AgricultureRe: Sprinkler Irrigation System by lagbaja(m): 6:25am On Aug 07, 2014
It's pretty easy. Go to Orile plumbing materials market. The sprinkler that covers a radius of 3meter square is sold for about N1000. There are 2 types. The plastic and brass types. The brass types are a bit more expensive. You need about 10 pieces to cover a plot of land. YOu will need to buy pvc pipes and connectors. In all N20,000 will do the job on a plot of land measuring 60 by 120ft. If you know how to do the plumbing, it will save you more costs, it's pretty easy to install.

Going by the current price of weaners at N3500, and the time and space you save from not farrowing, Fattening is definitely more profitable than farrrowing. The biggest challenges to d practise are sourcing quality weaners in large quantity and bio-security concerns.

Brewers spent grain does have fibre and cellulose. I believe the baker's yeast will work similarly, though I have not tried it. You can try it and give us a feedback. Here is a research material that captures it.

Add baker's yeast to your feed in the portion of 3g for every 1kg and see the fantastic results. It improves growth rate by up to 30%. The baker's yeast helps break down the normally undigested cellulose and fibre in the feed. I have demonstrated it and it works. See research work here : http://www.lrrd.org/lrrd16/10/akin16082.htm

pure breed am looking for should be from totally pure parents. in most cases pure is difficult or impossible to get in Nigeria.
most of the prices have been hearing is funny. 70k for Weaners, even obasanjo own sef is also expensive. i have my reservations on the whole purebreed thing but that's what my client wants.
@ lagbaja pls how much did you get purebreed from Astron farms?
I got my weaners for N30k each after waiting for 3 months. They could not meet my total order because their grand parent breeding stock arrived earlier in the year and would take sometime for them to farrow enough.

PoliticsJonathan Campaigns For 2015 On London Buses by lagbaja(op):
http://www.nigerianwatch.com/news/4910--goodluck-brings-his-election-campaign-to-london-with-red-bus-publicity-blitz

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has stepped up his campaign for the 2015 presidential elections with the commencement of an appeal to the diaspora in the UK through the use of London's red buses. Although so far President Jonathan is yet to formally declare that he will run in next year's elections, all the signs are that he will. Up and down Nigeria, numerous groupings have endorsed his candidacy and the president's ruling People's Democratic Party has been tough on potential opponents. Over the last week, President Jonathan extended his appeal to the 2m strong Nigerian diaspora in the UK with a public campaign involving the use of banners on London's popular red buses. Bearing slogan London for Goodluck, the banners have been plastered across several buses that ply the capital. Last month, the government hired the Washington, DC public relations firm Levick to promote its image abroad and in Nigeria, although it is not yet clear if it was the agency that placed the advertisement. Technically, the contract is between Levick and the News Agency of Nigeria but Levick began charging the government at the rate of $100,000 per month over the course of the next year for its services starting on June 16. According to the terms of the contract between the PR giant and Nigeria, Levick will provide government affairs and communications counsel with the primary objective of changing the international and local media narrative on a number of issues. These include efforts to mobilise international support in fighting Islamic terrorists Boko Haram as part of the greater global war on terror and helping find the Chibok schoolgirls. Not to be outdone, Nigeria's main opposition party the All Progressive Congress (APC) recently hired its own foreign public relations firm to take charge of its impending 2015 campaign at a whopping cost of $1.2m. London public relations firm Burson-Marsteller has been hired by the APC to handle all of its media campaigns for the next 12 months up to and beyond the 2015 elections. Although Nigerians in the UK and the diaspora at large cannot vote, a lot of them will be returning to the country to participate in next year's elections. For several years, the diaspora has been campaigning for the right to vote in elections but a bill proposing this was defeated the last time it was debated in the National Assembly. - See more at: http://www.nigerianwatch.com/news/4910--goodluck-brings-his-election-campaign-to-london-with-red-bus-publicity-blitz#sthash.EgBUI3Td.dpuf

BDG - Brewers Dried Grain
AgricultureRe: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by lagbaja(m):
dejia: @ omode2:
I dont sell A.I semens yet, it requires you to have a lab for analysis and some few other things which isnt attainable yet, also i want to compare the cross breed with a pureblood line and see which gives the best result.
for now, all i sell are crossbreed ( growers from A.I +Obasanjo); i have some few boars for sale, am keeping all the females because i want to inseminate them to get a pureblood line and see which is better.
easyflexx & Lagbaja: Honestly, i think A.I is the way to go; most farmers in developing countries now specialize, i have seen farms with 500 sow, without a simple boar, they just buy semens and inseminate, some farmers also specialise in semens production alone ; that is what we should aim for in Nigeria, also , with A.I you can easily predict your outcome, with natural mating its treaky, you will find some sow gives as low as 4-7 piglets, when you can easily secure a minimum of 14 with A.I; remember the gestation period is the same, so why let your sow give u 6, when you can have 16? even if it will cost u more? A.I is expensive but i think it pays itself.
Guys, lets talk about feed; from my analysis, i think BDG is very good for pigs, my challenge is the processing ( drying),so i wont mind getting it wet and dry it myself, is it true BDG is free in ilesha?, and all you have is to get your truck to pick up.
Am also looking for a good source for blood meal, from my analysis, it has 88% protein, but i heard some feedmill, mixes it with burnt tyre; where can i source it from?
@dejia, I am 100% in support of AI, my previous question directed to eazeefix was to question the rationale of using estrumate without A.I and he has explained why he was looking for it.

