Believeintruth: You forgot to mention Rear Admiral Alison Madueke who was fired by Abacha as Chief of Nawal staff when he said in the SMC that they should release MKO Abiola.
I have NO recollections of this version of his sacking because of his support for MKO Abiola and I'm just hearing this new version for the FIRST time ever.
What I remember full well is that it was widely reported in a section of the media that Rear Admiral Alison Madueke and Major-General Chris Ali were abruptly sacked or retired because of their involvement in illegal arms shipments which has now turned out to be false based on the final 2019 self-revelation of what happened. Kudos to Alison Madueke if he really did that because the Abacha military dictatorship from 1993 to 1997 was very ruthless and usually framed up and assasinated via bomb blasts or gun attacks [through the Al-Mustapha-led Strike Force which had Sergeant Barnabas Jabila Mshelia (aka Sergeant Rogers), Omenka, and others as members] those innocent military men and civilians they suspected of having sympathies for democratic forces or having radical opinions back in the 1990s.
I had to do a quick fact-check and got the evidence here from 2019 in Rear Admiral Alison Madueke's words below as published in the Sun and Vanguard newspapers.
“So, it is good to tell your story. The incident that led to our retirement; my fellow victim (Major-General Chris Alli, former Chief of Army Staff) is here. What was it? It is in this book.”
Military dictatorships are the WORSE things that can ever happen to any country because they NOT only engage in relentless corruption but also undermine the military establishment by eliminating some of their colleagues to prevent coup d'etats and underfund certain branches of the military such as the Air force to minimized attacks on their dictatorships with air power. General Ibrahim Babangida did that very well by underfunding the Air force and Police while amassing millions of USD for themselves and close military and civilian buddies of theirs.
Man102: President Bola Tinubu addressed Nigerians this morning on the occasion of Democracy Day, which is also the 25th anniversary of unbroken democracy in Nigeria.
The presidency has released the full text of the president’s speech. Please read below:
Bubu4Sea: 👍🏽 I love igbos they are not tribalist, they put their jobs on the line to fight for a yoruba man
Point of correction here.
As someone who was alive then, I can tell you for free that those two Ibo men you highlighted were already retired from the Nigerian Navy, so they did NOT put their Naval jobs or careers on the line when they joined the Pro-democracy movement to restore the annulled June 12, 1993 elections.
Ebitu Ukiwe himself had been a victim of Ibrahim Babangida's sacking from the Navy in the 1980s as his second in command in terms of seniority in government. Ndubuisi Kanu was the Military Administrator of Lagos State for only 1 year from 1977 to 1978 so, he was already retired from the Navy when he joined in the Pro-democracy struggle.
Gosh! He really tripped. The agbada definitely caused that in addition to the fact that his reflexes were a bit slow in terms of looking at his footsteps. I've also had a couple of these missteps in the decades past and it can happen to anybody while in a slippery bathroom or while climbing or descending the staircases or while getting out of a vehicle.
Hope he gets back on track with partaking in the special democracy events of today and the general governance for the good of all. That's how to be a man when you run into headwinds and major turning points in life.
Etesam: U needn't have quoted OP since u r only replying to the thread!
I had my primary reasons for quoting the OP in addition to replying. The primary reason was simply to save the original important message the OP posted here as a quote just in case he deactivates his NL account down the road like some folks have done in the recent past. I've originally been a member of NL for 19 years now since 2005 and I know full well how a bit tough it can get with trying to find posts and threads made by NL members who have deactivated their NL accounts. That would make the thread post easier to find via the search function. Nothing wrong with that.

This is so surreal. I had that hunch that he and those on board the Malawi Air Force plane wouldn't make it. My condolences go out to his family and the entire people of Malawi being that I also have links with that country as well.
The Dornier 228 has always been a versatile aircraft in use by the Nigerian Air Force as well since as far back as I can remember, the early 1980s. Constant checks have to be done on all the aircraft to avoid these kinds of incidents.
raskymonojendor: You cannot revise history. Gowon only finished what Ironsi started.
