I currently work as a Process Engineer in NLNG. We are 5 Process engineers in my team and I am the only Chemical Engineering Graduate amongst us, the rest are Mechanical Engineers.

It depends on the sector you are considering. Both are quite versatile and they intertwine at some points.

However, I think if you check newspapers, you are likely to see that for every 10 engineering jobs (mechanical and chemical only) advertised for all sectors,7 will be mechanical. That gives a little indication that Mechanical is a little more versatile but I think chemical engineering is more interesting as testified by my team members.

I'll advise you to take your time and both of you should concentrate on getting a job first. My reasons, I believe, are obvious:

Where would both of you stay and who would be paying the rent as well as the bills?
How would you feed the family especially the children you're rushing to bring forth?
Do you know THAT THE SHAME WOULD BE TRIPLED IF YOU BOTH GET MARRIED WITHOUT A JOB BECAUSE YOU MIGHT JUST RESORT TO BEGGING?

Just put more effort on your job search and most importantly, trust God.

He's got a fair monthly salary (200k - 300k) but just have to be depending on contract renewal pending when a permanent job shows up. I don't see him as someone who's got I-complex because he's got a job at least and confident of himself. He claims that the ladies of his dream he's approached thus far are kinda skeptical about his job future.

I told him to step down a little on these 'ladies of your dream' issue but I somehow also thought that it's good to go for what you want in marriage. It may be dangerous to go for the available when the desirable delays.

Got a friend who's on a contract job with an oil servicing company. He's getting on in age i.e. close to 35; but has no one he's going out with.
He wasn't initially interested in any relationship until he got his current job but the last time we spoke, he said he's really up for marriage now.

Now the problem is: Are there nice and good looking girls out there that will be willing to go out with him with marriage intention knowing he's currently on a contract job?

On a serious note, I really do think any first class graduate from a federal university is a good product. The 4 first class guys in my class are currently here:

1. with a top oil and gas company in the UK
2. with exxon mobil in nigeria
3. with chevron in nigeria
4. with a top world class aerospace industry in the UK.

They are good. PERIOD!!!

Although I can't vouch for private universities first products o.

I think it wasn't possible for the candidates to cheat in these tests, hence the massive failure rate.

Companies in Nigeria should partner with universities on how courses should be run, as the federal government is not capable of doing anything position with the educational system.

Skills are mainly built from real life experience.
For the oil and gas fields, that's what differentiates the foreign schools from the Nigerian ones. Most schools in the UK for instance had virtually all the necessary software required to work in the oil industry; organized enough field trips to simulated rigs, geological locations, etc; regular visits to top oil company; invitation of industry professionals; and many more benefits. This is because there is a strong partnership between the companies and the higher institutions.

The companies in Nigeria can do the same but they rather prefer to build hostels and classrooms. These are good but I believe they can do better than that by providing all the other necessary requirements stated above.


As for the results by NNPC, I don't believe the claim. I think something must have gone wrong somewhere within the system and these may be a good way to cover up. Most 2.1 and 1st class products are good.
Also, I don't mean to sound diplomatic but I think they should have given 2.2 holders a chance just like Shell and also remove the cap placed on age of applicants. This enables them to reach a wider extent of candidates and improves their chances of getting the best.

BTW, I was not invited for the test because I was a few months older than the max age as at the time of applying. I have a 2.1 and an MSc.

If the discovery is not in commercial quantities, then forget it for now.

Onshore is NOT a thing of the past because most of the marginal operators are operating on land. Shell sold most of their onshore fields recently to some of these marginal operators.

There was also a claim of this nature in Gombe sometime years back but I'm yet to hear that any operators have moved there. Ever wondered why? probably because of its economic viablility.

Please, if you are yet to graduate, do as much as you can to get a good CGPA. The reason is because you 'll notice that it is very difficult to get jobs these days in Nigeria.However, with a good CGPA, say 4.00 and above, you have the option of not only applying for MSc abroad but you also have the chances of bagging scholarship awards.

If however, you have graduated with a low CGPA, look for ways in which you can improve yourself perhaps by learning new skills as these will give an indication to the employers that you are willing to learn new things and develop yourself.

This is an old thread but how much does a lecturers truly earn?

Personally as a Guy, I would advise a guy without a job to avoid any intimate relationship. The truth of the matter is no matter how meagre the money a job is bringing in, he is far better off than a jobless guy in the sight of reasonable ladies.

A lady has to be proud to tell her parents that her fiance is working. If the parents are also reasonable, that sense of respect will be there for two reasons: firstly, the guy is not lazy and secondly, that he's definitely going to be upgrading later on in the marriage.

and for a direct answer to the ladies in questions, I think everyone has got a right to choose whatever they like but as someone likely put it; a woman's options decreases with her age.

But I'll advise the one still searching to be more conscious about their attitude and smile more than before.
If you appear frustrated and desperate to guys, you will only make matters worse because they will run away.

Most of all, trust God.

All I can say is take heart.


It's a pity this has happened to you but I'm pretty sure you'll get something better soon.

Hello everyone.

Please, I have a friend who graduated from the UK about 3 years with a Masters in Pet. Engrg. His first degree is in Process Engrg from one of the federal UNI in the east. Right now he's still searching for a job. He's about 32. He's tried different companies with no success. The guy is getting fed up about the whole thing. He's been applying for other kinds of jobs too but it's either 'you don't have experience' or 'you are overqualified for this job' according to him.


When he asked me for advice, I made the following suggestions he could try out but he still doesn't seem to be getting a way with clinching a job.

1) Starting a business but it's really not as easy as people talk about it on the internet.
2) Apply for a PhD perhaps it may help with getting a lecturing job.
3) Apply for an MSc abroad (USA or Canada) but with a scholarship then find your way to getting your 'pali' by hook and crook .


I like to share peoples' burden bcoz i had a similar prob but fortunately got a good job which is why I brought it here for more piece of advice since my advice seems not to be good enough.

Please, any other useful advice would be welcomed.