blood meal is available in Lagos at abattoir, oko oba, though poorly processed. You will have to reheat to be sure it's 100% pathogen free. You have the option of buying fresh blood and processing it yourself to avoid the shenanigans.

Getting BDG is a big challenge, even the wet one is much highly demanded than supplied on the Lagos/Ogun axis. Your best bet is to look for an alternative that is available consistently and affordable. Check my previous formulation again. If you have poultry sellers near your farm, you could collect the chicken offals and use as source of protein. PKC is more readily available. It is sold at Ilaro by Al Rashid refinery for N23 per kg farm gate. It is 2nd crushed which means its oil content is very low.
AgricultureRe: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by lagbaja(m): 10:32am On Jul 22, 2014
eazeefix: Thanks bro, I just searched for estrumate online was told I needed vet prescription to purchase so how get yours? I sent you a mail don't know if you got it. Would love hook up. I finished from unilorin so know Ilorin a bit. Whatsapp on 08023116432 bbm pin 7C1A18C6. Osun will be good for BDGs I'm still trying to explore what Ogun has in abundance. We wait endlessly for spent grains so looking for alternative feeding models.
@eazeefix, why do you want to use estrumate if you are not currently doing artificial insemination. Are your sows not coming on heat ?

AgricultureRe: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by lagbaja(m):
dejia: Hi farmers,
I have taken time to read almost all the post, i have learnt alot , we hope to learn more from each other
Am a pig farmer in ilorin.. Yes, ilorin ; our farm is 2years old , we have about a 30 sow production,
with a capacity of about 70 sow unit.( still growing)
We only use A.I from PIC in SA ,to cross the breed we got from Obasanjo, we dont even have a boar on the farm.
We decided to go this route, when we noticed we bought some piglets from a farm when we started 2years ago, immediately they got to about 45kg
they simply stopped growing, even when we feed them with soyabeans and maize, the best we got was 48kg. We eventually sold them losing
money;
I took time to research and did a training in piggery training in SA from a farm that has 6,000 sow unit, and discovered it might be inbreeding problem;
In SA, at 7months weigh about 135kg averagely while a 7months old pig in Nigeria weigh about 45kg,
what we are trying to do is to bridge the gap and have atleast 80kg within 7months,
i know alot of expert here will argue that breed isnt the only reason, for the weight diff.. i also
agree but it is one of the biggest factors.
but if you are able to achieve 80kg in 7months, you wont mind to feed maize and soyabeans, eventhough they are expensive ( we dont feed that)
We inseminated my first set of sow Sept last year, and they littered early this year, some gave us as high as 19 piglets, in SA, any litter less than 14 isnt accepted for A.I, something must have gone wrong in the process
Our third set of A.I litter has started littering since last week, and we hope to wean them after 40days, and re-inseminate
10days after than. We synchronise our sow, so we inseminate them in batches
From my experience, A.I is the way to go ( some farmers might not agree), foreign breed is necessary to prevent inbreeding . We intend to re-inseminate our first batch end of August, as they will be about 80kg and ready to be served. with that, we hope to get a pure PIC breed by Jan,2015. We are still experimenting and researching, but we are happy with the result so far.
We are a breeders farm, majorly looking at serving those who want to go into piggery, Our pigs dont come cheap, because of
the cost associated with bringing in A.I into the country; but i can tell you, its worth it.
Also, let me also advice, farrowing crate is a must.
Liquid feeding is also the best way, mix your feed with water before giving it to the pigs, we mix our water with
multi-vitamins and then mix it with the feed. We also use a growth promoter instead of broiler premix
I also read post about nipples, well we have been using nipples for 2years, a sow requires about 20liters of water
when lactating, how do you serve her that? Also i noticed alot of people give there pigs dirty water; it is totally wrong
from trainning, the farmer must be able to drink the water the pig drinks, so ensure you supply clean water.
Am openned to help any new farmer, who wants to learn from my 2years experience.
Welcome dejia. Excellent contributions.

excelsiorfarm: if d breed is diseased, same will be d fluid, artificial insemination is mostly to avoid d cumbersome nature /stress of moving pigs, even other animals from one place to another . Before undertaken such practice, visit d farm/farms that undertake such practices, ask for d record of the intended boar(if they are sincere), u will be able to know any health challenges if any and deformity, understand d related health issue on d farm, treatment or biosecurity standard on such farm. Whether u bring d fluid or the boar, if diseased, d cross sows shall be host to it on d farm.
@Excelsiorfarm, this practice will lead to a breach of biosecurity. In as much as you as the buyer can do the due diligence check, you can not say the same of the person you are buying from. As a commercial practice, he must have mated the Boar with many Soars from different farms. Susceptibility to diseases becomes higher. Collecting sem.en from a professional seller eliminates the need for interaction of the stock with other pig stocks.

