sassy92: No it's not a joke. Asking someone to read from page 1 is of immense benefit thats why we recommend it. Those of us that take our time to answer others, where did you think we got the knowledge from? By reading the previous parts of this thread. If there's one thing I've learnt from this German waka is that knowledge is key. If you don't want to stress yourself and read from page 1,that's fine. But don't insult us for giving you advice and don't blame anyone for not answering your question because we don't want to repeat ourselves again. Well said... When I started this waka I remembered that for two weeks I was reading night and day.that was how I got information from this page to advice others. If u are not ready to read, this waka to stress u oooo. My advice is that do ursef some good and read.u also go become guru when u are through. Trust me. |

centuryman: Pls, can you expand a bit on the bolded? Thought I read somewhere where it's said that one's spouse can join during active studies (bachelor or master) as long as one meets the condition for hosting a family. Pls, kindly shed more light on this. Thank you She can join u if both of u can provide good some of substance... That's u should have access to rough 5m to spend for her .this money is beside the 4m u would have already deposited for ur student blocked account.then if u have a child, u would pay more than 5million when they are joining u.this is because ur wife is not applying as a student so she won't have access to cheap insurance policy. She would have to take a comprehensive policy. There would be no free transport to some areas that students have access to for her. You need money to rent a bigger apartment for the family... All this aside, she can work limitless hours to support u.this is the only beauty. If u can afford 10m plus then she can go with u. If not apply for a PhD that has sponsorship so u could go with her. Or let her stay behind for just two years and visit u within the two years visa period before she finally join u later when u are through with ur studies. Sleep over the options and start ur application immediately before the deadlines... Good luck. Edit: if u can't get a sponsored PhD, take the masters. She can be visiting within the two years period until u get ground financially, u fit then carry her go finally. Two years no de long ooo. |

hiplus: Thank. I will give it a shot. Getting another Masters is not a good idea for me because I want my family to go with me immediately. Unless you are saying they can come along when I leave? They can come with u if ur wife is also applying as a student... If not,she has to wait till the end of ur two years masters when u apply for the parent resident permit of 18months,then she can join u on family reunion Visa. Its worth the shot to apply anyway. I guess u know the steps to applying for a PhD. They are different from masters. If u are going for structured PhD start the application immediately but if it not structured PhD, u can apply anytime after finding a supervisor. Good luck bro... |

odimbannamdi:

First of all, i wasnt the one who responded to you with that list of schools. Hadampson did. I doubt i will ever make a list of schools to spoonfeed someone who will be going for studies where a lot of personal research is emphasized. Afterall, the schools i applied to, no one recommended them to me. I sweated my ass on daad and Google to get them.
Secondly, i am taken aback at your sense of entitlement. Someone took the pains to respond to your request with a list that is so detailed that i even had to star it for my future reference, and the least you could do is to make such nasty remarks?
Keep waiting for people to make further list for you, you hear. One of my schools closed their application portal since October 15th. More will close by November. By the time you wake up, Summer applications will be closed. Keep waiting bro.
Nonsense! Lol... |

hiplus: Let me break it down. I have been offered admission into DBA(Doctor in Business Administration program in the UK, so I understand the research proposal part. The DBA is a 4year program and I can move with my family immediately.
I have completed a Masters program in the UK few years back when you have to come back after studies.
I just need a change in environment from UK hence my interest in Germany which I am fairly sure I will get the admission. Also i appreciate the free tuition and stipends coming with German studies.
UK allows you to come with family immediately, so I had assumed it was same for Germany.
Thanks for your response. The thing is German university are tuition free so they usually don't care the country u got ur masters from...unlike the UK where u pay school fees. They even pet u.when u send ur proposal to a supervisor or a professor in Germany, most of the reply I get is "" u have a wonderful proposal but we already have enough students " . I tried this for a year until I met a kind professor who told me to apply for a second masters because most times, the supervisor usually absorb students from master classes with good research proposal before considering external students if they still have space. This is my personal experience... That doesn't mean u shouldn't try ur luck with d application. Bear in mind that u can apply for PhD without language test certificate. At the PhD level most things it's not a big deal. All the best. |

