Nemesis4you:You're too kind. Post-Soviet Ukraine has always been a deeply corrupt shithole, beholden to the whims of thieving oligarchs. That said, the long-suffering Ukrainian people have been raped enough by their politicians, they don't need Vlad the Thug piling on. |
Nemesis4you:Useful idiot! ![]() I see they did the same thing to Erdogan! Just heard a Turkish official on Al-Jazeera complaining that "Our Russian counterparts scheduled a meeting, which they never intended to honour." ![]() |
We already know the impact rising food prices can have on the north African countries. Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya import most of their grain from Ukraine. Below them, Ethiopia and Sudan might also find themselves in a spot of bother. I thought the turbulence in Ukraine had already been priced in, but watching grain futures today, it's going to be a white-knuckle ride for all 7 countries.

Meanwhile, in the DRC. "Republic of South Africa Battalion (RSABATT) deployed under the umbrella of the United Nations in the Eastern side of the Democratic Republic of Congo, were ambushed while on escort duties. The RN4 road connects Ituri province to North Kivu province. The vehicles are escorted by security forces because of the presence of armed groups along this regionally important road. Republic of South Africa Battalion soldiers was ambushed while escorting civilian trucks from the Luna checkpoint to Banwansura checkpoint as it is the responsibility of peacekeepers to protect cargo vehicles. Allegedly Allied Defence Force (ADF) rebels tried to cut the convoy in the middle, by attacking the middle vehicles. Young lions of the SA National Defence Force under the Leadership of Lieutenant C.D. Ramphele responded accordingly to protect the civilians and their comrades in arms. At least eight armed groups members were killed during the shootout, unfortunately, three civilians succumbed to injuries. Four AK 47 assault rifles have since been seized with 18 rounds of ammunition. "Train as we fight" proved to be the key to winning a firefight, as South African soldiers came out strong with no fatalities. Lieutenant Ramphele said, "the first thing that came to my mind when I heard the first bullet from the armed group was Dash, Down, Crawl and Fire." The insurgents, who have lost most of the territory they once controlled to soldiers, have thus shown they are still able to carry out skirmish attacks."

I hope this gets sorted out quickly: Nigerian forces kill children in airstrike over border in Niger, official says NIAMEY, Feb 20 (Reuters) - The Nigerian military has killed and wounded children in an airstrike in neighbouring Niger, a local governor in Niger, state television and an aid agency said on Sunday, although Nigeria's armed forces said they were still investigating. He did not say how he knew that Nigerian forces carried out the attack. Niger's state television also said it was carried out by Nigerian forces, without providing evidence. "As a matter of policy, the Nigerian Air Force does not make any incursions into areas outside Nigeria's territorial boundaries. That's our policy," Major General Jimmy Akpor, Nigeria's Director of Defence Information, said. He said an investigation was underway. https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/nigerian-forces-kill-children-airstrike-over-border-niger-official-says-2022-02-20/ |

jl115:No. Or maybe not yet? We've only got the 2 Oryx in Moz. |
jl115:I think the 5 referred to these 2 plus the 3 deployed in DRC. We were being told only 4 flying. |
Toju200:May they continue to thrive. |
A Battalion Combat Group (BCG) finally being sent to Mozambique. 60 to 80 armoured personnel carriers (Casspir and Mamba). Explains all the allied air lift that's been flying in and out, besides the normal weekly SAAF C130 flights to Moz and DRC.

First Project Biro vessel to be handed over next month The first multi-mission offshore patrol vessel (MMIPV) being acquired for the South African Navy is currently undergoing sea trials and will be handed over in late March. Armscor said Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT) was contracted in January 2018 to deliver three Biro vessels, with the first (P1571) to be handed over to the Navy in March this year, followed by P1572 in June 2023 and P1573 in September 2024. Deliveries were originally scheduled to start from mid-2021 – the first keel was laid in February 2019. SAS Sekhukhune (P1571) has concluded most of her sea trials and, according to Armscor, exceeded specified performance. Sea trials would have concluded earlier, but were delayed by international travel bans due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Final crew training has commenced and will be completed in March – the vessel is due to be handed over to the SA Navy on 24 March. The hull of P1572 (SAS Adam Kok) is 75% complete and 33 of 46 main equipment factory acceptance tests have been completed successfully. Fabrication is underway of eight of the 21 sections that make up the third vessel (SAS Shaka), and a quarter of factory acceptance tests have been completed. https://www.defenceweb.co.za/featured/first-project-biro-vessel-to-be-handed-over-next-month/?fbclid=IwAR1yZJEwGRZLeXWxbHhkg7AACVpVLIEHgtatFyxjExqEscD4bVR5uGs1lKQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baGQE-sgGoc

"South African National Defence Force AMET (Air Medical Team) deployed in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, evacuated members of FARDC (Congo Soldier) who were injured by an Improvised Explosive Device. The incident occurred at Ituri Province, in a village called Tchabi. Congolese soldiers were busy with their daily task of protecting civilians from Illegal Armed Groups and incidentally stepped on the IED. Swift response by this medical personnel and the Oryx crew to save the lives of friendly force was the decider of life and death. All the injured soldiers of FARDC were stabilized and evacuated to level 3 Hospital at Goma. FARDC Commander expressed gratitude to the whole team that assisted his members with medical care and air transportation."

iblawi:Can you explain to me the different levels? Like what does level A mean and so on? Secondly, can you then tell me the level of the ESAL simulator in SA? Lastly, do you think something commissioned in 1993 stays the same? How would it work exactly for a pilot flying today's Super Puma, to use a simulator with 1993 cockpit controls? Does that even make sense? I think that everybody -military and private - using ESAL simulators should immediately demand refunds from those rascals at Airbus Helicopters. ![]() |
