@OP I love your writing style, it's awesome. I encourage you to write more stories am a fan already.

But you must know that this will not end well. I don't blame you but I think the best thing you can do for yourself right now is to stop. You need more self restraints with this kinda stuff.

By the way, the Dude being military should be enough warning.

But please tell us if you plan to continue on this path so that I will keep watch on news from Gombe or somewhere in the north of a murder-suicide by a newly married young military officer.

Bro I don't think it will be that easy to forget about her. Strange as it sounds getting angry when you think of the incident is a good thing, it means you still care deeply about her, so why not give it a chance: give some time.

Also, unless I miss read, the affair was before you guys started dating so it doesn't count: any other chic you meet later is likely (high probability) to have had sex before you hook up.

Finally, you guys really need to meet and discuss this issue honestly and openly if your relationship is to make sense, its not healthy to have this casting a dark cloud on you both.

Life is too short, when you find something or someone that could make you happy, fight for it (or not).

Anyways what do I know. Goodluck

I don't mean to pry into your knowledge or experience but there are so many misleading information in your posts and why I mention you, so you can perhaps check through and correct. However you have put up some right information.
First bolded : Number of active rigs does not signify growth or stagnancy in any EandP company. It's only normal for drilling activities to reduce when oil prices are low. Driliing is just one part of a field development, tho about the most expensive. The fact that there is no drilling does not mean other field development processes and appraisal aren't going on. Yes, shell has about only one active rig on Bonga main but yea, yea, number of wells that were drilled on land last year will be put into production. So, drilling does not account totally for growth.
@ second bolded: getting a field is not easy given the politics in Nigeria, getting finance may be tough but if you can present a strong case, you will. There are a lot of Nigerian independents that are doing very fine at the moment. They are getting finance, producing and drilling more wells. Seplats business is not just oil same with many of these IOc's. They have gas monetisation programs i.e Seplats ohaji amukpe gas project and so many. Another reason why I said drilling does not equal growth totally.
@ 3rd bolded: there are different kind of wells drilled at different times in the life of a well. First is exploratory- to confirm the presence of oil or gas and possibly amount. which I think happened in the case of the fourth bolded. Then you have appraisals and development wells. The number of probable and possible reserves is very important in a company's valuation. It serves a basis to know the company"s future standing. Fields are being discovered almost every year. When you hear discovered it means there is probable presence of oil and gas and yea, there is nothing wrong in drilling a wildcat well. If you don't drill there is no way you find oil.

Very correct, but I was speaking broadly, because I know my audience. If I was talking details there are many specifics that cone into play and we can go about it forever.

I never said splat was idle or said they only depended on crude oil for revenue, just that they and plenty other companies have fields they have not developed. And I was talking relative, lemme rephrase: funding is way harder than getting the leases. For perspective it's easy to open a water company compared to funding it. You get

But we agree that we need to drill before production. We agree that a company needs to have an object to determine its function/type of business (any business or contract conducted by a company outside it's object is void CAMA) so are limited in revenue generating activities. We also agree that you need to drill first; exploratory and later appraisal to appraise a reservoir. So we are back to drilling abi. Drilling a good indication not an absolute just like GDP is an economy indicator not absolute.

Also, you may need to go through the trail to understand what my object is, I was only trying to clear up earlier statement I made.

Morning bro, just actually reading your post. My respond is just for you and a small insight into what I said earlier. Not really about this recruitment.

First, I no dey brag oo, I don't have any claim to that, just stating fact. Then when I mentioned rig number, I was referring to the number of rigs they have "hired", it was to try to show how slow operations are. When the oil prices go down, what you hear is "low rig count". The number of rigs in e&p company gives you an indication of growth, confidence in the (country's) energy sector. Low rig count means a company with large drilling department work force will have a lot of redundant workers (company men), it means less contract and thus money for the servicing companies, it may also means less chance of hiring more people because if you don't plan to increase production by increasing number of wells then why increase overhead by hiring more people. You grow by drill more wells, the building infrastructure to service them, thus other departments like processing, production and Co. Then you start generating revenue.

