Odunayaw:The west wasn't what I was discussing. It doesn't necessarily follow that criticising Putin means I excuse criminals like Bush, Blair, Sarkozy etc. |
Odunayaw: ![]() You and nemesis act like I haven't expressed my views on Vlad the Thug before! I have nothing against Russia. My favourite symphonies are all Russian. I think their government is abominable! |
Right, no sensical response from the Russia supporters. |
Bleep |
Lurker4Long:The people here who've been supporting Russia in her aggression and are from Nigeria: still feel the same way now that Russia has shown the middle finger to India's main oil supplier - Nigeria - by undercutting the oil price? |
Meanwhile, in Mozambique.

As my favourite economist, the great John Maynard Keynes said, "the market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent". Many of the region’s April oil cargoes have yet to find a home because the three biggest customers — China, India and Europe — are buying less, according to traders specializing in West African barrels.https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-04-12-west-africa-oil-still-unloved-despite-post-ukraine-supply-woes/?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook#Echobox=1649739067 |

Mali managed to get its choppers just in time. Mali receives Mi-24s and radars from Russia Mali’s military has received two Mi-24P attack helicopters from Russia as part of continuing efforts to bolster the country’s armed forces. The Forces Armees Maliennes (FAMA) said a batch of equipment from Russia was received by Defence Minister Sadio Camara at Bamako-Senou Airport on 30 March. The equipment, delivered by a Russian Air Force An-124 transport under a longstanding agreement with Russia, included attack helicopters and radar systems (Protivnik-GE/59N6-TE mobile radars). The Mi-24Ps add to the four Mi-35s received earlier from Russia. The final two Mi-35s arrived in Mali in January 2021, following a 2016 contract for four of the aircraft, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The first two were delivered in 2017. SIPRI also reports that four Mi-171Sh helicopters were received in 2021 under a $61 million deal that includes training and weaponry. https://www.defenceweb.co.za/aerospace/military-helicopters/mali-receives-mi-24s-and-radars-from-russia/

kikuyu1:Sadly, this malaise continues to plague our continent, where doctrine does not determine purchase of equipment, but the allure of shiny toys. |
kikuyu1, look at this: Uganda contracts India’s HAL to maintain Su-30 fleet Uganda has awarded Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) a contract to maintain and support its Su-30 combat aircraft fleet in a historic deal. https://www.defenceweb.co.za/aerospace/aerospace-aerospace/uganda-contracts-indias-hal-to-maintain-su-30-fleet/

It's a toss-up between Accra and Mindelo as to my favourite West African city. Good to be back in Accra, with a fresh suitcase of clothing flown up by BA from Cape Town. Don't even mind the humidity fogging up my glasses as soon as I venture outside. Tilapia with banku for supper loading...
|
Xbee007:No, gone forever. |
Lagos traffic! I'm flying to Ghana on Tuesday, and therefore need a Covid test. The only place acceptable to my medical aid is 4.5km away and the quickest travel time is 38min at midnight, on a Saturday!
|
Got an email from British Airways saying they've reviewed CCTV footage at Bole International in Addis and can confirm Baggage Handling there loaded my luggage onto the plane. So went missing at MMIA, together with 6 other passengers. Will claim from BA when back in SA. In the meantime, BA is flying a replacement suitcase from Cape Town, which I'll pick up in Accra on Tuesday. |
kabe1:Problems started at immigration: we did the Visa applications online, and it said visa issued on arrival. Showed all the online confirmations to Immigration, they had none of the info on their system, and wouldn't accept our electronic confirmations. Clearly our local fixers are used to it, cos they travel with portable printers. So they printed the confirmations, and those were deemed acceptable. The exact thing that's on mobile phones and laptops! |
Murtala Muhammed is worse than last time I was here. My luggage is missing and nobody can tell me where it is. And considering there are holes in the conveyor belt, wouldn't be surprised it just fell off. Trying to buy some clothes, and none of the shops accept non-Nigerian cards. ATMs can only dispense a maximum of 20 000 naira per transaction, and seeing that I've now withdrawn 5 times, my bank deemed it suspicious -considering the location and the highly unusual behavior; can't remember last time I withdrew cash - and blocked my card. On a positive note, the local detail have fantastic in trying to iron out issues. Postscript: My cards work at Shoprite, where I went for toiletries.

Some of us pointed out M23 would be back after their defeat in 2013/4. Those who fled to Uganda were arrested, whilst those who went to Rwanda were put up in hotels. |
GreenandGold:The drone contract was "irregularly" awarded to the Italian company Selex, and there've been complaints the drones aren't performing well in the tropical jungle environment. It was really stupid to send a Puma on a recon mission a day after an attack.
|
GreenandGold:For the last 2 years, Monusco hasn't been paying for Rooivalk, because of UN budget cuts introduced by Trump. So our Rooivalk are used exclusively for FIB missions. And so Monusco has to send out Pumas on reconnaissance missions. I wonder if the Ukrainian Hinds are still there? |
jl115:There's a reason our Oryx are always escorted by a pair of Rooivalk. |
Lurker4Long:UN helicopter crashes in DR Congo, killing eight peacekeepers aboard Eight UN peacekeepers – six Pakistanis, a Russian and a Serb – were killed Tuesday when a Puma helicopter crashed in the troubled eastern Democratic republic of Congo, UN and Pakistani officials said. “While undertaking a reconnaissance mission in Congo, 1 PUMA Helicopter crashed. Exact cause of crash is yet to be ascertained,” the Pakistani military’s media wing said. It added that six Pakistani troops were among those killed. The Democratic Republic of Congo army has explicitly accused Rwanda of supporting an armed rebellion in the east of the vast country, charges Kigali denied on Tuesday. After months of suspicion and decades of mistrust between DR Congo and its neighbour Rwanda, a spokesperson for the North Kivu governor on Monday issued a statement saying the M23 “backed by the Rwanda Defence Force, (RDF) carried out incursions and attacked positions” of the army the previous night. https://amp.france24.com/en/africa/20220329-un-helicopter-with-eight-aboard-crashes-in-democratic-republic-of-congo |

jl115: Denel Dynamics got too ambitious:-day 1: Rooivalk 1 fired, Rooivalk 2 guided and it hit; Rooivalk 1 fired, ground operator guided and it hit. -day 2: Rooivalk 1 fired, Hawk LIFT guided and it hit. Should've been end of demo, but somebody got carried away ![]() -unscheduled day 3: Rooivalk fired and Gripen guided and missed by a few metres. Typical Saffer chutzpah but shouldn't have been attempted at a public demo. Do the experimentation at AFB Overberg, fine tune it and bring the flawless product to an industry and defence attache-attended demo. Would've been something if they'd successfully pulled it off though! ![]() |
3verblazing:1) the Mercator map is wrong, doesn't truly convey sizes due to dimensional limitations; 2) Russia has no huge influence on the world economy; besides oil and gas, it really doesn't produce anything anybody wants.

Toju200:Excellent! More like this please! Don't understand people showing us corpses. |
Nemesis4you:Yes we are. The CSIR, various universities and some private enterprises are doing some excellent work. Incidentally, our firm's venture capital division is mulling over funding a startup in the field. To whet your appetite, here's the latest breakthrough from the 2nd ranked university in Africa (my alma mater is No.1; was 2 when I was there and overtook the current No.2; 6 SA universities in the Top 10 ):- the layman's article: https://www.newframe.com/phd-student-cracks-high-dimensional-quantum-code/ - the Nemesis article: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-021-25447-0 |

You could have waited a little bit more and he would have written his antiRussian bias with red paint all over this place
.. no wonder they are able to have such huge influence on the world economy
