal beliefs and convictions about universal acceptability of homosexuality as being normal and morally correct".

But Mrs Spielman said the lessons were "about making sure they [children] know just enough to know that some people prefer not to get married to somebody of the opposite sex and that sometimes there are families that have two mummies or two daddies".

"It's about making sure that children who do happen to realise that they themselves may not fit a conventional pattern know that they're not bad or ill."

In light of the protests, Mrs Spielman said there needed to be a "careful exploration of the middle ground" but lessons covering LGBT topics were important.

One mother, who wished to remain anonymous, accused the school of "planting ideas" in children's heads.

Her daughter attends Parkfield School and she said she was too young to be taught "what goes on in someone's bedroom".

"It's something that we would like to teach our children ourselves," she said. "It kind of feels like they're forcing it upon us."

She denied being homophobic but said "it's just not what we're about and we don't agree with it".

Mr Moffat told the BBC he had been receiving threats and "nasty emails" from parents who disagreed with the programme.

Mrs Spielman argued the lessons were less about "endless sex education" and more about understanding differences in society.

"The essence of democracy is that we don't all get our way," she said.

"We accept majority decision which means there will always be things that some of us don't like, but that is the very essence of it - accepting that we can't have 100% of what we want."

Solutions, she said, would be found in "sane, rational discussion, not protest".

However, the BBC understands more protests were being planned and some parents have said they would write to the government demanding a change in equality legislation.

The change, they hoped, would enable schools not to teach subjects that were not in line with religious beliefs.

Where are the fathers of these young black boys? Most of these boys are of Nigerian descent.

They all live in places where there is 24/7 electricity, water, gas, transportation. Education and health provided by the government. These are things which are not provided adequately in Nigeria where their parents or grandparents came from. Yet in Nigeria, poor young boys are not stabbing themselves to death. Instead in Nigeria, poor young boys without connections are competing to get the best academic results so as to get into a Federal University which will enable them either get a job or relocate abroad for a master's in order to lift their siblings and family from poverty.

The young black boys in the UK have no excuse. Not a single one.

The stabbings and violence amongst some young black men in London is linked to social deprivation and systemic discrimination, and several studies have been done to showcase this. When this trend of violence and stabbings was prevalent in Glasgow years ago amongst white youths, no one blamed their parents for it.

We will be threading on dangerous waters if we start blaming parents for the actions of their kids, it's not as simplistic as it sounds. There are much deeper factors at play here.

In recent developments, Monsanto and Bayer have merged into a powerful cartel which controls not only what we eat but also politicians, scientists and journalists.

Monsanto’s talk of ‘technology’ tries to hide its real objectives of control over seed where genetic engineering is a means to control seed,

“Monsanto is an agricultural company.

We apply innovation and technology to help farmers around the world produce more while conserving more.”

“Producing more, Conserving more, Improving farmers lives.”

These are the promises Monsanto India’s website makes, alongside pictures of smiling, prosperous farmers from the state of Maharashtra. This is a desperate attempt by Monsanto and its PR machinery to delink the epidemic of farmers’ suicides in India from the company’s growing control over cotton seed supply — 95 per cent of India’s cotton seed is now controlled by Monsanto.

Control over seed is the first link in the food chain because seed is the source of life. When a corporation controls seed, it controls life, especially the life of farmers.

Monsanto’s concentrated control over the seed sector in India as well as across the world is very worrying. This is what connects farmers’ suicides in India to Monsanto vs Percy Schmeiser in Canada, to Monsanto vs Bowman in the US, and to farmers in Brazil suing Monsanto for $2.2 billion for unfair collection of royalty.

Through patents on seed, Monsanto has become the “Life Lord” of our planet, collecting rents for life’s renewal from farmers, the original breeders.

Patents on seed are illegitimate because putting a toxic gene into a plant cell is not “creating” or “inventing” a plant. These are seeds of deception — the deception that Monsanto is the creator of seeds and life; the deception that while Monsanto sues farmers and traps them in debt, it pretends to be working for farmers’ welfare, and the deception that GMOs feed the world. GMOs are failing to control pests and weeds, and have instead led to the emergence of superpests and superweeds.