Decree Number 34 of May 24, 1966, promulgated by Ironsi caused massive unrest in the Northern part of the country as the Northerners had gone against delimiting of regional powers as far back as 1959. The decree made the centre strong, thereby abolishing the powers granted to the regions. In June 1966, Ironsi began a tour of the country (never to return to Lagos) and met with the Northern elite, assuring them of a united Nigeria. thehistoryville.com/
But, Ironsi was in a hurry to make an impression. In his May broadcast, he declared: “Nigeria shall on the 24th May, 1966 cease to be a federation and shall accordingly as from that day be a republic by the name of the Republic of Nigeria, consisting of the whole territory, which immediately before that day was comprised in a federation.” As federalism was abolished, the regions ceased to exist. From their ashes sprang up a group of territorial areas called provinces. Each region became a group of provinces, with a National Military Government at the centre. The late Head of State had also proposed a new economic plan, but it never saw the light of day.
According to Ndayo Uko, the Decree no.2 was to serve "as a kind gesture to the press" to safeguard himself when he went on later to promulgate the Defamatory and Offensive Decree No.44 of 1966 which made it an "offense to display or pass on pictorial representation, sing songs, or play instruments the words of which are likely to provoke any section of the country." He also as per the proposals of a single man committee passed the controversial Unification Decree No. 34 aimed to unify Nigeria into a unitary state.
Decrees No. 34 and 44 of 1966.
The REASONS Decree 44 of 1966 (which dealt with the spread of highly defamatory written and verbal contents by ethnic bigots in 1966 is right in the screenshot below as stated also by Nnamdi Azikiwe in his pamphlet "The Origins of the 'Nigerian' Civil War."

EcoBrick: Following enquiries, the House disowned the bill as the duo of the House spokesman, Akin Rotimi and the Chairman, Rules and Business, Francis Waive said the proposed legislationl was not before committee for deliberation.
However, the drafter of the private bill, Dr Akin Fapohunda, who had earlier hinted our correspondent of his intent to interface with members of the National Assembly ahead of the transmission of the bill to the parliament, on Friday, said he had chosen to send the proposed law to President Tinubu, who may in turn present same to the parliament as executive bill.
Adamux: How come Alhaji Atiku and Tinubu didn't get substantial votes in South East?
Whenever you are people are looking for bigots and tribalists, just gather yourselves at the village square, erect a giant mirror and look at it closely. Therein lies the answer.
obedience4: India says two of its nationals who had been recruited by the Russian army have been killed in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The Indian foreign ministry said it had urged the Russian authorities to repatriate the bodies of the two deceased. The ministry has also urged Moscow to quickly release and return all Indian nationals who are with the Russian army. Moscow is yet to comment.
Dozens of Indians have reportedly been duped by agents into fighting for Russian forces with the lure of money and a Russian passport. The BBC has spoken to some of them.
Some said they were coerced into taking up combat roles in the Russian army. Others have also enlisted of their own accord. "We regret to state that two Indian nationals who had been recruited by the Russian Army have recently been killed in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine," the foreign ministry statement said, without naming the victims.
The ministry also urged Indian nationals to "exercise caution while seeking employment opportunities in Russia". In May Indian police arrested four people allegedly linked to a network of human traffickers on suspicion of luring young men to Russia with the promise of jobs or education, only to force them to fight in Ukraine.
At least two other Indians died earlier this year while fighting for Russian forces. Despite urging Russia to return Indian nationals serving in the Russian army, India has refused to condemn the Kremlin over its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, urging the two sides to seek peace through dialogue and diplomacy.
Meanwhile Nepal and Sri Lanka have warned their citizens not to be lured in by the false promises of human traffickers in recent months, after it emerged that hundreds of their nationals were taking part in the war as mercenaries.
Kathmandu says at least 20 Nepalese have died fighting for Russia. At least 16 former Sri Lankan soldiers have been killed in the conflict so far, most of them for the Russian army.
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry raised the issue with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Monday, the ministry said. It was agreed that "no further recruitment from Sri Lanka will be done", the ministry said https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cv225e8dpdgo
It's not worth the trouble taking part in another man's war.
professorPABX: This is not news. My late grandfather iswho was a prominent member of NCNC told us that Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe always reiterated that Onitsha people are from IFE, settling at Benin. When their progenitor died, they stayed for a very long time at Benin before migrating to several places and finally settled at Onitsha.
