They should go to court and test the law on criminal defamation. I saw scenes of Seun Kuti's rambling video on the NL homepage yesterday night where 'Dele Farotimi was bragging at the beginning of the video before the warrant was issued by the court for his arrest that anybody who DOESN'T like what is in the "crappy book" he wrote should go to court. What pure arrogance is that! There are indications that the newly introduced foreign exchange market system by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, is the driving force behind the recent massive appreciation of Nigeria’s local currency, the Naira, against the world’s major currencies.
Bankers who spoke to Vanguard attributed the appreciation of the Naira to the Electronic Foreign Exchange Matching System (EFEMS), which commenced last Monday.
In a circular directing banks to go live in the use of the Bloomberg BMatch as the Electronic Foreign Exchange Matching System (EFEMS) for trading activities in the forex market effective December 2nd, 2024, the CBN said: “Banks are strongly advised to liaise with Bloomberg representatives to expedite the onboarding process and address any technical or operational concerns promptly.
“The CBN will deploy its regulatory power to enhance the implementation of this directive and reserves the right to impose sanctions when necessary.”
For the first time since May 2024 the Naira recorded five consecutive days of appreciation across all segments of the foreign exchange market last week. It closed at N1,535 and N1,555 to one USdollar in the official (otherwise known as the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, NFEM) and parallel market (otherwise known as black market) respectively at the weekend.
Impact of new e-Forex system Providing insight on the impact of the new forex system, a bank executive who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity said: “The system seems to be quite good. It seems to be achieving its goal as you get a feel of where the market is, real time.
“People are putting up orders on the system, matching trades and helping with market colour. It looks and seems to be good and the Naira has appreciated since its launch. CBN also intervened using the system.
“Time will tell if the market appreciation can be sustained. But there will definitely be some equilibrium down the line.”
Following this development, the margin between the parallel market and NAFEM rate narrowed to N20 per dollar from N118 per dollar as at close of trading last weekend.
Data from the Daily Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) published by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, showed that Naira has gained It also represents N168 or 9.8 per cent appreciation from N1,720 per dollar previous week’s closing rate, the largest weekly gain since this year.
Naira appreciates to N1,550/$ in parallel market
Data from FMDQ showed that the naira suffered sustained depreciation this year in the official market moving from N907.11 per dollar in January 2024 to N1,520.4 per dollar by May; N1,603.8 per dollar in July and N1,730 per dollar in October. The trend reversed to N1,600 threshold in the same month through November.
The rate of depreciation was worse in the parallel market where it hit as low as N1,775/$1 at end of November, 2024.
Black market operators give insight
Black market traders noted that the continuous daily appreciation of naira in the parallel market was due to availability of dollars which has even made individuals struggle to sell.
One of the operators, Mr. Yakubu Giwa said: “Today (last Saturday) the Naira stood at N1,500 per dollar. We black market traders are struggling to sell what we bought.
“The current appreciation of the Naira is as a result of activities such as people in the diaspora returning home, and those in the country are spending their money on food items and other preparations for the festive season. This is so every year during this period.
“Those in the diaspora are also sending money to their families and relatives in Nigeria resulting in more inflows.
“Individuals with dollars are bringing it out seeing the intense appreciation going on now but many are unable to sell it because those in the business are still struggling to sell theirs.
“The market dealers are also afraid of bearing losses because the naira might appreciate to N1,300 or N1,200 per dollar before next weekend. So they are cautiously buying dollars.”
Apart from the dollar, the exchange rate of other foreign currencies and prices of commodities like gold are also going down.
Mr. Umoru Yahaya, another black market trader and gold seller, said: “Apart from the appreciation of the naira against the dollar, it is also appreciating against the pound sterling, euro, and other foreign currencies.
“Yesterday I traded sterling at around N2,200, today (last Saturday) it is around N1,700.
“Look at the value of gold that was N150,000 per gram two weeks ago. It has also dropped to N120,000 and going to N115,000 per gram as of today.
“The price of silver per gram now is N20,000 per gram, we sold for N50,000 per gram two weeks ago.
“Those harbouring dollars in their houses are unable to sell it because of the appreciation pressure that has made many of us very cautious of the quantity of dollars we buy so as not to be on the losing side.
