This is Lagos, a virtual University for other States.
The deadly Inferno that claimed lives in Lagos is very sad and heart breaking. The ever vibrant governor of Lagos would deal with this issue scrupulously as usual.
If this unfortunate incident had happened in other states, some confused and frustrated fellows would have been posting trash like Buhari is enjoying in his 'palace' while a whole state is burning. One jobless person with 2MB data would find a way to make 'politics' out of this just to blame the President.

In organized societies, where traffic is a major issue, tankers and heavy duty vehicles move at night or at specified times. In developed climes, MOT agencies... are as serious as the police force. In and even then, fuel and transportation of inflammable contents are done in controlled methods. We are a Lawless country. If government tries to organize these same tankers now, they will go on strike, shut down the economy and day to day running, and we will let them continue. Same thing with teachers... try to get them to go get retrained and be bwtter qualified to teach, they will strike and wr are back to status quo. We do not punish people who even chop monies meant for projects. Projects that have been captured in the budget and monies released. The same people who chop the monies will now be in the ruling party and to prosecute them becomes a No No. And as nothing is done to them another person will do it. Just imagine. Nigerians died today because of avoidable precautions and failure to create policies and laws that have consequences that could have detered that tanker from being on that road. But no. Law makers dont care. The Executives no send and the JUDICIARY is not jailing them. Bet me, more tankers will fall. Nothing will be done. Nothing.

Femi Fani-Kayode, former Aviation Minister, on Wednesday, said the time was right for Yorubas to demand the breakup of Nigeria and creation of Oduduwa Republic.

He noted that the current killings allegedly being perpetrated by armed herdsmen was an indication that Yorubas must call for secession.

In a series of tweets, the former Minister stressed that people of the South West could no longer be part of Nigeria because President Muhammadu Buhari allegedly opposes restructuring.

Fani-Kayode wrote: “Any Fulani man that refuses to openly and unequivocally condemn the slaughter, ethnic cleansing and mass murder of Middle Belters, southerners and other Nigerians by Fulani herdsmen is no friend of mine. As a matter of fact such a person is a mortal enemy.

“Thank God that I am Yoruba. I was born Yoruba and I will die Yoruba. ‘Omo karo jire ni mi!’ And with the way things are going in Nigeria, I think that it is about time for the Yoruba to exercise their right of self-determination and consider the establishment of Oduduwa Republic.

The Federal Government Wednesday dismissed the Brookings Report on Nigeria as the new global headquarters of poverty as it now has the highest number of poor persons in the world. Findings by the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit public policy organization based in Washington, DC, America, published a week ago indicated that Nigeria has overtaken India as the country with the largest number of extreme poor in early 2018 with six persons becoming poor every minute.

The report said,


“At the end of May 2018, our trajectories suggest that Nigeria had about 87 million people in extreme poverty compared with India’s 73 million. What is more, extreme poverty in Nigeria is growing by six people every minute, while poverty in India continues to fall”,

But responding fielding questions from State House correspondents after the weekly Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investments, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah, argued that the indices used for the report may have been complied when Nigeria was in recession .

His words:

“I think first, we need to understand when we get these reports, there are reports that are lagging in indicators which means, people are reporting on history. There are reports that are leading indicators which means that they are forward looking and of course, there reports that capture generally what you do which is current. “They are actually dealing with what is current. So, when you get reports from Brooking institutes or all sorts of people, you need to look at the context. Somebody may have written a report when we were in recession.

Remember that if you are in a recession, what it means is that even though, your population is growing, people don’t stop procreating, your growth fact, which means that in theory depending on how they run those numbers, you will be going the other way. “There is absolutely no question that there an urgency to create employment in Nigeria. And it has to be a collective responsibility.

What I can tell you, with certainty based on ones background in business and economics, is that if we complete the things on infrastructure and you implement these reports we are doing, that is what I mean by a leading indicator, poverty will go down. “There is no magic to it. But you have to do it first, you have to put in the infrastructure, you have to implement the economic programme which is what will create the opportunities, they don’t drop from the sky.

So, I think we should roll up our sleeves as a people and do the work because, if we don’t do it, our people continue to bear children obviously, they would get poorer. “So, I don’t think we should kill ourselves that poverty is something just happen. I think it comes out of the urgent need we have as a country which is why we are focusing as a government to make sure that we create the enabling environment, the infrastructure and the things that are required to create opportunities for our people and I believe that will happen in the process of time.”

Congratulations are in order of three Nigerians who were on Tuesday night, honoured by Queen Elizabeth faraway in the United Kingdom. The Nigerians: Hauwa Ojeifo, Isaac Ezirim and Kennedy Ekezie-Joseph were presented the prestigious Queen’s Young Leaders Award in a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace, London.

According to reports, the Nigerians received the awards in honour of the work they are doing to transform lives in their respective communities.

Meghan Markel and Prince Harry (The Duke and Duchess of Sussex), David Beckham and others were present at the ceremony.

Hauwa Ojeifo, one of the three winners, runs a women’s support group called She Writes Woman. The group focuses on mental health support and outreach among some of the most vulnerable people in the community.

Isaac Ezirim, also one of the winners, is the founder of Teens Can Code. His initiative concentrates on teaching teenagers computer coding and how to build web and mobile applications using the same tools used by professionals in the tech industry.

19-year-old Kennedy Ekezie-Joseph is the youngest of the winners. He is the founder of the Calabar Youth Council for Women’s Rights (CYCWR). This initiative works to promote women’s rights in Nigeria and supports the rights of women in the areas of female genital mutilation (FGM), domestic abuse, forced child marriage and access to education for girls.

Senator Abubakar Sodangi, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has said he is confident that the South- East will region will vote for President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Sodangi, a three-term senator who represented Nassarawa West from 1999 to 2011 in a chat with DAILY INDEPENDENT said though the region did not vote for Buhari in the 2015 presidential election, they will do so now because the president has done a lot for them in the last three years.

He also advised the South East to join APC which according to him is the winning team rather than remaining in the opposition.
“I believe the South- East will go with Buhari in 2019 because there have been lots of changes since 2015. Buhari has come to demonstrate that he is not the leader of the APC or only those who elected him, he is the president of the whole country even in the South East”.

“What matters to him is delivery of dividends of democracy and creating peace and tranquility. That is what he is advocating in all the lands, especially in the South East”.

“I want to believe that South East will join other regions that will go with President Buhari. It is always good to join the winning team than to be a loser and to be in the opposition” he said.