The Ga people of Accra Ghana are also from IFE. Ekuabo, Ekwuabo , Ekaabo means welcome in Yoruba in various Yoruba pronunciations.
When the late Oba of Benin wrote a book and gave a new history about Benin and IFE relationship and said Oodua is Ekalalederhan a Benin Prince. He said Oodua is not the first person to settle at IFE. He said Oodua met some people who were already living at IFE . The puzzle he left was for historians to find out those early settlers at IFE before Oodua arrived.
His Highness, Oba Akinrutan ( OBAT), the Olugbo of UGBO land in Ondo State claimed those early settlers are UGBO people referring to his people.
My question to His Highness, Oba Akinrutan is to find out if there is any relationship between UGBO people and the present Onitsha people.
Ugbo isn't the same as the Ibo people. Ugbo simply refers to the Ilaje folks of Ugbo kingdom now in Ondo State... A part of the original Ife (Ufe) aborigenes when Oduduwa arrived from Oke Oranfe, just 8 miles away from the present Ife. The Olugbo of Ugbo's royal palace had already issued a public clarification and warning to the irresponsible group of people among the Ibos who were spreading falsehoods that Ibos are the same as Ugbos to STOP IT. The quarters of the Olugbo of Ugbo's lineage still exists in Ife as of today and it's an open secret.
The Ooni of Ife also NEVER at anytime said Ibos are the same as Ugbos. It's the senseless and highly dishonest fake news spreaders among the Ibos who are responsible for that fake news online and offline... even on this same NL thread, a few of these creeps are still spreading that insidious falsehood.
No doubt, Usen town which is now in Ovia South West LGA of Edo State (which was founded by Oranmiyan's older brother) was the final destination point for Yorubas coming from Ife before getting to Benin many centuries back.
It was from Usen that Oranmiyan went to Benin to become the first Oba after the Ogiso rulership ended. It is very possible that the Yoruba paternal lineages that had become a part of Igodomigo (which became Benin), then migrated out from Benin to different parts of Anioma and then the Igalas who are the boat people then took the migrants across the River Niger in boats according to the current Obi of Onitsha Ado N'Idu to the present Onitsha 500 years ago, which as we know was first settled by the Igalas. Hence Onitsha has Igala and Bini bloodlines or quarters out of the 8 quarters in Onitsha. The Igalas are the custodians of the Egungun masquerade (spelled as Egwugwu in Igala). As you might have known already, Igala is a Yoruboid language with Igalas having many Yoruba words like Ogede, Omi, Egwugwu, Ogun (Ogwu), and more, due to the FACT that Yoruba bloodlines are mixed with the migrant population that came from Wukari in modern Taraba State via the River Benue and converged at the River Niger confluence according to the interview granted to the Sunday Punch by the last Attah of Igala Michael Ameh Oboni in 2018. Igalas also had significant Edo mix in them and the Igalas also had influences on the Idoma and Norther parts of Anambra and Enugu (such as in Nsukka) where they first introduced the red chieftaincy cap from Igalaland.
Rounding off... All the traditional titles and Yoruba deities you find in Ife are also domiciled in Usen and Benin. If a new Oba of Benin is to be crowned, Usen plays a strong role in the coronation ceremonies of that Oba of Benin. That's how close Ile Ife is to Usen and Benin's Royal Palace.
The Lagos Redline Metro is a game-changer for mass movement in Lagos, Nigeria. The 37km rail line connects Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo in Lagos, with notable stops at Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, Yaba, and Oyingbo
President Bola Tinubu inaugurated the Red Line Rail Project on February 29, 2024. The Red Line will share the right-of-way with the Lagos-Kano Standard Gauge Railway The Red Line is envisioned as a vital metro link within the Lagos-Ibadan rail corridor
The Red Line is expected to carry over 500,000 passengers daily, reducing commute times and improving air quality by decreasing traffic congestion The project also includes the construction of 10 vehicular overpasses and pedestrian bridges to ensure the safe separation of train traffic from car and pedestrian movement
5) Many financial apps to solve different problems
6) More African food spices and ingredients
7) More popular eg in Entertainment etc
8 ) That Nigerian people's feeling and being with people of familiar backgrounds
But u can be in Cameroon and still gain from Nigeria especially when u have linked NINS, BVNs, Sim cards, web links, bank apps, in touch with your bankers and stock brokers via email etc
However:
1) Electric meters are VERY expensive.... Why discriminate with band levels, does it mean only rich people live in areas with such bands?
