what a sad event. may his soul rest in perfect peace. but come to think of it. if he had graduated and is doing is nysc scheme, the whole world will still call for the head of the program. now that he is still in school, should we call 4 cancellation of undergraduate program? the main problem is the insecurity of lives and properties in nigeria. the govt has not lived to their responsibilities.

you can compare the game plan in a final match with that of a group stage. a lot of cautions/precautions are usually taking. that is the reasons why many final matches are not that always interesting/spectacular.

well, until Nigerians sees the significant of education, we would continued to be where we are. this is not just a matter of passing exams and acquiring certificates, but the applications of what is been learned in school to day to day activities. in Nigeria today, certificate is a gateway to employment, after that they do things ordinarily (with the exception of few professions such as medicine, civil engineering). this is the reason why many non professionals sees themselves as been capable of occupying these positions. now tell me, how many of them has venture in acting as say a doctor?
Nairaland General › Re: Stolen Car Recovered After 36 Years by lekside44(m): 10:03pm On May 14, 2011
well, the technology then makes tracking of stolen car very difficult. now from my bed. even your phones and ipad can be tracked using gps systems inbuilt in them. in nigeria, we need a very good database system and our police should be provided with computer system with internet service so that they can link to the police command server and get information about any car they stopped at a checkpoint using its plate no, chasis no

Texazzpete, lekside44, and Apple were spot on. Where are all the other guys? Time is the true test of every product.
It turned out the iPad sent net books packing and cut deeply in PC sales.
Where is the slate from MS? Every company now wants to make an iPad killer.
Apple has turned the table over MS and Google in profits and revenue.
And now we have the ipad2. It's dual core and faster than the fastest supercomputer of the 80's.
Give it time and it will completely replace a PC. I hardly use my Mac/PC these days. I have everything on my iPad except when I need to do some advanced geeky stuffs.
true talk. microsoft itself is worried that people are getting used to ios operating system and may find no need for pc/windows computer. remember in those days, people are ibm crazy. but today, how many people even remembers ibm when they are shopping for their pc?

Most major languages nowadays are C-based or can be extended using C. I would prefer if the average nigerian undergraduate was introduced to C.

Its easy to learn and with just 80+ basic functions, you can actually carry the basic ANSI C library in your head.

Problem: Most nigerian professors or lecturers are incompetent in C and as such they cannot give what they dont have.
i would even prefare them learning c plus plus rather than c because when you learn c plus plus, you have learnt c automatically and object oriented technology.
mind you, many schools which teaches old lang also teaches a c based lang such as c , c plus plus, java, c#, e.t.c

May I correct you there. there is a Big Difference between BASIC and Visual Basic and it is not in the Design or Concept. it is in the actual nature.

Basic is a High-Level Instruction Code and it is basically instruction-driven

Visual Basic (VB) is an Event-driven Programming Language. it is mostly Visual because of its associated development environment (GUI) from Microsoft for its COM programming model
brother, which event is driven? is it not the native codes of the old basic, FORTRAN and the rest? what is just added to these old fashion language is the object oriented technology which activates these native codes when an action or event is taken. brother if you have a command button and do not have any code programmed into it, will any action occur? well, OOP technology made computer available for everybody since you only need to take an action like clicking a menu or an icon with a mouse or any pointing devises and the pre installed codes are activated. these pre installed codes are the basic, fortran, cobol and pascal of the old except that minor changes are made to the data structures and syntax-es to reflect modern methodology in programming.
I don't think there is anything wrong in learning PASCAL, FORTRAN and the likes. I see it as an introduction to programming.

It is better to teach a student to THINK like a programmer rather than teaching the language. Once you can think like a programmer, you can learn any language on your own. Programming is NOT about the language, its about the LOGIC.
sure, programming is not about the lang., but the logic. i can write the same problem in over a hundred land and get the same result. once you can think like a programmer, what you need to do is to leaern the syntax of the lang of your choice. however, some lang have some adv over others and pocesses some disavantages.
deniyor:
COBOL and FORTRAN are no longer in use in the practical world this days. I remember having to learn those languages in OAU. When I left naija, my profs ( the older ones) said they used the language when they were about starting universtiy and totally outdated.
DerMeister:
I hear if you wanna go to uniport, u have to learn fortran 77 to pass 2nd year engineering!!!!And the course is probably taught by a 77 year old prof, Weak!
and who is telling you that present day languages will sooner or later not go the way of their predecessors. in fact, research and report shows that the way we program today is noting compared to the programming lang that will make the computer have artificial intelligent close to those of human. anyway, one major problem with older lang is that they are CUI based while newer ones are GUI based. there are very little difference between basic and VB.

the nigerian curriculum 2004 by nabtech stipulate basic, fortran, cobol, and pascal for ond and c pp for hnd. as 4 uni, i do not know. for me, basic should be retained 4 first year/beginners. the essen of prog in sch is not to make you a pro in one lang but intro you to the concept after all lang comes and go

, unfortunately, people still look to strong men to save them, ostensibly from their own naivete and laziness,
it is not that we are lazy, but we have not achieved the technological breakthrough required. the blame should be on our leaders who either have no vision, or have no interest in achieving these great task. there are many blue prints eg the 6334 system that was to transformed the countries educational systems in achieving the neccessary technological transformation.

Banderas:
Colonialism was a blessing. Colonialism (and it's attendant oppression) is a force of Nature and development. There isn't a single civilisation that has ever risen up without experiencing one form of oppression or colonisation.
sure, i agree in totality. what we needed to have condemned was slavery. many people missed these up. colonisation started after slavery was abolished. what we should have complained about was the way they went about the colonisation. the whites actually used it to steal from africa and find product for their new goods after the industrial revolutions and have fully understand the concept proposed by adams smith in his wealth of nations.

as with the present world, they are still colonizing undergroundly by sponsporing their preferred candidate. during the colonisation of nigeria, many obas in the western region quickly called on the europeans and signed a treaty with them to have their kingdom as their protectorate to prevent invasion by more powerful obas of the neigbouring kingdoms since the civil war was still going on thru out the yoruba kingdoms. thus the case of calling by some citezens of libya and the above example are all the same
