Read the full news and not headlines:

VP discusses this as a potential, the headline gives it a totally different slant! He is not stating a fait accompli. He is evincing a possibility.

=============================================
Headline:
It’s becoming clearer that Nigeria is the food basket of the world, says Osinbajo

Speaking at the Nigerian-German Investment Dialogue in Berlin, Germany, Osinbajo said Nigeria is a leading investment destination for potential and serious investors.

“Consumer spending in Africa was $1.4 trillion by 2015, with Nigeria, Egypt and South Africa accounting for more than half of that total,” Osinbajo said.

“There are also increasing economic opportunities in Nigeria because of deliberate actions by our government to diversify the economy and improve the business environment.

“It is encouraging that there are significant economic ties between Nigeria and Germany. Germany is a significant exporter to Nigeria, which is its second largest trading partner in Africa.

“Recent reports show that German investment in Nigeria contributes as much as $1 billion in turnover annually. This is good, but we must agree that there is scope for even deeper collaboration given that Nigeria’s GDP is close to $500bn.”

The professor of law said agriculture perhaps presents one of the best investment opportunities in Nigeria, stating that only three years ago the country was importing $5 million worth of rice daily.

“Today we produce locally 10 million metric tonnes of paddy rice annually. And we are importing only two percent of our rice consumption now,” Osinbajo said.

“Investments in milling capacity has risen astronomically since then, with one investor putting a million tonnes of milling capacity into the market.

“Carlos Farms, a Mexican fruit and vegetable investor, had initially planned to grow bananas and pineapples for export until he discovered that he was making more money selling his bananas locally at $3 dollars a kilogramme, for what he would have been paid only a dollar per kg in Europe.

“With a substantial percentage of the world’s arable land and over half of that uncultivated, it is becoming clearer that the world will be looking to Africa, and Nigeria in particular, as its food basket.

“Just to take China’s demand alone, China has 27% of the world’s population, but only 7% of the world’s arable land for agriculture. China needs 2 million tonnes of hybrid Soya beans per annum for livestock feed and vegetable oil. But we have not met that demand.”

Politics / Atiku, Gusau And The Auction In Port Harcourt, By Shuaib I. Shuaib by Larufa(m): 2:14pm On Nov 07, 2018
Sokoto governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal was poised to give former Vice President Atiku Abubakar a run for his money in the recently concluded convention for the presidential ticket of the PDP. The build-up to the event was in so many ways, a show of force by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors.

But they were in for a surprise as a more clandestine political force was about to show its hand. It was clear to everyone that the candidates to watch were Atiku, Tambuwal and Senate President Bukola Saraki. Early in the primary, based on the atmosphere and chitchat between delegates, Tambuwal looked the favourite to clinch the party’s ticket.

But the moment General Ibrahim Babangida’s surrogate appeared at the convention ground, everything changed.

There were about 3,000 delegates at the convention. According to a report in PUNCH delegates were induced with cash, and some of the delegates walked away with as much as $9,000 each. The report described a process that was in appearance free and credible but in actual fact compromised with money.

It was more of an auction for the party’s ticket, with bidding starting at $2,500, moving up to $4,000 and finally settling at $5,000. The aspirants at the convention very easily spent millions of dollars on the delegates alone.

Of course, nobody was left out of the bonanza, including some journalists who monitored the event. That is why there has been no real outrage on the corrupting influence of money in determining who gets to rule us.

This act of monetising the democratic process, making the foot soldiers happy with pay offs goes to the heart of the PDP’s philosophy on what power is for, whether they will run a government for the people or for a few. But it has always been the way of the PDP and the convention was designed to serve the interest of the highest bidder.

foraminifera

The irony in all of this is that the 2010 Electoral Act actually sets a limit of N1 billion on election campaign spending. It givesthe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) powers to monitor election campaign contributions by individuals and groups, while also giving it powers to punish political parties that are in breach of the law.

There is no doubt that what happened in Port Harcourt was in total disregard of the rules and guidelines protecting the people and electoral process from the influence and manipulation of the rich and powerful. The party itself makes no pretences or attempts to operate within the guidelines of law or that of INEC. If anything, it flaunts the willingness to spend freely.

