XTRA CLASSES lecture for chidren (such as after school lesson or tutorial classes ) should not be mistaking for homeworks. even in my days in the university, i dont really go well with homework. there was a time when i was absent from the campus for about 3 weeks, it was my close friends that did my homework and submit them for me. i was never happy about this. this applies to many tertiary students also. considered this course offered by lagos poly student "business mathematics by DR Shogunro", it is a course offered by over 15,000 students in accounting, bus adim e.t.c. The lectural every year asked the student to do the exercises in the handout which numbers over a thousand question. what i have is that many of those students which are closed to me brings the assingment for me to solve for them and they submit it. this is a real tidious exercise for me, but cant say no because of my relationship with them. at the end of the day, they had not learnt anything from the intended exercise (homework). this is also the scenero in our secondary school. it should be interesting that in my secondary school days, i do not even have a physics or chemistry notebook not to talk about doing homework, but there is hardly any topic i dont understand in them. i attend almost every lecture and listenned to my teachers, that i felf is enough for me with the backings of what i read in textbooks.

but here in nigeria, we find out that it is the parents that actually solve the question and not the student itself. the student does not really unstand the subject matter. take for instant, a parent once came to me to give an answer to a qualitative appitute test meant for a pry 2 student. me that can solve any question in mathematics at school cert. level had to think for more than an hour to get some of the solutions to the problem. i told myself that wa o, !, of what use is these exercises to the childrens learning? this applies to many verbal apitude and quantitaive apitude. in many cases, i just tell them the answer. i know that if i explain, its a mere waste of time because the task are more difficult than their understandings.

well, this is not a suprise to microsoft or bill gate. in the 90's when netscape launched the first browser, the navigator, bill gate postpone all the then current project going on in microsoft and directed the whole energy and resources of the company in coming out with its own browser. he forsaw a future in which the internet could render all the functions of the desktops os and applications software useless since applications could be down loaded as applets and does everything its own line of products can do. we can see sme some these as the little wordprocessor in compose in yahoomail. he came out withits own IE1, IE2, which was a childplay untill he strarted the real challange with IE3. If the future of computing lies in internet OS, bet microsoft will launch its own version and the competition continues.

This is an article i saw on page 45 of the PUNCH newspaper published on friday 24th of April, 2009.it reads:

"some  teachers in Liverpool during association  of teachers and lecturer conferences claims that homework is a waste of their own time and the children's time.they said it is a a time that could be used for more profitable on effective learning both in and out of the classroom."

My own view of this is that in Nigeria, most homework given to children are puzzles meant for the parents since thy help their ward in solving the question without many students actually grabbing the problem in question. nairalanders, what are your own views?

Elizza:
great-guy, i guess you are an OAU student.

Exams are nt the only way to test ones knowledge, take for instance JAMB. Not every one that passes jamb is brilliant and not all those that fail are head-nuts.

I know those that do excellently well in practicals but are average when it comes to writing exams.
Now do you tell me that they have no knowledge of the subject they did excellently well in the practicals?
OR
Those that did la cram la pour in their exams and got an A are those that are truly knowledgeable in that subject?
the question is how do those that are brillant fail the course and those that are not qualify to pass it do it?

for examination to make meaning, the structures of the questions should be diverse; your ability to remember, your ability to apply the rules such as formulars, your deep knowledge of the subject matters e.t.c. it should covers much of the stipulated syllabus and their should be sme logic questions in which the student should use its number 6 in answering

Education › Re: Examination:: True Test Of Knowledge? by lekside44(m): 7:33pm On Jul 04, 2009
it depends on the type of examination and the nature of the questions set. the SAT/GRE exams do not test your knowglege on disciplines such as physics, econs e.t.c rather, they are more of logic eng/ maths questions which test your intelligent. your knowledge can be accessed based on the questions you can answer within a stipulated time. this aslo test your speed and accuracy. i think the problem in nigeria is that examiantion had been bastardised. the real purpose is no longer the case

for the young ones who were born in the 80's, you would not know the effects or intriguing THILLER had on we the youths then. back then, videos were not that common as we have it now and even for those that have, vidoes, most especially thiller were not easy to come by. i first saw (and only saw ) thiller videos on weekend musical program on LTV 8 (UHF 35). back then, any day micheal's thiller is been shown on the show, it used to be a special day for us the youth then. but there was a problem then; the complete video was never shown in full back then. it took me moe than 14 years after to see the video. it still remains one of the greatest musical video i have respect for.
as for its greatest music that rings in my mind: WHO IS IT

some of the greatest blues ever sang includes micheals HEAL THE WORLD, WE ARE THE WORLD, EARTH SONG, YOU ARE NOT ALONE ,

