Yorubas are the movers and shakers of Nollywood
Amazing! Nigerian Movies Gross over N1 billion in 2016

Here’s how 2016’s Top 10 Chart looks like for Nigeria – Please note that not all the figures are verified rather we have used Filmhouse Cinema’s weighted average market share to come up with box office estimates for films not released by FilmOne.

The Wedding Party – FilmOne Nollywood – N203 million - Yoruba Producer
A Trip to Jamaica – FilmOne Nollywood – N178.5 million - Yoruba Producer

Batman Vs Superman – Warner/Crimson – N140 million (Estimated)
Captain America – Marvel/Disney/Crimson – N119 million (Estimated)
Suicide Squad – Warner/Crimson – N116 million (Estimated)
London Has Fallen – Independent/Okhma – N90 million (Estimated)
Doctor Strange – Marvel/Disney/Crimson – N85 million (Estimated)
Gods of Eqypt – Independent/Okhma – N80 million (Estimated)
Mechanic Ressurection – Independent/Okhma – N75 million (Estimated)
76 – Silverbird Nollywood – N72 million (Estimated)

From AY Makun‘s “30 Days in Atlanta”, Ebonylife‘s “Fifty”, Omoni Oboli‘s “Wives on Strike” to Kunle Afolayan‘s “The CEO”, and now “A Trip to Jamaica”, “The Wedding Party”, “93 Days”, “76” and many more, it is clear that the Nigerian movie industry has the potential to rake in billions of dollars in revenue.

The Wedding Party, Nigeria’s latest blockbuster movie, has broken box-office records at every milestone since it was released nationwide on December 16 2016. It took just two weeks to eclipse the record of N178 million, held by ‘A Trip to Jamaica’, emerging with a staggering N200 million before the New Year weekend was over. Both films led a strong lineup of popular Nigerian films in 2016, including ‘Wives on Strike’, ‘The CEO’, ‘93 Days’ and ‘76’.

The Wedding Party debuted with the biggest opening weekend in Nollywood history with N36 million; the best-ever opening week with N66 million; the biggest week ever with N110 million; and a jaw-dropping Christmas box-office total of N146 million.
Bros!! Well done! cheesy but you are using old figures to calculate how much 'The Wedding Party' has made till date.

As at January 2017, it had made a little above =N=200 million, but by end of February 2017, it had recorded ticket sales of over =N=400 million. It has just been launched on DVD. By the time you calculate what that film has made from February till date, you would discover the Wedding Party has made well over =N=500 million naira. undecided

The Wedding Party’ rakes in over N400m in ticket sales ~ The Guardian Newspapers ~ 2nd February 2017

Nigeria’s widely acclaimed film The Wedding Party has doubled the previous record of the most tickets sold by a Nigerian movie and keeps going, netting over N400m at the box office.

In December 2016, the Nollywood box-office record stood at N178.5 million and looked likely to remain for some time, especially in the midst of the current recession. However, when the ELFIKE Collective released its romantic comedy, The Wedding Party, on 16th December, the film racked up N203 million in just two weeks, to top the Nigerian box office for 2016 and become the highest-grossing Nollywood film in history. https://guardian.ng/art/the-wedding-party-rakes-in-over-n400m-in-ticket-sales/

Oyekunle Ayinde Olukotun, (or Kunle, for short) was born in the mid-sixties in London, to a Nigerian family from the Southwestern part of that country. His first name 'Oyekunle' means 'royalty fills the house.' He grew up in Nigeria, spending his teenage years within its' cities. He completed his undergraduate studies at Calvin College, but finished PhD in 1991 at University of Michigan, while working on multiprocessors and timing analysis tools. Afterwards, he applied for a job in Stanford University in USA, and has worked there ever since.

Olukotun set up a company known as Afara in 2000. Two years later, that same firm was acquired by Sun Microsystems, an American company producing computers, computer components, software, and information technology services, which later got famous for creating the Java programming language, Solaris. The deal that saw Afara (Kunle's firm) becoming part of Sun, was concluded for a little less than $100M US dollars. A few years later, that same company built by Kunle, and acquired by Sun Microsystems generated business worth over $1Billion USD in a year, for Sun. Sun Microsystems itself, was eventually acquired by Oracle Corporation in 2010 in a deal worth US$7.4 billion.

