PoliticsRe: Buhari's Boko Haram Delusion-Huffington Post by LightofEarendil: 8:51am On Mar 20, 2016
After reading this post, I knew this can't probably be written by a foreign journalist but by someone seemed caught up in the general APC - PDP e-war and most likely will be a Nigerian. I was right.

Looks like these fuel is one important commodity for these BH guys. They must surely be getting from somewhere. This is a path the security team can explore. Starve them of supply, lure them into desperately looking for it in the open, mount surveillance on possible suppliers and sources for fuel and keep nabbing them as they come out.

PoliticsRe: Buhari Behind SSS’ Invasion Of Ekiti Assembly – Lawmakers by LightofEarendil: 9:23am On Mar 11, 2016
Hmmm. My dear state. There is fire on the mountain at home and nobody seems to be bothered.
Our government has essential turned an opposition party or social activist rather than face their primary business of governing the State.
The State has serious issues that need focus and creative solutions and all these distractions are just waste of time. Allocation have dwindled, salaries not being paid, State economy biting hard and all that. Yet our government is more or less caught up in a struggle with the Federal Government. Over what? Are they fighting for us or their interest and position.
Now that the current crude oil price has exposed our State Governments, they all seemed confused on what to do. I believe this is the best time to really know who are the real leaders in this dispensation. If they can be faithful in little, I am sure they will be qualified to have more committed into their hands.
PoliticsRe: Buhari Lied, Boko Haram Still Holds Territory In Nigeria - US Commander by LightofEarendil: 7:22am On Mar 11, 2016
The truth is that Book Haram will still be hiding out in some pockets of location in the NE but that does not mean they hold territories. When they did, we saw how they flaunted it and hoisted flags here and there. What they probably have now are hideouts and should not be termed territory except the definition of territory have changed.

I expect the Nigerian Military to respond to the US officer and clear the air. Strange also that the US army man offer less info to back up his claim compared to that of Somalia AlShabab.

PoliticsRe: What Nigeria Must Learn From The Death Of James Ocholi SAN - CramJones by LightofEarendil: 8:52am On Mar 07, 2016
I think a good lesson to learn here is to pay attention to our cars, especially tires and to drive at a controlled speed. While we wait and push the government to fix the road and provide other services. There are things only we can do for ourselves.

There are already enough dangers on our road than for us to add more complication. Obeying simple car safety rules is also critical so that if an accident happens, we would have at least reduced the chance of death as much as we can.

I learn this from a Road Safety officer. The higher your speed, the higher the chance of death. 110km/h is the most reasonable to maintain. When travelling I always maintain a 110km/h speed no matter how smooth and clear the road is. I leave nothing to chance.

Also, using a belt is a must! As much as possible, avoid situations where you or anyone have to not use the seat belt.

Lastly, patience and self-restrain is key.

Praising people for doing their job encourages mediocrity in governance. Praise people who go above and beyond the call of duty or excel in their role as govt officials, not people who are just doing their job, no more no less. This is not the military era, if you like dont do your job, you will be voted out.
Partly agree. In some cases, you don't have too as it can lead to mediocrity or laxity. In some cases, it isn't a bad idea, especially if its a case where so many have failed or have not measured up before.

Somehow life isn't just black and white, and sometimes, we have to approach issues on a one-by-one basis. In this case, I choose to commend and be hopeful. At the end, the most important thing we agree on is to see it done and for these people to truly benefit.

Srop praising people for doing what is expected of them. When someone gives his life in defense of his country, the country (Army) are not doing his family a favour by taking care of them, it's the duty/responsibility of the Country/Army.
Yes it is the least expected of the government, yet in life; there is no harm in praising people when they do what is expected of them - especially if the effort is commendable and good enough.
If it is okay to criticize people for not doing their job, I think it is fair to also praise or commend them when they do. It is all part of motivation and it should be encouraged and practiced by all relationships - at the government-citizens, boss-subordinates, husband-wife levels, etc.

At least this is an area my former boss and my wife has been pressing me to work on - that I should not take everything for granted.