sassy92: First I think you should concentrate on gaining admission. PhD admission in Germany is not so easy. You'll need to write research proposals and mail it to various professors in schools there. And if they're interested they'll contact you for PhD. Most PhDs are fully funded. Check daad.de for openings. Once you secure admission taking your family over shouldn't be a big deal. @sassy92 u are definitely right. I tried that shit for a whole year with no success until I was advised by a professor in Hamburg university to apply for a masters program and have the opportunity to show my proposal in person to a prospective supervisor when I get to Germany. |

Immafrank: SOME USEFUL TIPS If you are having doubts about maybe the embassy saw/read your sent e-mails or not in instances like- sending of confirmation of BA, making inquiries concerning visa delay or other inquiries at alien offices of your intended cities. You can use google mailtrack to track your e-mails (Gmail users only), whenever the embassy or any individual read your emails, it will show a double tick and number of times your email was read and a single tick if it has not been read (you get notification for this, you can disable if you want to).
http://help.mailtrack.io/customer/en/portal/articles/1385608-installing-mailtrack
That is the link to setup google mail track on PC. Note that you have to install google chrome on PC and send the email (gmail) from google chrome but you can check with mobile after sending if it has been read. There are also android mobile set up which i am not very conversant with but for iPhone users, simply download Track - Email Tracking (the app icon is a green capital T ), install and follow up instructions. you can send messages to your friends to test it.
Futhermore, for people coming this winter, Buy Jeans in 9ja, there are some good stores in 9ja with good thick jeans, One low quality jean is 29 euros up here, except you are OBO. Budget about 50-100 euros for good and warm winter jacket, gloves and money for winter shoes esp for places that snows heavily, it doesn't really snow in Berlin compared to Munchen. Get ready to buy thick Duvet. Sometimes you have to close eyes and buy good stuffs, and stop converting to naira when you wanna buy stuffs, it helps sometimes. If you are coming around November to December, you have to get some warm wears from 9ja, else you will perish in cold from the airport. Get 2 mouth extension, change your laptop cable to 2 mouth (not the powerpack, you know what i mean), bring bed spread and curtain, clipper, flashdrive, bring flipflops, liquids are not allowed on the plane but some people travelled with palm oil (make sure to tie it very well and wrap it), if you are using BA, come wit about 400-500 before you unblock, if you are SL, budget about 2k for the first 4 months depending on the city, remember you start spending euros from the airport. Don't bring unnecessary stuffs like rice, spag, salt, sugar. Bring garri and noodles and condiments like maggi and curry.
For Travels and movement in DE: Download the DB Navigator for general travels (Train, buses, Tram, etc.) and if you are coming to Berlin, download the BVG Farhinfo app (its shows you the fastest route and how to navigate easily. I will say google maps is mostly important for directions on short distances and to know durations of long and short distance travels as well. It is important to have mobile internet on your phone if you are new to a place and going out. There is also FlixBus, it is like a subsidized bus travels mainly from cities to cities and to some EU countries.
For residence permit- for cities where you have to wait about 1 month before you get your card, and that is after 1-2 months before you get appointment in some cases, and you know you need work to survive, you can ask your RP officer on the day of your appointment to give you a temporary work permit, it is like an A4 paper with all your details including passport photo and it will be stamped, the paper will state that you had applied for a RP and the type of permit you will get including the number of days you can work which is 120 full day or 240 half days in a year. First thing first is to get an accommodation which is a prerequisite for city registration and issuance of a RP.
For health insurance, its a 2 way thing, the school will say public health insurance if you are not up to 30 years and private if you are more than 30, my guys not up to 30 years are using Mawista 33 euros monthly and it was accepted. Don't know how they did that but you can make inquiry from your school. TK and AOK is around 107 euros monthly. But public is better than private, if you fall off a bicycle or get hit by a car or have a serious ailment, the public like AOK pays everything but if you are using private, you will pay yourself at first and the private will reimburse some back depending on your insurance subscription with them which you must provide proofs for and trust me, and trust me these treatments are expensive.
And lastly, learn the language while you can, in big cities like Frankfurt, Munchen, Berlin, you might not really need it but in small cities, man you mostly need it to get a job at least A2 level. In all, you need the language to be open to more opportunities. if you will be staying in Bremen, Stuttgart, Rastatt or areas closer there or if you have friends living there that you can stay with, you can always apply for vacation job at Daimler Mercedes-Benz, for working students, they pay 15 euros per hour and you get to work 35-39 hours weekly depending on your contract (Do the Math) and you cant combine it with school work, thats why its called vacation jobs. Here is the website for Daimler Mercedes-Benz: https://www.daimler.com/career/job-search/ from position type, click vacation job. For Amazon Job: Amazon.force.com For general job search: de.indeed.com For buying of used stuffs like gadgets, and also job search in your area: https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de Use google chrome browser for opening these sites when you get here for auto translations to German
When you get in, open N26 bank, one of the best online banks here. Activities are online, no bank branches, Fast and easy, Banking app is in English, its is also free including free ATM cards Downloading of movies, and some games w/ copyright are illegal here, a German bro was fined 13,000 euros for movies download... imagine they fine you that one, you don die be that!!
ALL THE BEST GUYS!! Thanks for the share |

