Don't worry very soon international flights would be coming into Calabar.
International flights have been landing in Calabar since a long time ago. The Calabar International Airport used to be the hub for flights to Central Africa and flights from Malabo in E/Guinea, Yaounde/Duoala in Cameroon and Kenya used to land in Calabar long before PH Airport assumed international status.
PoliticsRe: Why would obong of calabar try to stop the eze ndi igbo of calabar by LondonCool(m): 7:50pm On Apr 11, 2007
Chief Ezenwenyi is a member of the Obong of Calabar's Traditional Council of Chiefs who advise him on community/traditional matters and an attempt to create a Chiefdom for himself within Calabar is antithetical to the spirit of intra-community relationship between the Igbo's and the Efiks in Calabar. The Igbo's wouldn't accept an Obong of Aba or Onitsha so why is Chief Ezenwneyi (who has been a major benefactor of various State Govt contracts) trying to strike cords of disloyalty in the Efik-land.

The fact that Lagos State have accepted an Eze Ndigbo is not a parameter for it to be replicated in other states without recourse to the cultural idiosyncrasy's of the host community. We all know that the Eze Ndigbo diatribe is something that was started by the Ikemba himself as a one-off, but is now seen as political tool of group cohesion among the Igbo's.

A similar ploy was attempted in Ikom in Northern Cross River in 1998 by one Chief Miki Miki who self coronated himself as the Eze Ndigbo of Ikom- he was chased out of town and lost all his business assets.

We may be sentimental about the whole thing but when one looks at the political undertones behind the motive of Chief Emmanuel Ezenwenyi then one needs to checkmate his aspirations. From a historical perspective one needs to be reminded about a subtle rise of pro-Biafran nationalism in non-Igbo Southern states. The Igbo dream of a Biafra that includes Cross River,Akwa Ibom, Rivers & Bayelsa States is still  paramount on the minds of the pro-Biafra Igbo's; a dream that does not go down well with these Oil rich states. One of the reasons that the Civil War ended ( caused by the fall of Ikot Ekpene and Calabar ) early was due to the non cooperation  of most of the people of Akwa Ibom/Cross River with the Igbo Rebels-thats why till today they (the Igbo's) call them "Sabo's" (or Saboteurs).

Its not an issue of whether Oba ,Obong or Eze Ndigbo mean the same thing, its an issue of not allowing the cultural values and  identity of the Igbo's and Efiks in Calabar to be divided along the lines of allegiance to an Obong or Eze Ndigbo. That is why in recognition of Chief Ezenwenyi's leadership status amongst the Igbo's in Calabar he was awarded the Ada Idaha ke Efik Eburutu Chieftancy title in the first place by the Obong of Calabar'.For him to create a parallel Chieftancy title for himself by upgrading his Ada Idaha title to that of Eze Ndigbo is tantamount to trying to rule in another persons Kingdom. He's either having a laugh or taking the mickey out of the Efiks-he's got to be stopped.

BusinessRe: 100% Mortgage In Uk by LondonCool(m): 2:55pm On Apr 09, 2007
You can get one , BUT due to your residency status (Leave To Remain) you will be paying a VERY VERY interest rate. You will need to prove your income ? How do you intend to pay back the mortgage ? You would also be faced with the prospect of a negative equity in your property if the value of property falls (a major drawback of 100% mortgage).

To avoid the proof of income most Brokers will treat you on a Self Certification basis. They will package your application as if you are working self-employed, and they submit a 3 year Statement of account for you (Certified by an Accountant).

Holla me and can link you with appropriate Brokers who would understand your unique situation. Don't forget you need to budget for

Brokers Fee's = 1% of the cost of your property
Stamp Duty = 1% of the value of your property (Except its less than £150K and in a Govt designated regeneration area)
Accountants Fee's=For providing Statement of Account for your Self -Certification .Between £750 to £1200
Legal Fee's=For cost of conveyancing, Legal search, etc. £1,000 Approx.
Valuation fee's=£350 to £600.

And don't forget when your mortgage starts you will be paying one month upfront.(This wiped off my savings cause I was not prepared for it)  In other words, within the first month you will pay 2 months mortgage repayment.

There are deals where you would not even pay anything at all (excluding Broker's fee's ) -Stamp duty,Legal fee's ,5% Deposit & Valuation get paid for by the Developer on new properties (I got one for a Barratts property in Southampton), this could also depend on your UK residency status and credit reference score.

There is no one way to answer this, all relationships cannot be generalised.

I think I have quite modern views on relationship, whilst still remaining traditional in many ways.

The most important thing would be to be supportive in all things, rather than following set rules.

If my man would rather pay the billl, I'd let him. I am very happy to split the bill or even treat him now and again. However, on the first date, sorry I am very much old-fashioned and still think the man should foot the bill on the first date. But no worries, i try not to drain his bank account on that first date, LOL

I wouldn't kick him out of the house if we had a quarrel, but if he cheated on me and i have tangible evidence, sorry, hun, he has got to go!

