If you study abroad, you will appreciate engineering and really fall in love with it. After getting the theoretical knowledge in the classroom, you have access to the different softwares developed with the application of calculus, differential equations,statistics,probability etc to solve real life problems with mathematical modelling. This will really make you appreciate engineering and love it more. You get the icing on the cake when you now get some years of professional experience abroad.

in fact, you have just describe who an engineer is. an engineers is not expected to hold tools and start maintaining. these are only included in their curriculum so that they can make better judgment in their designing for technicians and craftsmen who undertake these task. the technologist only interprets and transforms the engineers design to reality using standards such as BS or ASME standards.

nigeria should forget about industrialisation and face products that can be a source of foreign exchange. see, even when we industrilise, can we match the foreign made goods? the taste 4 foreign goods among we nigerians is high. even the industries that established themselves here are forced to closed down due to high cost of running on generator.

That is, compared to our usual competitors in the global jobs market, Indians, Filipinos, and maybe Chinese to some extent.

well, the truth is that it is very difficult for an immigrant to becomes a top shot in all these advanced countries except you are born or raised there. in fact, it is even difficult for you to get a menial job since you need a work permit in the first case to get a job. but in nigeria, anything goes so far you have the money

first of all, you need to know who an engineer is. an engineer is someone that have gone to university(not even hnd polytechnic except polytechnic university as we have in advanced countries) to study your course of choice. to be a technician, you need at least ond and hnd for technologist. if you are undergoing on the job trainnining with no certificate, you are an artisan and with certificate like city and guilds, nabtec e.t.c you are a craftsman

I have studied both in Nigeria and abroad, One truth is obvious: Students in Nigeria are caged by their environment. We read many text books and know the books from back to back but, we have little or no hands-on-training. Great Nigerian students have so many potentials that need adequate polishing.

As for those of you that think you are much better, you may be able to prove yourselves in various international competitions. The world bank organizes one every year for youths all over the world. Ayn Rand institute also organizes a few for students and graduates (different categories) all over the world. IMC is also open to undergraduates to prove their maths skills. It is a chance for you to compete with world class inventors, innovators, writers and thinkers of your age group. Right now, there are over 1000 international competitions open for undergraduates and graduates worldwide.

well, i happened to undergo industrial training with nestle food Nigeria where i had first class practical engineering experience. anyway, as with our university, i think it is ok because university is a place where you are meant to have as many knowledge in your field as possible. the main problem with Nigeria is not the theoretical knowledge, but the application of of these theories into practical implementation. practically (and thus technologically) we are notting. the western world are what they are because they can transform these theoretical knowledge into practical or physical product. in Nigeria, we left the practical applications into the hands of dropouts eg automobile mechanics are done by people who have no basic scientific knowledge in these fields. in western world, for you to become an automobile mechanic, you need certification in these fields.

knowledge is universal. the question of who is better is an individualist events. however foreign universities are more equipped and the environment are friendlier. also the issue of corruption is lesser.

With time, at some point, Nigeria will have to start to industrialize, or crumble. I doubt the nation will crumble. Already in the oil sector, we're in the age of local content. With time, manufacturing and services will start, and then engineers will take their chance.

well, its not just about a matter of time, but the practitioners must see the need for it. many organizations today have the capital, but until they see the need of these computer systems in their analysis and design of their goods, the story will continue in this trend even in a million years to come. thus what we need is to use this medium and others to re orientate our upcoming future engineers so that they can follow the path of righteousness as we have in advanced countries.

I think you missed the point of the arguments.
Those mathematicians at the Hague surely must have an area of specialisation. Whether number theory, statistics, operational research, calculus, it is the applications of mathematics that would be useful to Shell.

For me as an engineer, i know enough mathematics to do my job. Essentially, we engineers are applied mathematicans and physicists all in one. We don't discount the importance of mathematics to our respective areas of specialization, but we certainly don't need mathematicians to design circuits and systems. We are equipped with enough applied math to do that

nigeria is one f, ked of a country. its a pity that many people graduate as an engineer from the university and work 4 multinational company, but do not practice engineering. i started my career as a technician but at the peak of that career, i saw the need to have a university degree. i graduated from the university, but my visit to many industries and rap-our with my friends who are working for various company i only observed that what many does is not different from what i did as a technician. i am currently working on softwares that will enable our engineers utilizes most of the formulas they learn t in school in their various fields.

its is a pity. many people today dont get to work in the field of their studies. you migth have appreciated your job more if you had been working for an electronics manufacturing company where you can apply all of d theory you learn in sch. this is the reason why in my earlier post i said elec eng are not needed in nigeria
