That’s as absurd as it gets. Oh no, you obviously didn't read through all my posts on this thread. I am merely making Nigerians aware of the fact, that there are viable alternatives to studying in the UK, which exist elsewhere. Show everyone in black and white, where I advised them to violate UK visa rules. Go on...stop lying, and provide proof! tobiasbeecher: Why are you contradicting yourself? What is the essence of this thread? Isn't to make information available to people to read and make an informed decision? Why then are you and some people here against the OP? Please, we need this kind of information in the public space so that people will have enough information. It is shocking that people are making snide comments about the OP. You are saying the truth, let us hope he would catch your drift. In fact, another one of the defenders of the British universe almost went ballistic, when I advised the UK govt to compel UK institutions to highlight the UK visa policy clearly on their admission website, so that Nigerian students would not make the error of applying to UK schools, when other alternatives exist! Business › Re: Alakija Dragged On Twitter After Saying She Accepted Her oil well by "Faith" by LaudableXX: 2:18pm On Feb 27, 2018 |
hedonistic: If you get an oil block, even if you don't do anything else but merely decide to invite oil majors to partake in it, you should get at least $15m to $30m in so-called 'farming fees, regardless of whether they later find oil or not. If you want to flip it altogether, you would get at least between $30m - $100m depending on its perceived prospects. If they find oil, you would still receive annual royalties (in millions of dollars). Isn't that enough to make you very rich?
Because the likes of Alakija, Adenuga, and Lulu-Briggs decided that they wanted more than farming fees and royalties, and went the extra mile to invite technical partners to do all the work for them, while they sit back and share in the proceeds, that doesn't mean that they're smart or hardworking.
The whole oil block award and operation process in Nigeria is riddled with extreme corruption, and anybody that made their wealth through this can never be a genuine entrepreneurship role model. When Mobil, Shell, Agip and the oil majors got awarded oil blocks, are you saying the process was not riddled with corruption? Under what guidelines or bidding processes were they awarded these blocks, from the 60s to the 90s? Please tell us. Some of you guys, feel comfortable when foreigners drill your national oil assets, but start crying 'blue murder,' when a Nigerian is given a permit to drill for the same oil! Are you aware that there are several individuals that were awarded oil blocks within marginal fields from year 1991 till 2003 but were never able to get oil majors or any exploration firm to partner with them, until the licenses of those oil blocks expired? Why? Simply because from the seismic reports, not all those oil blocks could boast of oil in commercial quantity. So the owners of those oil blocks NEVER earned a penny from it. If truly the likes of Alakija were just awarded oil blocks without them paying for it, then when their case got to court such an issue would have been exposed. But the case went all the way to the Supreme Court and from the evidence tendered, it was obvious that the Alakija's company Famfa paid in full for the rights to that oil block, and the court ended up preventing Obasanjo's govt from revoking their license to it. Getting an oil block is one thing, but being able to bring together those with the expertise, equipment and resources to make it a profitable operation, takes a lot of guts, negotiation and persistence. One needs to give Alakija a pass mark at least, in this area! If you look back, many of those oil blocks fell within marginal fields that had been in the custody of oil majors for many years, but which they had not bothered to operate, because they felt the returns would not be worth their while or the block would not yield oil in commercial quantity. But since those blocks were awarded to Nigerians, it has shown the rest of the world that our citizens also have the expertise to develop, operate and coordinate exploration activities successfully. The likes of companies like Dubri Oil, Emerald Energy, Amni International, Niger-Delta Exploration and Production Co (which has installed the first mini-refinery/topping plant producing diesel for sale), Waltersmith Petromann and a few others have lent credence to that fact. Oil acreage ownership in Nigeria does not have ethnic colouration. What’s more important, sustaining production from oil and gas assets, whether or not awarded by the state, is determined by how much of a businessman you are.
When Jibril Aminu handed out oil prospecting blocks, in the first comprehensive effort “to encourage indigenous participation” in 1991, he gave blocks to companies owned by Folawiyo, Abiola, Adenuga, Udoji, Ibru, Igbinedion,(all Southerners) as much as he gave to enterprises set up by people like Saleh Jumbo and Mai Deribe.
Between 1991 and 1993, we suddenly had over 25 companies, that were Nigerian E&P companies and they took themselves so seriously that they set up an association they christened “Nigerian Association of Indigenous Petroleum Exploration Companies”. But what did these people do with the acreages? They were mostly clueless about how to progress things.
Out of that class of awardees, only Mike Adenuga created what you could really call an E&P company. He is the only one producing oil today, from his own block.
It’s bad enough that Nigerian indigenous private acreage holders don’t produce, as a collective, up to 150,000 Barrels per day, or 7% of the national daily production, so why are we fighting ourselves? But false information misleads all of us into false conclusions, which reduce the complexity of the solutions we ought to be proffering.
The first field the author mentions is Obe field, which, he rightly claims, is held by Cavendish Petroleum, a company set up by Alhaji Mai Deribe. Alabo- George lied by saying that the Obe field, the main hydrocarbon pool in OML 110, contains 500Million barrels of oil reserves.
The Obe field does not have a proven 20 Million barrels. I am not sure it has 10Million barrels. It is not producing as I write. The Obe field has not produced for five years, since 2007, when Tranfigura, the last technical partner engaged by Cavendish, walked out.
I don’t know what discipline Mr Alabo-George belongs to, but this point I am about to make is well known to every junior petroleum geologist with three year experience in the crummiest E&P company: If a field holds 500 Million barrels of oil, proven, in shallow water Nigeria, it won’t lie fallow. Investors would rush it.
And I am less keen on how much you’re getting as rent from the asset you are holding, than the capacity you are building as manager of a Nigerian oil company who is awarded the asset, in trust for the rest of us.
True, Indimi’s Oriental Resources holds the three assets. OML 115 is not producing as I write. No one has certified that there’s a producible field in the acreage. Ebok is being produced, on Oriental Resources’ behalf, by Afren, a UK listed company. Last year, the field delivered an average of 8,000Barrels of Oil per Day(BOPD), according to Afren’s website. You can google it. Okwok, as I write, is still in development. Translation: it has produced nary a drop of oil.

