Health › Re: we Didn’t Sack Resident Doctors; We Only Suspended Them’, The Federal Government by Leopantro(op): 2:34pm On Aug 18, 2014
McStoic: Long term jealousy indeed! Guess you think everyone envies your profession, ain't it? FYI, I am very very comfortable in the career i have chosen. I stand to gain nothing by being jealous or intimidated by a fellow professional. I have doctors, med lab scientists, pharmacists and other medical personnels as relations and friends hence i have nothing against them.
i sincerely doubt that you have them as friends because they would have told you that government of different countries fund residency training. such knowledgeable "friends" would also have told you what you view as healthcare in Nigeria is a mockery of healthcare in other countries and that the problem is not doctors but the lack of government structure in Nigeria. finally, you might have observed that those "friends" are trying to make arrangements to leave the country, did you ask why?
Health › Re: we Didn’t Sack Resident Doctors; We Only Suspended Them’, The Federal Government by Leopantro(op): 7:35am On Aug 18, 2014
McStoic: Even if I am wrong, why should a temporary staff like the resident doctors hold the government by
the jugular at a time like this? Why must a temporary staff dictate to the employer on what and how
to remunerate the permanent staff? Sometimes I wonder at the way some of these doctors reason.
In one of the Federal Medical Centres last week, a so called senior consultant in Family Medicine
was questioning where the FG got the N1 billion they released for the eradication of the Ebola virus
(failing to realize that, a man may not have money but will definitely be forced to have even if it
means borrowing when his wife is in labour) . His rationale was that since government claimed they
didn't have money, where could they have raised that from!! Imagine how a full fledged health
professional is reasoning, you can now imagine how the lesser group who are resident doctors will
be...........Funny set of people! You cannot win a war against the government, be warned all of you.
"Even if you are wrong?" i just proved without a doubt that your statement and mindset was wrong. therefore, any further statement from you is considered bias and illogical. the implication of being proved wrong will aid in enlighthen others that will follow your line of reasoning and utter unreasonable statements and course of actions.

someone made a wrong statement two weeks ago and because of that statement, countless Nigerians bathed with salt and 5 Nigerians died.
Health › Re: we Didn’t Sack Resident Doctors; We Only Suspended Them’, The Federal Government by Leopantro(op):
McStoic: Whether the resident doctors were sacked or not, one thing remains clear: returning to status quo will cause a lot of chain reaction in the health sector.

In saner climes, the responsibilities of the government towards a medical student stops or kind of gets limited once they are through with their intership or housemanship as the case is ( In USA, for instance, they sponsor themselves while the government only pays them stipend to aid them) .For those who are not aware, the federal government still trains a resident doctor to pass his exams towards attaining consultancy! Meanwhile, other medical students in say med lab and co are left to cater for the expenses incurred while trying to attain the same status of high class specialists.

From the foregoing, resident doctors used to pay for their residency but at a point in time, Nigeria didn't have enough doctors and it was decided (during the military era) that the cost of the residency program would be shouldered by the government to enable greater output of doctors. For many years this had been on, no one complained, not even other members of the health sector. Cue in to recent developments, where doctors are against like better benefits for other paramedical bodies. Hardly anywhere in the world can you find the government bearing the total brunt of a student's tuition. These resident doctors are students and ought to pay for their further studies just like other allopathic students do. It's clear that only the doctors have been favoured all these while and now they are trying to abuse the privilege. If the suspension should ever be called off, the president should be ready to pay for other medical students as well. Most Nigerians don't know that the amount of money spent to train these resident doctors can be chanelled into other areas cos they eat up a large chunk of the budget. Those who are aggrieved can still go and pass their consultancy training at other West African Countries or even overseas like they are threatening...........Whatever is good for the ox is good for the gander!!
i would assume you are intelligent ( an i use the word freely) so i would not start abusing someone so early in the morning. use the internet next time.

in USA, the American government established Medicare.

Medicare funds the vast majority
of residency training in the US.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medicare_(United_States)

in UK, Governmrnt funds residency training

Health › Ebola Patients Abandoned, Health Team Down Tools by Leopantro(op): 5:07am On Aug 18, 2014
Several doctors, nurses and other health workers who walked away from an Ebola treatment center, Yaba, Lagos, Friday has said that they quit because of what they described as the lack-luster attitude of the country’s health officials to the plight of Ebola patients sequestered at the Center for Infectious Disease Control in Yaba

According to reports from SaharaReporters members of medical teams sent to Nigeria by the World Health Organization and Doctors Without Borders had become so frustrated by the Federal government’s inept response to the Ebola outbreak that they are also threatening to quit, unless the government’s attitude changes dramatically.

It was also gathered that before Ebola patients were moved three days ago to a better facility next door, they were housed in a dilapidated and abandoned building at the center.