2) Food is expensive ( food is cheaper in Benin Republic if u buy in bags eg 1/4, 1/2, full bags.... Cameroon even cheaper with my beloved glass cup( lol)
3) Insecurity
Note that in Cameroon their National ID card is IMPORTANT to them due to security measures, the equivalent is RP. So, your National ID Card too is important.
U can send and receive easily Western Union and the offices are in several places with NIN Card, RP, International passport.
Food for thought:
They 'envy' us that we have choice of democracy to choose our leaders but my people pray and fast tooooo much but won't do the right thing including voting rightly and later begin to gnash their teeth even more than those who we look at as not having the choice to choose their leaders(lol).
They feel bobo is too old, but SEBI his brains and legs to move to office aren't tired yet @91yrs?(Lol) Besides, he is performing better than what we have. I hope ( like us) they won't be expecting a political messiah only to be deceived with fake chg.....
Cos he be like say when person too dey enjoy, e go dey find how to taste suffer small
Addendum: One can fly into Yola( Adamawa) since we don't know how safe the road is and drive into Garaou( we need Northerners to confirm this road for us if safe too ie 6hrs+ journey).....
Anything inside Cameroon eg Garaou is SAFE, night buses too within Cameroon SAFE.
Recently, buses now move from Garaou to Ngaoundere, 6hrs+ journey for 5,000frs and Train from Ngaoundere to Yaounde which is 13hrs+ journey is now 10,000frs instead of 25,000frs..... Which magic are they performing please ( lol)?
It seems like the brutal war between the English-speaking Cameroon (who are fighting for independence) and French-speaking Cameroon has subsided based on what you wrote here in terms of relative peace.
When u think u aren't enjoying enough only to see weepable conditions in Nigeria
We have agreed there aren't enough jobs in Africa, but at least give constant, non negotiable almost 24hrs light, so we can at least generate our own incomes and pay PHCN from it, give affordable food, affordable transportation, imagine Bamenda to Limbe which is like Lagos to Onitsha or almost Owerri being 6000-7000frs.
U see massive food sacks, buckets of Irish potatoes in Cameroon, yellow Garri, carrots, green peas, easily buyable bunches of plantains, rice, beans, cabbages, sweet yam( not sweet as such and looks like sweet potatoes), sweet potatoes, palm oil, groundnut oil( which they prefer), garden eggs( red specie is common), mushrooms, bread.
At Sens Interdit, u easily buy sim cards( MTN, ORANGE, CAMTEL, NEXTTEL), clothes/ gloves/ socks/ head warmers, dry fish, excess pepper. If u're slim, get ready to be fatter or at least fresher.
Good, affordable RETIREMENT haven... Infact, if u plan to just build one mighty house in Nigeria, u may consider, using part of the money to buy even if it's half plot of land in Cameroon and building even if it's a small bungalow.
It was in Cameroon my Power banks stopped working because I forgot to charge them.
Note that u don't gain less when in their Francophone areas compared to Anglophone areas as it's bilingual and LESS FRENCH than Ivory Coast.
Though, traveling abroad is cheaper via ECOWAS countries than through Cameroon.... And traveling through Douala is cheaper compared to Yaounde airport.
In Cameroon there is less fear of robbers, kidnappers, bandits, no constant light can be very depressing ( how do Nigerians cope?.... Not easy being a Nigerian at all), more hope of long life as they live longer Between Benin Republic and Cameroon, Benin Republic has more organized democracy( one of the best in Africa), organized generally, neater however, when u need more value for money and life, Cameroon is it, also getting kpali in Cameroon is less complicated unlike Benin Republic.