ItsMeAboki: I really don't know whether you and that Charliebiz are the same persons hiding under different monikers or different individuals suffering from the same affliction of intellectual laziness/poor comprehension.
In any case, may I also refer you to the 2nd paragraph of my earlier post where I clearly and specifically included airports as restricted areas where grazing is prohibited.
Lastly, your regional origins is of no interest to me; nor does it take away from the fact that southerners continue to take delight in maligning northerners as educationally backwards while many of them are ironically half baked or at best educated illiterates.
Shey you understand? Who is Charliebiz? I really do not know. But please do not transfer any aggression you have towards him, in my direction. My regional origins are not the topic under discussion. It is the cows straying unto the runway, that is the subject of this thread. Kindly stick to it. And southerners are not your problem either, but the misguided way those who are responsible for taking care of Northern interests and its people, have failed woefully to do so. So stop attacking those from the south, for the failure of Northern leaders. A number of educated Northern leaders have also pointed out the problems of the North. Why didn't you call them Southerners for doing so? If truly the herdsmen knew that airports were restricted areas, what were they doing leading cows to graze in such areas? From Katsina, to Kano to Yobe to Bauchi, Sokoto etc, do you deny that a lot of northerners have been deprived of education, access to quality healthcare and development as well as an improvement in their living conditions, despite the millions allocated to various states in that region? So why are you getting upset, with those who have pointed out these shortcomings? It doesn't matter if they are Northerners or Southerners that point out the problems - the fact remains, that these problems need to be solved!! |

UK schools exist to make as much money from the clueless, if I were in their shoes, I’d do the same too. It is not their responsibility to teach you how to think. (sigh) This matter is really causing you pain! So UK schools should engage in subtle 419 to collect fees from naive, unsuspecting international students??! Wow! I never looked at it from that angle before....it could explain why the UK govt has not insisted that such schools should put up a large disclaimer on their website and in their brochures, repeating that international students cannot work in the UK after acquiring such pricey degrees from their institutions. It would nip everything in the bud. International students will save their money. UK govt will have less breaches of their immigration rules. And the UK universities would lose a substantial amount of funds, that would have come in from the unsuspecting international students. I love it! |