As for reservoir, there are so may companies out there with reservoir naa, even splat has a field they haven't touched sef. Getting field is easy, getting the finance for start drilling and production is the hard part. Infact before it was easier because oil prices were over 100 dollars per barrel and cost of producing a barrel in naija on land is about 35 dollars per barrel (i think): so it mad profit, it's like telling you to invest 35 mill and get 100 mill. So most of the marginal field guys went to banks and made this pitch and got loans at exorbitant rates knowing that bad as e bad they will make profits. And as usual they will always over shot their budget but the have a gap of around 65 dollars per barrel even an idiot will still make profits with this margin. Now imagine what happened when the price dropped to the 30s embarassed. So my bro, no person will talk about fields or whatever when talking about company value or prospects, it's possible nothing of economic value is in that well. Else you will end up like orient that dug one of they most expensive "borehole" in Anambra cheesy

As for stress, you will need to get used to some disappointed with time. In naija, you may need to be very good at disappointed cheesy it's unfortunate but that's our economy and population at play for you.

On a lighter note, this one is not stress naa. When I was hustling my first job, I did test, group interview, then another interview, then another interview then another.... Infact when they call me for the offer I didn't know and was asking the hr person whether it was another interview again. I was so happy I thought to myself I done hammer, I am made. I was thinking my life has changed, infact I started eyeing houses in VI and Ikoyi (i thought all this traveling can't be in vain naa also from the outside the company is rumored to pay millions). Well I got the offer, it was barely 100k per month. You can't imagine my emotions then, happy because I finally got a job, but sad because it missed my expectations by a mile. Infact this one small, there is the major multinational in naija, my friend passed through their recruitment and did medicals sef, they didn't give him offer because of internal approval or something but promised him. Infact to commit themselves they brought him to Lagos and lodged him in a hotel for over 4 months (hotel bill over 40k per day). The guy don plan him life finish, planing on which car to buy, trying to find wife sef. Well at the end of the 4 months or so they called him to tell him it's not possible, give some reason. It was a very hard time for him, but he is with NNPC now (NPDC).

The thing is that you will get lots of stress and plenty disappointed but don't ever let it weigh you down. Take a day go out with a friend talk, play laugh. Come tomorrow, apply for the next job till you reach where God has planned for you.

Goodluck bro

Correct @ fire If you know how the industry works, recruits don't really work on rigs... Like daily work on rig. There are various departments, well engineering and production are departments that may be involved with rigs. The rest may not really have businesses with rigs. If you truly in this industry, you will know that FID for Bonga south west is on the way, so you should expect them to recruit. I wasn't trying to brag by metioning shell's employees. I sabi dem, no mean say na me. One can know hundreds of people somewhere, the fact remains it is not you. I only wanted to point the fact that they have bench marks and if you meet up, you can get it but that they will compromise their standards to go for the "available" then you need to do your research again. It's always on merit. Like someone rightly said, regret mails coming in at the moment is being sent by a Robot and that's because they have set a bench mark for every of the test that has been taken. I mentioned foreign degree because you mentioned Mckinsey and GE. Yes, Mckinsey have got preference for those degrees and MBA

this is the only thing I'd go with it. There are so many flaws in your post. Shell like many oil companies is tough to get in... do your research again. It may not be tough if you know how to play your way round the recruiting exercise and a few network. But for so many of you on this thread right now, it is. Like I said, all companies have their bench marks. The Edison stuff you mentioned is not just peculiar to Nigeria, GE's standard is rare. GE is bigger than shell so you expect a tougher standard and considering the kind of job they do same with Mckinsey. The consulting firms prefer foreign degrees and certification as it is more theoritical. Like I told you, Talents are not scare in Nigeria. That makes the competition tougher. There are individuals that are Nigerians in Nigeria that qualify for same edison program. Ask your friend he will tell you. Yes, shell will always need staff but it seems you are not familiar with the oil industry. Over the past 3 years due to the slump in oil price, recruiting has slowed, lay offs has been more. Shell is still laying off. Right now, the oil industry is less of attraction and more of retention. I will always commend shell for their openess as compared to other IOC's. I know about 5 folks that got into shell at entry level between 2013 and 2015. Mobil's last entry level was 2013 but people have been coming in same with Total, worst is AGIP. You mentioned NOGIC, Of course no company recruits foreigners at entry level.

