jl115:Reading the transcripts of the intercepted Russian comms, it's astounding how shambolic their campaign has been. BTW, have you seen the latest comms gear Reutech is currently delivering to the SANDF? |
Nemesis4you:Oh I was only using that pic to illustrate the needless losses on the Russian side. We may never know the extent directly attributable to bad comms. |
Why Russian radios in Ukraine are getting spammed with heavy metal Ukrainians are eavesdropping on the invaders and broadcasting on their frequencies One of the many surprising failures of the Russian invasion force in Ukraine has been in radio communications. There have been stories of troops resorting to commercial walkie-talkies and Ukrainians intercepting their frequencies. This may not sound as serious as a lack of modern tanks or missiles, but it helps explain why Russian forces seem poorly co-ordinated, are falling victim to ambushes and have lost so many troops, reportedly including seven generals. What is going wrong with Russian radios? Modern military-grade radios encrypt signals and change the frequency on which they operate many times a second, making their transmissions impossible to intercept. But many Russian forces are communicating on unencrypted high-frequency (HF) channels that allow anyone with a ham radio to eavesdrop. The Russian army does have some modern tech. It started receiving Azart radios, which have built-in encryption and can operate on much higher frequencies, in 2012. Thomas Withington, a military analyst specialising in electronic warfare, says that the Azart system seems adequate, if inferior to the equipment used by NATO forces. But there are not enough radios to go around. Russian news reports have talked enthusiastically about deliveries of a few hundred radios shipped to whole army groups comprising several thousand troops. By the most optimistic estimates only a fraction of the invasion force could have Azart radios. https://www.economist.com/the-economist-explains/2022/03/28/why-russian-radios-ukraine-war-intercepted-heavy-metal?utm_medium=social-media.content.np&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=editorial-social&utm_content=discovery.content

jl115:I learned a long time ago to stop worrying about the Rand and only use the bond market as an ZAR indicator. A strong Rand is good for only 2 things in the real economy: buying crude oil and machinery. Imports of high-end consumer goods and overseas holidays -for which a strong Rand always excites the chattering class -are secondary. SA reported its largest current-account surplus on record last year as import demand was down due to COVID and the value of gold exports rose to the highest since at least 1960. A weak Rand is good for exports - $1/R8 to R18 float (certain annual trips to N. America & Europe don't always coincide with business trips ) - as long as Eskom doesn't muck about with our manufacturing, and the commodity boom cycle holds. To be honest, we fix Eskom, the ports, rail, provide some policy certainty in mining, manufacturing and agriculture, and I would actually become a full-fledged weak Rand proponent. Postscript: NYSE now up 5.5% since Fed announcement. |
Tomorrow, Wednesday 16 March, is going to be very interesting for all those countries generally grouped with Russia amongst "emerging economies". Moscow needs to hand over $117 million in interest payments on dollar-denominated government bonds, and with roughly $315 billion of Russia's foreign reserves frozen by sanctions, they've indicated an intention to pay in roubles. Deja vu for me as I started my career with the Russian default of 1998. Interest rates shot up all around the world, and South Africa, with its tradable currency and comparatively open economy, got unfairly thumped. Even the dollar slumped 10% against the yen in two days, the most it has ever fallen against any currency in modern history. For SA, the effect was enormous. The local prime rate shot up like a rocket, up all the way to a record 25.5%, and the 10-year bond yield hit 20%. If Russia defaults tomorrow, the effects won't be as severe as 1998, for a few reasons: 1) Russian sovereign debt to foreigners is only $60 billion, an accounting error; 2) The ZAR has remained comparatively stable over the past few months. No longer is the rand a proxy for emerging market currencies, as other currencies, like the Turkish lira, are now as highly traded as the rand was back then; and 3) Unlike 1998, SA’s inflation rate is now lower than the world average, which makes for a stronger currency, less inflationary effects and reduced pressure on the SA Reserve Bank to continue raising interest rates, which should bode well for the economy.

Reading reports of people stockpiling flour and sunflower oil in the Maghreb, a region which depends heavily on imports of these products from Ukraine and Russia. With the spike in prices on the agricultural futures markets, exporting producers in SA are smiling, but it's an alarming prospect for food insecure countries, regardless of source country.

South Africa’s polar research and logistics vessel, S.A. Agulhas II, has helped enable an expedition team to find the wreckage of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, Endurance… which was crushed by ice in the Weddell Sea, off the coast of Antarctica, back in 1915. For over a century, the Endurance has been one of the most famous undiscovered shipwrecks in the world, lost almost 10,000 feet below sea level, in some of the iciest waters on the planet. https://www.sapeople.com/2022/03/09/watch-sas-agulhas-ii-helps-team-find-1915-endurance-shipwreck-off-coast-of-antarctica/

![]() African Union! People must disabuse themselves of this notion of there being a single "African" voice on international affairs. Just the other day, someone was suggesting African countries must subordinate themselves to Russia and China. Either from lack of imagination or ingrained inferiority complex or both. To illustrate, this is how "Africa" voted on the UNGA Resolution condemning Russia's war on Ukraine. Rightly, each country determining its own stance:
