kYjelly2: The charging stations will spring up when the need arises, developed by smart entrepreneurs who jump in to fill that need. Obviously stations may not spring up for the few electric cars owned by early adopters, but that's what early adopters do, they pave the way for the masses.
Same deal with the expertise, although with EVs, you hardly need mechanics, since there is no oil to change, no spark plugs to change, no engine misfires and cylinder compression to diagnose, no head gaskets to change, no catalytic converters, no oxygen sensors, exhaust manifolds and so on. Instead you have reliable DC and induction motors that spin almost forever and super simple 1 or 2 speed transmissions.
As for efficiency, something like the Hyundai Ioniq gets about 4.5miles/kwh or 7.2km/kwh. So it takes about 142 watt-hours to add 1km worth of range to the vehicle which is extremely efficient.
I believe a lot of households in Nigeria own gensets that are rated for 5kw and above. So adding a 1kwh load would be akin to adding an iron to the gen or a small ac, which many already do, while still powering their tvs, lights, fans, computers and other electronic devices. For the early adopters, using a solar array would be even more viable as these early adopters are likely to be in the middle-class of society or the rich-class of society.
As for disposals of batteries and end of life, that shouldn't be a big deal as there is already an extensive network in Nigeria for disposing lead acid batteries, just ask anyone who has ever sold dead inverter batteries, or car batteries. The network for disposal of lithium chemistries would also be similar to that of lead acids. Besides, these batteries are rated for 10+ years and replacing them with a new of fairly used pack is not that difficult for trained engineers to accomplish. Oga, this your long epistle shows you are totally dissociated from the reality on ground in Nigeria. Who told you that batteries are disposed of safely in Nigeria? They are not. They are a major source of pollution in our environment. Hybrid cars that use both fuel and batteries have been imported into Nigeria in the last 10 years, but guess what? The expertise to maintain and repair them is still almost non-existent. Most owners of hybrid cars have tales of woe to tell, when it comes to maintenance. And after a few years, they just abandon it when the wahala becomes too much! As for saying that 5kw generators are easy to get, you keep forgetting there would be an increase in the quantity of of fossil fuel needed to power such generators, if they are to be used to charge electric cars. Like I said earlier do the math. Someone already made it clear, that despite the huge number of charging ports in China, thousands of their cars still run on fossil fuels. As for the charging ports that will be needed to charge those cars, will you release the money to import and install them here? Electric cars are not a priority for now. We should be thinking of fixing our infrastructure, healthcare, educational system and job provision status. Electric cars are an unnecessary luxury.... |

kYjelly2: I will keep playing my roll in urging Nigerians to be wise and calling out their foolishness, amongst other things.
I didn’t claim to “know book” more than the next man, but damn it, must Nigerians be so void of critical thinking?
They support the worst leaders, shun great ideas and are allergic to positive change.
It takes just about 600watts on the low end to charge an electric car, a load that can be present while your gen is on, or be placed on solar panels. It can be charged at work, or at home or anywhere with a socket and is more efficient than I.C.E cars by several magnitudes.
However look at all the responses, not even one person can embrace a future idea, it’s just sad. Oga, stop this your ideology abeg. Where are the charging ports in Naija to charge such cars, even if we assume that electricity is readily available? What about the expertise of our local mechanics and rewires to maintain them? And when the batteries reach end of life, how do we dispose of them safely, securely and effectively? The 600 watts you mentioned, how far can an electric car run on that one single charge? Or you think people will buy a generator and fuel it, only to allow a stranger to come and charge his car for a couple of hours, for free? If anyone decides to levy a commercial fee for charging an electric car, do you know how much it would cost? In fact, with the cost of fuel and gensets, the cost to charge an electric car commercially is likely to be higher than the cost of fuelling the car with petrol, in Nigeria. Do the math. |

