davidylan:
Mr. Cushman, the bigger question as usual is one you have successfully dodged! Why are there so many beggars from the north of Nigeria?

When a whole Governor of a state is proud to announce a 95% illiteracy rate in his state!
If thats the fact what else should he do? put a spin on it?

Illeteracy is the biggest problem in the north, from leaders to followers

anyway this will soon become another religious thread *run *

TravelRe: Another Fuel Blast In Lagos: by LoverBwoy(m): 9:37pm On Dec 29, 2006
The last time i checked, Nigeria is not the only country with pipelines. But it is the only country where citizens are forced to scoop fuel from sabotaged pipelines because:
- the people are hungry
- fuel pumps in the world's sixth largest oil producing nation are dry
- more than 70% of the population live on less than $1 a day
are people really forced to scoop fuel?

Up until december they were no reports of fuel shortages

. . . and they say the people are greedy. Greedy to earn a living? Greedy to feed their starving children? Greedy to get fuel to run their cars and personal power generating plants in the face of PHCN's policy of darkness to the people?
If you watched the clips on AIT showing the people scooping the fuel, you will realise 99% of them are thugs! what happened to the people that stayed home and endured the heat and accept the fact they cant go anywhere?

cant be bothered really

Anambra State: Mrs. Virgy Etiaba Refuses to Vacate Office

The legal crisis in Anambra State has taken a new dimension. As the current governor Mrs. Virgy Etiaba refuses to vacate office to her ex-erstwhile boss Peter Obi.
Shortly after an Anambra State High Court gave a judgment nullifying Peter Obi’s impeachment, she got in contact with Andy Uba asking him to protect her from the court judgment. Uba in turn got in touch with President Obasanjo who asked the State Assembly members to appeal the impeachment

SportsRe: Nigerian Football League (nigerian Premier League) by LoverBwoy(m): 8:34pm On Dec 29, 2006
As usual we need better organisation/management

Better pitches- this shouldnt be hard on some field you see overgrown weed and some others you see sand and some patch of grass so the ball never bounce properly

MEDIA coverage: I cant believe nigerian stations cant even broadcast the female tournament. and i think they should stop putting the one and only camera they use behind the fans, when they celebrate you can see anything on tv
I wont be suprise if some another african country buy right to broadcast the nigerian league

Security: lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

they really need to make it attractive

It's not really about what oyinbos think, these are meant to be films whatever happen in real life is different but in a film where real life issues are "replicated" to erm "teach" us some moral lesson* they really do not have to kill any animal, they dont have to BITE the head of a chicken just to tell us the viewers they are making a sacrifice! It's gross i really dont see the difference between that and those that beahead humans angry angry

Well theyve turn me into a vegetarian overnight!

Imagine someone biting the head of a chicken right infront of you a live chicken!
PoliticsRe: How Not To Explain American Foreign Policy To Your Child by LoverBwoy(m): 2:26pm On Dec 29, 2006
TayoD:
@Afam,How can you compare these two situations? They have nothing in common at all. The former is a case of proven ethnic cleansing and genocide, while the later is a case of possible victimisation. If you follow the stories, you will realise that the Doctors and Nurses, who usually swear to protect and save lives, confessed to injecting the ill-fated patients with HIV under torture. They still maintain their innocence up until today.
Libya's motives really needs to be examined closer in this situation. They have said they will only let the professionals go if their countries will pay up some millions in damages to the affected families. Now does that sound like people seeking justice or blackmail? The Bulgaria Government refuses to pay any money, rightly claiming such action will only be an admission of guilt.
That is not exactly true because in some places around the world, death sentences are withdraw by THE families of the victims in return for some form of repatriations. Libya cant just throw cases out because they are foreigners the law of the country have to be followed atleast they've gone through the appeal process.
At the same time libya is contributing money with some other countries to fund the treatment of the victims.

PoliticsRe: How Not To Explain American Foreign Policy To Your Child by LoverBwoy(m): 12:35pm On Dec 29, 2006
The death penalty wont vanish after the death of saddam
The country should follow their own law

If the west speaks out against the death of people they like, that doesnt mean those countries will obey them. I think it is proper for US to hold him during the trial process.

TV/MoviesNollywood And Animal Cruelty by LoverBwoy(op): 11:05am On Dec 29, 2006
"No animals were harmed in the production of this film" this is the kind of statements that usually appear in films where animals are involved in other parts of the world!

In nollywood for some reason most animals are killed without thinking of the impact if can have on other people  angry angry

I just watched this Nigeria film "Eemo"/Emoo". the film is average as usual until the remaining part where they do the usual- money rituals. The  Voodoo guy basically ripped the head off chicken with his  teeth!!!!

There is this other movie i watched before, as usual it involved another ritual scene, the actor killed a goat (probably only a month old) and buried it on the street.

There are several Nollywood movies that involve killing animals for whatever reason, the thing is that viewers do not necessarily have to see the actual act, they can even avoid killing the animals- just put a knife near it or take it into the voodoo place and we'll get the message.