Good. I hope they equally set up a way this could be effectively supervised and monitored on both the short and long-term basis.
Also, it should be made hassle and stress free. Beneficiaries should not have to beg and lobby to access this. Having sacrificed their breadwinner to ensure the stability and security of the country, the government owe them this at the very least.
PoliticsRe: National Assembly Postpones Budget Passing Indefinitely by LightofEarendil: 8:27am On Feb 10, 2016
Good. Let the right thing be done.

Let Buhari tender an apology to the nation for this embarrassments. Let them explain why this happened and let penalty be exercised as appropriate and let us do the right thing and just move on.

No one is above mistake, not owing up to your mistakes is as grave as beating others on their heads because of their mistakes.

And while issues at the FG are playing out, let people turn their attention to their respective states. Or are they not part of Government.

Pity we leave the ones that can directly influence our lives alone and spend our energy on the FG. And those guys just love it the way it is.

I pray our government succeed to the glory of God and blessing of all Nigerians.

One thing is for sure, this country will be great again.

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions,
and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
For kings, and for all that are in authority;
that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour"

PoliticsRe: Okowa Budgets N25Billion To Maintain State House by LightofEarendil: 8:13am On Feb 10, 2016
While most people are fixated on the FG, the state executives are left unaccountable and alone to plunder the state coffers as will.
The State Assemblies are just bunch of rubber stamps to State Governors with no mind or vision of their own.
If only those that spend their time daily close-monitoring the FG will pay such attention to State and Local governance, Nigeria will be better than this.
That is why no matter how many group you break Nigeria into, things will not change until we change ourselves and our values.

This is not bad.

There were times in my course of work that I had deeply wished I could speak French.

There were even opportunities for international career advancement and exposure that I missed because there were others who stood better chances because they speak both English and French.

Those who wish to especially a pursue career with international donor organizations and NGOs with presence in different African countries should take note.

This protest is many years late.

Read about Dariye fighting against standing trail for corruption for 8 years ( since 2007) until the Supreme Court recently ruled that he should go and stand trial.
How can a trial be held for that long and it has not even begun!

It is the judiciary that needs to save itself.

I understand Oyegun's statement. Even though we are architects of our own predicament, yet God is able to make all things work together for our good.
He will use anyone and anybody, because the hearts of Kings are in His hands and He rules in the affairs of men.
God is in control in Nigeria. And no matter what some may say, things will get better. May take time, but He will do it. The darkest time of the nights always precedes the dawn of a new day.

Ever since I started school, my teachers taught me that our country was “rich” because we had many minerals, and we’d recite the list of minerals. By the time I finished secondary school, I not only knew my country was “rich,” but that Africa itself was “rich” because we had so many natural resources.

Even though I didn’t study geology, I could almost tell you where all these precious minerals and other resources were found: oil, diamonds, platinum, gold, copper… in places like Congo, there were names of some things I couldn’t even pronounce.

__Yes, Africa is so rich!!!

As a young student, if I thought about what the global buyers of Africa’s natural resources then did with them, it was only ever a superficial thought. But I soon realized something didn’t add up…

__Sometimes it almost seemed that the “richer” a country, the poorer the people! But how could this be?

“1+1=2″! My primary school teacher drummed it into my head, right?

Then I got to secondary school and one day the teacher came in and said, “You know, there are situations when 1+1 does not always add up to 2.” ?!

“I’m here to talk about mathematics,” the teacher said. “It’s time to put away the arithmetic; this is senior school!”

“Senior school!”

I didn’t end my study of mathematics in secondary school. I also studied it at university where I majored in engineering.

What was it the Apostle Paul said about putting away childish things?!

Let me return to the wealth of our nations: I left university in the early 1980’s. In those days, it was not China that was rising into an economic giant, it was Japan! It was rising and overtaking every European country, until Japan was second only to America… It was so spectacular!

I first met a Japanese person when I was in my twenties and already working, yet I read every single book I could find about their prowess.

“Tell me about the minerals of your country?” I asked my Japanese friend.

