Originalsly: Does the yam look like it was being cleaned?... seems like a must a whole lot of spice must be added to any story. Most likely the yam felt too heavy... 5he guy got suspicious and cut it to see if anything was inside.
Fruits and vegetables, yams and such are not even allowed to enter abroad.... it would have been confiscated anyway. From experience.... before they check... they will ask if any item was given to you. If you answer no... then you take full responsibility for anything illegal. If yes... you ID the items and they will check. If found then you are likely to get off the hook.
As for me... almost always... people ask when I'm returning... that they have something for me to take for somebody. In either tell them I'm leaving days after mybactual travel date.... or.... whatever they brought would be left back for one reason nor another.
Now what should he do with this loaded yam? Let his people sell the weed and take the money? Return a similar yam to the friend and let him know he didn't get a chance to take it?...was overweight? .... putting the friend in a position to confess he was using him as a trafficker? Yam is very much allowed so long as it's washed so that there's no soil on it. Soil could have pests on them that would affect the agriculture of the receiving country. |

GodWrites: Cannabis is now legalized in most countries and definitely wouldn't have landed him into any trouble, unless he traveled with more than the recommended ounce. Those countries you're talking about only legalized the use of cannabis within their country but ban importation of cannabis into their country especially of such quantity. |

Redberyl: I never said that.My point is that people don't talk about the realities of living there.Again, it's a personal decision.Go on quora and read up experiences of Americans, Indians, chinese and Nigeriana that live there. It's not as rosy as many expect it to be. I'm glad you know it's a personal decision. I would have been more glad if you also appreciated the fact that these experiences you shared from Quora are also people's personal experiences because in everything we do our stories would always differ. That some people are finding life in Canada difficult doesn't mean it is difficult for every immigrant in Canada. Canada never promised anyone a job once they land in their airports or to bottlefeed you till the rest of your life, there's no such place on earth to the best of my knowledge. And of course it wouldn't be business as usual once you move to a new place, there have to be a shift in your own paradigm. And not all of us jumped on the bandwagon, I personally did my research and I don't regret my moving to Canada at all, but it doesn't translate to your opinion that my life was hopeless in Nigeria. It is fine if you believe Canada isn't for you, but please don't insult the intelligence of every Nigerian that moved to Canada, you don't know our individual reasons. Enjoy your day. |

Redberyl: This thread prompted me to do research about life for immigrants in Canada.
The Canadian dream we have been sold is just good PR by their government,in addition to some sweets thrown in (Free health care, free education, child support). All this is indirectly paid for by way of taxes. The unemployment rate is high, high cost of living and rent.
Now,on the relaxed immigration policies to Canada. The Canadian government isn't doing anyone a favour.Rather they are luring you in to build their workforce, increase their population and also generate a lot of revenue off the visa fees immigrants pay. The fact is this, the more persons that immigrate there, the more tax revenue the govt makes!
So many Nigerians don't do any research before moving there, they just want to escape from Nigeria.I will attach screenshots of persons living in canada as found on quora so everyone can know what to expect before moving there.
If you want to get a true picture of what life can be in canada,go on quora. Many are not saying the truth here on nairaland. It's not so rosy.
Imagine a Nigerian who left here, was living in a one bedroom basement apartment with his wife and 3 kids. Both of them work but can't make enough to get a bigger apartment. So they basically live from hand to mouth!
My thoughts are this: Canada is for persons who don't really have much going on for them here or persons who have made so much money, that even if they aren't making enough money there, they have savings to live off on. So what you're trying to say now is that every Nigerian that has moved to Canada is struggling and are lying about their struggling? |

No day goes by on nairaland without a thread on unaged girls getting raped or molested.
The worst part is that these kids aren't safe from the ones that are meant to protect them the most (family).