the last time i saw a 286 was almost two decades ago. and DOS runs perfectly on 286, even an 8086. DOS has no GUI and isnt multitasking so besides TSRs there are no reasons for it to "drag on and on". if however TSR stuff or device drivers are loading high in upper memory, you'll encounter some probs which in this case are strictly related to poor memory management as progs load low.
sure, 286 was around 2 decades ago, but many brought it into the country about 10 years latter. back then, computer is computers because they are not much in he country as we have now and anything goes.
Ex Inferis:
multicore is not directly related to how vista performs, more like how apps were designed to utilize multicores. even if you have a dual quad core but your apps were coded for a single core system, all those extra cores wont help one bit. indeed, they may even slow down system performance.you need apps designed for multicore systems to enjoy the benefits of multicore.
sure, multicore computers are not related to how vista performs but they support multicore processors. the os split operations of the programs among the rmulticores processors thus saving time and gainning speeds. we ar yet to have programming lang that are meant for multicores.
Ex Inferis:
really? give an example of such an OS besides OS/2, Windows 1.0, Windows 2.0, Windows 3.0, windows 3.1, windows 3.11, windows 95 etc. these essentially have DOS as their foundation, but microsoft let go of DOS in NT, and fully in Windows 2000.

jesus. the ignorance of some people is mind boggling
o/s 2, win1,2,3,3.1 are basically ms dos with gui. microsoft saw the limitatins of their old and outdated ms dos and plan to redesign dos and its micro kennel. this they did with win nt4. but to ensure compatibility, they plan transistional os starting with win 95, down to win 2000. thus from win 2000,we are more or less using the enhanced or redesigned ms dos with gui. take it or leave it, that is the truth. you may not be aware or this because they have not sold the character users interface version of that os.

lekside, I'm curious. What do you do for a living?

No offence, really, but you sort of read like a science fiction scriptwriter. . .
well, true. i want you to understand taht many of the gadgets that we have today are once fictions written about and acted in movies years and decades back. but now they are parts and parcels of our daily life. even the rockets and space travel to the moon we have today are once imaginatives to the people of the old. i tell you, tommorrows space travel does not lies on rocket engines as we know it today. their overall efficiency is very low. we have tech such as a laser propelled gyroscope. a model of it has been tested. if i have your mail, i may try my possible best to mail you a video clips on this. also anti matter (anti hydrogen/proton) could even do better. we also have electrons propelled rockets, e.t.c just to mention a few
Computers › Re: Xp And Vista, Which One Is Better? by lekside44(m): 7:15pm On Jun 23, 2009
vista is the lastest version of os from microsoft which added the advantages of the improved hardware technology (memory/speed e.t.c) many people however trys to run these new os on older systems and they compalain. i experience the same more than a decade ago when i was trying to run dos on a 286. it drags on and on. my advice to all is if you do not have a dual core with at least 2gb ram, stick to xp. what you all should understand is that most of the os we use today are dos with enhanced graphical users interface. vista requires so much memory that i still consider our present computer hardware as insufficient. i am even looking forward to an os that surpass visa in terms of memory requirement. i enjoy the zooming tech introduce in vitsa, the fast display from the task bar e.t.c. i often do imagine what new feutures will come with future os,? can't wait to see it. if you think what you have now is ok, stay put. bye

Politics › Re: Tax: Lagos Pastors Go To Court by lekside44(m): 9:42am On Jun 08, 2009
well, if the state gov. has decidedb to tax churches/ mosque, no problem. this is not new as jesus and its disciples are taxed. how ever, what i am concern with are this
1) all babalawos, eyos, eguns, ifas yemojas e.t.c must also be taxed. what is good for one is also good for all.
2) the the state gov should go ahead to aduict the account of these religious organisations. to ensure transparency, the government should know the numerical/financial strength of these churches since they differs in these values.
thus the govt should note the income from each members and calculate the percentage payable to the church i.e 10% for christain as tax e.t.c
the government should also know the amount paid by each member as offerings and calculate their own proceeds from such. chickens, palm oils e.t.c given to babalawos are inclusive.
3) any members of the church/e.t.c that does not re-emmits its tithes, offerings e.t.c should be sued since this is the only way the church/e.t.c can get money govt to give to the govt.
Career › When Best Do We Invent? During Necessity Or When Economy Is Buoyant: by lekside44(op): 9:08am On Jun 08, 2009
there is this saying, " necessity is the mother of inventions". Malaysia and many Asian countries became a super power in technology and manufacturing because of the level of poverty in their economy back then. it is even sad that malaysia came to nigeria to collect palm carnnel with with they build their economy and became a force to recorn with in silicon valleys.
my formal HOD when granting a tv interview at mitv stated that nigeria cannot invent or discover anything since many scholars are hungry and thus cannot focus on research. america and other developed contries continue to develop technology, inventing new theories and doing a lot of wonders because the citizens do not have to think about what to eat, drink or what the futures would be.
so nairalanders, please discuss
