King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, who reigned over the oil-rich Gulf country for nearly a decade, would be buried Friday following the afternoon Islamic prayers. Abdullah, who had been the country’s main decision maker since 1995, died early on Friday. A royal statement on Friday in Riyadh said his half-brother Salman was elevated from crown prince and was now the monarch of the country. The statement noted that following the burial in Riyadh, citizens are to be invited to swear allegiance to the new king. The new King, Salman has held the key posts of Defence and Interior Minister and was a key part of Saudi Arabia’s diplomacy, often visiting Western countries. Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden was expected to lead a U.S. presidential delegation to Saudi Arabia to pay respects. Tributes have begun to pour in from Arab neighbours and Asian nations. President Barack Obama expressed condolences and saluted the late king’s commitment to close U.S.-Saudi ties. Obama said in a statement that as a leader, he was always candid and had the courage of his convictions. He said one of those convictions was his steadfast and passionate belief in the importance of the U.S.-Saudi relationship as a force for stability and security in the Middle East and beyond. Also former U.S.President George W. Bush described Abdullah as “A wise and reliable ally, helping our nations build on a strategic relationship.” |
Wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, on Thursday said nobody or group could threaten her if she decided to visit any part of the country. Mrs. Jonathan, who spoke with one of our correspondents through her media assistant, Ayo Adewuyi, was reacting to statements by some youth groups threatening to disgrace her if she attends the grand rally of the Peoples Democratic Party in Yenagoa on February 5. Two youth groups – Bayelsa Youth Vanguard and the Mangrove Boys of Bayelsa – had, in different statements, issued in Abuja and Yenagoa, barred the President’s wife from accompanying her husband to the rally in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital. The youths, who accused Mrs. Jonathan of instigating political crisis in the state and working against Governor Seriake Dickson, had vowed to embarrass and disgrace her at the rally. But the spokesman for the President’s wife described the groups as faceless. He said Mrs. Jonathan would not be cowed into avoiding any part of the country because of threats from such groups. He said, “We will not descend so low to be joining issues with faceless groups. “The fact however remains that the First Lady as the wife of the President cannot be threatened by anybody or any group if she decides to visit any part of the country.” Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Valentine Ntomchukwu, has issued a warning to some youth groups threatening to disgrace the wife of the President if she attends the grand rally of the PDP on February 5. Two youth groups – Bayelsa Youth Vanguard and the Mangrove Boys of Bayelsa – had in different statements issued in Abuja and Yenagoa, barred the First Lady from accompanying her husband to the rally in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital. But Ntomchukwu, while addressing a select journalists in Yenagoa on Thursday, urged members of the public to disregard the threat, saying it was the handiwork of some faceless groups. The commissioner said, “I want to appeal to the general public to come out in large numbers to welcome the President and the First Lady who have done so much for this country. So, these miscreants cannot disrupt the peace of Bayelsa. “We have been enjoying peace and even on that day we will be celebrating because it is the day the President is coming, not necessarily as the PDP, but as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. So, they cannot come and tarnish the image of President in his home state. “ Ntomchukwu said the police would provide adequate security for the President’s wife and other political groups visiting the state for rallies, campaigns and legitimate businesses. He asked the BYV and the MBB to desist from making such provocative and inciting statements, which he said, were capable of puncturing the existing peace in the state. He added, “The police will not hesitate to deal decisively according to the extant laws with any such groups when arrested. I want to assure you that we are already trailing the Mangrove Boys anywhere they may be. “So, my advice is that these boys should just go away from the state entirely because since they have done this publication, they have put themselves on the firing line and we are definitely going to pursue them. “We are operating with intelligence and all the security agencies are at our disposal. As soon as we catch them, they will face the wrath of the law. Even though they are faceless, any time they become visible, we are definitely going to deal with them. “We are asking the well meaning Nigerians to come forward and give information not only on these boys but on all criminal activities. We have already identified them by their names and we are trailing them.” Copyright PUNCH.All rights reserved. Pls can someone confirm the rumours that the list is out in EBONYI STATE.... Pls oo |
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned Gov. Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State against disrupting or interfering in any way with the APC presidential campaign rally in Ado-Ekiti on Saturday, saying the governor’s plan to hold a parallel rally on the same day is a recipe for chaos. In a statement in Lagos, Friday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party wondered why Gov. Fayose will schedule a rally also for Saturday at Fajuyi Park, which is a major route to the venue of the APC presidential campaign rally. ”This is nothing but a deliberate act of provocation, and it is a dangerous game by a Governor who has now become notorious for making incendiary statements and taking irrational actions. Gov. Fayose should be told in clear terms that being the Governor of a state demands huge responsibility, not brazen rascality,” it said. APC wondered what point the Governor was trying to prove by seeking to set the supporters of his party, the PDP, against those of our party, which is basically what he is planning to do by organizing a parallel rally along a major route to ours at Ado-Ekiti on Saturday. The party said its members and supporters, in line with their peaceful nature and the ethos of APC, neither disrupted nor interfered with the PDP presidential campaign rally at Ado, and finds it difficult to understand why the Governor will be plotting to trigger chaos and disrupt the APC presidential campaign rally. ”There must be a limit to mischief and waggishness, especially from a Governor that almost set Nigeria on fire with an irresponsible, incendiary and repugnant advertisement wishing our presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, dead. ”Since everything points to the fact that Gov. Fayose lacks the capacity to understand the implication of his actions, it is high time his masters called him to order before he sets the country on fire. A good starting point is to warn him against holding a parallel tally at Ado on Saturday. ”The security agencies should also advise the Governor against actions that are capable of triggering violence and disrupting public peace. If the Governor fails to heed the voice of reason, then he should be solely held responsible if there is any breach of peace or a disruption of the APC presidential campaign rally at Ado-Ekiti on Saturday” it said. |