At the party primary, Tambuwal, a former speaker of the House of Representatives had home advantage in the sense that the convention was being held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. And Rivers governor, Nyesom Wike was on his side. True to expectations, Tambuwal was reported to have started off well in early voting at the convention.

But then there was a sudden change in the voting pattern and his political fortunes. And it was the appearance of General Aliyu Gusau, a former chief of army staff and national security adviser that brought that sudden change. After that, Atiku practically coasted to victory.

Wike did mobilise for Tambuwal. Bukola Saraki was also reported to have spent heavily and even came third in the race. But against the combined forces of the “unhappy generals”, they all didn’t stand a chance. It is no longer secret that these men of power mobilised for Atiku at the convention.

Money has always been their weapon of choice in controlling the lives of lesser men. Olusegun Adeniyi, a columnist with ThisDay newspaper and former presidential spokesman wrote after the convention, how he was with General Babangida at his Minna home while the convention was going on in Port Harcourt.

The former military president, Adeniyi wrote, was getting constant updates of events at the convention ground and had also predicted the outcome of the exercise. This is very instructive, not only in shedding light about IBB’s insight into political events, but also how much he knew about the people and resources at the disposal of each candidate and his own role in the entire process.

Obasanjo has made a show of his reconciliation with Atiku, going as far as bringing known critics of the president, Sheik Ahmad Gumi and Bishop Hassan Kukah to be part of the show. But questions being asked now is whether that wasn’t the only event that was staged for public consumption.

Atiku’s acceptance speech at the convention ground highlighting the role Obasanjo played in his political rise is now rumored to also be the handiwork of the former president. So much has happened between them and in spite of the known enmity between them over the years, there is still a lot they are hiding from Nigerians.

Whether they met and planned the speech to open a window for a public reconciliation will just be one more political plot in the line of many they have hatched against each other and the Nigerian people.

To understand how the PDP has gone full circle to present Atiku Abubakar as its best chance of winning the presidency, it is the beginning we need to go back to. The beginning here is the start of PDP’s journey as an opposition party which takes us to 2015 and the aftermath of it devastating defeat at the ballot box.

At every stage since then, and at every opportunity, PDP’s response to every challenge has been to sell its platform to the highest bidder. First it was Ali Modu Sheriff, who dragged the party through hell and then it was sold to Wike but the crown ultimately has to go Atiku Abubakar who has paid the most for an opportunity to fly the PDP flag at the next presidential election.

And to make sense of Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida’s new found love for Atiku, what their interest is, it is the origins of the party we need to return to and what its promoters believe to be the primary purpose of governance and exercising political power.

A lot has been said about the politics of PDP in its 16-year rule. What is hardly talked about is its philosophy and objectives in exercising political power. Since 1999, regardless of who is president, the party has governed first to serve and protect the interest of society’s most powerful. Every major policy of the party while in government has been towards this objective.

There may be four or five of these individuals and through their proxies, they are the biggest shareholders in the banking industry, they own the telecommunications companies, the electricity distribution companies, the oil companies and major construction companies.

Now, why won’t they think they own Nigeria or that democracy is on the market? Yes, the money trickles down to many more people but a larger share of the population remains forever trapped in poverty.

In any other country, they would make up the deep state. It is not that they have lost ownership of these investments. What has happened under President Muhammadu is their ability to protect their asset and political interest is gradually eroding. And that fear of the loss of influence and privileges best describes what the PDP, the Atiku candidacy means to them, and what it means for the rest us.

Politics / Bode George To Fashola: You Should Be Concerned About Fixing Roads, Not 2023 by Larufa(m): 3:24pm On Oct 27, 2018
Bode George, chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says Babatunde Fashola, minister of power, works & housing, should leave the issue of who becomes president in 2023 and focus on fixing roads.

George, a one-time military administrator of Ondo state, gave the advice while speaking to journalists in Lagos.

He was reacting to Fashola’s statement that a vote for President Muhammadu Buhari by the south-west would guarantee the zone the presidency in 2023.

George said: “Fashola is the Minister of Works. Look at the key major roads from the ports, they are in deplorable state and these roads are the gateway to the nation’s economy.