FREELANCER HAVEN:
Cameroon is a Freelancer's secret haven without spending so much and u can live there even without kpali till u have the money to do one eg Student kpali..... If u travel through land borders in and out of Cameroon, just tip them.... But if by Air/ airport, it may show u have overstayed.
Ikom- Ekok border through Bamenda is more accessible now and Peace Mass Transit bus can take u from any state they operate to Ikom-( pmtdotng).
Make sure u hold: International passport( useful later for kpali), Yellow Fever Card, and Ego.... When u have MTN and Orange sims mobile money, u can later move in and out of Cameroon with lesser cash.
Eriokanmi: A large percentage of Akoko Edo LGA towns speak yoruba. Some have their dialects in addition while some others speak only yoruba. They're not part of the Oranmiyan brouhaha. They migrated from aloko and other parts of ondo state to settle in that place many centuries ago. Some towns that are supposed to be part of ondo were merged with edo due to state creation and boundary formation.
For instance, my town fell on the edo side cos of the river Osę, which was the boundary landmark between ondo and edo states. Otherwise, it would have been inside ondo state and once you cross that river, you're in edo state and vice versa. We have such in all states.
Ikpoba what people speak yoruba like locals. They moderated from ondo state as well. They're not inside Akoko edo. They're very close to Benin. The Ebiras founded a town called igarra which is the HQ of Akoko Edo LGA. It's also called Etuno.
@Eriokanmi,
That's awesome! Thanks for the deep insights here. Indeed, the dude that vehemently said that no Yoruba communties exist in Akoko Edo is from the Igarra axis and alluded to his Ebira (Etuno) connection, but some other folks took him on and started listing names of some Yoruba towns for him with YouTube videos of Yoruba folks speaking dialects from those Edo communties around the Ose River which you spoke about. The uploaded videos are still here on NL.
I remember a guy from Usen in Ovia South West LGA of Edo State posted here on NL during the COVID-19 lockdowns that his people wanted a boundary adjustment to move to Ondo State but the Oba of Benin had been blocking the move. They greet one another there in Usen with the salutation "Delauhe," meaning "How is Ife (Uhe)" emphasizing their Ile-Ife origins going back to the era of Oranmiyan's older brother. Infact Usen High Chiefs play a strong role during the coronation ceremony of every Oba of Benin. In Benin, the YouTube video interview that I watched indicated that the Benin royal family descendants greet one another with the salutation "L'mogun" which is a reference to the Yoruba deity Ogun, the God of war and iron.
Mariangeles: My mum said they usually come out during corn season. What do you call them in your language/dialect?
Can you eat them? I heard they're very nutritious.

An interesting thread. It shows the different names that folks in Nigeria call this delicacy.
Surprisingly, after doing a quick scan of the feedbacks from pages 1 to 6, I noticed that the Yoruba folks have up to five names for this winged insect delicacy depending on regional Yoruba dialects, but Esunsun is the most prevalent name. Hausas call it Shinge, Ibos call it Aku with other suffix variants added to Aku, Ebiras call it Ivo, Bini-Edos call it Edon, Esan-Edos call it Irikhun, Tivs call it Hur, Akwa Ibom and Cross Rivers folks call it Ndube.
hopexter: Because the university is in Igbo land doesn’t mean it’s only Igbos that attend the university. Everything doesn’t have to be igbos bros. There are deltans, Bayelsans, Benins and other tribes in that great school just as there are igbos in other universities all over the country.
True that.
I was about to write that here when I saw your post. Back then from the 1960s right through to the 1980s, a significant number of young students were adventurous and dying to school in Unis far away from their home states.
Pastor Enoch Adeboye was a student of Mathematics at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka when the unfortunate Nigerian Civil War of 1967 was about to start and so he and other non-Eastern students and citizens of other ethnicities were told to leave the East by the secessionist or rebel leadership.
After the war in the 1970s, folks of other ethnicities returned to UNN because it's a Federal institution with top level teaching. So, most Unis had students from all parts of Nigeria just like all the elite Federal Government Colleges spread around Nigeria.
Even foreign students were part of the Nigerian Uni population from Ghana, India, Bangladesh, Jamaica, a few White folks from America or the UK that I know of as well who were children of expatriates living and working in Nigeria or taught as academics in the Unis back in the oil boom era of the 1970s right to the early 1980s.
