Aide to Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, Prince Victor Idemudia, chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the state, Emmanuel Igiebor, were among the over 2,000 ACN members that joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state at the weekend.

The ACN members, who defected at a rally held at the state secretariat of the PDP in Benin City, were from Orhionmwon and Ovia South-West local government areas of the state.

Igiebor, originally a PDP member before he left to join the ACN, returned to the PDP with his supporters.

On his part, Prince Idemudia, who was a member of the Committee on Protection of Government Property in Governor Oshiomhole's administration, said his decision to dump Oshiomhole's administration and

the ACN was occasioned by lack of visionary leadership of the administration.

Thousands of Ijaws in Edo State also defected from ACN to PDP, on Sunday. The spokesperson for the Ijaws, Timi Robert, said they joined the PDP because of President Goodluck Jonathan, who is their kinsman and leader of the PDP.

He assured that all Ijaws people in Edo State would work to ensure victory for General Airhiavbere and the PDP.

The Director General of the Edo PDP Governorship Campaign, Senator Odion Ugbesia, who received the defectors, assured that they would not be any discrimination against them, saying they would be given all the support they needed to ensure that they worked for the party to win the 14 July 2012 governorship election in the state.

The Edo PDP governorship candidate, General Charles Airhiavbere (rtd) while thanking them for believing in him, reassured that he would "restore those things that have eluded the state in the past."

The duo were arraigned alongside their company, Command Clem Nigeria Limited, on a 32-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretence but both pleaded not guilty to the offences when the charges were read to them.

Consequently, their counsel, Jeese Daniels Onuigbo, applied for his clients’ bail, asking the court to take into consideration the constitutional rights of the defendants based on presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

“My lord, with this application, we are relying on the provisions of Section 35 (1) and Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. And also we base it on the jurisdiction of this court. We urge the court to grant our prayers by granting the accused bail. We also pray that the conditions will be on the most liberal term,” he said.

In reply to the application, Ben Ubi, counsel for the EFCC, told the court that he was only handed the application for bail by the defence counsel in court, but would not oppose the application, as bail was solely at the discretion of the court.

He, however, urged the court to impose conditions that would ensure the defendants were present in court for trial throughout.

“Although I was served the bail application this morning in court, I managed to read through it, and in the interest of justice, I will want the court to use its power of jurisdiction, but I pray the court to attach conditions that will ensure that the accused are present for trial,” he said.
