I'd like to know, if you don't mind sharing via private message.

The copy attached to the permanent residence permit served its purpose - "verification for ID purpose". Applicants have been strictly requested at the citizenship/naturalization desk to provide proof of permanent residence obtained after becoming eligible for naturalization
Looking at it now, I see your point, but then this would easily be lifted as soon as COVID19 restrictions are lifted, not a problem at all

TravelRe: General South Africa Visa Enquiries by madejibo: 6:15am On Jun 08, 2021
I know about the 90 days thingy but I can't discuss the solution here on Nairaland
As per the proof of permanent residence, I had it with my PR and it was a requirement for my ID, I doubt if the process has changed

Omix2:
Welcome back to the thread!

Quick heads up:

Apparently, an applicant for naturalization is required to not have been away from the republic for more than 90 days in each of the 5 years preceding application date.
In addition, proof of permanent residence is part of the required docs for applying for naturalization. DHA only accept naturalization applications when a proof of permanent residence has been attached to the application. Processing times for proof of permanent residence via VFS has been reported as 12+ months.
Unfortunately, applications for proof of permanent residence are currently not being accepted at VFS, as DHA has indefinitely suspended all new permanent residence related applications since March 2020.

Kindly check resources to confirm any further requirements to consider in your plans.

Regards.

Good Afternoon guys, I was on this thread some years back, I left after a while but I am glad that this thread have grown.
Then I used to proffer solutions to people's visas enquiries for free, a few contacted me privately, which I helped. I am a PR holder of South Africa with an ID since 2015, I qualify for a citizenship now, but since 2016, I have been in and out of South Africa, in fact the whole of 2020, I didn't enter SA. I have investment in SA, been there twice this year already in 2021, would be going there later this year to reside for a while and apply for my citizenship and with the way Nigeria is going, it is about time to take my South African citizenship more seriously.
So hit me up with any questions, I would help

boritza:
The accusations you level against the Nigerian Union are severe, and if they are true then it's a shame indeed. But my experience of the Nigerian Union in South Africa, certainly in the KwaZulu Natal province, and in Pietermaritzburg has been different. Nigerians are generally offered needed help by the Union and one prominent member, Chris Ifeacho, has been outstanding in using NUSA as a tool to offer needed help. About the issue of getting a passport, I don't know what you mean by having a US dollar account - this is totally false! I paid for my passport myself using my South African bank account to which a credit card is linked. I can attest that some debit cards can accomplish this too. The online system for registration has clear rules regarding payment as far as I know. If anyone decides to give their money to someone to do the payment for them then it's probably the result of ignorance. In Pietermaritzburg where the Union assists with passport issues, people can pay directly themselves or if they need help from the Union, they are asked to pay an additional R400 to the official passport fee. This R400 is used to rent the space at Protea Hotel Edward, where officials of the consulate are hosted for two full days and where Nigerians from the entire province gather. Now you might wonder why they ought to pay R400 because one would expect the consulate to cater for the needs of its officials who go the provinces to assist with passports. The truth is that I don't know - I do suspect that these officials get huge travel bonuses but end up demanding extra money and the Union is made to pay for the Hotel facilities. The rest of the money once payment for the hotel facility has been settled is supposed to go to the coffers of the Union. You might debate about whether this additional fee is too high, but there is no secrecy about what this money is used for. And I don't excuse the underlying lack of transparency and corruption that means that people have to pay an additional R400. But to talk about R2500 as payment is strange, as far as I know. And to talk about systemic corruption within the Nigerian Union in South Africa would need more substance - again, I have only spoken about one province, and I have not claim that there are not individuals within this province that engage in extortion in the name of passports. My point is to make clear the official practice of the Union, certainly in the province I refer, on these matters.

Trust me, I have been victim of the nonsense going on at the consulate office in Johannesburg, and I detest the blatant corruption and lack of responsibility that is openly displayed by people who are supposed to offer help to Nigerians in a foreign country. But I am equally keen to acknowledge where some of our people in this country who are active executive members of the Nigerian Union are going out of the way to ensure that people get the service they need - and here I have to mention Mr Chris Ifeacho who is the provincial secretary of the Nigerian Union in KZN who is working tirelessly to ensure that the most recent difficulties Nigerians experience in trying to convert their licenses to South African one is a thing of the past.