Damn! I made a mistake undecided

don't be too sure. This is Nigeria, talents are not scarce. For every bench mark for most graduate position, there will be nothing less than 200 candidate that will fit in. @ second bolded, you re advertise. In countries where talents are a bit scare and have high bench marks, positions as this are left open for close to a year. Thats to tell you, they have their standards. Employers have their bench marks, they don't just go for the available.

Fair, but remember I was painting a scenario. Also, shell is not that hard to get into and their recruitment is not so difficult compare to some companies. In addition, shell is a major coy that will always have a robust system, they need the staff, they need them to be Nigerians (NOGICDA) and their staff turn over is quite high; they don't have the luxury of being very selective. Especially now that they are using a new recruitment process: they don't have precedence for setting a comfortable benchmark.

I will paint 2 scenario using real life coys that have standards to keep for you:

GE is such coy, my friend works there in their US branch and they would love to recruit Nigerians more regularly but they did their research and concluded that our education system is "Junk". So they don't offer some of their best programs on Naija like their Edison program but they recruit once in a while and prefer experienced. Infact there was a time they were looking for graduate with GRE scores so that they can sponsor their higher education in US. That's a company with standards that's trying to adapt to their environment.

McKinsey and company on the other have standards they are not willing to compromise on. They invite you for their PST (although their ADH uses shl). They have a strict cut off mark, meet it or get a reject, after which you will need to survive a serious of interviews (case studies and Co, they even offer you tutorials before these interview, gives you an idea how difficult they are). Infact, their recruitment process is so hard that they hire less than one percent of the applications they receive. You have a better chance getting into stanford or Harvard mba program.

In summary, I don't believe their is such a strict benchmark else people would have received and instant rejection minutes after their cognitive test. They wouldn't have even bothered allowing you clog their severs with you plenty stories about why we want plenty more....oh sorry I mean why we want to work for shell grin

Caveat: Abeg no reference anything above ooo, na some facts mixed with observations and some assumptions.

I chose to disagree. I think they have benchmark. Once one doesn't meet the benchmark for the test & probably the work-style & interview , it's regret mail straight. Then after the whole test period, they will now be screening people out based on CV, Work-style, skills, interview & the likes

Possible, but the tricky thing about bench mark is that there is a rare possibly that no one meets your criteria or you end up with too few people to meet your target (for example they may have a quota for female intake or people of Niger Delta origin and they end up with no one from these criteria meeting this benchmark). The problem is when you are too quick to send reject and then later realize you don't have anything to work with, then what next?

HR are always flexible and understand playing with numbers and probability. They also understand that these test and accessment are not perfect so they would rather have 10 people that almost meet their criteria interview for 2 positions than just 3 people to work with. The key thing is making sure you have enough candidate else you run into problems.

Well, all of this is just conjecture, it's very possible I am wrong.

My father owns d land and everything in it...shell or no shell...He'll provide a better one for me

I have been reading and mostly ignoring people's comment but I think I should contribute now so that people can relax abit.

First, i seriously doubt shell will send any "success" mail till atleast 2 weeks after the deadline. The reason is that they don't have a standard cut off, they cut off will shift with how good the initial screening criteria is: if for example 10 take this cognitive test and they only need 1 person for the position and can only interview 5 people, they can decide to reject the bottom 5 and wait for more people to apply and see their score, they can keep rejecting the bottom people and maintain the top 5 till they are sure no more applications are coming in.

Also, I don't believe they have reviewed the interviews yet, just do the maths, 15 mins X the number of applicants, it's more likely this first screening is based on cognitive test or something else, the video interview would likely be screened later after reducing the number.

So my people just chill till atleast 2 week after the deadline, this is actually mostly based on the time line from the previous applications. Go and do your research on previous shell application timeline.

@ lifeislife / op

You repeat some things too much for me to be convinced you have moved on: "I have found peace" for example. Also, I think you focus too much on the negatives in a relationship. Relationships like life it's a rollacoster, there are ups and down, you will misstep and learn, you will get hurt, angry, happy, content etc at some point. Human beings will not change, they are not perfect, but they will keep trying, I think generally people try to be good. I think you should try to be a bit more balanced at how you look at relationships, although I don't blame you (too many of my married friends have one issue or another)

As for age, I think you should focus on finding who you are compatible with rather than rushing, else you will end up back here in nairaland looking silly and asking for advise from people that don't understand your situation.

