DANGOTEONE: RIP.So because they were working for a private hospital, they stopped being Nigerian citizens? Does the government not have a responsibility to take care of its citizens (whether alive or dead), irrespective of where they are located? Isn't that why developed countries that value the life of their citizens, would evacuate them from any foreign country whenever a crisis erupts? ![]() Do their government officials stop to ask them what they are doing in such crisis-torn countries before packing them into a plane and flying them to safety? Can't the same principle apply in this case? The fact that Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh was able to physically restrain Sawyer from bolting under her watch, which prevented him from escaping and going around to infect a greater number of citizens, deserves commendation. That singular act of courage, led to her being infected. This infection, in turn, led to her death. So why shouldn't government compensation apply here?? ![]() |

Lordlexyy: The biggest threat to our collective unity remains the igbos and the hausa muslims. While the hausas use religion to kill, the igbos create disaffection among us. No one is afraid of disintegration but excavating past stories around the civil war to insensitively create disharmony among Nigerians is unacceptable. Unfortunately, only few chest beaters come online to make unguided utterance against our togetherness. If a referendum is help today, is obvious that many easterners would declined the proposed biafra. I'm more concerned about one strong, indivisible Nigeria that will some day emerge as an economic house to be reckoned with. But some paid goons, lacking in critical thinking would found occation in this trying period to draw us back. The civil war ought to have been a lesson not to start what you can't finish, but no, these unreasonable people will still go around biting drum of war. You don't heap your misfortune on someone for steering the bee nest. The Yorubas are not cowards, their resilience shows people who have forsight on our greatness. Is a fact that Seccession would not stop the igbos from being pests to other regions.Hmmnn ...... where is my groundnut and popcorn? I need to get a corner seat before the ethnic baiters start throwing their usual punches. ![]() The ethnic trouble makers come from all tribes, not just the two that you mentioned up there. Someone is going to reply you very soon, in a post that is short on facts but heavily filled with petty insults, weird rhetoric and hate. Don't say I didn't warn you.... |
ofenmanucom: Do U really blame the eternal slaves? They can only do their master's bidding. It behoves on us to help liberate them as our Southern brothers. The Biafran Liberation Forces tried their best but failed... Our generation will not fail(God willing) Who are the "eternal slaves" that you are referring to? And what liberation are you talking about? |
UyiIredia: ...... The trains GEJ bought are okay. I for one won't mind if he buys no trains at all but spend money on technical educationq to train the blacksmiths, auto-technicians and engineers who design and build trains. Much better IMO.Haba! So you believe the 1970 locomotives with its noisy, hot, congested smelly coaches that take 2 days to transport people from Lagos to Kano which is a distance of less that 800 km, when other comparable trains in other parts of the world cover the same distance in less than 30 hours, are what Nigerians truly deserve? Ah, omo, you don fall my hand oh! ![]() |
Even if electric trains are not feasible for now, why not buy locomotives that can move at a faster speed than these 1970 tokunbo types that are currently plying our rail tracks? It doesn't make much economic or commercial sense, for a working professional to spend 2 days travelling from Lagos to Kano or to spend 3-4 hours on a trip from Lagos to Ibadan by rail. ![]() |
12inches1: You are also very daft (since you first introduced that insultive word on this thread) to be comfortable with a chu chu train. Dont our leaders ride in london underground. What we need in Nigeria is sustainable PT and not all these chu chu trains of the 18th Century. How many people will willingly enter chu chu trains? Perhaps you need to study why the BRT system was a success initially before LASG lost control. I can remember the first time I entered a BRT. The weather was very hot and the driver put on the AC. If you see the level of smiles on the faces of all the passengers that day. Even the passengers and the Ticketmaster that were quarelling suddenly stopped. Everybody was all smiles. Dont Nigerians deserve some level of comfort too? Yet our governors and ministers ride in 225million naira bullet proof vehicles. After over 5years, I still sometimes think that by chance one day I will enter another BRT bus with AC (unfortunatley not). I guess first impression lasts long. No way in heaven I'm entering a chu chu train.I beg, God will bless you twenty times on Sunday for advocating improved standards that will boost the comfort level of ordinary Nigerians. The same type of locomotive trains that were in use during my late grandfather's days in 1938, is the same type of locomotive that our Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) went to buy abroad, and brought to Nigeria to declare as new trains. And somebody is saying that they did well. Honestly, NRC is the