while I agree that we have misplaced priorities concerning job expectations. But as much as it is everyone's business to do something, there'sstill a part Govt must play to provide an enabling environment, if not whhat are they there for?!

also blame our educational system thats structured to produce graduates who's mindset is focused on getting a job.

@james

You dont need 180k for one room at the places you mentioned

Better still go to areas like ogba where you will get a better deal.
Wish you all the best and pray God sees you through this period. Remember: This Too Shall Pass.

@ Jemit

You want to direct?
Do you have any training? And experience?

Well if you have all the above, what is stopping you? Get a short film script (2 mins will be fine) rent equipment and go shoot! If its your passion go do it!

If you are waiting for connections, well, na where you go sleep you don reach so!

@ Seun
Yes.
TV/MoviesRe: Is Widescreen Video Inherently Better? by krisbobo(m): 2:01pm On Nov 27, 2007
@Suen

Your conclusions are correct. Widescreen gives a filmy look.

You can fit 3 or more heads into a scene if blocking is well done andd you are lucky to be working with actors who are disciplined enough (and well trained too) to hit their spots. If you block and mark floors for movemnets, you should be fine even without wodescreen.

But i do agree that the aesthetics of widescreen is great. Have noticed that our directors do not frame to extremes as you'll find in foreing movies? they tend po place everyone in the middle.

TV/MoviesRe: How Much Do TV Writers Earn Per Episode? by krisbobo(m): 12:38am On Nov 25, 2007
@ Seun

I dont understand. Are you saying that you will pay each writer 15k per episode and if what has been written does not meet the episode breakdown or synopsis that was given to the writer you then pay 10k for someone else to rewrite?

I dont understand but what is normally applicable is that if you have decided to pay 15k per episode, you pay the writer 10k when he submits the 12st draft. when the script editor goes through and decides that the script is ok they you pay the balance. Otherwise you pay someone else who was a part of the workshop and has had his scripts finally accepted the balance of 5k to rewrite the episode.

I hope this helps.

@meldrick
I go put you for mind should i hear anything. Do sharpen your skills by getting some training. It is going to be cruscial soon that all screenwriters get some form of training or the other.

Thank all
TV/MoviesRe: Novels U'll Like To See In The Movies. by krisbobo(m): 8:36pm On Nov 22, 2007
@Grafikan

The Concubine has been made into film this year. It was directed by Andy Amenechi and was premiered at BOBTV Film and Television Expo (organised by Amaka Igwe and Charles Igwe) in Abuja in March.

I walked out after 7 minutes. It was an insult to a classic. The book is a classic of Nigerian literature and the film, at least what i saw of it, lacked the beauty and depth of the novel. Wale Adenuga did the same thing to Ola rotimi's play, The gods are not to Blame. I think people should just leave classics alone unless they can do them properly!

@Samm

The NFC had plans of doing The passport of Mallam Illia. Yinka Ogun was contacted to write the screenplay and I knew when he was writing it earlier in the year. that's the last i heard of the project.

I wont keep at this with you. We will talk about this sometime soon and you will accept that that camcorder cannot give you what you need, especially when we dey talk Music videos or TV drama. E fit work if na TV programme we be say una dey interview a few people about and then do studio.

Abeg, that sitcom wey u dey plan, no take this camera shoot am o. na God i take beg u. Na true, I am not a technology geek, I work on the creative end,

@Iyeyemi

chroma is no biggie. Search for it in Wikipedia and you'll have all the info you need. Watch LTV closely; they use Chroma a lot. A blue or green material, often satin, will do the work.
TV/MoviesRe: Cost Of Making A Music Video? by krisbobo(m): 7:27pm On Nov 21, 2007
@Seun

Let me say this once and for all: unless I am absolutely sure about what i am saying, I keep quiet.

The canon you just quoted will not give you the braodcast quality that is needed for a high quality Music video. Yes, Pd 170 is a DV camera but it is still being well used because most people still shoot DV, even with HDV cameras! I am on set as we speak, directing a Tv series. We are shooting with a Sony HDV Z1E. You will have seen it before; it is quiet popular now and dem don dey take am record wedding sef.

Most of the videos you see are actualy shot in DV format even when using an HDV camera. this is so 'cos editing HD is still not very common and broadcast media in Nigeria is still very analog and DV is the best they mostly can do at the moment.

