Education › Re: Zoology Vs Food Science: Which Has More Prospects? by laudate: 1:37pm On Nov 27, 2017*. Modified: 5:39pm On Nov 27, 2017 |
blaquebelle: Hey Nairalanders,
I'm currently in a state of confusion now and i thought i could reach out to the knowledgeable ones on this forum who can help clear my mind.
On applying for admission last year i was given zoology to study, but i didn't like the course. Although i went ahead to take the opportunity, i tried for another admission this year into pharmacy. But my course was changed again on getting admitted and i was given food science instead.
I initially wanted to just go ahead with the one I'm doing already (zoology), but i met some people who informed me that food science is better. Now I'm confused on which one to pick.
Please I'd like any professionals in the above fields to enlighten me more on them including the prospects and which is better in our economic climate. I tried researching on both but i didn't come up with much. I hope i can find answers here.
I don't know the mods in charge but I'd like if this topic can be pushed forward for more coverage. I am not looking down on any profession. Someone once asked: " Why waste so much years in school learning something that has 5% chance of happening?" But my own point is simple. Even if you do not end up practising what you have studied at uni, the skills, rigour and research you put into acquiring your degree, will always come in useful as an applied skill, in any other field you choose to go into. So university education is not overrated. I once mentioned Ibukun Awosika in another thread, who is the Chairman of First Bank. She actually studied Chemistry in university, as well as an MBA. I doubt if she has ever used her degree to get a job. But the skills she picked up at school, were applied in the business world, and today she is one of the highly-rated business women in the country. Finally, you mentioned zoology. It may interest you to know that there are over 27 different branches of zoology from Aquaculture, Oceanography, Virology, Zoopathology, Entomology, Parasitology, Malacology, Wildlife Biology to Environmental Management and Toxicology etc. You can always specialise in any field. The sad thing is that people have such a poor perspective of such courses, because they do not even bother to find out what they can do with it. And each year, our private sector firms end up contracting jobs in such areas to foreigners, because our own people can't be bothered to undergo specialisation in these fields. I know graduates of Zoology who specialised in Environmental Management, Toxicology and Pollution Control at Masters level, and are now working in oil and gas companies, and putting their knowledge and skills to good use. If you specialise in Aquaculture & Fisheries, while studying Zoology, you can easily open a fish farm and run it successfully with the knowledge you have gained. Are you aware that there is a branch of Zoology called Food Toxicology?? Unfortunately, I dont think this PG course is offered in Nigeria, but it is available in foreign universities. Specialists in this field, work in food and beverage companies, or multinationals that operate in the life sciences sector. Zoologists also research new vermin control drugs or veterinary medicines for pharmaceutical companies. |

You could have stayed at home instead of going to the hospital if so sure about Jesus' healing powers
CIAO...gotta go to work] Jesus did it! Sorry, I know it offends your sensibilities, but I repeat: Jesus Christ the Master Healer did it. Doctors treated her for a whole year, yet she did not recover. Then she was scheduled for surgery. So many people go for such operations, and die on the operating table. Others survive the operation, but die a few days later. Why wasn't the doctor's skill able to save them? Experienced doctors often say that they can only do their best, but the final verdict rests with God. Doctors may treat a case, but God cures it wholly. Blessed be the name of the living God. To the OP, Ebadan Ogbefua, may your testimonies be permanent in Jesus name. May affliction never rise again, a second time. |