AnanseK: Agitation doesn’t mean there was a region. Go and read the history of Joseph Tarka and how he was deceived by the so called southern backers and read the proceedings of the Northern Nigeria parliament on the so called Middle Belt. Read about the voting on the issue and the side taken by the Middle Belt Congress ( MBC) and don’t forget to read about Ibrahim Imam. Thank me later. Every region starts with an agitation. Read the story of how the old Midwest got its own region carved out of the old Western region. The request for a separate Middle Belt identity did NOT start today. It started long ago, and that portion of the North-Central has stressed its identity over and over again, as a separate distinct body that should NOT be lumped with the core North. Even the South-South is not a political region in its own, but the groups in that region have repeatedly stressed that they have a separate distinct identity, that should not be lumped together with others. Today, if anyone mentions the South-South, we all know what areas and ethnic groups are being referred to, and where they are located as well as what kind of issues, drive their geo-political thoughts. The same thing should apply to the Middle Belt. Why is that too much to ask? Why can't people grasp this simple fact? |

flamingREED: Someone should start the fire on Twitter already. Let it trend till it sinks into the minds of our unfertilised gametes:
#MiddleBeltIsNotNorth.
Who knows if this is the beginning of the deliverance we've been waiting on for years?! But the quest for the Middle Belt to have an identity and a structure that is totally separate from the core North started a long time ago in the late 1950s. While the term ‘Middle-belt’ has been in existence and use since ‘1950’s’ pre-independence Nigeria(Remember the defunct United Middle Belt Congress ‘UMBC’ headed by Joseph Tarka?), the term ‘North Central’ (states) as a region came into existence in the 1990’s, under the late Gen. Sani Abacha’s regime.
Hence, you begin to wonder: why wasn’t the region accurately named ‘Middle-belt’ region when the six geopolitical zones were created?
Was it omitted to actualize a “One big Northern” agenda? Notwithstanding that a typical middle-belter (from the North central states) has nothing in common with a typical man from North East/West.
Contemporary, the Middle Belt Forum (MBF) operates as a successor to the UMBC and in many occasions has refused to identify as ‘Northerners’. https://medium.com/@JikistMove/a-look-into-the-middle-belt-north-identity-crisis-and-other-related-matters-3825af8b6480 |

Read the history very well, Awo was almost killed by irate Biafran soldiers and on getting back home, Awo was arrested by Nigerian government for TREASON!
Yorubas contributed soldiers to the Nigerian army fighting the Biafran soldiers but that's where it ended until OJUKWU ATTEMPTED to make inroads here after he overan Asaba. That's when the likes of Awolowo rose up and showed that brain is ultimate, not brawn, when it comes to warfare.
Back to the discourse here, Awolowo RECOGNISED what we are all suffering now. He attempted to SHIFT the political balance with Zik. Zik reneged and followed what he believed was political gain at the expense of many things.
If Zik had realised that it's better to work with Awolowo, he'd have laid his joker on Awo's table rather than trying to see how he can subdue a "foolish" north. He was badly mistaken.
Fast forward to today, Igbos are as beautiful as they come. No doubts about that. But history is history. Truth is truth! Hmmmn.....this is interesting! Thanks for sharing. Most people often ignore the fact that Awolowo did the little he could to prevent the war, by trying to appeal to Ojukwu's sense of reason. klufs: In this day and age, no one can keep a secret account any more, everything is connected to the BVN. Unless the fund is illicit then the owner would have to take deliberate steps to keep it unconnected to his/her BVN. Once your BVN or even one account is known at any bank, all the accounts connected to the owner will be known. Also, next of kin has nothing to do with who gets the money, it is the administrators on the letter of administration or Executors as stated in the will. This thing your saying used to happen, but BVN solved it. It can only happen when the family is not exposed at all. Some people have valid reasons for hiding their money from their spouses. Some wives will give you their family Bill. I'm not married, but from experience with girlfriends, I see valid reasons to keep money away. I am curious. Even if you know the BVN of a deceased person, how does that give you info about his account balance, if you do not work inside his bank where the account is domiciled, and you do not have his debit card, cheque book or ATM pin? Just asking. I believe only hackers can get access to funds in an account without going through the account holders' bank, once they know his BVN. |

breezeng: Unfortunately, the court official also do collude with unscrupulous bank officials. But the time you finish all the court processes which take a long time, you may be confronted with an already looted account. Nothing you can do since no-one knows the account details. By then, you would have paid all the official fees while the govt will also be waiting at a corner to deduct another percentage of the money. At times up to 30 %. It's a bad situation. Am aware that the Nigeria Senate knows about this and they promised taking action on the issue but none yet. Its pathetic. But before applying to the probate registry, try as much as possible to get the last bank statement of the deceased, or his account balance to know how much is left there. Involve the police & lawyers, if you have to, as the banks do not like giving this information out easily, to anyone except the account holder The charges to be paid in the probate registry, is usually a percentage of the value of the deceased's assets, and the funds he left behind. |
