24th April, 2013

The Manager,
Complaints Unit,
G.T.B
Lagos

Dear Sir,
RE: YOUR ACCOUNTS WITH THE BANK
I received two letters from the bank the first dated 19th of April,  2013 and the second dated 23rd of April 2013. The first letter claims that on the 27th May, 2007, I deposited into current account the sum of N10,200.00and in error your incompetent staff (as your letter claims) credited my account with the sum of N102,000.00

Well from records 27th may 2007 was a Sunday and from my little knowledge GtTB Awolowo Branch Ikoyi, do not open to customers as at 2007. When I noticed this I sent a reply on the 22nd of April, 2013 and I got the second, miraculously the bank realised that the date was wrong and another staff had typed the date in error. This letter now stated I deposited the N10,200.00 on the 25th May, 2007.

The two letters claimed immediately I noticed the N102,000, I rushed to the ATM and withdrew N60,000 on the 27th of May, 2007 or 25th of May, 2007 (depending on which letter is true)
Let me state categorically here (like I have always done) I never withdrew such money so, I find your letters very offensive.

Your letters also claimed my account was thrown into debit of N49, 732.17 as a result of the reversal of the  N60,000.00 I withdrew. A debit that accrued interests to N273,732.17  as at today nearly six years later. Your letter also claim I abandoned these accounts because of the debit status. I believe this accusation is false, because I never this debit status till march, 2012, 5 years later through a phone call from Modupe (a staff). In between the 5 years, I have re-activated my accounts twice, transacted with GTB to tunes of millions both in Naira and Dollars, I have given people references for account opening, yet no on informed me of the debit status.

I see your letters as a deliberate attempt to cover up the fraudulent activities of members of staff of GTB bank
Even though you have released my money your bank illegally blocked and have withdrawn the last kobo I have in GTB, I totally reject your letters and this is a stain to my integrity.

Thank You

Ajibola Akinsete

BusinessRe: N818,000 Stolen In A Day At Diamond Bank- ! by madejibo: 8:29am On May 07, 2013
deenee: @ madejibo, I don't work with DB and don't have any affiliations whatsoever with them but we need to be unbiased in our assertions. Also, there is not need to be unruly. It is uncalled for and uncivil. The OP will be questioned if the case is escalated and I can bet you that what he has said here will be totally different from what he will say if interviewed. I do empathize with him on the loss but I will still say that he is economical with the truth. For the OP have you at any point in time made purchases online via a payment platform that is not verified?

Still again, banks don't have access to your ATM pin that is why also you are by default required to change your pin once you get a new ATM card. Secondly the long number on your ATM is blotted out on any invoice containing ATM transactions e.g the print out you get when you make a withdrawal. Even at that, you are expected to destroy such after use.

In most cases, as one poster has put it, the OP maybe by error clicked on a link online that put a virus in his system that gathers sensitive info and transfers to a remote system.

I will repeat again that I am not absolving the bank nor trying to support them but let's listen to both sides of the story before we begin to throw stones.

I hope our "very intelligent nairalanders" will pick up strong learning points from this whole fiasco.
Oga, if a crooked IT staff want to get your pin it is very easy, so easy believe me. ATM pins are the easiest to get, let me tell you of a racket that was on in Access bank late last year, the system was so lapsed that some guys were issuing two, yes 2 tokens to one account, this the customer didn't know it took a while before they stop this fraud. In a perfect system this security checks can't be breached even by the programme writers but in Nigeria this security aren't full proof. Sorry if I used unruly words this kind of things pains me cos I have fallen a victim of bank fraud in GTB, these bank staff are so fraudulent

teemy: he need not be a bank staff to state obvious truths and so no need to attack him. an apology will suffice.
how can he say bank staf can't get access to ATM pins? Even the CCTV can reveal the pins while you type it on the machine. Your ATM card no is known for every transaction so a bank staff can match both together
BusinessRe: N818,000 Stolen In A Day At Diamond Bank- ! by madejibo: 6:37am On May 07, 2013
deenee: It is apparent that a lot of people already have a biased stance against DB and I will say again from experience that the OP has been economical with the truth. What has happened is quite unfortunate but he has only told us his own side of the story and albeit a side that potrays him as the victim.

I will ask again is there any time that you may have supplied your details online, does your wife have access to your internet log in details, is there any possibility that you might have compromised your details at any point in time. The OP must be sure that the crack in the wall that has aided this fraud is not from his own end. It is always very easy to throw jabs at the bank and please don't think that the CBN will automatically compel the bank to refund just because you have filed a complaint, they will also conduct an investigation and I think it will be very embarrassing if at the end of the day, the bank is not to blame.

