Mozambican defense forces kill 10 terrorists: report

MAPUTO, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Mozambique defense forces has killed 10 terrorists who attacked the population of Matemo Island in the country's northern province Cabo Delgado on Wednesday midnight, the state media Radio Mozambique reported on Friday.

"An air and maritime force were deployed to the scene where they fought a heavy battle, preliminary data indicates that 10 terrorists were killed and several war materials seized," the report quoted Ernesto Mandungue, spokesperson of the provincial police command in Cabo Delgado, as saying.

The terrorists allegedly entered the Matemo Island disguised as villagers and their presence was reported by the villagers to defense authorities, according to the report.

The report says searches are still being carried out and the navigation around the island areas has been interrupted until security is restored.

On Tuesday night, insurgents dressed in the uniform of Mozambican Defense and Security Forces (FDS) attacked and occupied Matemo island in Ibo district for the second time in two months, burning houses and clashing with government soldiers. As of Thursday, a militant presence remained on the island.
According to a local source, around 20 insurgents wearing military uniform arrived on Matemo on Tuesday evening via the Liwelko neighbourhood, claiming they were there to maintain security, but by 1am they began to set huts ablaze. Sources in contact with relatives on nearby Quirambo island reported spotting an FDS boat at about 3:50 AM, which was joined 40 minutes later by two military helicopters.

On Thursday 17 March, Islamic State social media channels claimed insurgents engaged the government security forces and local militia, killing seven and wounding others. This has not yet been corroborated by other sources.
Matemo island was previously attacked on 1 February, with at least three killed and many buildings burnt down, including the local hospital.

SAMIM repulses ASWJ on Mozambican island
SAMIM (SADC Mission in Mozambique) elements in concert with Forḉas Armadas de Defesa de Moḉambique (FADM) report a successful offensive against Al Sunnah wa Jama’ah (ASWJ) terrorists on an island north of Pemba last week.

Matemo Island is one of the Quirimbas Islands, about 100 km from the port city of Pemba. The island is nearly 24 square kilometres in area with palm groves, beaches and five villages as well as tourist resorts. It is part of a 32-island archipelago including the Ibo, Medjumbe, Quirimba, Metundo, Quisiva, Vamizi and Rolas islands.

A SAMIM communique has it the island was attacked by ASWJ with “a top leader” in command.

“The terrorists lost ground suffering casualties and serious injuries,” the communique states, adding “about eight fatalities” were inflicted on the attackers with terrorist equipment and weapons recovered.

20 terrorists killed in three day battle – AIM report

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The battle for control over Matemo island off the coast of the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado took three days, in which the Mozambican defence and security forces killed 20 islamist terrorists.

According to Joaquim Mangrasse, the Chief of the General Staff of the Mozambican Armed Forces, (FADM), cited by the independent television station STV, four members of the Mozambican forces also died in the clashes.

According to Mangrasse, during the fighting the Mozambican forces destroyed six boats used to carry the terrorists from the mainland. The Mozambican troops were supported by forces of SAMIM, the SADC (Southern African Development Community) Mission in Mozambique.

The terrorists landed on Matemo on 26 March, and the FADM reacted by sending air and naval forces to the island. The authorities imposed an exclusion zone around the island – no vessels were allowed to approach while the clashes continued.

The initial police estimate was that the terrorist group that landed on Matemo consisted of 20 people. If this estimate was accurate, then all the raiders have been killed.

Firstly I doubt it was a Neptune. I may be wrong but I suspect a Harpoon while she was maybe diverted by false radar returns or Juke UAVs. Fyi all 3 Blocks also have a land based truck launch system making historically anti Russian Romania bordering the Jukes a likely suspect especially given the short max 150 km range. That's likeliest imo- if it was a Harpoon I doubt it was sub or air delivered.

Secondly the Russians blundered bigly! It seems they were using the Moskva's S 300 system as a floating AA cover-I'd NEVER have used that arsenal ship in such a confined space. Too little room to manoeuvre.
I'd have gone for a pair of Gepard frigates with the medium range Shtil SAMs. Though half the range of the S 300 I think operating as a pair coupled with judicious Russian use of High Altitude drones like the BAS 62 should've been effective.

I read somewhere the Ruskies were duped into focusing their 180⁰ radar coverage on a pair of Bayrakta drones, while the missiles came in from land.

Mali Helicopter Fired ‘Close to’ UK Peacekeepers: London, UN Source

A Malian army helicopter fired several rockets “close to” British members of a UN peacekeeping force in the country, the UK defence ministry and UN said Tuesday in the first such incident of its nature.

The incident was the first of its kind between Mali, newly backed by Russian forces, and UN peacekeepers, a UN source told AFP on condition of anonymity.

“All UK personnel are safe and accounted for, and the circumstances surrounding this incident are being investigated,” he added.

The incident took place in the area of Tessit, near Gao city in the east of the country.

According to a diplomatic document seen by AFP, the Malian army fired six rockets from its helicopter.

The document says almost all Malian helicopters are flown by Russians assisted by Malian co-pilots.

The statement questioned whether several MINUSMA contingents could remain in place if Russian troops were involved.

OK and? So you think this sentence means the SANDF only flies these to drones?? Are you ret@rded bru?
grin grin grin
He doesn't know so educate him.
As far back as 2006, we were amongst the first to develop drones as targeting platforms for artillery, with the Paramount Vulture.

And then there's the jet-powered Denel Skua target drone, designed to mimic fast attack aircraft and used for testing weaponry, such as Denel’s own Umkhonto surface-to-air missile and the Brazilian-made MAA-1 Piranha air-to-air missile.

To this end, the Skua reach speeds of Mach 0.86 (1,062km/h) at an altitude of around 32,800ft. According to Denel, the endurance of the Skua is 60 minutes at a speed of Mach 0.7 (865km/h) and an altitude of roughly 20,000ft.

It has not been accepted into service as at 2019, and giving the liquidation of Denel, there's no evidence that your military accepted the aircraft into service.
Denel Dynamics has not been liquidated. On the contrary, they won a new contract in the UAE just a few months ago.

They did not buy or drones bru
There are 2 versions of the Seeker 400. The unarmed version which we ordered, and the Seeker 400 Syper, armed with 4 Impi-s.

As Kabe's post was about UCAV, that is, armed, no SANDF doesn't have.

The SANDF opted not to order the armed version of the Seeker, which Denel sold to the UAE and Saudi. So no, we do not have UCAVs.