I refer anyone who is reading to my earlier response to the main contributor that gave birth to this thread - Mr Chris Ifeacho was the one who was able to get the Consulate office to provide an alternative avenue -i.e. a fax number - which I have posted on this forum, to the SA traffic department in Pietermaritzburg. People in other provinces experiencing similar difficulty can help themselves to this number to facilitate the conversion of their license.

Many of our officials act shamelessly, but we must also steer clear of lodging blanket allegations that taint badly Nigerians who are contributing positively - and some of them are part of the Nigerian Union in South Africa.
Nigerian Union that has told Nigerians living in SA to come and collect Identity cards, what do we need identity cards for when we have Int'l passports.

Some sanity now appears in our embassy in Johannesburg, thank God for this report.
TravelRe: The Shame Called Nigerian Embassy In Johannesburg, SA by madejibo(op): 8:24pm On Sep 07, 2015
Some Nigerians in South Africa have lamented alleged corrupt practices of officials of the Nigerian Embassy in Ilovo, Johannesburg.

They accused the officials of high-handedness in several things, including the collection of illegal fees for confirmation of driving licenses and passport renewal.

According to them, Nigerians go through hardship to do all these things while their foreign counterparts are given better treatment.

Ayodele Efunsetan (not real name), who is a student based in Johannesburg, told The PUNCH that money was usually collected from Nigerians by the embassy for them to have their driving licenses converted to South Africa’s.

Efunsetan, who has stayed in South Africa for two years, narrated an experience he had while processing a driving license.

He said, “The process is usually very simple. South African authorities will send the Nigerian embassy a message, asking for a confirmation of your Nigerian driving license and after that, the person is issued the South African license.

“My friend stays in Cape Town, and he met someone in the Traffic department of the embassy, who sent a message via an e-mail to the Nigerian embassy three months ago. There was no response. From Cape Town to Johannesburg, it is just 20 hours by road and two hours by flight.

“Since I stay in Johannesburg, I went to the embassy. The workers said they did not receive any message. I told my friend and he pleaded with the South-African officials to resend the message, which they did on August 24.”

Efunsetan said a week after, there was still no response, forcing him to return to the embassy.

He said after waiting for five hours, he was told the official in charge did not resume for duty. He said he was frustrated because he had yet to bribe the officials.

He lamented that Nigerians in South Africa were made to go through harrowing pain for passport renewal. He noted especially that the two men (names withheld), who sat behind the counters, were behind the problem.

“The legal fee for passport renewal is $160, which you pay online with your credit card. But when you get to the embassy, one of the two men will say you must pay an additional 120 Rand, for which there is no receipt. He says if you want the passport fast, you must pay 2,000 Rand, which is about N28, 000.

“If you don’t pay, your may never get your passport even after six months,” he added.

It was learnt that to get a passport, Nigerians were sometimes mandated to get a letter of recommendation from the Nigerian Union in South Africa.

The association, it was gathered, worked for the Nigerian embassy, and in a way, it was an avenue to milk Nigerian citizens in South Africa.

Another Nigerian, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said people were mandated to pay 2,500 Rands to be a member of the group.

“If you want to get a new passport, they will ask you to bring a letter from the Nigerian Union. This union actually works pari pasu with the embassy. And before you get their letter, you must pay 2,500 Rands, which is the registration fee.

“Foreigners, who go to the embassy because they want to travel to Nigeria, get their visa the same day. I asked a foreigner I met at the embassy if he was coming for the first time and he said ‘yes.’ I asked him when he would be travelling to Nigeria and he said the next day. This man got his visa the same day. They call it ‘Express Visa’ and the fee is very high,” he said.

Another Nigerian, who did not want to be identified, said there was a syndicate in the embassy in Johannesburg.

The Cape Town-based worker alleged that one of the two men behind the counter in the Nigerian embassy headed the syndicate and the Nigerian Union was the group’s tool.

He said, “Firstly, you have to have a US dollar account to pay for the passport application online. Because majority of Nigerians don’t have that, the Nigerian Union in South Africa collaborate with officials of the embassy and the Nigeria Immigration to use their personal account to transact the payment of the fee and charge about 600 to 800 Rand.”

This is a matter type we handle here. I suggest the person concerned lodged complaints through the union of Nigerians in SA. I know they are strong and also the person should get full names of these people and make this into a letter forwarded to the Foreign Affairs Minister in Nigeria.