Kunle still remains in the academic world, chasing after new ideas, new projects & new inventions. His core passion is in programming, and he is working really hard to discover how to program MC chips. Today, Kunle Olukotun offers consultancy services to I.T companies, governments, multinationals - virtually anyone who needs his services at about $100,000 USD per session. http://blog.ngarua.com/2008/07/niagara-1-looking-back-interview-with-kunle-olukotun/

Kunle Olukotun is the Cadence Design Systems Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Stanford University and he has been on the faculty since 1991. Olukotun is well known for leading the Stanford Hydra research project which developed one of the first chip multiprocessors with support for thread-level speculation (TLS).

Olukotun founded Afara Websystems to develop high-throughput, low power server systems with chip multiprocessor technology.

Afara was acquired by Sun Microsystems; the Afara microprocessor technology, called Niagara, is at the center of Sun's throughput computing initiative. Niagara based systems have become one of Sun's fastest ramping products ever. Olukotun is an ACM Fellow (2006) for contributions to multiprocessors on a chip and multi threaded processor design. Olukotun received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from The University of Michigan. http://arsenalfc.stanford.edu/kunle

[s][/s]I swear down ,I'm not making this up.80 % of the businesses listed here are in tsunamic debt. I know this very well. Yoruba are good when it comes to packaging, media noise. But they are just empty.
Did you know that many Yoruba guys cone to Aba to make clothes and footwears, return to Lagos and package it as their own, sell it very expensive.
I will also admit that Yoruba dominate media very well . they like office work ie service job. But when it comes to management and sustainability. They can ruin your business. They are good at PR, they embrace it so well while Igbo people don't fancy those things. But any day one Igbo man will become successful through that area,he will populate it with his kits and kins
Hmmn.... other people see it differently, bro.' sad The proportion of Yoruba people going to Aba to make clothes and footwear, is far much less than the number of their people that makes those things, within the Southwest. They just do not make noise about it, unlike your people.

Here is another view.

Iamzik:
Good.

Another reason is the fact that so much emphasis is placed on money in the east. A Yoruba or Hausa man may consider seniority in family decision no matter how poor the eldest may be but for igbo it is most often by who can throw money around. I'm saying this from experience of my igbo family friends. You need to de-emphasis this notion that money is everything. It leads to desperation and artificial inflation.

So you can see that your large population and lesser landmass is what accounts for large number of ndigbo living outside the east and not because they are desperate to go and develop other states as often claimed here. Igbos are arguably the most dispersed tribe found in every State and region.

And the same reason why your native folks will want to reserve the little land for indigenes rather than sell it off to strangers. I can relate with that.

That said, don't you think it's suicide for kanu to now encourage all igbos to come back home? If they all heed the call you will immediately have a humanitarian crisis in your hands.

And for the same reason, igbos need to respect and be grateful to all regions and states where they currently reside. I have not seen that respect even here on nairaland.

The host community cannot be at the mercy of the stranger. It is the other way round

If north /east or west/east give each other quit notice today, the east will feel the heat more because there are more igbos in the north than you have northerners in the east. Same goes for the west.

I will always advocate for true federalism, restructuring and resource control over session anyday anytime.
A seceding Biafra will be a land-locked country within a country. Not funny if you know the implications bro

Most Nigerians have never heard of the industrialist, silent multimillionaire (some even says he is worth over a billion) and astute investor known as Dr. Adeyinka Bibilari. cool He owns Royal Mills and Foods Limited, the manufacturers of De Royal Instant noodles, De Royal Water and other products.

He also set up Adkan Services Limited several years ago, to carry out construction and real estate projects.cheesy He has extensive shares in the Abuja Model City, which covers several hectares in Gwarinpa within Abuja. It has been conservatively estimated at billions, while another of his projects is the Abuja Sun City in Galadimawa district, within the FCT. wink That isn't all. He also owns profitable manufacturing outfits like Zuma Paints and Chemical Company Limited; Crest Aluminum (Nig.) Limited and Regal Telecommunications (Nig.) Limited. wink

Dr. Adeyinka Bibilari is an astute entrepreneur, seasoned administrator and Project Consultant. He holds B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Lagos and University of Nigeria, Nsukka, respectively. He also bagged a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the American University of London.