@femu, Astron Farms which I earlier quoted is the same farm that offers the services. they sell the se.men of their pure genetic breeds for N3500 per dose. I have not used the service before because I have 2 Boars that mates my herd of Soars and they are not of same lineage.
AgricultureRe: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by lagbaja(m): 1:26am On Jul 18, 2014
femu: not a good practice, they can bring swine fever to your farm. Never borrow or lend out your boar!!!
Not a good practice at all, I agree with femu on this. Rather you go for artificial insemination. It's a new concept here. I know a farm that already has it as a service.
AgricultureRe: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by lagbaja(m):
TOLUWAYEMI: Using spent grain or brewery waste as alternative to Maize/cassava as postulaated by Lagbaja,do you get same result? Also, seeing that spent grains comes in wet,do you use the soaked weight of PKC or dry? With other condiments stirred in? Is using vegetables like waterleaf and waste like cassava peels, and plantain peels of any nutritional advantage?
Spent grain is more of a protein source than an energy source (they contain between 20 and 24% crude protein in the dry state). Remember that the carbohydrate (energy) content of the grain is what brewers used for making their beer.

Use the dry weight of pkc for your feed formulation. Be careful with fibrous leaves like plantain leaves and peels, they are high in cellulose content and therefore are not very ideal for mono gastric animals like pigs.

Here is a sample formulation containing brewers' spent grain

eazeefix: Genetics, balanced feed and responsible use of feed additives can help achieve lean carcass my first attempt at sale some of my pigs were fatty. I was then advised to add salt to their feed. Still researching the possibility of choline chloride as a fat burner as applied for poultry. Will post some formulae that are said to produce lean meat.
An easy way out of this is to target sales at 60 to 65kg size. At this stage. Lean meat is more guaranteed.

Here is a simple farrowing crate that could be constructed by local welders.

AgricultureRe: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by lagbaja(m):
femu: it's important for us to examine both sides of any suggestions in order to get the best and help beginner farmers.
the issue of hot water when using nip.ples isn't to be underestimated in agriculture... the solution, you have just stated after we examined it.
when we suggest brewery waste and cassava we must let beginners know inappropriate use can lead to mortality.

@lagbaja what happens to the soakaway when it gets filled? I once did 60ft and it got filled in 2months from poo alone.

my issue with pure foreign breeds include:
they select what they eat
some don't come on heat
higher rate of dull boars
can easily die under stress
lousy mothers.

What we need to focus on is cheap feeding, processing and Artificial insemination, my friend is currently producing a minimum of 14 piglets per litter. he once had 19 piglets but lost a lot because of crushing. now he plans on using farrowing crates.
so far farrowing crates have been the most justifiable investment on my piggery, i hardly lose a piglet in the first 7 weeks
some of our predecessors in agriculture made the mistake of over investing in nonessentials and couldn't sustain the biz when hit with challenges or need to reinvest.
@femu, I feed my camborough breeds same feed as my other breeds and their response has been fantastic as stated earlier. The most important criteria is ensuring that you have a balance ration in terms of crude protein, crude fibre and metabolic energy and essential vitMins and nutrients.

Almost all My large whites ( bought at oke aro from a farmer who had previously brought form obasanjo farms) got pregnant at first attemp.

I bought my pig nipple at a cost of N800 a piece from aliexpress. I used an agent I found on nairaland. Chrisvicmall precisely. They delivered in. 7 days. You only require 2 of nipples per pen of 10 pigs or piglets. What investment is better than that.

Here is the link to buying the nipples. They sell them in lots. In this case 5 pieces per lot.
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/5pcs-1-2-inch-1-2-SS316-stainless-steel-nipple-drinker-waterer-for-pig-drinking-small/973786415.html

On use of farrowing cage, you seem to finally agree on my initial suggestion for use of a slatted floor and manure allay which is an Integral part of a farrowing cage.

On feed, that was where I started from. can u pls Suggest a balanced feed ration that will cost N30 to N40 per kg to counter the one I previosusly suggested.

On soak away pits, a well designed soak away pit has 2 chambers, the septic tank and the soak away pit just like you have in homes. The absence of either will cause a total failure. The septic tank is designed to drain away the water. The soak away holds the semi solid manure after draining the water content through its walls. the base and if possible the sides should not be concretized so that water can sip away and leave u with the solid material which in turn is manure and can be sold to farmers.