Saysay01: Hi All, I will like to say a few things. 1) Research on the school you are going to. For example, I should have asked about the studentenwerk in my school because Gottingen studentenwerk has a 6 Months to 1 year waiting period (I kid you not), some year 2 people are still on that list. For people going to places where you have long waiting period like me, apply to studentenwerk as soon as you get your admission letter.
2)Learn the Language: It cannot be over emphasized, you have a better chance of getting office Jobs.
3) Most importantly (I am speaking for people in Gottingen), please if you borrowed money for this trip, I don't think (my opinion) that you can start returning it the next month. Let me explain how it works. When you get here, you need to go to the Rathaus to do your city registration and for that you need your international Passport and Landlord's house contract. I got here on the 16th of Sept, I just did my city registration today because I just got a Landlord's contract. After this, you will now be scheduled for Residency permit, I know people that are scheduled for Oct 21st, and you cannot work without that permit. That is to say, you cannot start working till Nov. So, don't come empty handed, bring money that will last you at least 3 Months. Thank you dear...I defer my admission to summer semester. Hope to see u soon.I have already applied to studentenwerk since July... I never even hear anything from them.I hope they answer me before the start date of summer semester. |

Saysay01: Today makes it exactly one week since I left for Germany. I am here to share some things I wish I knew before I came.
1) Learn the Language: it will help you in your every day waka, most especially for those already working in Nigeria. I heard of someone working with an insurance company in Nigeria that got to Germany, googled insurance company around and was able to get a PROFESSIONAL job(Language was still a barrier but he was lucky)
2) Don’t bother bringing rice, oil, salt. All these things are very cheap here
3) please bring earpiece, extra charger and the likes (Electronic goods) seem to be expensive over here.
4)to be very honest, Most (not all) of the Jacket you will get in Nigeria cannot do anything against the cold. I would advise you save the money and come buy one or 2 over here.
5) If you have laptops, bring it.
6) I don’t know about the big cities but I am in a small town (Göttingen) and bicycle is the way of life here. People cycle EVERYWHERE. Learn how to ride a bicycle.
7) if you have time, learn driving and German. These things are really expensive to learn here. I’m talking over a thousand Euros.
In class, I also noticed that the Nigerian students (myself included) find it difficult to speak out while the whites are free with the lecturers. Please start practicing in the mirror and try to speak out in class.
Fun fact: The other day I used one Euro coin to buy something and the cashier gave me my change, I cried a little.
Overall, please be a good ambassador of Nigeria wherever you are and learn to highlight the positive part of Nigeria. God bless us, God bless Nigeria and God bless Germany. Thanks for the info. I am deferring till summer. I will be coming to Göttingen... |