If Nollywood is to grow they really have to do something about making people physically ill. It is absolutely unecessary, barbaric and plain wrong. If the RSPCA and other animal rights group start viewing these films, they'll probably have it banned in some countries and worst case scenario - animal rights campaigners can physically attack Nigerian movie makers/actors. they do this company directors and universities already!

while People like Yossou N'dor, Lady Blacksmiths are considered african best- international media

EducationRe: Should Nigerian Polytechnics Be Converted Into Universities? by LoverBwoy(m): 5:16pm On Dec 28, 2006
ishmael:
NO, thatz not what i'm saying. The university Engineering graduates are the ENGINEERS, while the polytechnic graduates are Engineering Technologists and Technicians. What i'm saying is that it is the university Engineers that are the major problem because they have not been able to design anything for the Technologists and Technicians to work on, rather they bring themselves back to the level of Technicians by carrying out maintenance and repairs on machines. If i may ask what have our Engineers in Nigeria achieved so far?? Have they been able to do anything with the bulk of iron ore that we have in Nigeria?? Have they been able to come out with a design for any Engine-block like their counterpart Engineers in other countries?? Considering these, between the polytechnic and university who do you think really needs restructuring and overhauling??
Engineers and technicians should not be competing about who have done what so far? they are meant to work together. If one group don't achieve anything then the other group wont achieve anything either. Merging the the two would harmonise the work they do already, when technicians are there in the design process then you can't exactly blame one group when things go wrong, when the two groups work together they achieve better results it not a competition afterall they are there to make the world a better place.

the Education system as a whole needs restrucsturing, you cant fix the head without the body wink
Music/RadioRe: Why Isn't Nigerian Music Very Popular Internationally? by LoverBwoy(m): 4:57pm On Dec 28, 2006
@ Loverb
The question was is the Naija music popular among Africans in general and I said YES! what part of d question did i miss?
The question : WHY ISNT NIGERIAN MUSIC VERY POPULAR INTERNATIONALLY?

I think we need to market Nigerian Music much more, and we can do it ourselves, instead of waiting for people to do it for us. did u ask me how?, if we can harness the control of the western media, i guess we can make use of the internet.  That is why i appreciate people like Bella Naija ( check www.bellanaija.blogsot.com ) and Dami on Naijavixen (www.naijavixen..com) who do their own little bit of marketing Nigerian artiste. I also have www.naijabrains.com where i dedicate the whole blog to NaijaMusic.
Good point gbenga, but seeing as we can't own the western media remember we didn't own it when King Sunny ADE and Fela were still on top; We might as well try to collaborate with western media and diversify our marketing, instead of showing them on Nigerian TV abroad only or promoting them to Nigerian/African audience alone we can partner with "mainstream" promoters and T.V stations

Some Nigerian promoters/artist and event organizers re lazy actually they enjoy being the big fish in a very small rivers, they are happy to just be the "big boys" withing the Nigerian/African community.

TravelRe: Nigeria Build State Of The Art Railway System by LoverBwoy(m): 5:54am On Dec 28, 2006
And that was why OBJ for want of acievements to flaunt, decided to flaunt the introduction of GSM in the country. What a shame something that is taken for granted in other neighbouring countries is now seen as an achievement in Nigeria.Giant of Africa indeed.
If the rail system becomes successful we shouldnt really worry about how other countries see it their systems, better late than never

As Nigerians, our favourite past time would probably be gisting about the number of problems we have
When are we going to start solving the problems? if we don't start solving our problems we will basically have more problems. When we resolve our problems as we go along, it will have an effect on other problems and we will inevitably have less problems to contend with.

We can always ammend sections of the constitution,
IF we sit down and scrap the whole process we really wont achieve anything
We can just sit back and not initialise any project just because we havent don't anything in some other sector
We have to modify our version of democracy as we go along
TravelRe: Nigeria Build State Of The Art Railway System by LoverBwoy(m): 4:58am On Dec 28, 2006
in the case of Nigeria, we wont loose anything by learning as we go along, constant review of the constitution, better oppositon (there no point gathering in one party;the opposition should be as good as thr ruling party)
better enforcement of the laws we have already

To be talking about reaping enormous benefits from this project lies on the assumption that the project is going to be completed. And going by precedents, that is a huge and "unsafe" assumption to make in the Nigerian context.
Back in 1990s, the assumptions then were that mobile phone would forever be a luxury to normal citizens, our debt will spiral out of control, queues for fuel will grow longer and we would still be under military rule going by previous situations  wink

Hmmm, that third party from your post did not actively participate in putting Nigeria in its pitiful and sorry state. They might be accused of doing nothing but at least they did not do anything to have Nigeria in its decadent state. I only concentrated on those that are actively and constantly involved in the day to day governace of Nigeria.
So let us not lose our sense of directions here in terms of where to point fingers.
But the third party wants a change from the pitiful and sorry state and it will still be accussed of doing nothing to avoid the current state of the country

sorry for seemingly going offline from the topic but then it is inevitable. We have seen other contracts come and go and it is only logical that we will look at the present situation bearing in mind what has transpired before.
True words, but it is also logical that we look at the enormous benefits of what could emerge in the future from this project

If u insist on climbing the Mt Everest without your footwear, then it means U are ignorant of the technique of Mountain climbing or that U are just headstrong and stupid.Either way, U do not have any biziness climbing the mountain in the first place.

TravelRe: Nigeria Build State Of The Art Railway System by LoverBwoy(m): 3:21am On Dec 28, 2006
I started this thread soley to discuss the railway system and the benefit in THEORY
I don't think anyone is suggesting all is well in nigeria- im not! It's far from well

The actions of these two group of people explains the situation Nigeria has found itself today
You didnt mention the the third group, the group that stood by the standlines with all the degrees and absolutely no POWER

The group that have studied all sort of governance in the world and know exactly what the country needs but has no power to implement it, they want the change so badly but they can't go outside of their comfort zones to get a result

If you climb midway up mount Everest with one of your footwear missing, theres absolutely no point in me standing at the bottom of the mountain, telling you or even the people around what you should have done! what i should be telling you is what to do now or finding a way to get the other footwear to you.

We can't go back to the drawing board, these politicians are there already.
these politicians are not aliens, they are nigerians afterall the only difference is that they have power!
