GreenandGold:Well, it is tech from the late '90s (we produced a working prototype in 2006, I think?) so it is not completely silent, and the battery capacity is nothing like today's electric vehicles. |
Fynline:Some days I think the strap line for this thread should be: "Abandon all facts, ye who enter here!" ![]() |
There I was doing 140km/hr on the M3 motorway, when an Audi RS GT appeared, passed and disappeared in what seemed like a blink. Something felt odd. Only later did I realise the customary roar was missing; there was complete silence. It was the fully electric Audi RS e-tron GT. It brought to mind the Rooikat CVED (Combat Vehicle Electric Drive). Imagine the possibilities when the tech matures.

Nautic Africa launches another Sentinel vessel for West Africa Nautic Africa, a subsidiary of Paramount Maritime, has launched another 35 metre long Sentinel vessel, the MV Tuguemi, which will be deployed in the Gulf of Guinea region. The vessel was christened at Hamlet Quay in Elliot Basin in Cape Town, marking the third launch of the 35 metre version of the Sentinel series. As it is designed to operate in dangerous waters, the aluminium-hulled vessel features composite ballistic armour on its wheelhouse and main deck accommodation structure, while gun mounts and ballistic shields are fitted to offer coverage around the vessel. Wheelhouse protection is up to NATO STANAG Level II and deckhouse ballistic protection to STANAG Level I. Powered by three Caterpillar C32 main engines each developing 1 193 kW and driving three propellers, the Sentinel has a range of 1 300 nautical miles at economical speed (top speed is nearly 30 knots). With a length of 35 metres, a beam of 7.5 metres and draught of 2 metres, the Sentinel has six cabins for both crew and security personnel. The Sentinel’s 11×6 metre cargo deck can further accommodate 20 tons of cargo or a 20-foot shipping container. A 6.5 metre semi-rigid boat can also be launched via a davit. “The launch of the 35 metre Sentinel Vessel, named the MV Tuguemi, is yet another milestone in our production of a world class product made proudly in Africa, for Africa,” said Paramount Maritime CEO Lee Connolly. “Indeed, the ramifications of maritime piracy, including kidnappings and even assaults plague the whole of Africa’s trajectory, not just their points of origin. Rule of law in Gulf of Guinea (GoG) territorial waters and their associated blue economic zones has been routinely challenged and such crimes hit record-heights during the COVID-19 pandemic, which in turn exacerbated already-constrained supply chains across the continent”. In February 2020 Nautic Africa launched a new 35 metre Sentinel vessel for Nigerian customer Hadnuvo Marine Ltd. The vessel, MV Khajan, was the first model of the new design in this class. A second 35 metre Sentinel, also for the Gulf of Guinea, was launched in February 2021. Nautic has over the last decade built a large number of Sentinel vessels for export customers. Nautic Africa also announced that larger naval versions (40 metres and 47 metres) of the vessel have been made available due to rising interest from navies, and will be offered globally to bolster military and fishing patrol operations across EEZ waters. https://www.defenceweb.co.za/featured/nautic-africa-launches-another-sentinel-for-west-africa/?fbclid=IwAR1hphBil9KkCnNetwoPkuPXh6tmQIkR9MH85Xv13aWC5blBirFZ8t3oVAg

Indian Army inducts Bharat Forge Kalyani M4 Monocoque Hull Multi Role Mine Protected Armoured Vehicle in Pune The Kalyani M4, which will be built at the company’s Pune plant, is a multi-role platform, designed to meet the requirements of the armed forces for quick mobility in rough terrain and in areas affected by mine and IED threats. It has ballistic and blast protection from up to 50 kg TNT side blast, or IED or roadside bombs due to its design that is built on a flat-floor monocoque hull. With a thrust speed of 140 km per hour, the vehicle has a payload of 2.3 tonnes and an operating range of about 800 km. The M4 is an original product of the South African arms firm Paramount Group but has been fine-tuned for Indian conditions by Bharat Forge. The two firms have also signed a deal to join their technologies, capabilities and expertise to manufacture armoured vehicles in India. Paramount Group said it wanted to position the M4 as the “future of protection” in all markets across the world. https://www.theigmp.org/2022/04/indian-army-inducts-bharat-forge-kalyani-m4-monocoque-hull-multi-role-mine-protected-armoured-vehicle-in-pune.html?fbclid=IwAR17F84VbOwzjrRdvamAe034Vxng4Y5B74S-MnQBRNF28v7R-V-COif9WvY

GreenandGold:What Odunayaw said is applicable to everyone. People here fixate on the toys (s300, Patriot etc) and overlook systems. |

Lurker4Long:Funeral service for Sergeant Busisiwe Mjwara, a police diver with the Hilton K9 Search and Rescue Unit, who, together with her beloved Leah, died whilst ensuring others lived, in the aftermath of the KZN floods. At around 11.30am on Saturday, April 16, during a rescue operation at Henley Dam, near Inanda, Mjwara reportedly got into difficulties and started to be swept away by the current. Leah, her service dog, jumped in to try and rescue her. Their search and rescue colleagues managed to get to them, but despite attempts at resuscitation, both Mjwara and Leah died.Mjwara is survived by her husband and two young children.

![]() SA has abstained on all 3 votes at the UN so far. Zelenskyy: "Had a phone conversation with Cyril Ramaphosa. Told about our resistance to Russian aggression. Discussed the threat of a global food crisis, deepening relations with the Republic of South Africa and cooperation within international organizations." |
kikuyu1:That is typical hyperbole from a certain type of Saffer. The cost was estimated at ZAR20 billion for the whole province, which whilst nothing to sneeze at, pales whilst looking at the size of the provincial economy. Manufacturing and agriculture, the province's main economic activities were back to pre-riot levels before the floods. |
GreenandGold:With the exception of the Western Cape, you can't use "planning" and "provincial government" in the same sentence! Oh, I'd exclude insurance companies from any portfolio. Or instruct your provident fund manager to do same. |