most clueless parastatal in Nigeria. No one can contest this title with them. (1) No large electronic visual display screens in their terminals, where you can see the timing for the proposed arrival and departure times of incoming trains! (2) No loudspeakers announcing the arrival and departure of trains. (3) Zero information that can be used to plan your trip. ![]() (4) Uncomfortable, congested, hot poorly ventilated coaches whose interiors pose a health hazard. (5 Discourteous staff that have not been trained to put the customer first. ![]() (6) No help line, help desk or dedicated customer care phone number on which you can get info. about train schedules. You need to be physically present at the terminus before you can verify if a train is available or not... proper waste of time. ![]() 97) The Diesel Mass transit executive coaches from Lagos to Otta only run 2ce a day, despite the high fare of =N=1,500 for a return ticket, or =N=750 naira per leg.(i.e. 7.30am in the morning and 5.30pm at night). I mean like .... seriously? How are they ever going to recoup their money spent on those executive coaches??! The list of their incompetent antics is long, but let me stop here because i don't want to spoil my mood.... ![]() |
wasak: I was unfortunate to travel by rail from Friday to Sunday (today ). it's the worst experience any Nigerian can pray for. The coaches were already full by the time we arrived at abeokuta... unfortunately tickets were sold @ Ilorin osun oyo minna in fact every terminal.... passengers had to squeeze themselves through the window to enter the train. the lucky ones were those who either boarded from Lagos or those who managed to stay atop the train or in the toilet....Hehehe... Bros, accept my condolences on your failed relationship. For your information, as at today the 7th of August 2014, the Lagos to Abeokuta train has stopped running for over 3 months. No one knows why.You are complaining about the crowd in the train. What about the noise?? The filth ![]() Only God knows how many people have been infected with contagious diseases while boarding the trains, or riding in its' congested coaches. ![]() |
thelastPope: Even you? Haba, you dey fall hand with dis kind ignorant post, walahi!Oga, your comparison is not detailed enough. What do the interior of the Los Angeles California to Austin Texas coaches look like? What comfort level do they provide? Is it comparable to the discomfort encountered in the coaches on the Lagos - Kano route? Please when replying, post the url/link from Google so we can read and verify. jumobi1: It's not 1400 km. it's 1400 miles which is about 2300km.@jumobi1, thanks a lot for clarifying the issue for us o jare. The link/url would have been helpful, sha. Anyway, thank God for more objective views & matured minds like yours, on this thread. ![]() After wasting 30 solid hours on the rail tracks, what time would you have left for other activities when you arrive at your destination? In this day & age, when other countries are installing modern gauge tracks and high speed bullet trains to cut down on delay, some folks are celebrating old, refurbished locomotives that are managing to crawl over a distance of 690 km from Lagos to Kano in 30 hours! |
BoluGabriel: quit it mate, you're pathetic!Hahahha....!! Why are you being so defensive? Kai..... the guilty are afraid! ![]() |
Please don't be fooled by the fine pictures of the diesel trains shown on our local TV stations praising GEJ’s transformation agenda for our railway lines, omo, it is a big April fool joke that is trending in August. Lack of adequate info is likely to ruin the whole "train" revival. Let me share my experience: ![]() On Monday the 4th of August 2014, I left Ajah area in Lekki for Iddo terminus on Lagos mainland, hoping to catch one of the executive coaches that are often shown as part of GEJ's transformation agenda which ply the Lagos-Otta-Abeokuta route, as I had an appointment with a client for 3pm. I had searched on the internet to see if I could get the phone number of the NRC train station or the train schedules, but there was no relevant information on what I wanted. So I got to the Iddo station at 12:30pm. I was directed to a small cubicle marked “INFORMATION”, where I met a female staff. Me: Please I need to make a booking for the next train leaving for Lagos-Abeokuta. What time would it depart? To say I was stunned, was an understatement. In the year 2014, NRC is still being run like a yam seller's stall at Ogbete market. I weak o! |
Kobojunkie: We are spending Billions of dollars for 1970's legacy machines and people don't understand why in the year 2011, purchasing a machine that covers Lagos to Ibadan in 7 hours is nothing to shout praises for.I beg help me tell them! Not only that, the trains are so slow that if you make the mistake of going by train, you may miss a vital appointment. All those praising Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), forgive me if I do not join your thanksgiving. The NRC is one of the most clueless government owned agencies in Nigeria. How can they be celebrating the revival of diesel locomotive trains that spend 22 hours to carry passengers over a distance of 206 kilometres? Have you been to their terminals lately? Their ticketing officers and information staff need further training to be able to impart useful information to customers and prospective passengers. There is no