“We have no minerals to talk of,” he said emphatically and proudly.

“What do you mean you have no minerals?”

As we talked about the Japanese rise, I was reminded of my lessons in mathematics!

And so I had discovered it was possible for a nation to be “rich” without minerals!

“We buy your minerals as cheaply as we can, and then we turn them into high-value products.”

“You mean you exploit us?”

“That’s not the way we see it. After all, what would you do with them if we didn’t buy them? Do you know what we do with your platinum or your oil?”

Then he added:

# “Our wealth creation model as a nation is not based on raw materials and minerals.”

“WEALTH CREATION MODEL?” What do you mean “WEALTH CREATION MODELhuh

Deeply troubled (even insulted) initially, I knew there was something more to learn if I avoided becoming emotional. The conclusions I reached changed the way I look at wealth, and totally empowered me. It changed my mindset.

The Tentmaker once said that our greatest battle is always in our minds… changing the way see things, particularly if we have held on to a certain perspective for a long time.

I hope it will do the same for you.

See my next post.

To be continued...

PoliticsRe: Senator Uche Ekwunife Decamps To APC by LightofEarendil: 8:25pm On Jan 08, 2016
Just shows you the mind of an average Politician. If many of the Politicians clamining PDP or APC ever perceived that their positions are under threat or stand a high chance of losing, they will all look around for the next best deal and decamp in a twinkle of an eye. No principles, only self-interest and self preservation.
And we the people? Well, we are or have made ourselves pawns in their political chess game.

Reminds me of Michael Jackson's song - they don't really care about us...

The best way to handle such politicians is to beat them in their own game. We just need to put our own interest before theirs and negotiate the best deal for ourselves through our votes, not giving a damn about their Party affiliation knowing it means nothing to them too. Party affiliation is only one of their bargaining chips.

We only need to look at their character and history, weigh our alternatives and go for the best deal without sacrificing our own respect and honor, or we won't be any better than they are.

CareerRe: Possible Career Path For A Psychology Graduate. by LightofEarendil: 7:49pm On Jan 03, 2016
blaze612:
Pls, what are the professional courses advisable for a psychology graduate
Like someone wrote, you can pursue an academic or a professional path. However, an academic path gives you the opportunity to become a lecturer or a consultant in whatever field of psychology you pursue. There are several fields which some have also listed - education, organizational, clinical, forensic, sport, etc.

As a professional, you can basically pursue a career in human resource management and related fields.
However, be ready to do a Masters because without it, you cannot specialize and ultimately be considered a specialist.

I had my first and second degree in Psychology with specialization in Social and Personality psychology. I have worked for years in a consulting firm that specialized in training and social developmental research. Research is something any Psychologist and social scientist should particularly be adept in. I have also been involved HRM especially in the area of job recruitment, selection and placement.

My career and involvement has cut across the private and public sector with focus on social development projects. As a result, I have had experience working as a consultant on several World Bank, ADB and other internationally-supported or funded projects in Nigeria.

Over the years, I have consulted and still consult for federal and state government ministries and agencies and for the World Bank. My expertise include social research, capacity building, and project management. Sectors involved include education, health aagriculture amongst others. I currently float a consulting firm of my own. For privacy reason, I cannot go into more detail than I have shared.

Did I know or plan for these when I was working towards admission into the university? No. I intended studying Economics but somehow ended up with Psychology.
However, once admitted into this course, I sought information on its prospect and got to embrace it eventually. The truth is you have a lot of options when you study this course depending on your dreams and also your exposure and contacts along the way. A lot of people are ignorant of its prospect (I was too before) but believe me, it has a lot.

Finally, should you wish to take this course, please take the research aspect very seriously as you should with any social science course.

Nigeria youth will never learn. This write up smells of an hack job miles away. Who sends these people. Politicians, Lawyers and journalists have all been lying from the beginning of time. Asking us to believe one and doubt the others is simply a fools errand.
Let the wise judge from all that is happening and sift for the truth. As for me, I'm inclined to believe the journalists at this point, since events in the past weeks show that some people are doing a lot of talking. No one is sure about Dasuki's role yet because I cannot remember reading any direct quotation from him on this matter.
Anyway, its their problem, they stole and got caught. They should not go unpunished. Everyday is for the thief, one day for the owner. Everyone's time will come, whether APC or PDP. The evil men do will live after them.

