It is not absolutely true that poverty is a choice.....but then....some people have chosen to be poor buy their actions or in-actions.

I'll give two instances that i personally noticed.

1. There's this junior staff in my office.....he earns way less than i do. One day, i mentioned the name of the hair cream i use.....and he was asking why i would be using such a cheap hair cream. I was like..........what
My conclusion was that.....despite the fact that he does not earn a lot, he spends money on stuffs that i would consider unnecessary. The funny thing is that he usually asks for loans when the month is about to end.
This means he spends all his money, and hardly saves any. This sort of people usually wait for the big break that might never come. even if it does, their appetite to spend increases, and the cycle continues.

2. I know a woman that usually helps people clean their homes and she earns a reasonable sum from doing that. One day, she tells one of her clients that she's stopping the job.
Reason, her son just bought a car, and her neighbors will say.....her son just bought a car and she cleans people's homes.

In both cases, i believe the two individuals have chosen to be poor.

You have just explained a simple concept many Nigerians *(unfortunately) will never agree with or understand - Cause and Effect, Choices and Consequences - It is something we do everyday knowingly and unknowingly - yet some here prefer Fated-Conditions, Good-Luck or Divine Intervention.

It is a simple concept to understand really - You make choices everyday, just because you do not consciously make them does not mean they have not been made. If you are born into a poor family and you accept your situation as normal, you will remain poor and the cycle will continue with your children until someone has the courage to think beyond his situation and say, "Get Rich or Die Tryin"

@OP - with N1.5 Million in the "quite expensive" lands of Abuja. You will need more than positive encouragement and will-power.
1: Honestly make an assessment of your present monthly spend and get rid of all the expenses you can live without. even if it is cheap.
2: Get one thing straight! Abuja is tougher than Lagos when you are a 1-man business with a wife and 2 kids - it is a Dog-Eat-Dog world out there. Temper your ideas with caution and calculate your options tightly - N1.5 can easily disappear together with an ill-planned business idea. Forex, Online Bu@#shit, Google etc
3: ICAN and Marketing in the Banking sector is not even the standard anymore when people are struggling to keep a job with their MBAs,ACCAs and CFAs (there are just too many out there with paper-degrees and experience). do not attempt to use all your N1.5M for paper-degrees. it is tempting but it is only a 50-50 chance.
4: At these times you need a great deal of Emotional and Intellectual Support - If Religion is your gig, Pray and find support from your Church - They can be helpful when they are not taking from you - some have programs to uplift the plight of their members with small business opportunities that could lead to greater ones.
5: Know your true friends (this is when most run-away or try to finish you off by selling stupid business ideas)If you find that you have no friends - be very happy because friends are quite expensive to keep. You will now have the opportunity to make new friends from a position of Humility, Respect and Honesty (True Friends)
6: Your Wife and Kids will put a lot of stress on you - Marriage with stretched Finances always do - Make sure to tame your frustrations/anger away from your family. it helps a whole lot.
7: Do not be ashamed of your situation - Many have been there (many are still there) but the Purposed and Resilient have testimonies to tell - I know cos I have been at the Top and fallen to the very bottom for at least 4 years without a Job. I am grateful for the experience and the most important lesson you will learn from your situation is that the World only Smiles to those who seize opportunity with both hands or make one for themselves. logicboy: Poverty is not a choice. There are some situations in which a poor person will remain poor unless by some intervention of the goverment or a rich person or charity. There are poor children in the village that dont get education past primary school because of their poor parents- how are they ever going to be rich without external help?

What about manual factory workers who lose their arms or legs in factory accident. Is it really going to be easy for a handicapped person to be rich in Nigeria if he is already poor?

It would seem that Fate has dealt the wrong cards to most people who have found themselves in a "Poor" Environment but no Man is Bound by the situation he is born into. That is why we are Top of the Food Chain. *Reading your response, l gather you feel(no you think) you'll be able to do a good job. if given a Survey work to do.(I simply refer such a person to my father he handle clientele)
Moreso that you feel( I have them at my disposal not feel) that you have "Qualified Surveyors" at your disposal, who can "verify and validate" whatever you do for a client( I don't do survey jobs for clients)