information help desk, help line, leaflets or dedicated phone number that you can call to verify the intra-city of inter-state train schedules. Electronic visual display units that show when the next train is approaching, or the time table for departure and arrival do NOT exist. Take Iddo terminus in Lagos, for example. All you have on display, are some typed sheets on a board showing the respective fares, “departure times” and train locations. If you make the mistake of thinking the information is up-to-date, you are in for a big shock. As for the fine pictures of the diesel trains that are being shown on our local TV stations praising GEJ’s transformation agenda for our railway lines, omo, it is a big April fool joke that is trending in August. BoluGabriel: No! You are the attention seeker. Big HeadOh, I can see you joined Nairaland on the 10th of July (i.e. less than a month ago) for the sole purpose of dishing out insults? Hahaha...! ![]() Something tells me you took on a new user name after you were banned on another thread, and you have still not learnt your lesson. ![]() Oya confess, what was your name in your former life? |
egopersonified: So people should stop opening threads to ask questions or post what probably half of nairalanders already know. These are what make nl, so deal with it.No, people should stop opening threads to post questions, whose answers are already available to them in their respective schools! If you have a headache, would you post it on Nairaland or go straight to the pharmacy/chemist to get an analgesic (e.g. panadol) for it? |

citizenisb: The Lagos doctor who treated American Patrick Sawyer (who died from Ebola in late July) has been confirmed as infected by the deadly virus by Nigerian authorities. Please, the colleagues and employers of this Nigerian doctor should ship him straight to the US hospital where the newly developed serum (i.e. Zmapp) was administered on the infected American doctor. From current media reports, it appears to have caused improvements in the American doctor's health. It could also help our nigerian doctor. |
Inherent Hazards/Potential Risks The principal potential hazard with LP Gas is fire and explosion. This derives from its inherent quality of high flammability and in extreme cases may combine with another condition, i.e. high pressure, and lead to the BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion) phenomenon. This is a type of explosion that can occur when a vessel containing a pressurised liquid is ruptured due to high temperature and pressure. Such explosions can be extremely hazardous. There are also hazards incidental to the various modes of transport for distribution and use. An additional potential hazard may arise at the point of use if ventilation is inadequate, and the products of combustion are not dispersed into the atmosphere. Carbon monoxide may be produced and reach dangerous levels. LP Gas 'sniffing' i.e. the intentional inhalation of LP Gas vapour seeking a narcotic effect, can result in injury or in some cases, death. The risk associated with such hazards (with the exception of sniffing) can be controlled using available, proven technology, i.e. the safety equipment and procedures normally used by the LP Gas industry. Liquid LP Gas will cause cold burns if it comes into contact with the skin. Propane, with its low boiling point is more hazardous in this respect than Butane which, in cold conditions, is slower to vaporise and disperse. The eyes and body must be protected when handling all liquefied products. LP Gas vapour, being heavier than air, may, in the event of a leak, accumulate in confined spaces and low lying areas. The means of ventilation and meteorological conditions will influence the movement and dispersion of the LP Gas vapour. Any uncontrolled release of LP Gas is inherently hazardous. A liquid LP Gas leak is considered more hazardous in that it will expand to vapour form with volume in excess of 200 times that of the original liquid volume leak. Being heavier than air, vapour will tend to lie, or drift, close to the ground with a risk that it will find a source of ignition while it remains within its flammable limits. Liquid LP Gas has a high co-efficient of volumetric expansion and therefore cylinders and tanks should never be completely filled. They should be filled with ullage (the unfilled space in a container of liquid) to allow for liquid expansion caused by an increase in temperature. The degree of ullage necessary will depend on the operating conditions, especially the maximum expected operating temperature. ![]() This potential risk is further controlled by a combination of safety devices and procedures and especially by control during product transfer operations. This potential risk explains why cylinders and tanks should only be filled under the supervision of competent persons and why illegal filling is dangerous because of the risk of overfilling.
You can read the rest of the article here: http://www.worldlpgas.com/about-lp-gas/safety/good-safety-practices/lpgas-safety |
tomiobj: A gas cylinder is pressurised. U can put it right next to ur cooker. Grew up with this nd been doin it personally for 14 years. Derez nothing bad. I didn't know that people actually put the cylinder outside. The danger of keeping a gas cylinder near the cooker is the same as storing fuel in a carKai! Stop it o! Ehen ... I don talk my own.