According to the health workers, it took complaints by families of the victims of Ebola to reporters to force the hands of the government to move the patients to a cleaner, more humane facility.

A source who spoke with the publication said the former facility where patients had been kept had no functioning water supply and no air-conditioning.

“The families of patients had to cater for them and pay for some drugs and oxygen, even though the Nigerian government claimed to have released more than N1.9 billion for treatment of Ebola victims,” one doctor alleged.

While other insiders confirmed that there were now seven cases of Ebola patients at the facility with one victim discharged yesterday after fully recovering from the disease. They added that three of the patients were also showing steady improvement while three were still struggling.

One of the volunteers who quit on Friiday said the Nigerian government had done little or nothing to cater for consultants and volunteers who were battling the deadly virus. “These consultants and volunteers were not housed, they were not fed, and they were not provided with transportation to enable them to continue working on site,” said a doctor.

The medical source added, “Because of the level of exposure of volunteers and physicians managing Ebola patients, they ought to be housed near the facility and moved around in a special vehicle to and from the center.” But the doctors often return home to their families and had to disinfect their homes on their own.
he sources revealed that only seven Nigerian doctors were on ground at the center as opposed to 20 needed to take on the challenge of treating and managing Ebola. The Nigerian doctors and nurses are being led and trained by an eight-member team of physicians from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Doctors Without Borders.

Our sources said the expatriate medical experts were also threatening to leave, citing the Nigerian government’s failure to recognize the seriousness of the Ebola disease. For example, Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, had not come near the any of the Ebola victims or given adequate assistance to the medical teams battling the deadly virus.

Instead, the minister struck a deal to accept Nano Silver solutions to treat Ebola from a yet to be named “Diaspora Nigerian” who the minister claims “invented” Nano Silver.

The US Food and Drugs Administration has stated that the Nano Silver solution being paraded in Nigeria as a cure for Ebola is classified as a pesticide.

The minister in Lagos yesterday said Nigeria has now abandoned the use of Nano Silver donated by the unnamed Nigeria because an independent assessment shows Nano Silver can’t treat Ebola.

One irate volunteer told SaharaReporters that the minister’s acceptance of an untested drug and his nomination of a notorious former INEC chairman, Maurice Iwu to a committee to cure Ebola was baffling. “The solutions could not have been accepted and used to treat Ebola patients in Yaba because the WHO has also directed that [the Nano Silver ] are unsafe for treating Ebola, but I am not surprised about the minister’s behavior considering that he nominated Prof. Iwu, a serial lier who earlier claimed bitter cola could cure Ebola” said the medical volunteer.

The source said doctors at the center were currently treating patients to combat high fevers. “We’re also rehydrating the patients and managing other symptoms as they present themselves,” the source said.

On the prospect of containing the spread of the virus in Nigeria, one of the consultants said Nigerians should realize that they are on their own. “Health authorities in Nigeria are not doing much to help anyone beyond propaganda,” he said in an angry tone.

The source disclosed that the Lagos State Commissioner of Health came near the treatment center yesterday. “He stood far away from the center where patients are being treated. He ran back and quickly went on air to claim that he had visited the victims, a claim that was a blatant lie,” our source said.

Health › we Didn’t Sack Resident Doctors; We Only Suspended Them’, The Federal Government by Leopantro(op): 9:21pm On Aug 17, 2014
Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Nwachukwu, has said the 16,000 resident Doctors who were reported as having been fired last week by the Federal health authorities, were only on suspension as the Federal Government mulls better ways to improve the healthcare sector.

“I believe the suspension is only temporary, the government is looking at how the healthcare system can be improved. But please, note that the suspension is just for only federal-owned hospitals, it is not extended to other state hospitals,” the Health Minister said.

On claims by doctors that the health insurance scheme the federal government promised was yet to be provided, Chukwu said the federal government had not begun the issuance of the insurance policy but that the Lagos State government had commenced the issuance of theirs.

“We are still working on the paper work. When it is ready we would definitely give it out. But we still need more volunteers, as health workers are little and they can’t handle the job alone,” he said.