Mortgages/Rent: the natural role is for the man to be the main breadwinner. Evene if I earn more than he does, I would be happy for him to contribute in whatever way he can, a man who lets a woman keep him will feel emancipated over time, and that's not good. What i would not abide is a man who refuses to get a job (note i said refuses, not 'is unable to get a job) or he has a job, yet thinks it's okay for me to do all the hard work in the relationship. It takes two!

At the end of the day, love and relationships are all about reciporaction, yet some traditional roles persist and should be maintianed for harmony between the sexes
Its nice to perceive a fresh breathe of air coming from your perspective, but your views are not typical of the London based Nigerian babe which is the subject of this post. Do all your friends think like you because the experience here in London is horrendous without being demeaning. The typical Nigerian babe presumes that the guy wants to take advantage of her so she enetrs into the r/ship with a "What's in it for me attitude". -Quite financially demanding. Whereas the Jamo babes see it as a "Whats in it for us " affair. They are quite understanding and do not make too much outrageous financial demands (except she's the single mother of your baby).

why have banks and other institutions that have lots of cash not invested in this kind of schemes ?
Who told you that banks and other institutions have not invested with theses schemes ?? You must be bluffing yourself. You need to keep your ear to the ground and you'll be intrigued with what you'll hear. Bank staff and managers are involved in their personal capacity; some banks have permanent staff dedicated to the receipt of deposits and disbursement of payouts to these HYIP customers, and some even serve as Agents-earning commission on referrals.

@ Seun, There's a transformation taking place in "The New Firstbank". We've started by infrastructure upgrades, as well as staff re-orientation. Those that are too stiff are being ushered out. The change is gradual, but we'll get there!!!
First Bank had started this transformtion publicity stunt since 1999 when they launched their Century II project-what is the end result ? They are first on  balance sheet results and last when it comes to staff salary . Didn't the Ex-Director Alhaji Wanka bring all his Ex-FSB Bank staff and infiltrate all the senior managerial positions in the name of injecting fresh blood into the "Elephant"-whats the result?. First Bank is just a training school for other banks to take their pick of brilliant but poorly paid staff every year. If Atedo Peterside had joined First Bank in 1980 by now he would have been an OG1 Bank Officer dreaming of climbing the SMP scale. The good performance of First Banks stock has nothing to do with the internal dynamics of improvements in staff salary or technology.

BusinessDangote Sugar Becomes Most Capitalised Company In Nigeria by LondonCool(op): 4:47pm On Apr 06, 2007
Dangote Sugar, Most Capitalised Company
By Shaka Momodu, 04.05.2007

History was made yesterday when Dangote Sugar Refinery which had earlier nudged to second position of most capitalised company breasted the tape to beat FirstBank to become the most capitalised company on the Exchange.

At the end of trading on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) yesterday, Dangote Sugar Refinery Shares appreciated from the previous day’s price of N38.52 per share to N40.44k
And with 10 billion units share of the company outstanding, it has emerged as Nigeria's most capitalised company with market capitalisation of N404.4 billion as against Tuesday’s trading of N385.2 billion, gaining a record 5 percent at a single day's trading which according to Mr Sola Oni, Senior Manager, Corp-orate Affairs of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is "the highest any company can gain in a single day's trading."

Speaking with THISDAY, a capital market operator attributed the company’s phenomenal share appreciation to "a measure of the confidence investors have in the company for it to appreciate that much. It shows its Shares are in good demand by the public. They have confidence in its management".

Dangote Sugar initially had a market capitalisation at listing of about N180 billion, quickly rising to N404.4 billion after only 19 days of trading with share price rising by over 125 percent. the company according to analysts, may have achieved a milestone as arguably the fastest appreciating stock ever listed on the Exchange.

During its public offering, the company offered three billion units of 50 kobo shares at N18 per share, an offer that was over-subscibed by about 40 percent with excess subscription duly returned back to investors with interest.

Dangote Sugar Refinery imports raw sugar from Brazil and refines it in Nigeria for both domestic and industrial use. The company plans to commence export of fully refined sugar from Nigeria to other parts of the West African sub-region in the shortest possible time.
The company has an installed capacity of 4,000 tonnes per day which adds up to about 1.4 million tonnes of refined sugar per annum.

Dangote Sugar Refinery is also one of the first companies in Nigeria to pay a dividend of about N1.15k to all its shareholders, including those that have held the company's share for barely three months.

At the end of the 2006 operating year, the company recorded a turnover of N83.7 billion and a remarkable profit margin of N16.65 billion. Analysts believe that such performance ratio is unprecedented in the history of companies in the Nigeria Stock Exchange.