The entry of Monsanto in the Indian seed sector was made possible with a 1988 Seed Policy imposed by the World Bank, requiring the Government of India to deregulate the seed sector. Five things changed with Monsanto’s entry: First, Indian companies were locked into joint-ventures and licensing arrangements, and concentration over the seed sector increased. Second, seed which had been the farmers’ common resource became the “intellectual property” of Monsanto, for which it started collecting royalties, thus raising the costs of seed. Third, open pollinated cotton seeds were displaced by hybrids, including GMO hybrids. A renewable resource became a non-renewable, patented commodity. Fourth, cotton which had earlier been grown as a mixture with food crops now had to be grown as a monoculture, with higher vulnerability to pests, disease, drought and crop failure. Fifth, Monsanto started to subvert India’s regulatory processes and, in fact, started to use public resources to push its non-renewable hybrids and GMOs through so-called public-private partnerships (PPP).

In 1995, Monsanto introduced its Bt technology in India through a joint-venture with the Indian company Mahyco. In 1997-98, Monsanto started open field trials of its GMO Bt cotton illegally and announced that it would be selling the seeds commercially the following year. India has rules for regulating GMOs since 1989, under the Environment Protection Act. It is mandatory to get approval from the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee under the ministry of environment for GMO trials. The Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology sued Monsanto in the Supreme Court of India and Monsanto could not start the commercial sales of its Bt cotton seeds until 2002.
And, after the damning report of India’s parliamentary committee on Bt crops in August 2012, the panel of technical experts appointed by the Supreme Court recommended a 10-year moratorium on field trials of all GM food and termination of all ongoing trials of transgenic crops.

But it had changed Indian agriculture already.

Monsanto’s seed monopolies, the destruction of alternatives, the collection of superprofits in the form of royalties, and the increasing vulnerability of monocultures has created a context for debt, suicides and agrarian distress which is driving the farmers’ suicide epidemic in India. This systemic control has been intensified with Bt cotton. That is why most suicides are in the cotton belt.

An internal advisory by the agricultural ministry of India in January 2012 had this to say to the cotton-growing states in India — “Cotton farmers are in a deep crisis since shifting to Bt cotton. The spate of farmer suicides in 2011-12 has been particularly severe among Bt cotton farmers.”

The highest acreage of Bt cotton is in Maharashtra and this is also where the highest farmer suicides are. Suicides increased after Bt cotton was introduced — Monsanto’s royalty extraction, and the high costs of seed and chemicals have created a debt trap. According to Government of India data, nearly 75 per cent rural debt is due to purchase inputs. As Monsanto’s profits grow, farmers’ debt grows. It is in this systemic sense that Monsanto’s seeds are seeds of suicide.

The ultimate seeds of suicide is Monsanto’s patented technology to create sterile seeds. (Called “Terminator technology” by the media, sterile seed technology is a type of Gene Use Restriction Technology, GRUT, in which seed produced by a crop will not grow — crops will not produce viable offspring seeds or will produce viable seeds with specific genes switched off.) The Convention on Biological Diversity has banned its use, otherwise Monsanto would be collecting even higher profits from seed.

Monsanto’s talk of “technology” tries to hide its real objectives of ownership and control over seed where genetic engineering is just a means to control seed and the food system through patents and intellectual property rights.

A Monsanto representative admitted that they were “the patient’s diagnostician, and physician all in one” in writing the patents on life-forms, from micro-organisms to plants, in the TRIPS’ agreement of WTO. Stopping farmers from saving seeds and exercising their seed sovereignty was the main objective. Monsanto is now extending its patents to conventionally bred seed, as in the case of broccoli and capsicum, or the low gluten wheat it had pirated from India which we challenged as a biopiracy case in the European Patent office.

That is why we have started Fibres of Freedom in the heart of Monsanto’s Bt cotton/suicide belt in Vidharba. We have created community seed banks with indigenous seeds and helped farmers go organic. No GMO seeds, no debt, no suicides.

Need some help here guys. My Nigerian phone crashed, weather was too cold for the phone.
Problem is it crashed with my Nigerian banking apps, bigger problem is, I damaged my MTN sim in the process of trying to fit it into another phone, biggest problem is I have money in Nigerian banks which I can't access because I can only activate the apps via SMS to the registered SIM which is now damaged.
I can't also do it online cos I never activated online banking when I was in Nigeria.