I ask you who checks that with the illegal refinery?

Did you know in the 1990s government imported a bad batch from Russia that caused some cars to blow up.

Then also consider the octane number of the product from illegal refinery.

Also what of the wear on your engine needing to do extra work to keep the inefficient combustion.

Or the fact that you will probably notice that same quantity of product may not last as long.

Well people should keep shouting we have plenty refinery in SS, I have seen them: sad piece of contrapment welded together that either gets destroyed or blow up on its own.

There is a scholarship program but you have to prove your mettle to get it just like every other.

I used to complain about the exorbitant school fees of some of these private universities until I started my current program which is run by a federal university.

Sometimes to get the best hands to work for you, you need to do a lot of spending to bring them down. My school pays each lecturer 600k to take a course per week for a masters class of just 24. But the result? Not grades, I mean employers testimonies about the students performances is that they are rated as high as the best in the world.

We judge because we do not understand these things. If we want mediocres to take charge of our businesses then we should be prepared for no growth.

On that note I hope someday you will come to understand just like I have.

You made great sense but it seems you went of topic.

As I recall this is about bringing God into financial gain (or using God as an excuse to increase fees).

It's true that University fees in Nigeria is quite low and in almost all developed countries there is an increase of about 10% yearly.

What most people are wondering is, why not just say inflation is the reason for the price hike.

Finally, I finished from a government school and dont have a masters degree, but I stuck to the scope of the topic to make my argument. But you missed it.

Does that mean that my school is better

Business is about market (population that have good income). If they bring in their goods, will they sell all of them at their home lands? What people don't understand is that by going "home", you limit the market for your product and thus growth. Business and alot of ideology dont always go hand in hand.

Politics / Re: Patience Jonathan Sues EFCC For N200m by Lnxxxxx(m): 10:55am On Sep 11, 2016
I don't understand this situation at all, the heading, the story, infact, non of it makes sense.

This woman saw trouble (after the trouble avoided her and attached itself to the aid) and decided to run head first into it. Other people would have denied the accounts, even destroyed the atms sef (evidence).

Again, what is her proof that she owns the account Can one sue for money in an account in another persons name? Even if you are the director, you don't sue, the company will sues (abi na lie, lawyers in the house). Who is this her lawyer sef, to chop money you embarrass yourself.

Anyways what's my own.

Business / Re: Profit From Manufacturing by Lnxxxxx(m): 7:00am On Sep 09, 2016

Alright, thanks. But I also don't get this: There are some companies like Honeywell , Cadbury, etc that manufacture in Nigeria. I don't suppose they export the products (that is, no foreign exchange) and yet they make their profit, the same industries that I thought should better the economy. So how do these category of foreign industries (e.g. Cocal-cola in Nigeria) better the economy since they don't export their produce made in Nigeria, but still make profit in this same Nigeria ?

Again, yes and no.

Profit and contribution to the economy is not a matter of import or export, it's a matter or revenue over expenses. Simply put if you make more money than you spend during a production process, then you are making profit (simplified version). Also, the fact they are making profit now doesn't mean their manufacturing process is most efficient, if for example light improves and the government make policies that is attractive to the manufacturing sector, then the efficiency increases, profit margin increases, thus, if they have competition prices drop because both will be competing for bigger market share. If the reverse is the case like increase in fuel or exchange rate, less profit margin, consequently increase in prices to stay profitable.

As for aiding the economy, there are two aspects (maybe more sef but am simplifying things): are all the raw materials obtained from Nigeria or imported and even if they don't export, if they were not there would their products be imported to meet demand. If their raw materials were imported, then they are contributing to dollar demand. If their product is not there, there is a tendency to import to meet internal demand, thus manufacturing in Nigeria may actually reduce demand for dollar by virtue of making available products that would have normally been imported and thus, increase dollars demand.

Hope the above makes sense, again forgive any typos
