Is Kyle XY good? The Wastelands I only vaguely recall; it followed The Drawing of the Three, the stunning second book after The Gunslinger. Wizard and Glass, book 4, is where I stopped, and it's marvellous. I stopped watching CSI when its eye candy died in Grissom's arms in Season 9. His romance with Sally is so antiseptic and passionless ehn. Ddidn't you love the Lady who owned the S&M house of pain almost made a disciple of Grissom ? Was it Lady Hazel? Boston Legal has some of the best writing on TV. A real treat lol. I wonder if Spader is half that interesting in real life. The guy never even went to college but was a truck driver or something. Heroes I stopped watching after Season 1. So juvenile. I stuck to it that long only cos of the unconvincing but gorgeous Indian academic, and of course, Hiro and his best friend. What's Kyle XY about? |
I'm teasing. one might play favourites but how seriously can one take fictional characters like Bond, Bourne and the rest. She's right about how unreal the movies are. And new spies bitching and moaning being a spy isn't like the movies say? Doesn't that make her point? Lol |
Poor man. Lawless country. Senseless lawmakers that won't make laws that make sense. The police won't catch murderers, and they won't let their victims be treated. Human life keeps meaning less and less with time. I don't think there's a law requiring a police report in case of gunshot wounds; It appears to be something the police merely mandated hospitals to do. I never heard of such a law being proposed and debated and passed. And the guy's pulse was still strong, he was still alive. Nigerian hospitals have been infected with the same inhuman callousness that's rotting at the heart of the country's government. If such a law truly exists it is an unspeakable, a horrendous law. Look at all the stories he broke, and without going underground, or his newspaper protecting him in some way. Poor man, you forgot the country you were operating in. Truth is a dangerous business there. |
JeSoul:A beg comot Bond for dat ya Can't Do list. Neo and Batman? lol you forgot Spiderman and Superman and XMen combined ![]() British Intelligence recently complained new recruits have skewed ideas of what their job entailed, from watching spy movies lol. The newbies bitched their work and lives weren't like Bond's. But MOSSAD and CIA and Russian Intel are the real deals man.Amazing spy technology and, esp with MOSSAD, mad skills. |
POC without Depp? Can you believe I haven't read an Adichie book? The Man Died is superb writing, esp the parts chronicling his extended solitary confinement and hallucinations. I couldn't believe the same Arrow who wrote those boring plays wrote it. Ben Okri and Achebe are literary gods. The Famished Road is my favourite Nigerian novel; it's breathtaking and unlike anything any Nigerian ever wrote before. Lol yeah you mentioned your love for Eco. After a steady diet of literary books- Just finished Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go, I switched to commercial fiction for a spell; Gerald Browne's 19 Purchase Street. The man knows how to tell a story. Have you been following Stephen King's Dark Tower series?Books 1-4 may be some of the best books you've ever read. But those who have read the finale, where Roland gets to the Tower, where all realities and all existence converge, say it's disappointing. I pray not. I haven't read Iweala's book. He's a silverspoon kid but I watched his interview; remarkable young man; humble and smart and very grounded. You're really pissed at Naija writers. Do you like any at all? The Famished Road set a Guinness Record? For what? Been watching, when there's time, Sex and the City on DVD. Long stopped following series' while its ongoing lol. You start scheduling your life around them so as not to 'miss' them. And there's all that yeye suspense. I just wait till a season's done and watch the whole thing on DVD, or wait for the end of the entire series. Waiting for LOST to finish it's run next year. What series have you been following? Dexter? Lost? House? Mad Men? Grey's? Desperate Housewives? |
,mama-gee:lol Well Vesc he didn't make Oprah choose his book. And he knows his subject, he's a Jesuit priest working with disadvantaged kids in all the countries featured. You're right; African writers feel they're obligated to write about Africa's issues, that other themes are frivolous given the enormity of the continent's tragedy. Can't blame them too much. When Anton Fuqua made Tears of the Sun he was heavily criticised for inventing fictional tragedy to base his movie on when Nigeria could supply much genuine material. Oh Faulkner was one of those 'influential' American writers, tons of 'heavy' and 'deep' Pulitzer prize-winning horsesh*t. I didn't know you liked Steinbeck. I've had East of Eden for years but never read it. Grapes of Wrath is magnificent, breathtaking, stunning, incredible. Deserving of the Nobel it earned the author. Did you ever read The Man Died by Wole Soyinka? lol does Umberto permit you to read Nigerian writers at all. |
I saw Glenn Close in Damages na. What did she act there? ![]() Michael Emerson is fantastic as Ben in LOST. ![]() Yayyyyy Jon Stewart! ![]() Vesc, you read Steinbeck? Which ones? Oprah's chosen some good books; some weird books. She chose Faulkner, whom I've always found incomprehensible. Never finished The Sound and The Fury- I detest writers who write difficult books for the hell of it, and call that 'art'. Joyce is so incomparably beautiful a writer I don't mind the blood and the tears and the ecstacy of his books. You know Oprah has a thing about African children, esp South African kids, like kids in Darfur aren't worthy of compassion. It is mad people who cause suffering like that in Darfur that makes me know I can kill a human being. I'll end their useless lives without a scruple. Akpan's themes appeal to her, I guess. It's five horrific stories from five African countries, each from the viewpoint of a child. I don't care what she chooses. But hundreds of thousands follow her picks slavishly. Akpan is a rich man now for sure. O kere ju his book'll sell half a million copies. |
He's not possessed. He's a psychopath. Mebbe the child isn't his. Matcheting a child and then going out to get indomie. Anyway sha, trust Nigerian police. Dey too get pickin for house. They'll make him wish he was never born. Oloriburuku man |
Best Guest Actor in a TV series, Michael .J. Fox for Rescue Me Best Guest Actress, Burstn for Law and Order Special Victims Unit Best Guest Actress, Tina for SNL Best Supporting Actress, Comedy Series, Kristyn for Pushing Daisies Best Supporting Actor, Comedy Series, Cryer for Two and a Half Men No idea who won for Best Actress, miniseries or movie, Best miniseries Best Supporting Actor, Drama Best Supporting Actress, Drama, Best Actress, Drama Best Series, Comedy Best Series,Drama Best Variety, Music or Comedy |
Collette is an amazing actress, but United States of Tara freaked me out whenever she 'became' the teenager. I didn't find the show all that funny. Weeds is only mildy amusing; why does it get high ratings for comedy? Meet the New Emmys, Same as the Old Emmies. Same roll call as recent years. Wouldn't have minded Simon Baker or Michael Hall taking home Best Actor for Drama lol. Enjoyed The Mentalist too much jare. Hooked me within twenty seconds, which has to be a new record. Most shows take a few episodes. Even Dexter took several minutes. Fairly predictable winners; though why Justin Timberlake should win an Emmy is beyond me. ![]() |
Still watching only oldies right now. Saw Staircase to Heaven (David Niven) It's WW1. A British pilot destined to die in a plane crash misses his appointment with death because the angel dispatched to collect his soul loses his way in the fog. Unaware he's living on borrowed time, he falls in love and plans a future.Meanwhile the angel has been told to repair his mistakes, and he appears to Niven, freezing time and people, and they have these interesting conversations. Niven is convinced he's losing his mind. