PoliticsMalaria kills 4000 Times The Number Of People In The Malaysia Flight Annually. by lagbaja(op): 4:29pm On Dec 30, 2014
I sympathies deeply with the families of the bereaved in the Malaysian plane crash. Beyond that, if the world can give half as much attention to the scourge of malaria in Africa than it's given to plan crashes, we would be saving several million lives much more than is lost in all plan crashes put together. Africa looses an equivalence of 4000 times the number of people that died in the malasian plane annually and it goes unmentioned.

PoliticsCurrent World Population Is Three Times The Sustainable Level by lagbaja(op): 12:44am On Dec 01, 2014
Are you wondering why there is so much unrest around the world. Don't look any further, the reason is because the earth has gone past its sustananble level. Everyone aspires to live a better life like the Americans, Chinese and Europeans, the truth is that its going to be war of nations to make that happen because the earth cannot sustain that quality of life for everyone currently living, so something has to give. Talk about survival of the fittest.

Futuristicly, Africa seem to be the only nation with enough capacity for self sustainance going by the volume of uncultivated land, unused underground water and renewable energy sources. Most of the other developed continents have cultivated their farm lands to near maximum, so if they experience population growth, they have no where else to turn.

Don't expect them to sit by and watch folding their arms. As Africans, we need to start feeding and self sustaining oursleves before the table is turned against us. Its already happening in the ebola infested nations

Here is the article to read:

Current global population of over 7 billion is already two to three times higher than the sustainable level. Several recent studies show that Earth’s resources are enough to sustain only about 2 billion people at a European standard of living.

An average European consumes far more resources than any of the poorest two billion people in the world. However, Europeans use only about half the resources of Americans, on average.

Currently, over 7 billion of us are consuming about 50% more resources than Earth is producing – during any given time period. For example, in the past twelve months we have consumed the resources that it took the planet about eighteen months to produce. We are consuming our resource base.

Obviously, this 50% overshoot is not sustainable. Another crucial point to understand is this: the longer we overshoot and consume more resources than the sustainable level, the more the long-term “sustainable level” actually declines!

One illustration of this is what’s actually been happening to fresh water aquifers all around the world. Currently over half of us are in countries where aquifers are being overpumped. As “fossil” aquifers are pumped, that water is not replaced. So when that water is depleted, pumping ends since there is no more water flowing in.

Non-fossil aquifers have a “recharge rate” – the rate at which new, fresh water flows in. As long as water is pumped out at or below the recharge rate, the aquifer will continue to supply the same amount of water year after year after year. However, these rechargeable aquifers are being overpumped.

For example, if an aquifer held a million gallons of water, and each year rainfall replenished 100,000 gallons into it, the recharge rate would be 100,000 gallons. As long as everyone collectively pumped no more than 100,000 gallons out, that would be sustainable for years to come. But very frequently people begin pumping more than the recharge rate, let’s say 110,000 gallons the first year, 130,000 gallons the next year and so on. In several more years they might pump over 200,000 gallons out. Eventually they will have pumped all of the million gallons of reserve out. At that point, the annual capacity for that aquifer would fall back to the recharge rate – 100,000 gallons a year. When aquifer reserves are depleted and fall back to the recharge rate, millions of people may suffer! Many other resources are declining in similar fashion.

To become sustainable with Earth’s resources, what are our choices? Reducing overall consumption by 50% would do it for now. Or, reducing population by 3 to 4 billion would do it. It’s more likely that a combination of both – large declines in consumption and human numbers – will be necessary.

Five Earths at American Standard
If all of the world’s 7 billion people consumed as much as an average American, it would take the resources of over five Earths to sustainably support all of them. On average, each American uses nearly 20 acres of biologically productive land and water (biocapacity) per year.

Earth’s 29.6 billion acres of biologically productive land and water could sustainably support only about 1.5 billion people at an 'American standard of living and consumption.'

At the opposite end of the spectrum are the 1.3 billion people in the world’s poorest countries. Even they are unsustainably overshooting and depleting their resource biocapacity – by over 10%!

During the past decade several researchers around the world have independently concluded that one to two billion is the sustainable number of people (at a European standard of living). Could they be wrong? Download our newsletter to read the article: “Confronting The 21st Century’s Hidden Crisis: Reducing Human Numbers by 80%”.

All of us want a viable, sustainable global home. This can be accomplished only if the wealthier of us reduce our ecological footprint to truly sustainable levels and, if all of us begin now to humanely and dramatically reduce our human numbers.

PoliticsHow Many People Can The Earth Support, 10 Billion !!!? by lagbaja(op): 12:02am On Dec 01, 2014
"The power of population is so superior to the power of the Earth to produce subsistence for man, that premature death must in some shape or other visit the human race."
The late-18th century philosopher Thomas Malthus wrote these ominous words in an essay on what he saw as the dire future of humanity. Humans' unquenchable urge to reproduce, Malthus argued, would ultimately lead us to overpopulate the planet, eat up all its resources and die in a mass famine.
But what is the maximum "power of the Earth to produce subsistence," and when will our numbers push the planet to its limit? More importantly, was Malthus' vision of the future correct?
Earth's capacity
Many scientists think Earth has a maximum carrying capacity of 9 billion to 10 billion people. [How Do You Count 7 Billion People?]
One such scientist, the eminent Harvard University sociobiologist Edward O. Wilson, bases his estimate on calculations of the Earth's available resources. As Wilson pointed out in his book "The Future of Life" (Knopf, 2002), "The constraints of the biosphere are fixed."
Aside from the limited availability of freshwater, there are indeed constraints on the amount of food that Earth can produce, just as Malthus argued more than 200 years ago. Even in the case of maximum efficiency, in which all the grains grown are dedicated to feeding humans (instead of livestock, which is an inefficient way to convert plant energy into food energy), there's still a limit to how far the available quantities can stretch. "If everyone agreed to become vegetarian, leaving little or nothing for livestock, the present 1.4 billion hectares of arable land (3.5 billion acres) would support about 10 billion people," Wilson wrote.
The 3.5 billion acres would produce approximately 2 billion tons of grains annually, he explained. That's enough to feed 10 billion vegetarians, but would only feed 2.5 billion U.S. omnivores, because so much vegetation is dedicated to livestock and poultry in the United States.
So 10 billion people is the uppermost population limit where food is concerned. Because it's extremely unlikely that everyone will agree to stop eating meat, Wilson thinks the maximum carrying capacity of the Earth based on food resources will most likely fall short of 10 billion. [When Will Earth Run Out of Food?]
According to population biologist Joel Cohen of Columbia University, other environmental factors that limit the Earth's carrying capacity are the nitrogen cycle, available quantities of phosphorus, and atmospheric carbon concentrations, but there is a great amount of uncertainty in the impact of all of these factors. "In truth, no one knows when or at what level peak population will be reached," Cohen told Life's Little Mysteries.
Slowing growth
Fortunately, we may be spared from entering the end-times phase of overpopulation and starvation envisioned by Malthus. According to the United Nations Population Division, the human population will hit 7 billion on or around Oct. 31, and, if its projections are correct, we're en route to a population of 9 billion by 2050, and 10 billion by 2100. However, somewhere on the road between those milestones, scientists think we'll make a U-turn.
UN estimates of global population trends show that families are getting smaller. "Empirical data from 230 countries since 1950 shows that the great majority have fertility declines," said Gerhard Heilig, chief of population estimates and projections section at the UN.
Globally, the fertility rate is falling to the "replacement level" — 2.1 children per woman, the rate at which children replace their parents (and make up for those who die young). If the global fertility rate does indeed reach replacement level by the end of the century, then the human population will stabilize between 9 billion and 10 billion. As far as Earth's capacity is concerned, we'll have gone about as far as we can go, but no farther.

mbulela:
Your comment seems to stem from a position of ignorance. Not every working woman enjoys being away from their children. Most do not. The economic realities makevit inevitable. Most families can't even meet up with two pay cheques. Will the children starve? Will they be home schooled? Are those needs free of charge?
Try and engage your brain a little more before you involve your fingers. It is almost impossible to keep a career without maids when you have kids. Not every woman has a mother or relative available to baby sit. It is a necessary evil.
However, i think it is one area where parents should be extremely prayerful about. Some of us have had consistently good nannies and it is not a coincidence.
Your comment makes it look like an ostrich that buries its head in sand hoping that the hunter does not see the remains of his body
Th poster is simply calling all women ( and men too) to a reality check. No amount of justification for actions will erase the reality of dangers faced by our children. Something has got to be worked out to balance the career and the safety and upbringing of the children. A reliable crèche may suffice, otherwise someone between the man and woman has got to be home.

If truly she fell from an electric pole or power line , where is the pole or power line she fell from ? (There should at least be traces of burn on the pole). Who moved her to the spot she is in the picture ?. It looks like the woman was burnt and dumped in the public place . The police should investigate how she got to the spot. The identity of the woman should be sought. If her families are traced, the motif for the burning may be found. This witch labeling can happen to just anyone, it takes just one frustrated individual who needs to find someone to blame for his failure to do the labeling. This is a cheery news for only those who don't understand the steel industry. There are dozens of Nigerian companies already producing rods and angles bars from recycled iron and billets, (sun ands sand, metafric, Phoenics et all). Ajaokuta coming out to celebrate Converting billets to rods is a shameful act. The company was designed to produce billets from iron ore for other smaller companies. They can't compete in their new found venture. This news is a political statement in preparation for 2015.

It is likely that more than 60 percent of you reading this article who live in urban areas had milk in their breakfast this morning. Milk is one of the richest sources of animal protein for humans and is contained in almost everything we love from powdered milk and cheese to ice cream and yoghurt. On a continent where cows are abundant, it remains a shocking reality that Africa currently does not produce enough milk to meet its own needs. Despite having more than 10 percent of the world’s cattle population, Africa contributes less than 3 percent to global milk production but spends more than $500 million every year on milk imports from Europe and North America, while thousands of its cattle farmers remain poor. This article explores the huge potentials of milk in Africa and two inspiring success stories of a Senegalese entrepreneur and a Nigerian milk business that are already exploiting the opportunities in milk production on the continent. I shall also reveal the 3 key ways to make money in Africa’s milk market and 5 things you must consider if you want to be successful in Africa’s milk industry.

The potential for milk in Africa is huge!
Yes, the potential for the milk business in Africa is huge and remains largely untapped. For a food product as basic and vital to the human diet as milk, the consumption and demand potential for milk in Africa remains underexploited. On a continent with over one billion people, milk consumption in Africa is currently the lowest in the world. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the average African consumes about 36kg of milk every year. This is very much below the WHO’s recommended annual consumption of 200kg of milk per person. In fact, Africa’s milk consumption compares very poorly to the global average of 103kg of milk per person per year. These figures present a favourable picture of the interesting growth potential for milk consumption in Africa.

1. Why bring the research to AFRICA ?
2. Why were the animals left to roam freely after the exit of the US research team who better understands the management of the animals ?
3. Why did they allow the workers to mingle with the animals when they fully well know they were carrying incurable infectious diseases ?
4. Why were the animals not killed after the completion of the experiments ?
5. Why didn't Betsy Brotman, the former head of the project leave when her husband was killed, were the animals more important or was the project more important?
6. Why the choice of apes for the experiments knowing how closely related they were genetically to humans and the high tendency for cross infection ?
7. Is it a coincidence that the Ebola virus emanated from the same country Liberia where the disease research facility was centered.
8. Is it a coincidence that the age of the ebola virus falls within the window of the research era ?
9. Is it a coincidence that apes were the carriers of the Ebola virus ?
