This is a long write up but it is very good to read for people who always compare Nigeria to the western countries

The problem with Nigeria is our mentality. An average Nigerian is all about money, money, houses, SUV etc and this is why this question is always coming up. Because of our greed and our ability to acquire, acquire and acquire, our society have been built on storing money, properties. It is not surprising to see Nigerians in Nigeria with fat bank account, many houses with high fence and big gate, high SUV yet the street they live is littered with bad roads and full of generator noise because that is what we care about.

The western world is different because they are not built for people to store money. Their system is designed for money to circulate. This is why even services we pay peanuts for here is Nigeria is costly abroad. Everyone is given the opportunity to live a base life and if you want to be rich you can use your brain and do something extraordinary. For example, a barber, cleaner, nanny etc in the western world has the opportunity to live a normal life. He can save a little money, make a little down payment and buy a house or car on mortgage despite being just a barber. He gets to enjoy his tokunbo car and 2 bedroom apartment even though he is paying for it in the next 10 years. Even if he dies before he finish paying, he cannot say that he didn’t enjoy the basic things of life. Enjoying the basic things of life is not left for the rich alone.
In Nigeria, some people can never enjoy the basic things of life forever. For example, a cleaner, nanny etc can never buy a car because Nigeria is designed for the rich to exploit the poor and there is no buffer to help the poor.

A top bank manager earning more than 1 million naira a month cannot bring out 50k to pay a Nanny or gateman. Instead he will go and bring one Ekaite from the village whom he will exploit as slave. Ekaite will do all the jobs in the house and will not even go to school for the first 3 years. After 3 years, they will now send her to a local school where children sit on the floor even though their own children are going to posh schools. During Christmas, they give Ekaite’s family a bag of rice and 20k and the family is happy due to poverty. But this same man store millions of naira in his account and building lots of houses yet his gateman is just paid 10k a month. In the western world, the bank manager will have over 60% of his earnings go into the payment of other services. That means he will pay the Nanny, guards, gardeners, cleaners, barber etc that works for him an hourly minimum wage. So he has little money to save and build mansions here and there but the good thing is that the people in the lower cadre live a normal life off him and the money circulates.

The Nigerian society is built for exploitation unlike the western world. The greatest disservice to poor man in Nigeria is that they are not paid hourly. The rich man/organizations takes all their time and pay them pea nut at the end of the month but a poor man aboard can work 24 hours and be paid for those 24 hours if he has the strength.

So before you travel, you need to understand how the western society works and what exactly you want. If your aim is to make millions and become rich, build houses here and there, the western society is not for you, you can become rich easier in Nigeria. It is only in Nigeria, you can become rich overnight.
You can go to china, import some substandard goods into the country, bribe SON and customs and sell your goods and make mega millions in a jiffy and build your mansions here and there. If you run a business, you can avoid paying taxes, just tip the FIRS and they would look the other way and you take those taxes you should have paid and build mansions for yourself, you are rich! The FIRS,Custom, SON guys make mega money and build their own mansions, you make your own mega money too, the ordinary people and the government are shortchanged but the govt is not bothered because they loot their own from crude oil directly. In fact, Nigeria is a goldmine if you have the mind and can throw away your conscience. Dem no born you well to not pay your taxes in the western world or do anyhow in the western world.

If you work in many organizations, you may not have to touch your salary because you will be getting illegal cash every day. For example, if you work in immigration, you will be getting 3k, 4k from people who want to get their passport else they may have to wait for one year to get it. If you work in universities, you will be getting extra 3k, 4k, 2k from people who wants their transcripts else they will look for your results for the next one year and so many examples. If you add up this monies, you can see that you are getting more than your salary from your little office. No wonder these civil servants you see have a lot of money. This is what you can never get abroad.

So you can see that it is easy to make it in Nigeria but it comes at a cost. A country where nothing works. No light, no water, bad roads, bad schools, hospitals, insecurity etc. There is no fine house in Nigeria that does not have a high fence and a big gate. In the western world, you would hardly see a fenced house because the police is 2 minutes away from your phone call.

So our mentality is different from the western world. While the western world cares more about the larger society, we care about our individual self and individual wealth and this is why we are richer individually than them but they are richer and better collectively as a society than us. The question you should ask before you travel is what you value more as an individual.

Dude, there are lots of IT training one can do without breaking banks. Have you heard of self taught programmers, ethical hackers etc? What circle of friends in US do you mingle with, seriously? The thing is that lots of Nigerians here are not tech savvy and smart, and they always end up settling for anything and get comfortable with it. Why dont we have a national air carrier since d death of Nigerian Airways. Is it not a shame we dont ve a national air carriers when even aid dependent Ethiopia has one with latest aircrafts in their fleet or Kenya Air or RwandAir. Qatar that has d same oil as we do had only 2 aircrafts in its fleet but now has 209 aircrafts. Where is Nigeria Airways? Is there any plans to revamp it? Even private airlines where almost moribund recently.

I visit Nigeria once or twice yearly, no difference, it is the same bulshit all over the country, immediately l disembark from the plane, sometimes I am welcomed with power failure in an international airport , next is the terrible stench oozing out from the toilets and yet billions of naira have been budgeted yearly to make the airport of world standard, my last visit l came via Qatar airways, l transited Qatar enroute to lagos, Doha airport is like a 5star hotel clean and very neat, but on arrival in the jungle called Nigeria, it was like leaving Paradise to hell, instead of them to speak against the thieving politicians who have rendered the country a cesspit of poverty, they are busy attacking those who managed to leave the useless jungle, what a shame

AMERICA: Is a country built by immigrants. Asides from the native Indian, the land was populated and built by like minded people who left their (UK, Irish, Italians etc) home countries in search of a better life.

