An inferiority complex is when you feel the need to make the teaching of your language in your state compulsory despite the fact that most people living there can already speak it, just to reassert your supposed dominance in said state. I don't really care about this law as I don't and have no plans to live in Lagos but it really reeks of a sense of insecurity on the part of the Yorubas.
But when Anambra enacted similar laws, making it compulsory for Igbo language to be studied in primary, secondary and state-owned institutions, it was not an inferiority complex, right??

First of all, I am not Yoruba. And as an Eboe man, you should know that not everyone who disagrees with your perspective is Yoruba. I have cousins who are not Igbo, studying in Anambra and yes, they were made to take Igbo language classes in secondary school. Afterall, kids are taught French in our schools, so what makes the teaching of indigenous languages so different?

Answer this question can Lagos state host all the student in their state university?

Do u know Lagos is the most populous State in Nigeria.

Several of their students are hosted in University across the country from Port Harcourt to Enugu, Borno, Kano, Edo Delta.

Wat if all the states follow Lagos example?
No problem. undecided It will only make Lagos state students in those institutions, bilingual. They will have the added advantage of studying a second language...which would be useful to them, in future. Afterall, Nigerian students go abroad to study in France, Germany, Russia, Hungary and Sweden, and they first have to learn the language of their host country, when they arrive there before they embark on their studies.

Absolute falsehood. Igbo language is not compulsory to non-Igbo students and certainly not a prerequisite for gaining admission into state-owned tertiary institutions in Igbo land or any state. Yari.ba is not official language of Nigeria and can never become a compulsory curriculum or prerequisite subject of admission. Yari.ba people are known for tribal advocacy.
Stop telling lies. shocked Igbo language is compulsory for all primary and secondary school students in Anambra and Imo, and if they fail Igbo they are denied promotion. It does not matter where those students come from.

Yes, it is not a criteria for admission into a university in Anambra, but Igbo is still a mandatory part of General Studies courses, which are compulsory in the state owned institutions in Anambra. Do not say what you do not know! sad

Listen, I have condemned several laws in the past, because I do not believe in them. sad But this particular language law, I will never condemn it. I am not from the Southwest, but I schooled in the SW, for several years. I was made to undertake Yoruba language classes in secondary school, and I had fun doing so. Even though till today, I can barely speak the language, but I still believe every state has the prerogative to enact laws to preserve its' cultural heritage, and indigenous language. undecided

Have you read the law at all? huh The law only makes it compulsory to acquire a credit pass in Yoruba language, in order to gain admission into Lagos state-owned tertiary institutions that are not more than 5 in number. After gaining admission, it would no longer be required.

The same law does not apply to federal universities or tertiary institutions within the same Lagos state, neither does it apply to any of the over 30 private universities nationwide, or any of the higher educational establishments, in 35 other states of the federation. undecided Various alternatives exist. So what is the fuss? The law even goes against any Yoruba person, who does not have a credit pass in Yoruba language. He or she will not get admitted into a state-owned institution in Lagos.

ASUTECH which was established through Law No. 7 of 30th July 1980 by the Government of the old Anambra, and operated as a multi-campus university, with campuses in Abakiliki, Enugu, Awka and Nnewi.

In 1991, following the split of the old Anambra State into Anambra and Enugu States, the Awka and Nnewi campuses of the former ASUTECH were constituent into Nnamdi Azikiwe University by the Anambra State Edict No.5 of November 26 1991. https://unizik.edu.ng/about/

In what way is the development of a 32year Master plan for Kogi State a bad idea? Most of the development problems that we have suffered as a country were as a result of lack of planning. Ume and Oru? That shows you dont know what you are talking about. Oru died with the coming of the whiteman. Osus are not discriminated against in Igbo land except in marriage. Osus, do business, go to church, aspire in politics, become wealthy men and do everything anybody does. The only discrimination they suffer is in marriage, and as I have said before, discrimination in marriage can be for different reasons.
You must be the joker of the century. sad Osus are not discriminated against in Igbo land? shocked Who do you think you are deceiving? Ok, tell us how many Osus have been elected as Igwe in different villages in Ala Igbo, and why it is still an anathema to suggest having an Osu as a council chairperson, or have an Osu occupy the post of the village Eze. Yet, you say they are not discriminated against? Are you just saying so to deceive others, or to make yourself feel better? huh

gidgiddy:
Far worse discrimination happens in Nigeria. How many times have you heard that Herdsmen went to core Northern Muslim states like Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi and others to kill people? Very rarely. But you will hear that hedsmen are killing people in the Christian areas such as the middle belt and Southern Kaduna.

