TheCongo2: I'm a born and bred Londoner I proudly pay my tax too. There is no-one living in a country whose tax goes into a working system that would be against paying tax. Healthcare and education in Canada like the UK is free AT THE POINT OF SERVICE and NOT free per se because it's largely subsidised by the taxpayer including you and I, right? And so it should be. My point was that most Nigerians while doing calculations based on hourly rates do not factor in costs such as tax. They think they'll just carry 100% of what they earn to build so called mansions. They have very little perception of reality when it comes to how the system works abroad if they have never lived abroad. Contrary to what you thought, I'm not criticising Canada at all, the UK works the same way in fact I was introducing some reality to the discussion and calculations being thrown around. In fact, I am the only one that mentioned tax and other compulsory rates paid on income. 4 Likes |

Exactly, I would never complain about the taxes and contributions I pay and I'm proud of the system I invest in. My point was that people in Nigeria are not considering these costs but only what someone is paid hourly. Surely, bills are important if you are talking about using the wage from a minimal job to 'build mansions'. That was my point. As I stated it won't build a mansion. That's what I stated in my quoted comment which inspired this topic. 1 Like |

People seem to think you take home 100% of what you earn abroad and that you have no additional expenses. That's not the case. Also people are talking about Canada but 14 Canadian Dollars is 11 USD and about £7.80 per hour. What about rent, food travel? The tax rate in Canada on taxable income is 15%, then 20.5% then 26% then top rate is 45.7% There is also a 13% sales tax at the cash register and let's not forget paying for the health system through taxes just like most working countries in the West. There are probably a number of rates and taxes they pay for local amenities and the road infrastructure if they drive. Also mansion is different from a house imho. The same way a Peugeot is different from a Porsche although they are both cars. The claim was about building mansions as the quoted comment says at the start of this thread. 8 Likes |

I feel sorry for this poor mama. You can tell by where she lives that she was struggling a Nd not rich yet she brought up her son to manhood. Akwa Ibom, why? First the killing of children accused of being witches now killing mothers? Honestly, there is so much gullibility in Nigeria. They believe any thing a pastor says. They always say 'there is a witch in the family' it's their default 'prophecy' whereas the Bible talks about the fight not being against flesh and blood. 1 Like |

euromilion:p Kenya has always scored low on the corruption index. They are only five places above Nigeria and for a while they were only one position above Nigeria on the corruption index. The truth is Nigerians are hardly aware of what goes on in other African countries. They are only aware of Nigeria's corruption and don't really research before forming an opinion which they present as facts. Dangote knows what he is talking about. Whereas maybe you've never even stepped foot in Kenya before let alone had business dealings there. 1 Like |

Footysport: Noone will call you crazy, but a thief. You're not a child so stop blaming 'Nigeria' for your criminal bias. There are too many stories of your fellow Nigerians that returned physical cash left mistakenly in the back of their cab by passengers to the owner. They are no less Nigerian than you. I myself have witnessed people return money and property they could easily have stolen and gotten away with, in that same Nigeria. Time to take responsibility for your own choices buddy. If anything it's a person's upbringing and personal ethos that will dictate what they do in this situation. So, not even your religious belief would provoke you to make a more honest decision? 3 Likes |

Thegamingorca: No, that's not true. If you are doing menial jobs abroad and you are building mansions in Nigeria there is some illegal money making happening. After tax and rent, food and transport there is no way mansions can be built. If you had said nursing, fine but not menial jobs. Even if Nigeria is not worth living in there are over 50 others on the continent people could start from with the money paid to traffickers as investment rather than a straight loss. Imagine how much money a bus load of 25 people had raised and what it could have been used to do if they had only looked at things differently instead of with rose tinted glasses, yet some would have died, became slaves or raped on the way. And for what? 61 Likes 3 Shares |

Op the pregnancy may belong to your husband and because you have been so good to her she feels extremely guilty. Since you have helped her in addition to what's expected it makes no sense that she would run like that. On the other hand maybe it was planned by her to get to stay abroad. 1 Like |

Kingsley1000: Do you not think the money they pay to traffickers can be better used in Africa in maybe starting a trade or business? Even going to another African country if they must leave Nigeria? Why go through all that risking of life and abuse just to end up doing menial jobs? Even if they eventually get some form of immigration status their lack of education will keep them at the bottom in terms of jobs. With all you have said above I, struggle to see the sense in such a perilous venture. 63 Likes 4 Shares |

Op, this is so detailed and interesting. If you haven't already you should write a book about the experience. There aren't enough biographical accounts of those that cross the deserts to get to Europe. 52 Likes 2 Shares |