The type of corruption in Nigeria can only be from Nigeria. Nowhere else in the world can ours take place and the country not become FAILED STATE completely.
SLS captured it well when he said our type of corruption is the worst in the whole world because it's pure stealing.

I have come to realize that the biggest problem in Nigeria is not corruption per se. It is the attitude of the majority of us who are victims of corruption towards those who have pauperized them and future of their unborn grand children. Many of victims of corruption, who complain hourly about poor state of things, are sadly same set of people who defend their oppressors with the last drop of blood in them.

It's very sad that democracy has not helped Nigeria as we thought. It has instead made people to get away with impunity upon impunity.
You are right to a degree. Its sometimes pathetic reading on Nairaland and seeing the oppressed supporting their oppressor rather than demand for good governance.

'Zero-Based Budgeting - ZBB' A method of budgeting in which all expenses must be justified for each new period. Zero-based budgeting starts from a "zero base" and every function within an organization is analyzed for its needs and costs.
Isn't it amazing that no one is really discussing the practicality and potential challenges of implementing a zero-based budgeting. All you see here are young people comfortable with just abusing themselves and arguing along party lines.
Sometimes I wished there are sections here on Nairaland or elsewhere where we can all have great and refreshing debates and where decorum is strongly enforced.

APC has everything to lose if they attempt this. I doubt this is an APC thing. Rather, PDP has a lot to gain if this happens. For being the party in power for something like this to happen is a bad record and reputation they may never be free from. They may end up losing every election in Nigeria in coming months and years. People may not like Jonathan as a President, but love him as a person.
Also, I believe that Jonathan's testimony and exposure alone can send so many PDP guys to jail or political demise.
I hope the truth comes out. And I hope our security team realize that the President will need an extra security as it seems some crazy people are getting crazy ideas.
PoliticsRe: FFK Blasts Buhari For Shaking The Queen But Refused To Shake Female Ministers by LightofEarendil: 4:19pm On Nov 30, 2015
When I started working on some internationally-supported development projects across several states in Nigeria, one of the things I had to learn is to know enough of the practices and culture of people I work with and respect their positions in this regard.
I remember shaking married Muslim women is one of them. It's quite embarrassing at times meeting people and offering handshake and watch them ignore it, albeit respectfully. But it shows that you did not do your homework well or you are inexperienced at that level.
Now I have learned when and to whom to offer an handshake and to whom not to offer.
I also know the signs to look for.
It is all about etiquette.
The situations sometimes will vary. I have had instance when a married Muslim who wears short hijab will not take an handshake from you but will take it from white foreigners in your delegate.
Should that be an issue - No, if you do not make it one. They too are trying to find a balance. They expect you as a fellow countryman to know and respect their position, while they make some exception for the foreign guests/visitors.
Some may not even take an handshake from anyone. But trust some of the foreigners too, they do their homework and would not try to offer an handshake once they know your practice.
FFK and others just raising dusts on this are the ones who need to learn this It is not everything that is politics.

It's is unfortunate but it seems sugarbelly has an history that dated before her time with Audu's son.
She did not just act like a typical 17 years old would. Probably has experienced some abuse before that age. Her mum also has a lot of explanation to make as it seems she knew of her daughter's relationship with Mustapha. To even give your daughter a 12am curfew at 17 speaks volume of who she might be.
This is a tragic case that is not a good poster for all girls out there who genuinely has been victims of rape and who need people to stand up for them. There have been a bit of them in the news recently and none received this kind of attention.
Is it because a rich and powerful family is not involved? Maybe we need to check out ourselves and if we would have give this same attention has the case involved the son of a nobody.

As it stands, this looks like a case of moral gone to the wind and not a legal one. That is why this may end up being only fought on social media and not the courts.