TWoods: We are having a silly back and forth. The government makes the laws... it really doesn’t matter a jot what a school tells you. It is your responsibility to know what the law says. Airlines fly you to the US daily and Disney wants your money too, regardless of what they say, it is your responsibility to know that you cannot simply choose to live in Florida forever on a visiting visa.
That is just plain facts... feel free twisting yourself into a pretzel in order to blame everyone but yourself for your own poor planning.
Besides, anyone who spends millions to obtain a masters in the UK gets no sympathy from me. You could have obtained the same degree for far less in the US or Canada... again it boils down to proper planning. I’ve spent enough time on these boards to realize that this is the fundamental problem of most Nigerians. We are basically lazy and shortsighted, preferring to rely on “favor” and “prayer” rather than a clear set of facts and logic. Sir, you are the one turning yourself into an aggrieved contortionist in your bid to defend the UK govt policies, mindlessly. All the rest of us are doing, is to ensure that the same policy is laid bare in clear terms, to those who want to come and study in the UK. It needs to be repeated with real-life examples, so that those who are about to take this step, can realise that better alternatives exist in other countries, and vote accordingly for what suits them. So why are you still wailing? Any Nigerian student who still votes to study in the UK, after reading through this entire thread and seeing the opportunities elsewhere, needs to see a shrink.

TWoods: So basically the problem isn’t the UK government. It is our own misplaced sense of entitlement. Anyone with half a brain would know that the government (not the school) makes immigration rules. Try not to expose your misguided brand of clueless logic on this board. The UK govt says one thing on its' website, while the UK school says another thing on their website, and fosters a different impression through several exchanges of e-mails spanning several months, with the student. Which one will the student most likely believe, especially since they have forged stronger ties with staff and representatives of the school handling their enquiries over several weeks? The student is often left with the impression that the info on the UK govt website is a generalised one. All you need to do, since you are so aggrieved on the UK govt's behalf, is tell them to ensure that all universities admitting foreign/international students include a disclaimer on their website in bold letters, which states loud and clear that they are not allowed to work in the UK, after their pricey degrees. So that such students can ignore the hyped testimonials, about how many students get a job after parting with huge amounts of cash, for their pricey degrees. |

They all mingled and still mingling with governments. They excel on governments goodwill.
Why do you think Dangote was with Jonathan before election results were announced and few hours after Buhari was announced winner, he left Jonathan and went to sit with Buhari. Why has it been difficult for the US to pass any serious bill on gun control.
Whenever any government in US organizes bigtime election fund raisers what kind of people show up at these funds raisers? It's the likes of the ones you've mentioned above. Some them don't get oil wells or contracts from government, but go and check government policies as regards these people's businesses, for example Dangote and cement manufacturing in Nigeria. Icon4s: I am glad you have an idea of where I am coming from.
But let me clear this, no government gave anybody any Oil Block as a gift!
Do you know why they are regarded as a gift? Because of the cost of acquiring those blocks as compared to the huge revenues later recovered from them. This thing you guy think are gifts were worth hundreds of millions in Dollars.
Prio to the discovery of huge fields like Agbami, Bonga and Erha, the deep offshore were no go areas. No business man would want to invest his money where they knew there were several limitations ranging from lack of available detailed Geological data to Lack of technical expertise and experience among others.
The government had to give out those offshore blocks to potential investors at a cheaper price compared to those onshore as an incentive to attract them towards it and then which in turn will boost our Oil reserves. Which is a win-win scenario.
Let's even say (as you guys think) she was given the block for free. Do you know the amount of Capital investment (CAPEX) that will go into such a block before you will get to the stage of Drilling the first well? What if after spending so much and then drill wells and the wells are dry? And you say she has nothing to lose? Do you know how much it costs to even drill wells offshore?
Please if we don't know about certain issues let's ask questions before making comments

This was after subsequent seismic studies, drilling etc., embarked upon by Alakija's firm and their operators, now revealed that the oil field was actually more profitable because it had higher yields, than everyone had originally thought! Aphrodite007: Are you in Abuja? Let me take you out for a drink.
This is what I've been saying! If them born them well, let them include the caveat on the website that just 1% of international students work, lets see who will dash them money to cater to their citizens! I'm just tired of the senseless arguments gan!
You know the worst part for me? These defenders are people that I respect and used to follow gullibly but now that I see that I'm wiser than them on nairaland, I would start doubting everything they say! Just Imagine if I hadn't experienced this thing first hand, I would have out-rightly believed them, chai! mumu no good sha! Babe, I dey Lagos, o! But I am familiar with a lot of these issues. I am doing some work for a client now, in the oil & gas sector. We were initially thinking of running training courses for their staff at a UK institution, but with recent developments, we have discovered that the same courses are being offered at a top university in South Africa. We switched the courses to the SA school. Less stress and far less cost involved! |