As regards the token, the bank or any of its staff for that matter cannot have access to your token just as they cannot have access to your ATM pin unless you divulge it
On a final note the token can be bypassed by a very good systems analyst/hacker so total reliance on it will not prevent fraud. The best prevention is never compromise your log in details, routinely change your password and do your internet banking transactions on a secure system and connection.

All the best!
You are definitely a Diamond bank staff. A lot of bank staff hit customers account via Internet banking, IT staff (the crooked ones) can get your ATM pins stop telling us rubbish here, I have worked in a bank before

Sometime in August last year I picked up my brother from the airport enroute VI through Oshodi, mushin, etc, we now stopped at mushin branch of Diamond Bank and my brother in my presence my brother collected $140 over the counter and gave me. The next day my brother called me and asked me how much did he collect I answered with so much surprise "$140" the guy now said $1000 was debited from his account that he collected $1000 more from the same branch. It took series of calls, emails etc before this money was reverse, no proof of such withdrawal, shame on Diamond bank

The account was opened for your wife to make use of the funds, have you confirmed from her the extent she had transacted on the account?
Most of us have accounts with DB and never had experienced this.
oga read the op's story well, he opened the account as a salary account and transfers money to his wife from time to time. So the wife can't use it for transactions

osaworld: something similar happened at GTB warri. the victim left home for gtb warri to withdraw 3m naira. it was also a female cashier that attended to him.

on his drive off, another car double crossed him and the robbers calmly asked 'where's the 3m naira?' he quickly gave them the money. after some retrospection, it occurred to him that the only other person that knew he withdrew 3m naira was the cashier. he quickly stormed the bank and caused an uproar. the bank manager intervened and since he was so sure the cashier was somehow involved, they took her phone and dialled the last number on the phone. the guy at the other end thinking it was the cashier calling for her cut, quickly said sth like 'sister no shaking, your share dey wait you!'
this story was in Access bank but it could have also happened in GTB
BusinessRe: N818,000 Stolen In A Day At Diamond Bank- ! by madejibo: 1:28pm On May 06, 2013
deenee: No apologies, but I think the poster is being economical with the truth. It is possible that he may have filled one of those scam online reactivation forms and in the process provided his bank details to a fraudster. Additionally, it is also possible that he may have been a victim of another scam that is made possible, when you use your computer on an unsecured public WiFi network wherein some people can use some software to access your information on your system. One more question, how reliable is the antivirus and anti-maleware software that you use on your laptop.

I am not exoneratiing the bank but I doubt if Diamond will directly steal money from your account. If they want steal they will hide it behind an intricate web of charges and commissions and take it over a long period of time and not in quick successions.

Either way, you have the names of the beneficiaries and the banks why don't you try and conduct an independent investigations

All the best
This kind of fraud is committed by staff of the bank most especially the IT staff. All these your so called secured codes and passwords these IT people have access to it

cdz: Madejibo, your analogy is interesting. But imagine applying the bolded to Abati - and his kind.
I can't do an Abati kind of job if I was Abti himself, because before his current job he was a known face. Another reason is I can't come out openly and start lying all in the name of a job. In Saka's case no truth no lie was said about his porting. It is strictly business.
PhonesRe: Saka 'Ported' From Etisalat To MTN: The True Story Emerges by madejibo: 8:44am On Apr 25, 2013
cdz: This is interesting. I was just wondering: why is it okay for Saka to port and wrong for Reuben Abati to do the same if the reason for Saka's action is that MTN pays more than Etisalat? Both cases involve switch of loyalty for personal (as opposed to ethical) gain.

In an effort to justify Saka's action someone on this thread referred to how a Pepsi truck driver was portrayed as drinking Coke in a Coke advert. That's different - he's just a faceless truck driver and not a brand ambassador. Which Pepsi brand ambassador have you seen advertising for Coca Cola? Do you think that Coke couldn't afford to pay them more?

I'm not quite sure of the official ethical position of the advertising profession on Saka's action but I know that as a person of conscience, there comes a time when you have to say no to a bigger pay simply because the offer clashes with your ethics and negates what you hold to be right and good and true. Saka may make money from this move BUT I'm afraid it won't last for long because with this he has shot himself in the foot as a brand.

