Following the orders by the Federal Government, urging all universities to re-open, the Senate of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) Tuesday sacked all academic staff with immediate effect. The Federal Government had through the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike had vow to sack any lecturer who fails to return to class within seven days, and had directed vice-chancellors of federal universities that are currently on strike to immediately re-open for academic and allied activities. The Public Relations Officers (PRO) of the institution, Mr Chike Ezenwa, speaking with the Nigerian Tribune in Owerri, said the senate of the university had declared all the positions of academic staff in the institution, adding that they would be advertised starting from Monday, December 2. The senate said it had already compiled the list of vacant positions in the school. The school authority have urged those willing to resume would be adequately protected. Education Minister, Wike had said,“All Vice-chancellors of Federal Universities that are on strike should immediately reopen for academic and allied activities as directed by their Pro-Chancellors. Vice-Chancellors should ensure that staff who resume for work are provided with the enabling environment for academic and allied activities. Though the order said any academic staff who fails to resume on or before December 4, 2013, automatically ceases to be staff of the institution and vice-chancellors are also directed to advertise vacancies (internal and external) in their institutions. One wonders why the FUTO order comes a day to government’s deadline.. Meanwhile the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos has also said the institution resumes Wednesday in-line with government’s directives but the ASUU leadership is not backing down, vows to continue strike. http://newswirengr.com/2013/12/03/ASUU-strike-federal-university-of-technology-sacks-academic-staff/? http://dailytrust.info/index.php/top-stories/11444-ASUU-strike-futo-sacks-lecturers

World AIDS Day: A Poem On HIV, The unhired killer The piece is written by Dr. Soyombo Ayomikun Enjoy! I was on a mission to a village And as I settled down someone else came in making the town crier strike his gong Screaming that ‘Adaobi approaches’ in high decibels Following which a scampering began Mothers gathered their children inside the huts hastily Husbands dashed away leaving their kegs of palmwine & bushmeat In hushed tones I was later told all hid because of Adaobi’s terrible disease She had been infected with HIV; the unhired killer Mama suddenly started becoming all bones Her once full frame speedily being shed into the winds Colourful robes that once hugged her body gradually became ill-fitting With each passing day she became frail and weak On checking her blood the doctors announced That the faceless virus had come to stay We didn’t ask for a battle but now has been challenged to a war By HIV; the unhired killer The little girl got rushed into the emergency ward After the bestiality of an untamed man ripped her hymen Confused she looked into her doctor’s eyes seeking answers To why everyone around her was in tears With the animal that devoured her innocence already behind bars It seemed like the god of vengeance was rising for her cause But then on checking her blood resident there was HIV; the unhired killer In exchange for a sublime rare pleasure Condom,or whatever it is named, the young man ripped apart Little did he know that as the rubber was thorn so also were his dreams Thoughtlessly he consummated his passions with the goddess from the red district Several months passed drowning the reality of a viral reprisal But then after a while tuberculous cough sneaked into his lungs On finally landing in the hospital his blood was checked Staring back at his caregivers was HIV; the unhired killer The disease neither flies through the winds nor crawl beneath the waters Rather it follows a path from one infected soul to the next Blooming into a wicked battalion right within infected blood All at the end to raze down the defences of its prey Till other opportunistic infections get empowered to kill Diseases that usually will not get recognition And as the minnows tear the spirit apart from the body the virus gladly sits watching What a show of horror by HIV; the unhired killer Please let us not desert whoever is a carrier They can without fear be cuddled & even invited over for dinner The wicked virus is powerless with mere physical contact Finding strength to live mostly when blood mixes with blood & through sexual intercourse For you pregnant mothers confirmed infected shed no tears Together with your jewels there’s help for you beneath the eyes of a specialist Zero transmission & Zero discrimination is the key To save our world from HIV; the unhired killer To win this battle all must arise Either to get screened or embrace the known status Even though living together as a family share no sharps If too young to swallow the forbidden fruit don’t simulate sex For passions wildly raging may the act be with a protection And all for sanity to reign hold on tightly to your partner Little precautions will at the end yield us the victory Over HIV; the unhired killer N.B. : the name mentioned in this article is fictitious and does not refer to any particular person, dead or alive. |