lalasticlala: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lola_Shoneyin Lola Shoneyin is the wife of Olaokun Soyinka, former Commissioner for Health in Ogun State, and Wole Soyinka's first son. So she is Soyinka's daughter-in-law. It appears that the muse does run in the family. Happy birthday to Lola, the wordsmith. INTERVIEW: Being Married to a Soyinka is Great, But I Have My Own Identity – Lola Shoneyin
https://dawntodusknews.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/soyinkas.jpg
SU: Was it a deliberate decision not to use the Soyinka name, given that you are married to Professor Wole Soyinka’s son, or is it that you didn’t want to be seen in the shadow of the great man?
LOLA SHONEYIN: Well, most significantly, I think changing your name confuses the reading public, if you’re an author. In any case, why should female authors have to change their names, because their circumstances change? I find it absurd. My life has been so much simpler because I chose to stick with my original name.
SU: But in your own case, being a writer and married to a Soyinka…
LOLA SHONEYIN: It works for some, like the three generations of Desai, and then you have the Theroux where both father and son are authors. I don’t know how changing my name to ‘Lola Soyinka’ would have worked for me in this terrain. The Soyinka name and everything it stands for was pretty much established, before I was born. I like that I have my own identity, my own voice, my own name. The other thing is this: using and keeping my dad’s name is a tribute to him. He has contributed so much to writing my career by pushing and encouraging me.
SU: But has marrying into the Soyinka clan conferred any privileges on you as a writer?
LOLA SHONEYIN: None at all. I heard about a conversation that took place in Northern Nigeria a few months ago. Apparently, a lady was saying really pleasant things about The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives until someone answered, ‘What do you expect, is she not Soyinka’s daughter-in-law?’ This made me laugh, because Professor Soyinka didn’t even see the novel in manuscript form. I sent him the finished product – the book (because) I wanted to surprise him. I knew that he would be even more proud of me if he knew I had done it on my own. I didn’t get a leg-up. I worked my ass off! (laughs). I found an agent, got my manuscript organised, sent it out, and somehow got through all those rejections. My partner has been great though. I can’t give him enough credit for being my first editor.

SU: Let’s talk about The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives. It has been translated into several languages and is one of the international bestsellers from this part of the globe. It’s also a very personal account of polygamy, yet you’re not from a polygamous home. How did you find the inspiration to write that?
LOLA SHONEYIN: I might not be from a polygamous home, but I definitely have a polygamous background. Both my grandfathers were polygamists. They had several wives, especially my maternal grandfather. He was an Oba, the Alaperu of Iperu, and he had five wives. I grew up hearing a lot of stories.
It is difficult to grow up in Nigeria and not encounter people who are coping with polygamy: kids dealing with being treated like second-class citizens because they were the children of subsequent wives, or sometimes the children of the first wife, dealing with that sense of entitlement that comes with that position. When two people enter into a marriage contract, the expectations are the same on both sides. The man doesn’t feel the woman will go off, marry another man and have more husbands. That is exactly how women feel.
And I’ve found that whether it’s Christian, Muslim, you come from a polygamous or monogamous home, whether you’re traditional, from the rural areas or the city, no woman goes into a marriage believing that she wouldn’t be enough for her husband. When a man takes on another wife, the message is simple: you’re inadequate. As expected, this can really damage a woman’s self-esteem. Everything else that comes after is part of a coping mechanism.
The way women change, is of interest to me as well, how a polygamous setting can change a woman’s personality, make them mercenary and defensive to the point of aggression. But also, I’d been reading The Lion and the Jewel, Professor Wole Soyinka’s play. Baroka disgusted me. He knew he could have any woman. He believed very much in his loins, his magic member. For him, having sex with women was like taming them. I really wanted to explore this and interrogate it.
SU: Your poetry is very personal. You’re never afraid to literally bare yourself naked. Is that a deliberate ploy?
LOLA SHONEYIN: It’s personal, but not personal in the way that people think it is. I always say that if there is one gift that Providence has bestowed on me, it’s the gift of empathy. If you ring me up and tell me your story, from that moment, I am living in your shoes; I am you. I know what you’re going through. It’s like being a method actor. That’s the way I see it.
So, sometimes when I’m writing, especially in first person, it’s the poet persona. I can see how easy it is very easy for people to assume it is me.
And I write about all sorts, infidelity, religion, my grandparents and their beliefs, sexual molestation and stuff like that, and these are all not necessarily my own personal experiences. Obviously, some are more personal than others. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/entertainment/126696-interview-being-married-to-a-soyinka-is-great-but-i-have-my-own-identity-lola-shoneyin.html 4 Likes |