LocalFARMERS: You obviously didn't pay attention to the pictures. There difference is too obvious. It is like day and night. Ugwu leaf is smaller. The other pumpkin leaf is very big. Even their mode of preparing Soup is different. .Ugwu leaf can be used to prepare Egusi Soup, Groundnut Soup and vegetables. While the other pumpkin is only used to Cook Groundnut Soup (I stand to be corrected) I have tasted both Ugwu leaf and the other leaf Soup.
The standard English name is Fluted Pumpkin. The Yoruba name for fluted pumpkin is Ewe Woroko and the Ibo name is Ugu.
dre11: Insiders said sixteen directors were relieved of their duties following the implementation of the CBN special investigator’s report, which accused a number of the bank’s staff of conniving with Mr Emefiele to allegedly loot the bank.
LocalFARMERS: Due to the high cost of fresh and processed Tomatoes, most Restaurant operators, Mama put owners and most households now device a cheaper means to make Stew. Since we can not do without eating Stew.
They now use dry Pumpkin with dry fresh Tomatoes. It is usually in 60:40 ratio. That is, 60% is dry Pumpkin while 40% is dry Tomatoes. The Pumpkin is to increase the quantity of the Stew, while it maintain the original Tomatoes flavour, aroma, taste and color.
Pumpkin is a highly nutritional food. It is used to prepare varieties of meals.

Almiron: Havana, Cuba CNN— A group of Russian naval ships, including a nuclear-powered submarine, will visit Cuba next week as part of “historically friendly relations,” Cuba’s government said Thursday
The Russian “frigate Gorshkov, the nuclear-powered submarine Kazan, the fleet oil tanker Pashin, and the rescue tug Nikolai Chiker” will visit the port of Havana between June 12 and 17, according to the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces in a statement published by the Foreign Ministry.
Cuba says none of the ships carry nuclear weapons and insists their stopover does not represent a threat to the region.
“Visits by naval units from other countries are a historical practice of the revolutionary government with nations that maintain relations of friendship and collaboration,” the statement added.
Last July, the Russian Navy’s training class ship Perekop sailed into Havana for a four-day visit.
The latest visit appears to be the largest of its kind in years.
Cuba is increasingly reliant on Russian oil and aid as the communist-run country weathers its worst economic crisis in decades.
Cuba’s announcement comes days after US President Joe Biden gave Ukraine permission to carry out limited strikes inside Russian territory with American munitions. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Western countries “supplying weapons to a conflict zone is always a bad thing.”
“Visits by naval units from other countries are a historical practice of the revolutionary government with nations that maintain relations of friendship and collaboration,” the statement added.
Moscow has not confirmed the information provided by Cuba. CNN has reached out to the Russian government for comment.
It’s not the first time Russian Navy ships have been sent to Cuba, a key ally to the former Soviet Union during the Cold War that briefly hosted nuclear missiles at Moscow’s behest during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Western countries “supplying weapons to a conflict zone is always a bad thing.”
“In the end, if we see that these countries become involved in a war against us, what they are doing makes them directly involved in a war against the Russian Federation, we reserve the right to act the same way,” Putin said on Wednesday.
Putin added that as a response, “we will improve our air defense systems to destroy the missiles.” He also asked why Russia would “not have the right to supply our weapons of the same class to those regions of the world where there will be strikes on the sensitive facilities of those countries that are doing this against Russia?”
‘No direct threat’
Russia’s military is expected to increase its naval and air activity near the United States this summer as part of routine maneuvers in the lead up to a global naval exercise in the fall, according to the US State Department and the Pentagon.
Alongside Russian ships this summer will also be one of the Russian Navy’s Severodvinsk II-class submarines, Dietz said. The port call for that submarine was approved “at least in part due to Havana’s displeasure” over the visit of a US nuclear submarine to the US’ Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba last year, he said.
Cuba has hosted Russian ships every year between 2013 and 2020, Dietz said, adding that the exercises “impose a significant cost on the Russian Navy, which faces challenges in maintaining readiness and conducting deployments with an aging fleet.