RMD's Whitewater Communications still uses Pd 170. He at least should know what he us doing, abi?

There a standard in broadcast quality material in the industry. While we are still not fully at the level of HD, we are also not at the level of $800 camcorders.

Fuji House of Commotion and Tempest are shot with an HDV camera but in DV format. I should know.

My I humbly share a piece of advice with us all? Thanks. NEVER ADVICE ANYONE TO LEAVE A MARRIAGE! In fact, never advice anyone on the action to take in any circumstance. Never tell people what to do. The best you can do is to say that, were you to be in his/her shoes, so, so and so is what YOU would have done, and pls leave it at that. Let the person be the one to decide what to do and not run under the pretense of the fact that she was advised, even if we all know that invariably he/she decided to follow the advice.

I say this because, taking this case as example, we actually do not know the whole story. we know only what she has told us and, in my opinion, that is not enough for the conclusions that have been reached by most of the contributors so far. Please understand that I am not trying to sound like I know it all; I dont and I am willing to learn, but the little I know of life has taught me to be careful in giving advice.

Let me bore you a little with something that happened in secondary school, A friend reported that his stepmum was maltreating him, we told him that he was stupid for taking that kind of rubbish from a woman and that if it had happened to any of us we would have beaten the datlight out of such a stupid woman.

As you must have guessed, our friend beat the poor woman to a pulp during the next holiday. He took our advice in totality.

I agree that the situations are different but I think it shows what people can do when they take advice literaly.

I do not belive that we have the full picture of this jist. I do not belive in coincidences. Whatever this man has turned to did not start today; what exactly did she see that she decided to spend the rest of her life with him? I do agree that she may be young but, as it as been said by others here, a 23 yr old is nolonger a kid these days.  Patsy782, I am not questioning your noble intensions here and I am in no position to judge you. But lets all just, for a second, imagine that it is actually the man in question that started this thread and he told the story from his our perspective, what would we have been saying to him? I can bet my last kobo that the story would have been remarkably different.

After all said and done, the ball is in your court girl. Our people say "When a snail finds splinters in its shell it changes house" But the snail must ask itself first, how did my shell become splintered in the fist place.

I do believe that the man you married is not the man you are dealing with now. What went wrong? where your expectations realistic? No one ever knows why one person marries the other, but, again, ask yourself: why exactly did I marry this man?

I pray that God grants you wisdom to deal with all of this; it is never easy to live unhappily. whatever decision you come to, remember to be true to your heart and the God that lives therein.

I wish you peace.
TV/MoviesRe: Cost Of Making A Music Video? by krisbobo(m): 5:02pm On Nov 21, 2007
@poster

Pls read through the responses very carefully and you will notice those who actually have factual experience and those who are misinforming. there misinformation might not be intentional, so no malice

Crazt T gave the best advice: it's not the camera! dont ever shoot anything on 35mm right now in naija. for what? it does not guarantee any success. case in point. Jetta amata shot amazing grace on 35mm and decency will not let us say what sort of film it is. It cant even find international distribution, the reason why he shot 35mm in the 1st place.

120k camera? How?! How much is a Pd 170 or the other popular sony HDV? Not more than $4000. so?

Lights, screen and other stuff, plus stedicam self no too expensive to rent. If you know what u r doing you'll shoot mostlikely in 2-3days.

DJ Tee is probably the most popular guy in that area now and he does in the range of 800k-1m and so on but there are many others who can do very well too.

What you need the most, betond equipment, is a creative mind! all else is secondary.

@Roadblock

Thank for the info, largely true in lagos as in Abj. I dont have anything really to add except that peeps should also look for nice cinematographers, not just the director; he will be invaluable as far as picture is concerned.

Cheers
TV/MoviesRe: Cost Of Buying Air Time For A TV Show? by krisbobo(m): 5:04pm On Nov 18, 2007
@seun

Dont attempt a nationwide or global trasmission of your programme, yet. Start small. Don't go NTA; it is best watched outside Lagos. People in Lagos dont really watch NTA. Do MBI, STV or G65. When they programme has attracted a large audience, advertisers will be the ones that will ask you to take it to the next level.