Aphrodite007: I studied IT love, and I had a powerful CV when applying, still i didn't get in because I needed sponsorship. I had two doctors as friends and they couldn't get in too. I had uncountable number of nurses as friends and only one got in. Engineering is the worst, UK citizens work as contractors in the engineering field, so if you are not an experienced top level engineering executive (probably with a PMP), you are wasting your time. So doing a degree in IT, Med and Engineering, will not guarantee a job until they realise there are no more EU people in the UK and then start smiling at us.
Those two defenders were conversant with the rules in the yester-years, we have been in the system between 2014 and 2017 and are testifying. if they don't want to upgrade their knowledge, that's fine- its completely their business. Thanks for this info, jare. It is priceless. Like I said earlier, I have circulated this thread to everyone I know, who is thinking of going abroad for higher studies. After reading this, I am sure many of them would give the UK a wide berth, and vote to go elsewhere. And I do not blame them. I would do the same, too! |

TWoods: This is silly dribble. Again let me explain - you are expressly told when applying for a visa, that it is temporary and that there are conditions attached to that visa. Anyone who can read can peruse the UK government websites where these conditions are spelled out in detail. To say that this thread is "meant to inform and educate" people who have already obtained a visa is basically an indictment on their own poor planning. I have never seen a situation where obtaining a student visa and paying millions for a masters degree automatically entitled you to a job and/or permanent residence in that country. They usually find out on the website, and are told when applying for a visa, during the 10-20 minute interview at the high commission. Meanwhile most of the schools they applied to, (during the very lengthy application/admission process which could span several weeks of e-mail exchanges and phone conversations), never mention it and even give the impression, that students who graduate from their institutions find it easy to get jobs, or that many of them have become gainfully employed ever since they got pricey degrees from such institutions. Are the UK schools and UK govt in the business of confusing prospective students? That is why I said that all UK schools should include a caveat in their prospectus/brochures, that international students would NOT be allowed to work in the UK, except for a few who have studied any of the STEM courses, and have a sponsor to back their application. There should be a clear section on immigration policies, in their brochures. Once that is done, prospective students would be able to compare the cost of such degrees with existing UK policies, and would be able to make better informed decisions, by going elsewhere other then the UK, to study! Now, is that too difficult for you to understand, or must I break it down into mono syllables before it gets into your head? |

ItsMeAboki: I often come across bigotry and insults from southerners here in NLand concerning how educationally backwards we in the north are; yet it is ironically becoming increasingly apparent that a lot of the so called educated are either intellectually lazy or lack basic comprehension - much in the same way as you have just displayed.
My friend go back to my post and read very carefully, this time even more slowly, especially the first and second paragraphs - I am sure by then you would appreciate that your analogy had already been addressed before hand.
For the sake of clarity; anyone standing in the middle of the highway in a manner that could potentially cause fatal accident, is already breaking the law by obstructing traffic and could furthermore be charged for endangering other ppl's lives.
I really don't understand why some ppl cannot understand such very clear simple worded written English. In the same way, those cows were loitering around the airport runway, in a manner that could cause an obstruction to aircraft coming in to land, which could potentially cause a fatal accident. Hope that makes sense.... Last word: not everyone that disagrees with you is a southerner/ Some northerners are more educated than others and spot danger a mile ahead, which is why they would not buy into some archaic unfounded views held by their fellow citizens. Cows have absolutely NO business straying into a runway, or rambling around on a highway. |

justwise: Distress and irritated? What loads of porkies! Direct that dribbles to people who invested millions and still jobless because they failed to do their home work before coming here to study And now that those who didn't do their homework properly have learnt their lessons, and are sharing the benefit of those lessons learnt with others, by advising them to think twice before coming to the UK for higher education, especially when such education can be obtained relatively cheaper elsewhere abroad, why are you still complaining??! |

dangermouse: Anti grazing laws or not, these herdsmen should be arrested for acts capable of causing loss of human lives and properties by blocking runways with their cows. Exactly! They should also be arrested for wilfully trespassing upon govt property. Or is the airport runway a part of their grazing routes? |