The Nigerian CBN Governor ('Yemi Cardoso) gave hints and warnings before EFEMS was introduced and it's ONLY discerning and savvy folks that took actions based off of the FACT that similar FX trading systems exist in advanced financial markets in the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Germany, India, etc, to remove inefficiencies (and speculative manipulations from black marketers) in FX flows. This transparent and successful system used in other climes is what the Nigerian Central Bank keyed into as well for the FIRST time ever in Nigerian financial markets history!
The newly introduced Electronic Foreign Exchange Matching System [EFEMS], which commenced real-time, live trades in the FX markets based off of the Bloomberg BMatch platform on Monday last week (December 2, 2024) is novel and will cause a major tectonic shift leading right into 2025 and beyond while providing real-time transparency on trading terminals and gradually place illegal black market speculators right behind the curtain where they belong.
All the usual West African Sahelian illegal black marketers interviewed in this newspaper article have absolutely NO idea about what has hit them and what is going on with the new BloombergBMatch-linked EFEMS. They are ONLY aware about the usual FX inflows from Diasporans to their Continental Africa relatives which is of course correct. But this situation of "sustained Naira appreciation" is new to these black marketers and other currency speculators around this holiday/year ending period. This some sarcastic comments exist on this thread. But note, EFEMS is like NO other that has ever been seen.
There will definitely be an equilibrium, but EFEMS has emerged to stabilize the multiple exchange rates into one transparent window. 2025 will certainly be a great year for FX stability so that mulnational businesses and investors with ties to Nigeria will NOT continue to suffer from severe exchange rate loses. Equinor (EQNR.OL) has finalised the sale of its assets in Nigeria and Azerbaijan for a total of up to $2 billion, marking the conclusion of its 30-year operations in both countries.
The Norwegian oil and gas company announced the completion of the divestments on Monday, a move first disclosed in 2023, Reuter reports.
The divestments, which were finalised in recent weeks, are expected to enhance Equinor’s cash flow in the fourth quarter. They align with the company's strategy to optimise its international portfolio.
"The exits enable investments to deepen further in countries where Equinor can add the most value and build a more focused and robust international portfolio," the company stated, though it did not provide further details.
Equinor aims to increase its international output by 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boed) by 2030, focusing on new fields in Brazil, the UK, and the US.
In Nigeria, Equinor sold a 20.21% stake in the Agbami oil field, operated by Chevron (CVX.N), to Chappal Energies for up to $1.2 billion, consisting of $710 million in cash and the rest in contingent payments.
The company did not specify how market prices or other factors might influence those contingent payments.
In Azerbaijan, the company sold its 7.27% stake in the Azeri Chirag Gunashli (ACG) field, an 8.71% stake in the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline, and a 50% stake in the Karabagh project to Azerbaijan’s SOCAR and India’s ONGC for $745 million.
Agbami oil field is the Ikorodu, Lagos State indigene, and business magnate, Mrs. Folorunso Alakija's oil field located in the deep offshore. Equinor is one of her company, Famfa Oil's partners who she brought in 30 years ago and Equinor just simply sold their percentage stake to another foreign company to take over and continue from where they stopped. Equinor simply wants to streamline their international operations and become more liquid with cash for other uses. That's how companies cut cost of operations.
Mrs. Alakija remains a collossus among female business magnates who leveraged on her wealthy background as a member of the large Ogbara family of Ikorodu and on her banking experience as a corporate secretary with IMB on Victoria Island back in the 1980s (before she retired to found the iconic Supreme Stitches in Ikeja) and then made a bold move with some of her family members input to bid for the VERY risky deep offshore exploration with Agbami finally striking crude oil with her foreign technical partners in the early 1990s. DiamondsAreFore: Tributes have been paid to an Elizabeth railway line worker who died after an attack at a railway station in east London.
Jorge Ortega, 61, died in hospital after suffering head injuries following the assault at Ilford station.
Officers from the British Transport Police (BTP) were called to the station just before 8.50pm on Wednesday after reports of a serious assault.
In a tribute released through BTP on Saturday, Ortega’s son said: “Our dad was the most loving person, the kindest soul you could have the pleasure of meeting.
Everyone who has met our dad or who has ever worked with him over the years will tell you this. He had a brilliant mind, enjoyed cooking, loved drawing, and was highly skilled in art.
“He was an amazing family man and would always put other people first. He loved his grandchildren, and in turn, they adored our dad.
“He was totally devoted to our mum and loved her beyond what words can describe.
“Having been together for over 38 years, he is an example of what a great man should be like and a role model that we highly look up to.
“We can only hope to be like him. Dad is and will always be in our hearts.”
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a post on social media the incident was “absolutely tragic”. The prime minister added: “Nobody should have to face any violence at work – and certainly not something as shocking as this.”