The Union is on Facebook with the name "Nigerian Union South Africa-NUSA"
The Union thrives because of corrupt officials in the embassy, is like reporting the devil to a demon. They both work together. The union on its own is frudulent, at times you will go to the embassy and they won't process your request till you bring a letter from the union, to get a letter you have to pay the union

@op, its sickening how nigerians are treated by fellow nigerians that work at d consulate. I was also at the consulate in illovo sandton on the 18th of august for capturing cus I'm renewing my passport. People that captured before me,some were told to come back the next day to receive their new passport and us(I refused to bribe anyone)were given the date of 23 september for collection. I also asked them why we had to 120rand extra bcus there is nothing like that on their website,it was only one response that I got, u either pay d 120 and get a receipt or u won't be attended to. This one guy came all the way from mozambique bcus nigerian embassy in maputo does not do passport renewal. What a shame. Meanwhile u see foreigners get in and 5minutes later they r out. Even anytime I visit nigeria u see those with foreign passports get their passports stamped with d entry stamp as soon as they join their own queue but those with naija passport r asked silly questions. Thing is they intentionally make d normal process very difficult just to get u to bribe them. It will be just over 3months before I get my passport since d day I submitted my application but if they wanted they can issue u with a passport in less than a day. Which way nigeria/nigerians.
Its is so sad, we just have to speak out

Yesterday: Now getting frustrated: A friend of mine in Cape Town wants to convert his Nigerian Driver's license to South African Driver's license. The process entails the holder of the Nigerian driver's license to take his license to the SA traffic department and apply for SA's license. The SA traffic department will now email the Nigerian Embassy to confirm if the license the applicant has tendered is real. This is where the wahala starts.
My friend followed this process and the SA traffic dept sent a mail to cg@nigeria.co.za for verification since June and up to date no response by the Nigerian Embassy. I was at the embassy (in Ilovo, Johannesburg) two weeks ago I met a very rude embassy official Femi and he went inside claiming that the person in charge said no email was received. I conveyed this to my friend in cape town and he went back to SA Traffic Dept and the officials sent another email on the 24th of August to Nigerian Embassy, yet no reply.

Today 1st of September 2015, I got here at 9 am, I met Femi again he said the woman in charge of such issue hasn't come to work, this is 12 noon SA time she is still not at work, and the embassy closes at 1 pm.

There is a woman here, her passport is missing she has applied since 3 months ago, no response, nothing. She is in tears and can't write exams and all yet the embassy staff are not bothered. Please repost this.

I am still at the embassy am waiting for them to chase me out at 1pm

Today: Still on my visit to the Nigerian Consulate in Ilovo, Sandton, Johannesburg. (I initially posted a story yesterday)

I finally left the Consulate at about 1:40pm yesterday, without any solution to the problem, I was told the woman that checks emails, Mrs Obidi is not in the office (in other words, she didn't come to work yesterday) so every one that had similar issues will have to come back another day. Some people came from Cape Town (cape town is about 20hours by road to Johannesburg or 2 hours by flight), some came from neighboring Southern African countries like Swaziland and Lesotho.
While in the Consulate, the only two members of staff that you are allowed to see are Femi and Ifeanyi. These two guys are corruption personified. I have heard about Femi since my days in cape town, he only attends to people that offer him money, you don't need a sting operation to confirm this. For people who wants to apply for passports, after paying the recommended fees online, you proceed to submit your application to Femi with R120 cash. This R120 cash is not stated anywhere on the website, you don't get any receipt for this R120. Then Femi will tell you if you want your passport application to be attended to you have to pay R2000 (roughly 30,000 Naira).

One interesting thing is if your passport gets missing in SA, you can't get a replacement in SA, they tell such a person to go to Abuja. They can only issue such a person an emergency travel certificate. They can only assist you if that missing passport was printed in SA. They can also assist if you are ready to bribe heavily.