My advice to you is simple: Speak for yourself. The fact that you are not intimidated by a brilliant or intelligent woman, does not mean the next man is not intimidated by them. I know too many guys who suffer from an inferiority complex, whenever a woman exhibits more intelligence than they do, in any given situation. Like someone else said, "how come the slay mamas and brainless beauties, are the ones that most men go for at the end of the day? Again, I refer you to the power situation in nigeria. These were sold to portfolio investors. But you and I can attest to the shitty supply and service we are getting. The same Vodacom tried to buy Econet (now known as Airtel) in 2004, but had to abandon the deal several months later, due to a variety of reasons. Vodacom first intended to buy a majority stake in Econet Nigeria in a deal worth some USD150 million in equity, and another USD100 million in operational loans but Econet Wireless International had contested the deal in the Nigerian High Court. It sued Vodacom for what it describes as "inducement to breach of contract". http://www.balancingact-africa.com/news/telecoms-en/8603/nigerias-vee-network-the-transaction-that-sunk-a-deal-and-cost-two-senior-people-their-jobs It later came back into the Nigerian market and acquired a telecom infrastructure company,(i.e. Gateway Integrated Telecoms Co.) in order to offer carrier services business, wholesale satellite cellular backhaul, as well as international and regional voice and mobile broadband solutions to the Nigerian telecom industry. International companies are wary of taking on liabilities in emerging markets, as any breaches discovered locally may be held against them in their home country. Here is more: Knott-Craig former CEO of Vodacom said earlier this year that two of its shareholders - Vodafone, which owns a 35 percent stake, and SBC Communications, which has an indirect stake in Vodacom through Telkom - were concerned about compliance with the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The law, which threatens fines and jail terms, is designed to stop US multinationals and corporates and those companies with business in the US from engaging in corrupt practices. "If it were not for that, we would be operating in Nigeria now," Knott-Craig told Moneyweb earlier this year. http://www.balancingact-africa.com/news/telecoms-en/8603/nigerias-vee-network-the-transaction-that-sunk-a-deal-and-cost-two-senior-people-their-jobs |

Galadima said this during a chat with one of our correspondents on Saturday. The Secretary of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, at an event on Thursday titled, ‘Tracking Noxious Funds’, which was organised by Kent University Law School and Human and Environmental Development Agency, had explained that any whistle-blower, who helped the government to recover anything above N1bn would receive less than five per cent commission.Owasanoye, who was part of the team that drafted the whistle-blower policy had said, “If you blow the whistle and the government recovers cash, you are entitled to between 2.5 per cent and five per cent. The maximum limit is five per cent.“According to the policy, if you blow the whistle and it is below N500m, you get four to five per cent because the higher the amount that is recovered, the lower the percentage that is given.

The company specializes in electrical, mechanical, telecommunications and infrastructural development services. It also offers training to electrical engineers and technicians, in its premises in Lagos in areas such as Electrical Control Panel Building, Electrical Installation Works and Maintenance, as well as Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning. Chief Dr. John Agboola Odeyemi, former Chairman of Ecobank and past President of Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, (LCCI) is the founder of JKN Nigeria Limited. https://guardian.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Odeyemi-2.jpgMessrs JKN Nigeria Limited was the distribution network contractor whose firm contributed to the timely and efficient delivery of the Island Power (IPP) project, which powers over 230 street light installations, 40 court rooms, 8 operating theatres, a 153 chamber mortuary, 16 clinics/ centres which include 2 HIV/AIDS clinics, 2 emergency centres that harbor 3 fully equipped Lagos State emergency ambulances and a special babies unit. This project from conception to its commissioning was undertaken in less than 18 months, making it the fastest ever executed Independent Power Project in Nigeria. The commissioning of the Island Power (IPP) project plant immediately led to the de-commissioning of 30 - diesel generating sets ranging between 100 - 1,000 KVA each, eliminated the inevitable pollution including the noise and carbon monoxide caused by those generators. The plant also has a vast cost saving component to the state government of 46% over project whole life cycle. Messrs JKN Nigeria Limited's track record over the years has seen them executing projects in the power and telecommunications sector as well as public, commercial and hotel buildings. They have also executed projects for the military, government parastatals, public institutions, financial institutions, oil and gas, etc. Before concluding, I will like to acknowledge the efforts and contributions of Island Power Limited, (an affiliate of the Negris Group in the realization of this project). I also express appreciation to the distribution network contractor, Messrs JKN Nigeria Limited and many others who contributed to the timely and efficient delivery of this project. It will be invidious for me to attempt to individually acknowledge all of them. They have all proven to be reliable partners towards the achievement of our common objective.
This project has demonstrated that the provision of electricity is not rocket science. With the right political will, resource application and dedication, we can eradicate darkness from our land by a Government that is committed and cares.
This project is also very strong evidence, if any is required, of the power of the private sector to drive change in any society and our Government takes pride in this project and the many other PPPs that it has enabled, to expand the opportunities in this economy. http://www.tundefashola.com/archives/news/2011/05/25/20110525N01A.html