Words of wisdom from Orikinla. Prices are not cast in concrete. When you have shot your 1st series, go to these stations with a few episodes and seat with the programmes director and have a chat; na you start Nairaland so no shaking grin grin grin

take a look at many of those TV drama, how many of them cn pay 750k for 30mins? Flatmate fit pay that kain money?

PoliticsRe: Nigeria Sues Cigarette Manufacturer Over Child Smokers by krisbobo(m): 8:49pm On Nov 09, 2007
Holding the wrong end of the broom, if you ask me.

Do what as been done elsewhere: stifling them with taxes and stuff; ensure that laws that prohibit sales to minors are enforced and do propaganda that will disuade minors from smoking.

That, perhaps, is all you can do. an outright ban is always counter productive as can be seen in anything that is baned; people just love to do things that are banned! Has banning smoking anywhere ever significantly reduced smoking? Dont think so
TV/MoviesRe: How Much Do TV Writers Earn Per Episode? by krisbobo(m): 6:33pm On Nov 09, 2007
Seun, under no circumstances should you pay any writer 50k for this job! No freaking way!!!!

I second Sleekymag; your total budget should determine what you are paying. Dont forget that you still have production and post product costs to bear!

50k? NA BEANS!!! not even BBC and MNET, the biggest payers, pay that kind of money!

I said I was shooting a new series for my teacher, abi? Not even my teacher, who has produced, directed and written for TV in Naija for almost 20 yrs and has created the most popular TV sitcoms and soaps in naija pays that kind of money! The script we are shooting will sell as others have and its a great idea but the writter was not paid that kind of money and neither is the director and I the co-director being paid 50k per episode.

pls let's be realistic here. I am all for equitable renumeration and I have earned some money as a screenwriter so this is not about not thinnking that writers are unimportant; I am one too even if I dont do much writing these days.

If you pay writer 50k per ep, how much you go pay Director? And seun, this is a very small industry; the momont people hear that u paid writers that much, crew and artistes will be asking you for ridiculous amounts of money!!

I wish you were doing this script conference in Lagos, I would have introduced a couple of writers to you who will accept 15k and deliver great scripts.

thread carefully Seun. A lot of misinformation dey town o!

Peace
TV/MoviesRe: How Much Do TV Writers Earn Per Episode? by krisbobo(m): 8:21pm On Nov 08, 2007
@Seun

Yeah, some of the guys who wrote Doctors' Quarters earn that kind of huge amount, but even then the money was not fully paid to most of them, in fact many inside jist dey wey I no fit yarn for open forum. those that wrote Edge of Paradise did not also earn that much, possibly with the exception of Femi Kayode, the head writer.

Those that are writing the  Tinsel, the new MNET soap in naja will earn even less, akthough it should be a long term project, hopefully.

Seun, depending on the calibre of writers you will be working with, i dont think you should pay more than 10k, that is industry standard to some extent.

This is a new project and I think you should bring everybody on board on tht fact. Avoid anyone who writes primarily for money; they always have mercinery tendencies. I am not say people should not be duly compensated o, but the person must also show a commitment to the job beyond money.

If i were free at this time, i would have come for the conference for free, although i woudnt have written, but my shoot still has 2 weeks at the least to go.

Seun, please, if you have not read Robert Mckee's STORY pls do so before you go into the workshop. You will need the knowledge. If you promise to be good with my copy, I can loan it to you for a week or two. you will have to come and pick it up around Marwa garden. Alternatively, since you are internet sarvy, u can by one on Amazon. A nw one is like 20pounds buit u can get faily used a lot cheaper.

All the best.
TV/MoviesRe: Writers: Abeg Help Nollywood! by krisbobo(m): 5:26pm On Nov 08, 2007
Guys,

many writeres fail to make it besause they focus on nollywood.

There's a booming market for other writers outside nollywood. It nollywood wont buy your script, move over to television soaps and series!

there are script conferences all over these days and people are always looking for good writers in that area. You will make btw 10-15k per episode.

before you begin to look for the oppurtunities, pls make sure you have some training! it is crucial. As seun said, talent alone is not enough!

If you are abroad, I fear that you have a lot of work to do. Most inportantly, especially if you've been away for long, you need to understand the Nigerian audience and leave you your notions of superiority aside.

I have a couple of trained directors, guys that were trained abroad, who cannot direct a commercial film or Tv drama for a Nigerian audience.

All the best