Visas are granted easily to foreigners with little or no questioning, with little or no paper work. Visas are granted and issued on the spot, depending on how much you pay. This is very worrisome. Only visa applicants are allowed to pass through Femi and Ifeanyi. I once passed through Femi and Ifeanyi just to see what happens at the visa application center and I was shocked! Please friends share these around till authorities see this. I am ready to go to any length to defend this, please don't hesitate to quote my name if need be. For now am a resident of Johannesburg, South Africa.
BusinessAccess Bank Impressed Me Yesterday by madejibo(op): 7:45am On Jun 10, 2015
Yesterday, I received a wonderful and top notch customer service from a staff of Access Bank PLC. The name of the staff is simply “Folakemi”. I am rarely impressed with Nigerian bank services, but today was different.
I tried using my Visa card (issued by Access Bank) in a mall in Midrand, SA and the transaction failed. I tried on another terminal, same thing happened. Immediately I knew that my card had been blocked. I called Access Bank’s customer contact center and Folakemi picked up my call. I complained and she kept me waiting on the phone for over 30 minutes (note this was an international call). She insisted several times in between the calls that she will fix it and call me back. I refused to cut the call; my belief (based on past experience with bank staff) was that she just wanted me to get off her case. After about 35 minutes she finally announced to me that my card has been unblocked and I can go ahead with my transaction. She said she will hold on till I finish my transaction so she can monitor the transaction from her end (this surprised me). On the 36th minute as I was walking back into the mall to use the terminal again, my airtime finished, to my amazement Folakemi called me back and waited till I finished my transaction. Of course, the card worked and my transaction was successful.
Well done Access Bank, still feels like a dream.

I laugh when people say we should chase out MTN, DSTV, Shoprite and co from Nigeria.
My question is who will lose more? SA or Nigeria? My opinion we will lose more. First a lot of our citizens will lose jobs and you know the average worker in Naija is feeding 4 people. Businesses will be affected. I as a person detest MTN and I can't use their sim in SA or Naija.
If we drive foreign investors out, the international community will lose confidence in us. We need to talk to our FG to revamp our economy let our people too make money and invest in our country and give these foreign businesses a competition.
A nigerian was given sole right of premiership (Hitv) he squandered both profit and capital today Hitv is history. Standard Bank has over 50% in Stanbic in Nigeria, do you know how many people are employed in this Bank. South Africans come to Naija and add value to Nigeria's economy, they don't come and do menial jobs so I see no reason why we Nigerians should go to SA and "hustle" or become refugees.
That said, there is no justification for Xenophobia and I know no Nigerian has been attacked or killed in this recent attacks.

I don't even know where to start with you.
Just last week, two Nigerian students were murdered in cold blood by xenophobic scums in southafrica.
You think you are safe and secured because of your tiny white collar job.?
Don't worry, the next wave of xenophobia will claim your life and you won't be mourned, you selfish cunnt.
And to think that you can compare the mass deportation of ghanians in the 80s to large scale cold-blooded murder of hundreds of foreigners in south Africa in 2015, shows how pea-sized your brain is.
A nigerian wishing another nigerian dead just because he is expressing his view, shows so much about us!
Nigerian students are killed everywhere in the world including Nigeria does it mean xenophobic?

Nigerians should be the last set of people calling any other country Xenophobic. We are quick to forget that with the support of our democratically elected government, we chased over 300,000 Ghanians away from SA.
Let's give SA some credits, at least SA's govt is not support these attacks, they have condemned it

and you are happy with the rubbish you posted here. So Americans don't have laws....why have they not been killing millions of illegal immigrants there? every prosperous country have one major challenge....how to reduce illegal immigrants. it's impossible to be prosperous and not have them. So because they are illegal the next thing is to start killing them. Thank God you said this is just your opinion. But your opinion my brother is a wicked one
Sir, the laws am referring to here is SA's immigration law, I refered to this laws because a poster said what about hustlers? My response means sa laws does not permit immigrants that are hustlers
Thank you

some nigerians though. Sorry op but are telling us SA is not a xenophobic country or what? Cause even the so few reasonable south Africans have launched a campaign against it(#stopxenophobia) and here you are saying things that are absolutely senseless. And you even concocted your lies that so many nigerians/foreigners are enjoying free education, free blah blah blah. SMH

Anyway you can tell your tales by moonlight to the birds of the sky.

• South Africa is a xenophobic nation
• The whites south Africans are racist
• the black south Africans have this xenophobia against the other africans in their nation.

This is well known fact that every african foreigner living in SA knows and you op is also suppose to know this fact except you are entirely living in the south Africa of Jupiter.
Sir, there is a lot of 419, yahooyahoo in Nigeria, will you conclude that Nigerians are fraudulent?
The average South African is not xenophobic and that's the truth. Those guys that carry out these attacks are criminals using foreigners as excuse to loot.
Yes there is a campaign to stop this attacks, this goes to. Show that a majority want this to stop