Dr. Bibilari has been a key player in Nigeria’s construction industry for the past 25 years. Specifically, he pioneered the construction and development of the prestigious Abuja Model City, Gwarinpa II, comprising 351 ultra-modern housing units. Valued at over N7 billion, the Abuja Model City Project, which was built for the middle and high income earners under the Public Private Partnership Program (PPP) of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), has received accolades both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Bibilari is also the brain behind the construction of the ultra-modern “Abuja Sun City” Galadimawa, Abuja. The sprawling state-of –the art estate valued at over N30 billion, is for mixed income earners.

In addition to serving as the current Chairman of Infinity Trust Mortgage Bank Plc, Dr. Bibilari is also the Chairman of Adkan Services Nigeria Limited; Zuma Paints and Chemical Company Limited; Crest Aluminum (Nig.) Alistair Soyode's intention on visiting the United Kingdom in the late 90s, was to play football. That was where his passion lay. But after a while he found himself in the media world, and due to the lack of positive programmes targeted at Africans, he decided to do something about it.

So he set up BEN TV in the UK. Today, Soyode is the founder of ABC Group, the first African and Caribbean-focused Media Company, who are owners of BEN Television, Freevoice Radio, AC Perspective magazine and other online platforms in the United Kingdom. The Regional Director (Africa) for London based BEN Television is Lanre Ijaola, who works with Soyode, to ensure the station is smoothly run. The channel broadcasts on BSKYB SKY 238, NTA Startimes 154, cable, WAWOO TV and freeview platforms globally.

As an entrepreneur, Alistair Soyode's BEN Television has been the source of his community involvement which has gone on to becoming a house-hold name around the World.

BEN TV's mix of entertainment, news and sports programs reaches more than one million viewers across distribution networks-- not bad work for a man who originally came to England to play professional football.

His other entrepreneurial business interest that supports the community in capturing the opportunities available ranges in diverse ventures. He is into personal development strategies as well as been a link between different leaders from public and private sectors. Soyode has been given the Panache Global Entertainment Recognition and Award for Excellence (2014)
http://pgrae.over-blog.com/alistair-soyode
London, England (CNN) -- He may be the chief executive of a flourishing media company, but the last thing Alistair Soyode wants to be classified as is a media mogul.

"Classify me as someone like a farmer, because that's what I studied," he says as he attempts to describe a career arc that is as unorthodox as his television channel. "I'm a farmer who moved into television." Soyode founded Bright Entertainment Network (BEN) television, the first and longest-running African and Caribbean-focused television channel in the United Kingdom, in 2002.

Eight years later, BEN TV's mix of entertainment, news and sports programs reaches nearly one million viewers daily -- not bad work for a man who originally came to England to play professional football.

However, his aspirations to become a pro footballer failed to materialize. "I think the chill and the weather didn't allow me to concentrate, so I decided to pack my bags and find something else to do," he says in an interview with CNN's African Voices. After working in telecommunications and selling mobile phones, Soyode started BEN TV after trying and failing to find an appropriate production company to create shows for a Nigerian television station.

"I couldn't find a black TV station where I could go to ask them for programs ... so I thought 'if I set up a production house, I'll be able to produce a program and supply it to a Nigerian TV station'", he says. "And that's how the idea of BEN television came about."

While Soyode oversees BEN TV from offices in London, his first love is Nigeria, and he has two priorities toward this end. The first is to give something tangible back to his native country; the second to re-brand Nigeria as an iconic nation.

He is the European chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO), set up by the government in 2000 to unite Nigerians living abroad with an interest in contributing to the development of the nation. http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/africa/10/05/nigeria.soyode.ben/index.html

Then, if you remove Lagos (which is not an exclusive Yoruba state (Igbos own most of the choice properties there by the way), South west won't be different from the North East.
Apart from that, on a per capita basis, it is clear that Yorubas are not richer, so what are we saying?
I agree that you might have more old money than the Igbos but when it comes to new money, forget it, you don't stand a chance.
Look for something more plausible to post than posting tissue paper owners and plastic chairs which you have been using to spam the thread.
Keep consoling yourself. sad Your claim that 'Igbos own most of the choice properties there by the way,' is not backed by any data, empirical evidence, statistics or hard facts. Several posts have been made concerning the landholdings of estate developers in Lagos, which shows the Yorubas are clearly the largest property owners in Lagos. Yet, you pretend not to see it. sad

