We’re not going back to normal Social distancing is here to stay for much more than a few weeks. It will upend our way of life, in some ways forever. by Gideon Lichfield Mar 17, 2020 MIT Technology Review https://www.technologyreview.com/s/615370/coronavirus-pandemic-social-distancing-18-months/ LagosismyHome: |
The UK Government has now downgraded COVID-19, they no longer see it as a high consequence infectious disease, they confirm mortality rate is low https://www.gov.uk/guidance/high-consequence-infectious-diseases-hcid High consequence infectious diseases (HCID) Guidance and information about high consequence infectious diseases and their management in England. Published 22 October 2018 Last updated 21 March 2020 — see all updates From: Public Health England Status of COVID-19 As of 19 March 2020, COVID-19 is no longer considered to be a high consequence infectious diseases (HCID) in the UK. The 4 nations public health HCID group made an interim recommendation in January 2020 to classify COVID-19 as an HCID. This was based on consideration of the UK HCID criteria about the virus and the disease with information available during the early stages of the outbreak. Now that more is known about COVID-19, the public health bodies in the UK have reviewed the most up to date information about COVID-19 against the UK HCID criteria. They have determined that several features have now changed; in particular, more information is available about mortality rates (low overall), and there is now greater clinical awareness and a specific and sensitive laboratory test, the availability of which continues to increase. The Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens (ACDP) is also of the opinion that COVID-19 should no longer be classified as an HCID. The need to have a national, coordinated response remains, but this is being met by the government’s COVID-19 response. Cases of COVID-19 are no longer managed by HCID treatment centres only. All healthcare workers managing possible and confirmed cases should follow the updated national infection and prevention (IPC) guidance for COVID-19, which supersedes all previous IPC guidance for COVID-19. This guidance includes instructions about different personal protective equipment (PPE) ensembles that are appropriate for different clinical scenarios. |

99% of Those Who Died From Virus Had Other Illness, Italy Says By Tommaso Ebhardt, Chiara Remondini, and Marco Bertacche 18 March 2020, 12:56 GMT Bloomberg https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-18/99-of-those-who-died-from-virus-had-other-illness-italy-says More than 99% of Italy’s coronavirus fatalities were people who suffered from previous medical conditions, according to a study by the country’s national health authority. After deaths from the virus reached more than 2,500, with a 150% increase in the past week, health authorities have been combing through data to provide clues to help combat the spread of the disease. The new study could provide insight into why Italy’s death rate, at about 8% of total infected people, is higher than in other countries. The Rome-based institute has examined medical records of about 18% of the country’s coronavirus fatalities, finding that just three victims, or 0.8% of the total, had no previous pathology. Almost half of the victims suffered from at least three prior illnesses and about a fourth had either one or two previous conditions. More than 75% had high blood pressure, about 35% had diabetes and a third suffered from heart disease. https://www.epicentro.iss.it/coronavirus/bollettino/Report-COVID-2019_17_marzo-v2.pdf |