When there was famine in Ireland in the 1800's, a lot of them left for the UK to ensure their survival.

When the brits set off to colonise Africa and Asia, the proceeds of their invasion and theft was used to develop their home country. Even where there was corruption, the average persons still benefitted from the wealth of the British Empire not just a select few hoarding it for themselves.

However, however old their history might be, they have always followed the rule of law, their laws, from the time of monarchy to a parliamentary system fought for by Oliver Cromwell. So regardless of what hardships, challenges they may have faced, those laws ensured that things did not deteriorate into total anarchy so there was always method to rebuilding afterwards.

But that's not the case in Nigeria is it? People are not law abiding,jungle justice mentality pervades. You open your gob to say people become millionaires overnight and a part of your brain did not even pause to question "how?"
The end for you people justifies the means hence you don't care about the process.
Is even becoming a millionaire an achievement or rather the success of an entire society? I look down on you, not for living in Nigeria but for your typically Nigerian mentality which is feral at best.

When you start to talk about access to quality education, health care, basic amenities and security for all, then I might start to think yes, there is something worthy in that place. However if you keep chatting shit about millionaires, then you deserve that hellhole you live in. Why? Because your measure of the success of your society is the reason why it's fvcked in the first place.

Nigeria is our collective responsibility. Running all over the world to countries that collectively fixed their problem and abandoning yours is being penny wise pound foolish. It still your country whether you like it or not and you're representatives/ambassadors of it whereever you find yourself. If you keep tarnishing her image, you're tarnishing your own image.

I'm not against migration, to each his own. My comment is merely aimed at those who think the fact they migrated to a developed country makes them better than us who even if offered a chance to live anywhere in the world would still choose to stick around to contribute our quota to the system.

Chief - when you want to argue a situation, you MUST have sufficient knowledge and in most cases support your statements with evidences.

The real estate industry in Nigeria is largely driven by debt and prior to 2015 election, illicit funds. That is why the industry is depressed now because people cannot make purchases as before. There is absolutely nothing wrong with debt. Infact debt finance is very sweet and cheap if you know how to utilize funds because you are using other people’s funds to increase your income.

If our government is sensible or competent, they will encourage mortgages.

The guy is actually right. I've spent almost 25 years here and I can tell you that it's extremely tough to save $400 per month on a $55,000 annual salary, I'm not saying you can't but its very hard especially when when you're paying $1200/month for rent, $100/month for electric bills, $70 on phones, $250/month on car insurance, $250 on gas/month, $50 on cables/month maybe $400 or less/month on food the rest can't even be accounted for like credit cards bills, line of credit or over-draft, olosho etc.

The thing is, you pay up to $17000 in taxes alone from the $55,000 depending which states you reside, then if you owe back-taxes, IRS might garnished up to another 10% of whatever that is left after basic taxes and deductions. By the time you get your pay cheque in your account bi-weekly, you don't even have enough to cover your rent let alone to eat. This is why you have more than 10 time the number of homeless people in USA compare to Nigeria. I don't want to scare you but it is inevitable. Take the current US President for an example, he was once almost homeless too. (google it)

It's not that you cant make big money, it's just that you can't save it (easily).

Nigeria on the other hand, once you have a mindset of doing everything by yourself and ignore the government, that is just the beginning of wisdom. Naija is a shit- hole no doubt but it's also a country where you can bend the rules to your advantage. And for only that reason alone with determinations, the sky is not the limit but the beginning. I'm not here to preach, all you need is N500k.

If Americans were asked to advance 6 months rent over 280 million of them will sleep on the street and if their paycheck is delayed for one week then 65% of them will sleep inside the gutter. I know there's no place like home but when home isn't inhabitable you can find someplace else and call it home. Everyday thousands of people come into this country from all over the world to call this place home.
My job took me to Nigeria where I lived for two years before coming back to the US. Nigeria may not be as bad as western Media paints it to be, however it isn't a country I'd advise anybody to live in.

Every part of the country is relatively messed up, morally bankrupt and irredeemably backward, with retrograded mindset set of people from a radicalized north to an extremely Christianized south. Corruption thrives in the Nigerian oxygen, every Nigerian seems to breathe it in without even knowing - thank goodness i didn't catch the bug...

The system is broken beyond repair. Think about ur kids and how unfavorable the system would be to them. I have never seen a government so apathetic and nonchalant to the plight of her people. The life expectancy of the average Nigerian is very low compared to other western countries that's because people die from treatable illnesses due to a failed health care system, majority do not have access to good health care...
your savings in your 401k may allow you get a nice apartment in a middle-class area but remember that, that isn't the real Nigeria, the real Nigeria is outside your home, the society you interacts with, the deplorable roads you drive on when you go see a friend or relative that lives on the other side of town, the corrupt judicial system where the word justice is nothing but a farce, the society your kids interacts with - i could go on and on - unless you wanna live in a gated neighborhood with zero interaction with the outside world then discard this advise.

If you are looking for more money investing in the country is a good idea but living in it is not. you can invest from here, you don't have to relocate.
Think it through thoroughly sleep on it over and over again to avoid taking a decision you will regret for the rest of your life.