But you will never hear that anyone killed an Osu or treated them badly in Igbo land. That some families dont want to marry them is a minor issue, there are many fishes in the sea.
If you have never heard of Fulani killer herdsmen causing havoc and mayhem in core Northern states, then you must be living in Mars. In Zamfara, Fulani killer herdsmen were reported to have killed 120 people in Zamfara. Or is Zamfara a southern state? Even Ben Bruce had to bring up the situation in Zamfara on the floor of the Senate.

Muslim group questions IGP over alleged killing of 732 Fulani herdsmen | Published on January 17, 2018 By Seun Opejobi |

“Are the people of Zamfara also Christians? Killings in Zamfara have been occurring for years yet nobody did anything. The Nigerian Army, the police and DSS went to sleep. The press looked the other way. 23 locals were killed in Daraga in October 2011. 48 lives were terminated in June 2013 in Kizara village. More than 200 people were massacred in April 2014 in Unguwar Galadima. 50 were slaughtered in Kwanar Dutse in February 2016. 36 were killed in Bindin in November of the same year while another 23 people were killed in Tungar Kahau and Mallamawa, all in Zamfara State alone. All the victims were Muslims but nobody showed concern.” http://dailypost.ng/2018/01/17/muslim-group-questions-igp-alleged-killing-732-fulani-herdsmen/
In the Middle Belt, Muslims and Christians live side-by-side in almost equal numbers, in different communities across the region. A lot of those communities have been attacked by Fulani killer herdsmen, and both Muslim and Christians bore the brunt of those attacks. Or did any of the victims tell you they were asked questions about their religion or denomination before they were attacked? So why do you recycle fake news by saying the attacks are carried out "in Christian areas in the middle belt and Southern Kaduna?" shocked

And by saying that "you will never hear that anyone killed an Osu or treated them badly in Igbo land," you are only trying to water down a bad situation, or trying to sweep things under the carpet, or trying to appease your miniscule conscience. When a person is discriminated against, in terms of marriage or not being allowed to aspire to elective office both at the traditional and political level, it is a huge shame and a blot on the society in which such things take place.

gidgiddy:
The bearded general did not wage a war, you Nigerians did. All the bearded general did was declare the freedom of his people and went his way with them.

But because you Nigerians cannot do without Igbos, so you people came fighting to bring Igbos back into the hell-fire called "one Nigeria"
The bearded general waged a war. sad You can cut it, slice it or dice it any way you want. He declared secession - something he had no right to do - then he appropriated federal govt properties in the old Eastern region, and refused to heed the initial police action that was put in place to compel him to drop his illegal actions. undecided I guess when he also invaded the old Midwestern region, he was going there to invite them to a tea party, not so?

On the contrary, Osu's are not discriminated against in Igbo soceity except in marriage. I see far more discrimination here on Nairaland and in Nigeria in general were people can be discriminated and even killed based on tribal, religious, ethnic and political sentiments.

Dont complain against us, last time we declared our own country and went our way, it was you people who came to wage war to bring us back.
Osu, Ume and Oru are not discriminated against in society, within Igbo land? Guy, tell us another lie, biko. Because that is not what a number of people have said on this thread, and even in different threads on NL. sad

Discrimination on NL, is online and virtual. It ends on this portal and I have not heard of anyone suffering from discrimination in real life, which was prompted by what he heard or read on NL. undecided

As for complaints, guy you should realise that the dynamics of 1967 - 1970 when your bearded general waged an ill-fated war against the state, are quite different from the dynamics on ground in 2018. Everyone has said your people should go through the legal route, to seek its own republic, using your SE legislators at state level and at the centre. Yet, they have refused to do so. Are they waiting for Biafra to be handed over to them on a platter of gold? huh

Anyway, as long as your discrimination against the Osu, Ume and Oru continue, your Biafra is unlikely to be an El Dorado. George Orwell's cardinal principle in Animal Farm will replay itself in your proposed republic. Take it or leave it.