The company also boasts of over 110,000 new shareholders. About 30 percent of Dangote Refinery's equity are owned by the public, while Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President/CEO of Dangote Group maintains a controlling stake of 70 percent.

Reacting to the company's performance, Mr Uzo Nwankwo, Group Executive Director Corporate Finance, maintained that excellent management was responsible for the company's glowing performance. "We have an excellent management and fundamentally, we have a strong company with good cash flow and very little debt. People see value in the company and have therefore built confidence in it."

He disclosed that offshore investors accounted for over 30 percent of the IPO.

Nwankwo further stated that Dangote Group's offer to the public to invest in its shares is premised on the company's philosopy of sharing wealth to the investing public, adding that the group's successes in its business ventures are a testimony to the sterling management quality of its driving force in the person of Alhaji Aliko Dangote. He revealed further that the company plans to pay first quarter dividend to its shareholders by April in addition to N1.15k dividend already promised.

The 70% equity held by Aliko Dangote amounts to $2.7Billion, he is due for inclusion in the latest Forbes Billionaires list

BusinessRe: Zenith Bank Begins Operation In London by LondonCool(m): 9:16pm On Apr 03, 2007
Naijafresh,

As per your personal experience-that was just limited to remitting money to Nigeria. Your Uncle's experience , was second-hand experience. What was the snobbish attitude of the staff that put him off ? The Bank is not a branch of First Bank in Nigeria; however ,they assist to transfer funds to First Bank accounts or open Accounts on behalf of First Bank in Nigeria. In 2002,when they were a branch they operated differently. Most Nigerian bad banking practice was commonplace and lots of kobo-kobo accounts were being opened. Upon receiving UK licence a new management took over with a new ethos with no more preferential treatment (man-know-man) to customers or Nigerian Directors, and a review of customer accounts was done, hence the £5000 minimum balancee requirement.

You mentioned that FBN Bank were simply a bureau de change with little else to offer. I mentioned what they had to offer and you stated that it wasnt any different from what other banks had to offer. Tell me the truth, havent you ever been snobbed in a UK bank by any staff or a Personal Banker before (especially when they tell you that the "Computer says NO" -ala Little Britain-to your loan application)? It happens everyday.

I know its painful when you get snobbed by a white staff in a so-called Nigerian Bank. I'll advise you to tell your Uncle to meet or call the CEO Mr Peter Hinson  on 020 7920 4920 and explain his experience and displeasure to him.I'm sure he'll be very unhappy about what happened.

Actually, the Bank decided to operate like a Private bank dealing mainly with High-Networth clients and big Corporate players-(as they rake in the profits) hence, the perceived snobbish behaviour (which I don't condone).

naijafresh:
I hope they don't end up like FBN Bank UK (first Bank) who a re simply a bereau de change with little else to offer

Source: Businessday
I take exception to your comment. I worked with First Bank Plc London Branch and was there during the transition towards becoming a fully UK licensed  FSA approved bank-under the name FBN Bank (UK) Ltd. The Bank is not a Bureau de change, it is a big player in the  Trade Finance /Corporate Banking sector in Europe and Asia and West Africa and recently had a Syndicated Loan facility of $28 million arranged by Standard Bank and 8 others over subscribed-underlining a stong confidence of international investors-not the kind of business  Bureau de change operators would indulge in

The Bank also assists UK based Nigerians to open Domiciliary, Current & Savings a/c in any First Bank branch of their choice; they facilitate payment of School fee's on behalf of Nigerian parents ,remittance of UK State pensions to Nigerians back home and offer a wide range of Mortgage services for Nigerians wishing to climb the property ladder in UK. The Bank happens to be an expert in Trade Finance transactions involving Oil & Gas and acts as Intermediary's on behalf of many reputable Banks worldwide. I used to be in charge of Global Custody/Money market transactions and I know the range of deals, transactions and profit being made while I was there. Its quite easy to bad mouth the Bank from the outside, but its good to be objective with remarks. The Bank made a profit of £3.6m in its 3rd year of business with 32 staff-and is moving even stronger.

I have handled and managed so many accounts of UK based Nigerian customers and must admit that lots of Nigerians are doing well and making good money for themselves through their various business endeavours in the UK. You stated that the bank has little else to offer, what exactly were you looking for on their banking menu ?

In view of the banks many corporate responsibility they sponsors the London Nigerian Rugby Football Club (LNRFC) which is proactively promoting mini rugby in West London through its Youth Development Project.

I doubt if you have ever been to the Bank in London that entitled you to make such a scathing remark. If at all you went to the bank to send money home to your loved one's you may want to call it a Bureau de change, but the person who went there to secure a muliti-million Dollar Irrevocable Letter of Credit to finance his Business would find your comment quite appalling. Without mentioning names, more than 2/3 of the banks in Nigeria have an account with FBN Bank UK Ltd who normally act as their UK correspondent for Trade Finance/FOREX and Global payment transactions. Get your facts right.