FDA Issued Confidential Warning
Against Nigerian Health Minister,

Spreading Rumours Of False

--Attorney Patryk Utulu
The W.H.O. and American FDA
Have Issued Joint Statement
That:
(1) Nigerian Doctor rumoured to

(2) U.S. FDA warned U.S. firms

(3) W.H.O./FDA issued
“Confidential NOTICE” to
Nigerian Health Minister,

Ebola cure." (WHO threatened to
block Health Minister’s
accreditation if he spread false
rumours again)
(4) W.H.O. affirmed its ruling
this week that the experimental
drug, ZMapp, can be used on
Ebola victims where available.
WHO stated categorically that
ZMapp is NOT a cure for Ebola
and that EBOLA HAS NO CURE.
WHO’s “Confidential Notice”
condemned Mr. Chukwu as
“irresponsible” for saying that
unidentified Nigerian scientist
living overseas had arranged for
Nigeria to get experimental
medicine. Chukwu identified it as
"NanoSilver,” a supplement
offered U.S. firm, Natural
Solutions Foundation, NSF.
FURTHER, THE WORLD HEALTH

(1): NanoSilver is NOT accredited

(2): NanoSilver is for sale on a
website along with India Hemp
(marijuana) oil, ear candles, and

(4): On July 20, 2014, NSF’s
medical director, Dr. Rima E.

Presidents of Guinea, Liberia,
Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Ghana
claiming that NanoSilver cured
Ebola. Dr. Libow claimed to have
addressed 47 African health
ministers at a 2007 conference
and to be in touch with West
African governments and their
advisers. W.H.O. said THESE
CLAIMS ARE FALSE. Dr. Laibow
HAS NEVER BEEN TO AFRICA.
(5): The New York Times
repeatedly has tried to contact
Dr. Laibow who claimed that her
drug cured Nigerian doctor but
Dr. Laibow is nowhere to be
seen. Agents of the U.S. FDA are
hunting for her.
(6): Assistant Director of W.H.O.,
Dr. Marie-Paule Kieny, said
fraudsters are targeting African
nations “AND SUCCEEDING
BECAUSE OF LARGE NUMBER OF
RELIGIOUS PEOPLE ANXIOUS TO
CLAIM MIRACLE HEALING.”
(7): FDA’s Dr. Caplan said the
same people who marketed fake
HIV cure-drugs to Africans for 30
years are now marketing fake
Ebola cure to Africans “BECAUSE

NEGLECT OF THE EBOLA
PATIENTS: THE WORST THAT WE
FEARED HAPPENED:
When I speak out against the
Nigerian Government, many
people, particularly the
supporters of the government,
accuse me of all manner of evil.
They think they love Nigeria
better than I do. But the fact is
that I have been right. Nigerian
Government is the worst on
earth. It is made up of criminals
and incompetent fools from top
to bottom. I hate to have to
speak of them like this. But I
cannot run away from the truth.
Nigerian Government officials
are the most corrupt. They are
the most ignorant. They do not
care about their country. They
do not care about their people.
Openly they speak of one
Nigeria and patriotism. But
behind, they work so hard to
destroy the country. Even on
common things like fighting
Ebola, they are uselessly unable
to perform the basic things.
They quickly announced the
allocation of 1.9 Billion Naira,
which they have earmarked to
embezzle. Those who would use
that money to buy mansions in
Europe and America already
know themselves.
So, they abandoned our Ebola
patients to die. They went to
televisions and spoke nonsense.
But in fact, they never cared
about the patients. No oxygen
canisters. No basic medication
and equipments that WHO has
recommended. Indeed, Nigerian
Government isolated the Ebola
patients for the purpose of
finishing them up. It is mind
bugging to face up to the
exceptional neglect these
patients have suffered. To get a
better picture, consider the
following statements from Mr.
John Okeiyi Kalu (JOK) who
stayed in touch with an Ebola
patient in isolation till the last.
JOK wrote:
"My basic conclusion is that
Nigeria and the world failed
Justina. She (Justina Ejelonu,
one of the nurses) could have
lived if all that was required at
the quarantine place was
provided. Her fiancé shares my
view and sent this to me a while
ago: "Am presently at the
hospital to get her death
certificate. Am angry n will do
what Justina will do for me if its
me. These pple are being
brought here to die n that's all
but I can't watch it.""
…………..
"I was on the phone with the
fiancé who stopped over
yesterday morning at the
market to buy a few things
Justina will need. We mapped
out our plan on what to do that
day, including getting a list of
essential drugs from the WHO
staff so we can urgently procure
them and also inform the
authorities that those items are
not available. When he arrived
at the hospital to deliver what
he bought and await Yako's
arrival with the new oxygen
canister, he sent me this
initially confusing message "my
brother Obioma is gone""
……………..
"Due to the work we did quietly
without rabble rousing, the
nation is now focused on the
state of the quarantine facility.
Relatives of patints have found
their voices and are protesting.
The media is focusing on details
like why there is no oxygen,
infusion and other medical
supplies there. We have given
what information we have to
them. As you now know, we got
3 media people to hear directly
from Justina. 2 of them have
published already and the 3rd
one is so angry that I am
"scared" of what he will publish
this saturday in his feature
story."
Those who defend Nigeria or
Nigerian Government really has
to understand that they are
defending the worst regime on
earth. They are defending idiots
and crooks. It is not about
political parties. I don't support
any. I don't care who is in
power. What matters is what do
they do for the people of this
country? How could they allow
our citizens die like chicken?
Even Guinea and Sierra Leone
and Liberia have all done better
than the big-for-nothing
Nigeria.