am not saying people don't learn from failure. Am only saying that we if d story wasn't about paddy adenuga, who would have cared?d object of purchase, chevron, now made d whole thing look like a blockbuster and folks couldn't resist. If d story was about an obscure dude who failed at setting up a phone repair kiosk, am sure we wouldn't b saying we learn from failure. By d way, which countries were at d same level with Nigeria 40-50years ago and have now become 10times more developed than Nigeria?
Yes, I agree. undecided The attraction was about the object of purchase - Chevron Netherlands, and to a lesser extent, Paddy Adenuga. The truth is that if the story had been about Paddy trying to set up a phone company in Lagos, and failing to achieve that aim, we would not have been interested. sad But the international dimension of the story, was what gave it, its' peculiar appeal.

As for countries that were at the same level with Nigeria 40 - 50 years ago, but are now more developed, let me leave you with these stories by Prof. Pat Utomi and E J Alozie-Nwagbaoso;

Where are Nigeria's elders? By Pat Utomi | Date Published: 10/14/09

The case with Ghana is also particularly sad because it appears as though history is repeating itself for the third time. Let me explain. In the early 70s, Nigeria's Head of State, General Gowon was reported by the press as saying money was not Nigeria's problem, but how to spend it. Thereafter he gave out interest free loans to the Caribbean nation of Grenada to pay its workers.

Today, Nigeria has difficulty paying its own worker and Grenada which we used to dole out funds to now has a per capita income of $11,500 which is five times that of Nigeria. This act was a historical replay of that of Malaysia, which in the 50s came to Nigeria cap in hand to get palm oil seedlings, and used these seedlings it got from Nigeria, to start plantations that produce palm oil which helped push its economy in the 70s and 80s to the global forefront, and eventually became the world's largest producer of palm oil, and (wait for it) has in the 2000s been exporting palm oil to Nigeria!

Now both President Obasanjo and General Abacha during their time in office gave out huge sums to Ghana as either loans or gifts, and today, Ghana has celebrated multiple years of uninterrupted power supply while we are producing electricity at par with Ghana even when we have about eight times their population. This is the third instance in this pattern of history repeating itself from Malaysia , to Grenada to Ghana , all using gifts from Nigeria as stepping stones to national greatness while Nigeria retrogresses.

A Call to Action:Nigerian Youths Must Seek Participation in Politics | Written by EJ-AlozieNwagbaoso |

For an example, Nigeria and Singapore were at par GDP wise, HDI wise, Unemployment wise and had the same third world status, in the 60s. In the early 60s, Singapore was importing water from Malaysia. Singapore has not a single thing, natural resources wise, while Nigeria has everything and is the 7th largest oil producer in the world. 6 decades down the road:
• Per Capita: $3,416 (Nigeria) – $55,182 (Singapore);
• HDI: 0.504, 152nd (Nigeria) – 0.901, 9th (Singapore);

While Singapore’s economy is heavily diversified, Nigeria’s is still heavily dependent on oil. Nigeria, in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s was marred by a lot of military dictators who cared very little about development but were busy instituting corruption, committing human rights abuses and siphoning money to private accounts abroad.

Nigeria, despite her oil wealth and days of oil booms, failed to economically develop, diversify; and cater for her people. Nigeria still ranks so high in terms of low quality healthcare, low standard of living, infrastructural crisis, poverty, corruption, unemployment, inequality; has not been able to industrialize; and has one of the least HDIs in the world; despite being the highest economy in Africa and the largest oil producer in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Since 1965, Singapore has developed rapidly, earning recognition as one of the Four Asian Tigers. It places highly in international rankings with regard to education, healthcare, and economic competitiveness. The Singaporean economy is known as one of the freest, most innovative, most competitive, and most business-friendly. The 2013 Index of Economic Freedom ranks Singapore as the second freest economy in the world, behind Hong Kong. According to the Corruption Perceptions Index, Singapore is consistently ranked as one of the least corrupt countries in the world, along with New Zealand and the Scandinavian countries. Singapore is the 14th largest exporter and the 15th largest importer in the world. http://hibe-online.com/a-call-to-actionnigerian-youths-must-seek-participation-in-politics/
Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia are the countries I referred to. sad Yeah, I guess I exaggerated by saying they were 10 times more developed, but truly they are way ahead of Nigeria, in so many areas, especially when you look at a country like Singapore which has one of the best transport systems around.