Given Russia’s long history of Cuban port calls, these are considered routine naval visits, especially in the context of increased US support to Ukraine and NATO exercises,” Dietz said.

Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! •Economic Integration, Security, Food Production Top Priority At Meeting
Regional economic integration, food production and regional security are the main items that top the agenda at the meeting of the South-West Governors’ Forum held in Lagos on Monday.
At the meeting held behind closed doors in Alausa, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the host, was unanimously elected to lead the Forum as chairman.
Sanwo-Olu stepped into the position, following the vacancy occasioned by the death of the former Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, who chaired the regional caucus.
Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti) and Sanwo-Olu (Lagos) were all physically present at the meeting, which lasted for four hours. They all paid their last respects to the memory of the late Akeredolu, who passed away last December.
The Forum reviewed security across the region, pointing out that South-West had been relatively peaceful in the Southern part of the country. They, however, used to platform to renew their call for creation of State Police to further strengthen safety in the region.
They agreed on the need to forge a security cooperation in order to enhance economic development and free movement within the region.
The Governors also called for more collaboration between security agencies and Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun Corps.
The Forum commended the House of Representatives and members of the Southwest caucus in the National Assembly for their efforts at passing the South-West Development Commission Bill, urging the upper chamber of the federal parliament to speed up the bill passage.
To expand food production and agricultural development, the Forum also directed their respective States’ Commissioners for Agriculture to immediately come together and develop a comprehensive agricultural template that would leverage on each State’s comparative advantage.
Rising from the meeting, the Forum, through its chairman, Governor Sanwo-Olu, read the 11-point resolution adopted in the communique signed by all the six Governors.
Sanwo-Olu said: The Southwest Governors’ Forum, at its meeting today, June 10, 2024, deliberated extensively on contemporary issues in the South-West States and resolved to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR on the groundbreaking of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, and the proposed Lagos to Sokoto road. We, however, encourage the Federal Government to rehabilitate other federal infrastructure in the region.
“On security, the Forum commends the relative peace in the South-West region and notes the collaboration between all security agencies and the Amotekun Corps. We reaffirm our full support for State Police. We acknowledge the efforts of the Federal Government to strengthen food security. We decide that Commissioners for Agriculture of all the South-West states should begin to meet and set up a working template, which will ensure collaboration based on each State’s comparative advantage.”
On lingering disagreement on Minimum Wage, the Forum said it was in support of the efforts of the Federal Government, Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and the Organised Private Sector to resolve the wage dispute, while urging continued engagement with the Labour Union.
The Governors said they believed the outcome of the negotiations for better wages would reflect true fiscal federalism.
The Forum hailed the Federal Government’s efforts on exploration policies on mineral resources, but called for collaboration with States in the process to grant leases to investors.
The South-West Governors adopted a popular song composed by Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-cultural group, titled: “Ise wa fun ile wa”, as common anthem across the six States. They condemned, in strong terms, nefarious activities of a group of people agitating for Yoruba nation, stating that the region remained an integral part of the country.
“The Forum agrees to strengthen the DAWN Commission on operational efficiency and charges the Commission to focus on economic integration, cooperation and investment promotion of South-West states. To that end, each State is mandated to appoint a State focal person,” Sanwo-Olu said.
Jamestown123: Lol, I'm not giving myself headache over any Ezza people. Ezza were just settlers, who ran to Benue state then because of all these wars. The people of ezza were giving shelter and lands to farm and make a living by the people of Ado. It's now very shameful and hurtful to see them claiming the lands. It's going to make other villages be wary of them, and not decide to accommodate them. Because as it seems, the war between Uffiom and ezza is not ending soon. Nobody prays for war, but uffioms seems to be looking for trouble always and not backing down.
Have the Ezzas spent up to 200 years on the land you say is owned by the Ado folks of Benue State? I assume you're from Benue State as well.
I read some years back that the Ezzas were usually given temporary lands to use for farming after helping other ethnic groups or close neighbors to fight wars as mercenaries. It's improper for the Ezzas to renege on handing back lands that were leased to them say 100 years ago by their neighbors. People will be wary of them as being dishonest because of this if that is the case.