“It costs a container to be moved from Apapa ports to Tin- Can to Ikeja N1 million. Just one container and that is what it will cost the same container from Shanghai in China to Lagos.

“So the minister needs to fix those roads now instead of postulating about 2023. These roads have not been maintained for years.

“If goods cannot come out fast from the ports, it will affect those who are buying and selling and if things cannot go into the ports for export, how would people make money.

“Fashola should be concerned about fixing these roads before May 2019 because he would come back someday to give account to the people.”

Politics / No Freeze Order Placed on Adeleke/Davidos Accounts-says EFCC by Larufa(m): 7:44pm On Sep 16, 2018
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied freezing the bank account of Ademola Adeleke, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Osun.

The anti-graft agency also said it did not place a freeze order on the accounts of members of his family, including popular musician, Davido.

The PDP on Saturday alleged that the accounts of Adeleke family members had been frozen, describing it as “a recipe for crisis in Osun”.

Wilson Uwujaren, spokesman of the commission, in a statement on Sunday, said the allegation is false.

“The commission calls on members the public to disregard the report, which is patently false and contrived to dress the agency with a partisan garb in the unfolding political contest in Osun State,” NAN quoted him as saying.

“For the avoidance of doubt, at no time did the EFCC place a freeze order on any account belonging to members of the Adeleke family.

“The EFCC frowns at the seeming attempts by faceless forces to drag it into the political fray.”

Presidential election usually has the highest voters turnout. 2019 will witness unprecedented new/first time voters most largely driven by the disastrous showing of buhari and the need to vote him out.

The choice is very personal to Nigerians thus: is your life better today than a few years past? The answer to most Nigerians is capital NO!!!!

The resolve to vote out buhari is very real and turning into a movement!

Our democracy is deepening. GeJ/PDP lost with all the federal might and that feat by the nigerian people will be repeated on February 16th 2019!

You are not getting my points, you are just repeating the same thing that PBM will be voted out.

Please provide your predictions for the zones and back them up with reasons real or otherwise.

Where is the better candidate to turn the table against PMB in 2019.

A candidate with political structures and national or even sectional devotees like Buhari in NE/NW.

2019 elections will not be free and fair but wuruwuru to the answer for APC.

Wrong!

Buhari will be defeated hands down! How has June 12 recognition provided jobs or affect the price of rice?
Buhari will be defeated in the NC by pDP irrespective of what the caandiate say or not.NC has always been PDP, it is the party of the minorities in nigeria.
SS and SE will vote massively more than 2015 for PDP while NW and NE won't suppressed PDP's votes like 2015 as the battle is of likes!

Please can you provide realistic political reasons.

The last governorship elections in Anambra and Bayelsa are indicators for lower turnouts.

Anambra: Presidential 703,409 vs Gubernatorial 442,242
Bayelsa: Presidential 371, 739 vs Gubernatorial 241,850

Remember votes relate more to governorship elections than the presidential.

All what PMB/APC will need to do in the NC, SS and SE is to play defensive election tactics, no allocation of votes, number of votes counted will be the one declared.

In the NE, NW and SW, PMB/APC, will manipulate votes to maximum.

it will neither be free nor fair but that is the way it is in Naija politics.

PMB/APC controls the security forces and the INEC, which they will use to their advantage,

unlike during the 2015 elections the voting pattern is not clearly against the incumbent.

I am starting by stating that I am supporting PMB until there is a better candidate.

Using last 2015 election results to forecast the next is faulty, the political situation is different now.

The total number of votes from SS and SE are artificial, the votes are allocated not really voting.

A similar scenario will play out in NE and NW in 2019, ridiculous votes for Buhari.

SW will still vote Buhari with close to 65%, June 12 effects, Tinubu and his boys having a free day with voters buying and intimidation.

In NC, Buhari will still win with 55%, remember all the main and serious PDP candidates (Atiku, Lamido, Turaki) are Fulanis and they have never condemned the alleged "criminal activities" of the herdsmen and APC Government controls the security forces and INEC.

In SS/SE, Buhari will lose but the total number of votes will be less.
