Victory for democracy. |
Another shoeless story? |
The Peoples Democratic Party is pleased to welcome to the 2015 presidential contest, a former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, who declared his intention today, Wednesday, October 15, 2014. While we congratulate and wish him well in his ambition, we have noted some distortions and misrepresentation of facts in his speech and consequently wish to put the record straight. According to General Buhari, Nigeria was generating 4000 megawatts of electricity in 1999 but has today fallen short of that capacity under the PDP. However, the fact remains that as at May 29th 1999 when PDP took office, Nigeria was generating 1600 MWs. We urge Nigerians to fact- check on this. Corroboration of this figure can also be sought from the World Bank, the IMF and multiple other authoritative sources. In contrast, it is common knowledge that under the transformative leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria now generates 4,568 MWs of electricity; a triple of what was generated in 1999. Again, General Muhammadu Buhari stated that a growing economy which the PDP inherited in 1999 has been destroyed within 15 years in office. This also does not represent the reality on the ground. The fact which can be verified from the hand-over notes from the military as well as from the World Bank and IMF is that Nigeria was the third largest economy in Africa in 1999, behind South Africa and Egypt. The nation was also rated number 48 in the world, our Foreign Reserve at $3.6 Billion while our foreign debt stood at $36 billion. However, it is incontrovertible that in the last 15 years of PDP leadership, especially the last three years of dynamic and purposeful administration provided by President Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria’s economy has become the largest in Africa and the 26th largest in the world. Similarly, our Foreign Reserve is now over $39 billion dollars, and our foreign debts reduced to less than $7 billion from $36 billion. Besides, General Buhari also told supporters that Nigeria’s agricultural sector has gone down under the PDP, a statement which also does not reflect the reality on the ground. Verily, the fact remains that in the last 15 years under the PDP, indeed, the last three years of vigorous application of the Agricultural Transformation Agenda, there has been an unparalleled government input in agriculture, thereby pushing production to an all-time high. Moreover, Nigeria food import has reduced from N1.1 trillion in 2010 to N684 billion. While we understand that the APC is hell-bent on using every opportunity at its disposal to discredit the PDP in quest for political control, we urge their handlers to always cross-check their facts and stop making mockery of respected Nigerians in the mould of General Buhari. Finally, the PDP again welcomes General Buhari into the presidential race and hopes that in the future, he will not allow himself to be further embarrassed in the course of his campaign. Stephen Keshi Super Eagles interim coach, Stephen Keshi, has rubbished reports suggesting that he shut out Villarreal of Spain Striker, Ikechukwu Uche, from the national team. Keshi said he was quoted out of context by many reporters at Wednesday’s media parley in Abuja. “I don’t know where they got that portion of their reports from, but I never said Uche won’t play as long as I remain coach of the team. In the near future, if he changes his mind and indicates interest to play he will be considered on merit,” Keshi was quoted as saying in a media statement from Super Eagles media officer, Ben Alaiya. Keshi appealed that attention should not unnecessarily be on Uche but instead on players willing and ready at all times to play for the Super Eagles. The relationship between Keshi and Uche has grown from bad to worse since the African Cup of Nations in South Africa where the Big Boss claimed the young striker did not play to his instructions. The situation saw Uche missing out on the Brazil 2014 World Cup despite a public outcry. After much appeal from several quarters, when it was looking like Uche would return to the national team, Keshi again claimed that the Villarreal of Spain striker wanted to be begged before he played for the national team. The allegation was promptly denied by Uche. Meanwhile, the striker did not make the list of 24 players for the upcoming crunch against Sudan.https://www.premiumtimesng.com/sports/169306-keshi-ready-to-reconsider-ikechukwu-uche.html |

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has admitted the possibility of hiring a foreign coach for the Super Eagles. Speaking on a television programme, the new boss of the federation said that his board could opt for a foreign coach to replace Stephen Keshi if the need arises. “It is very possible that we could get a foreign coach but first we have to give Keshi a chance. He is a hero and we should treat him as such,” Pinnick said. “He has won the Nations Cup both as a player and as a coach for Nigeria and we must regard him with respect. “I very much support us having local coaches and I will encourage that. But if it happens that he can’t continue, then we may get a foreign coach.” Keshi’s contract ran out at the end of Nigeria’s participation at the World Cup in Brazil and he’s only handling the team on an interim basis. He will do his chances of being retained as Eagles’ coach a great harm if Nigeria fails to qualify and defend their AFCON title in Morocco next January. http://www.thecable.ng/pinnick-eagles-get-foreign-coach |
Immediate-past governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Obi, who served two terms as governor on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), announced the decision during a visit of top members of the PDP in the southeast to his residence in Onitsha. Chief Okwesilieze Nwodo, a former chairman of PDP, told Obi that the PDP visitors were there to request him to join them in PDP and “work with us as an insider and no more an outsider” “PDP was founded by our own man, Dr. Alex Ekwueme and we started winning 80 per cent in the Southeast zone until such a time when we drew backwards but we believe that with you in our midst, we shall return to our winning spree. I now move a motion requesting you to here and now give us your word,” Nwodo said. Obi enjoys a cordial relationship with President Goodluck Jonathan. In January, the national executive committee of APGA appointed him national leader and chairman of the party’s board of trustees, but he resigned in August. APGA played a major role in shaping the political career of Obi, as Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu, its founder, was actively involved in the electioneering campaign of the former governor, particularly during his second-term bid in 2010. Obi is not the only bigwig to have joined the ruling party from an opposition party in recent times. On Thursday, governor of Ondo state, Olusegun Mimiko announced his defection to PDP from Labour Party (LP), on whose platform he contested and won two governorship elections.http://www.thecable.ng/ex-anambra-governor-peter-obi-defects-pdp |
Former military president, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), has shifted the formal declaration ceremony of his intention to contest the 2015 presidential election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The declaration, earlier scheduled for Wednesday, October 8, 2014, will now hold on Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at the Eagle Square, Abuja. Dr. Audu Ogbeh, coordinator of the event and former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who announced the postponement, said all earlier arrangements remain the same.www.thecable.ng |

Skillbobralph:I tire o . Politicians deceiving electorates since 1999 |
THE Majority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly,Mr Philip Shaibu has disclosed that each lawmaker in the state House of Assembly receives the sum of N36million yearly for constituency projects, urging the people of the state to demand for records of their stewardship. Shaibu, who is representing Etsako West at the State Assembly, disclosed this during the commissioning of blocks of 3 classrooms at Jattu and Ugiede respectively, where he also hinted of his intention to run for the House of Representatives seat. He urged the electorate not to be deceived by lawmakers who are in the habit of saying that they have no business in the execution of projects but the executive, adding that the decision was reached between the Executive and the legislators in the state so as to spread the dividends of democracy across the state. According to him,”It is not true that what we do is mainly making laws because before I came into the House, I never knew constituency projects exist . Prior to this period, we get N20 million annually but between 2013 and 2014, the Comrade governor had to increase it to N36million so that we will be able to execute quality projects. And I thank God that my own projects are there for everyone to see and other lawmakers must show their constituency projects to the people. “I challenge the electorates to demand accountability from their representatives because we have one file which the governor approves for the 24 members including the PDP lawmakers. Sometimes my colleagues tackle me when I make public what comes to my constituency but I don’t think it is something hidden unless you decide to pocket the money rather than work for the people and this is what I want our people to investigate” he said. www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/get-n36m-annually-constituency-projects-shaibu/ |