Ayodele Jamgbadi, of Ilford, appeared at Highbury Corner magistrates court on Friday charged with grievous bodily harm, affray and possession of a prohibited offensive weapon in a private place. He was remanded to appear at Inner London crown court on 7 January 2025.
The alleged perpetrator of the crime is a 28-year-old British-Nigerian (born in May 1996 in London) who's full names are Justin Ayodele Jamgbadi. He attended the University of East London and is a music producer. There's a photographs of his Uni graduation online.

Ibeju Lekki was one of the rural local governments of Lagos when I was growing up. Government interventions in the area were usually about establishing farm settlements and improving the lives of rural dwellers. However, things have started changing in the area.
Ibeju Lekki Local Government should not be confused with the Lekki Phase 1 to Ajah areas, which are in Eti-Osa Local Government.
Lekki, in Eti-Osa, witnessed rapid growth and development in the 1990s and 2000s with the establishment of Lekki Phase 1, Victoria Garden City and other estates. The oil companies, Chevron, Elf and Mobil, also established structures in the area.
This led to congestion on the Lekki-Epe Expressway. I remember that the expressway had absolutely no traffic jams up till the mid-1990s, but it later became synonymous with traffic jams.
Development has now spread from Lekki in Eti-Osa to Ibeju Lekki Local Government. The local government is being transformed from a rural local government to a heavily industrialised one. Ibeju Lekki Local Government currently hosts and will host the folllowing facilities:
1) The Lekki Deep Sea Port: This is currently the deepest and biggest port in Nigeria.
2) The Lekki Free Trade Zone: This free trade zone is home to many industrial concerns including a Kellogg's cereals plant, a Sinotruck heavy truck assembly plant, Golden Dream Diapers plant, etc.
3) Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Company: This refinery is also at the Lekki Free Trade Zone.
4) Alaro City: This new city, which is being built to rival Lekki Phase 1, Victoria Garden City, Banana Island and Eko Atlantic City is also in Ibeju Lekki Local Government.
5) The proposed Lekki Airport is also at Ibeju Lekki Local Government.
6) Dangote Port: Due to the fact that the Apapa Port could not handle some of the equipment that he needed for his refinery, Dangote built another port in the Ibeju Lekki area and it was deep enough and had the equipment to enable him import what he needed for his refinery.
With all these developments springing up in the local government area, people fear that the kind of congestion that we see in Apapa and even in neighbouring Eti-Osa (Lekki Phase 1 to Abraham Adesanya area) will be witnessed in Ibeju Lekki and some also fear that the traffic jams will spread from Ibeju Lekki to Eti-Osa.
However, there have been plans to prevent this from happening. Some of the facilities that are going to help to prevent this from happening have already been built, some are currently being built, while others have yet to be built.

Indeed, a LOT of the younger ones born in the late 1980s till after the 2000s DON'T realize that Lekki town (which has been in existence for over 500 years) in Ibeju-Lekki LGA is the REAL Lekki and NOT Lekki Phase 1 which is a more recent development in Eti-Osa LGA like you accurately stated here. (Lekki Phase 1 evolved from parts of the Maroko settlement slum which Brigadier-General Raji Rasaki, the military administrator of Lagos State completely demolished in 1989 to pave way for Victoria Island Extension and adjoining areas). The ENTIRE Lekki Peninsula was named after the indigenous Ijebu town of Lekki in Ibeju-Lekki LGA of Lagos State.I find it a bit disturbing that several people who are new to Lagos history WRONGLY refer to Lekki Phase 1, Ajah, and other areas on Lekki Peninsula as "Island" [I often hear them say, "I'm on the Island OR I dey for Island"] BUT the CORRECT name of that entire landmass is "Lekki Peninsula" because it's NOT an Island that is completely surrounded by water like Ikoyi Island, Victoria Island, Lagos Island, etc. I've had to correct some of them here on NL about the distinction between an Island and a Peninsula (which refers to a landmass that is NOT completely surrounded by water).

These two parent variants are closely related, having both evolved from JN.1, which was the dominant variant around the world at the start of 2024.
Researchers detect XEC cases through the Gisaid public database, where viral genetic sequences are submitted for examination. This platform enables the identification of mutations in SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19.
Currently, the US has reported 118 XEC cases, the highest globally. Germany has 92 XEC cases, the UK has 82, Canada has 77, and Denmark has 61 cases according to media reports but actual figures are likely to be higher in nations that do not regularly sequence COVID samples.

In Europe and North America, the dominant variant is KP.3.1.1, while Asia is primarily affected by the closely related KP.3.3 variant.
XEC has not been reported from any African country, but experts suggest that the strain is likely to become the dominant variant globally in the next few months.
Compared to other strains, XEC is said to have a higher growth advantage, spreading much more rapidly than the others.
Experts said XEC has this advantage because of its relatively rare T22N mutation (inherited from KS.1.1) combined with Q493E (from KP.3.3) in the spike protein.
The spike protein is said to play a crucial role in helping the virus attach to human cells, allowing it to enter and begin replication.
However, the impact of the T22N mutation on the virus’ ability to replicate or spread among individuals remains largely unclear.
The first strain of COVID-19 and the first known case of the virus emerged in December 2019, with initial cases reported in the city of Wuhan, Hubei province, China.
The virus, later identified as SARS-CoV-2, rapidly spread worldwide, leading to the pandemic declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020. In Nigeria alone, at least 267,000 COVID-19 cases were recorded with a case fatality rate of 1.2 per cent.
How XEC spreads
Since the initial outbreak of COVID-19, several new strains, or variants, of the SARS-CoV-2 virus have emerged due to mutations.
These variants reflect the ongoing evolution of SARS-CoV-2, with some causing more severe waves of infection than others, often influenced by their ability to spread and evade immunity.
The newest coronavirus variant, XEC, spreads mainly via respiratory droplets released into the air when an infected individual breathes, talks, coughs, or sneezes. Though the virus can persist on surfaces, surface transmission is said to be less frequent compared to airborne spread.
As a result, health authorities recommend maintaining social distancing, wearing masks in public settings, and regularly using hand sanitiser to minimise the risk of infection.

"These people are living in hell," he told NBC's Meet the Press in his first broadcast network interview since winning November's election.

Falana has built his reputation over 40years, his kids are also building theirs, surely they will not let someone cast doubt on that image without seeking redress.