I had an illness, which I never had before. But I couldn't afford to go to a doctor for a whole month, so suffered, as in truly suffered. Till I told Pharmacist A, who screamed I should head to the hospital asap.

A nurse came, took N15,000 equivalent from me, filled out my history, the doctor came and in a bored voice, without doing a single physical exam, started asking me if I had HIV, Herpes, this STI or that. While I wept.

Doctor B heard what happened to me and sent me to another clinic. Filled with wonderful people, who ran tests and answered his questions via email. We got a diagnosis and I left healed. I paid nothing.

That story happened in the US. That bored doctor charged me over a $100 and assumed my black skin meant I was a crackhead, streetgirl and didn't bother treating me, just assumed I had some funky disease. The pharmacist A and doctor B were living in Nigeria, and insisted (over the phone and through emails) that I get better healthcare. They found me a free clinic and the nurses there were willing to listen and discuss my case with them, because I was so weak and tired and afraid by then.

So yes, you have lousy doctors in Nigeria, yet you have doctors in this Nigeria, better than the ones in the US. If they had good facilities, we wouldn't have half-baked doctors. Stop insulting them, demand your govt give them everything then demand the absolute best from doctors. Because then it will be your right.

Public healthcare is usually not great, ask people who have access to NHS in the UK. But it is still the first and best line of defence any country has. I got a lousy doctor in the US because my health coverage (made for profit) didn't cover me getting a doctor who gave a d.amn. I got fantastic treatment from people who ran free clinics. So I will always be in support of public healthcare. And I support doctors, so that if we give them what they want, we can shout at them for not performing.

You want them to all resume with no Hazmat suits, don't you know the greatest carriers of an infectious viral disease is medical staff and close family and friends? SMH.
you are wasting your time trying to enlighten Nigerians. they are ready to bathe with salt and kerosene because they got a phone call that evil spirits would be released by 3am.

considering that most of the writers here went to university, have a degree and could see nothing about bathing with salt last week goes to show that Nigerians get what they deserve. there is no point correcting such a group.

wonder what would happen if boko harem detonates multiple bombs in different cities in Nigeria right now. who will treat the casualties?

that means medical students cannot graduate to become doctors. Medical consultants automatically become medical officers because it's the training that gives the title. Medical governing bodies become redundant thus nobody to report to so malpractise becomes common place.

GOODLUCK TO ME, GOODLUCK TO YOU. GOODLUCK TO EVERYBODY........

You will need it.

Rewarding negligence and

Health › Forced To Test Ebola Patients, 4 Indian Doctors Want Out by Leopantro(op): 10:06pm On Aug 11, 2014
Four Indian doctors in Nigeria have said they are being forced to treat Ebola patients against their will. They also charged their employers with taking away their passports to ensure that the doctors couldn’t leave the country.

The doctors – Yogesh Chandra, Dinesh Kumar, Hemant Jingar, and Kapil Chouhan – said they were threatened to not leave Primus Hospital in the Nigerian capital Abuja. With the virus spreading across the country, the doctors feared for their lives. They spoke to Hindustan – a sister concern of HT – over phone, email and Whatsapp.

We haven’t been provided with any security kits. Our passports have been impounded. When we spoke to Indian high commission, we were asked to come to the mission. But we were stopped by guards from leaving the hospital”, said Chouhan.

He added that the Indian doctors were forced to work since local physicians – who were on a strike – refused to come back to work when the Ebola epidemic broke out.

Government sources, however, told HT that following the intervention of the Indian mission in Nigeria, the doctors have agreed to work in the hospital for a few more days and then leave the country.

Around 961 people have died till August 8 from a total of 1,779 cases in the Ebola outbreak that has hit west Africa, says data from the World Health Organisation (WHO). In the four countries affected so far, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria, the virus has infected nearly 150 healthcare workers, killing around 80 of them.

Though Nigerians authorities claimed there were no Ebola cases in Abuja, Dinesh Kumar’s wife Smita alleged that patients from Lagos – which has registered 10 Ebola cases and two deaths – were admitted at the hospital.

The CEO of Primus Super Speciality Hospital India Dr ND Khurana, however, appeared to not agree with the demands of the four doctors. “We are in touch with our Abuja branch. These doctors are afraid of contracting the dreaded disease but it is against medical morality. One doctor has left the service, which will be treated as impropriety,” he said.

But Dr Narendra Saini, secretary of the Indian Medical Association, countered Khurana, arguing that a doctor’s personal choice should dictate if they want to work in a particular country.