Think about it: if you own a business and you have a fierce rival, would you rather be the first to employ Saka in your ads or wait for your competitor to use him first so that you can reap maximum second-comer benefits as MTN is doing? We all seem to agree that the smart thing is to do as MTN has done. One more question: while you and your rival in business wait to see who will use Saka first and lose, what will Saka be surviving on? Disloyalty is a serious flaw for any public figure and Saka will have to live with that tag for the rest of his advertising career.

I have always seen adverts as entertainment and nothing more. They never influence my choice of purchase. However, any discerning consumer will understand that the move by MTN is an act of desperation which actually does, in a certain twist of irony, portrays Etisalat in good light as a veritable threat to the MTN business. And so if I were to go by adverts in making a choice, I'd choose Etisalat because the crowd will go with MTN on sentiments. I mean, why didn't MTN consider Saka before the porting era?

I am more interested in the dynamics that accurately assign judgments of right and wrong to the actions of men. Saka's actions is similar to Abati's: both are cases of a betrayal of trust for personal gains. Saka advertising for MTN is like some Nollywood characters accepting money and advertising a presidential candidate that they cannot in conscience vouch for. That for me is just so low. I mean, there comes a time when moral conscience just has to say NO to money. And until we cross that bridge as Nigerians, there's no point blaming the politicians or anyone who ever stole from us.
sir, what if Saka had no contract with Etisalat, should he have rejected Mtn's offer? We all change jobs, RVP moved from Arsenal to Man Utd heaven didn't fall, let's leave sentiments aside. I am so happy for the guy, very happy, this guy started from no where yet he is a big star today.

Jarus: With or without Saka, MTN and Airtel, especially 0803 and 0802, still remain choice lines, kind of status symbol. There is this perception of Glo and Etisalat as poor people's network.
I have ported to etisalat and I still have my 0803 number, class not destroyed only transferred

gluv01: Lol...Mr Saka Saka..I like this man. cheesy

Btw, did his contract with etisalat expire without renewal?
even if his contract didn't expire am sure MTN will be ready to pay the penalty for him, there is always a buyout clause

madejibo: Seen this letter before still makes absolute no sense to me because I still don't know how I withdrew the claimed 60, 000. In your letter to me dated April 19, 2013, you stated I deposited the sum of 10,200 and your staff wrongfully posted the sum of 102,000 on the 27th of May 2007 and I withdrew the money on the same day via ATM, please NOTE that 27th of May, 2007 was a Sunday, makes me wonder if Gtb opens for customers on Sundays as at 2007. Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th of May, 2007 were public holidays declared by the Obasanjo government to celebrate President Yaradua's inauguration.
Between 2007 till date I have re activated my accounts twice and no one brought this to my notice. No one. It's either you have employed incompetent members of staff or your bank is very fraudulent. I was never for one day called that there is a debit in my account.
Your letter claims I used an ATM to withdraw 60, 000 and my account had a debit balance of 49, 732.17 on may 27, 2007 (Sunday) and up to march 2012 no one has called me. I guess you have bunch of either incompetent or fraudulent staff. Till today no proof of such ATM withdrawal.

I really hope you look at this, I went into a meeting with your staff on the 5th of April this year and they lifted the ban on my savings account (that was blocked due to the debit in my current account) left to me this is an admittance of error. I have since removed my last kobo from your bank but I will do everything to clear my name.

If I was running from your bank like your letter claimed, I wouldn't have transacted millions of naira through your bank between 2008 and 2012, and thousands of dollars through my domiciliary account.

For a bank I highly respected so much in the past to make false accusations about me is a big shame.

Thank you,

docjuli: @madejibo any update?

Pele ooo.
I have been able to withdraw my money left in my savings account not without paying 100 naira because I don't have an ATM (an ATM have no been issued), on the debit in my account they have said they will get back to me on further investigations, by and large they have been wonderful and I must commend Mr. Osa openly for a wonderful job but honestly I can't put a penny in that bank again, I can't also recommend the bank to my friends but I can recommend to my enemies so that their blood pressure will increase.

nikkyshyne: Let him ask for a statement of account.
once it is a fraud committed by a staff it will definitely be in his bank statement, so bank statement isn't a proof that money wasn't stolen from his account.

dimcee: The op į̸̸̨§ just a thief, an average thief tha reap where they dont sow, your account was erroneoudsly credited and U̶̲̥̅̊ ran to atm to withdraw the money and i believed they called you to fund your account which made U̶̲̥̅̊ abandoned your current account and continue using only savings. We are not fools on nairaland bro, if you have a valid case plz sue the bank and stop making cheap 419 cry here.
I am sure this what Gtb told u to come and write to save face, its left for them to prove otherwise. I don't need to prove my innocence.