Several posts have also been made about Yoruba businessmen and industrialists who are engaged in business activities worth billions, from construction, to logistics, aluminium cans manufacturing, medical evacuation services, media ownership, oil and gas, telecoms and even haulage. Yet, you still claim that they are nothing more than 'tissue paper owners and plastic chair manufacturers,' even though it was your brothers that first started posting pictures of Igbo businessmen engaged in such activities. It is okay. undecided

We can all see that you are suffering from bad belle of the highest order, so whatever you cannot aspire to, you intend to pull it down. sad I pray God cures you soon of this malaise. You are going to need more help, as these people continue to record more successes in their endeavours. cheesy

And thesame reason why your native folks will want to reserve the little land for indigenes rather than sell it off to strangers.

Who has heard of Tokunbo Talabi? He is the owner of Superflux International that manufactures all the MICR-encoded chequebooks used by all the banks in Nigeria, Ghana and a few West African countries. His company is part of the consortium known as Bitflux Communications - Special Purpose Vehicle promoted by Bitcom Systems Limited and Superflux International Limited, to bid for the 2.3Ghz Wholesale Wireless Access Service Licence (“WWASL”) which was auctioned by the Nigerian Communications Commission (“NCC”). Bitflux won the bid and was awarded the WWAS licence, which includes a Digital Mobile Licence and International Gateway Services.

Superflux International Limited was incorporated as a private limited liability company in 1995 and commenced business in 1998 in Victoria Island, Lagos. It subsequently moved its security printing facility to a 12,000 square meter purpose built factory complex located at 3 Vori close, Ogba Industrial area. It has a staff strength of over 300 employees.

Accredited by the Central Bank of Nigeria, Central Bank of Zambia and other West African Central Banks, it is the industry leader for cheque provision and other security printing solutions in Nigeria and has become the preferred supplier of cheques to major banks in Nigeria, having over 80% market share. Its services cut across the financial, manufacturing, entertainment, education sectors as well as Government agencies in Nigeria and across several African countries. http://www.superfluxnigeria.com/about.aspx
Tokunbo Talabi is the founder Superflux International Limited. Prior to starting up Superflux, Tokunbo was a pioneer staff of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc. where during his 8-year stint, he served and headed various positions in the bank, such as Corporate Banking, Retail Banking, Corporate Services and Banking Operations. Tokunbo’s excellent management of the company’s businesses is evidently proven as Superflux has since become a conglomerate with several active interests in the Financial and Real Estate sectors having diversified investment portfolio interests in agro-allied, steel manufacturing, sectors in companies like Great Nigeria Insurance Plc, Courier Plus, TnT Express, Flux Logistics, Speedy Prints, Papyrus Limited. In 2008, Superflux International Limited competed and won the prestigious Legatum Pioneers of Prosperity Africa Awards as Grand Prize Winner. https://www.bitfluxng.com/directors.html

Your brain is riddled with severe ache aye?

Now wherever you learnt how to string words up and spew crap,
" The above was the question you echoed/Seconded...whatever." Should've meant meant something there.

'Brozuma' made the statement, which you eagerly seconded. Now if your dying brain still have a few bar left, you would've noticed that your immediate response to his question was what I quoted to admonish your folly-sea scuba diving self. But no! You wouldn't have noticed, being that you were overly eager to exhibit your folly in comprehension.

I actually thought you were a learned being, clearly I was wrong. This will be the last time I bandy words with a sludge bucket E-idiot.
arrivederci.
I still repeat 'you are daft!' sad Thank God everyone on this board can read and comprehend. You accused me of making a statement, which was actually made by someone else. Instead of facing BroZuma the person who made that comment, and seeking clarification from him, you decided to launch brickbats in my direction. Wtf? shocked Aren't you the one exhibiting folly in comprehension?

And yes, I will not stop asking the ex-convict about the charges that led to his arrest. I am well within my rights to do so! If you do not like my questions, please hug the nearest transformer with wet hands! angry Finally, thanks for telling us you are a sludge bucket. That description fits you to a 'T'.
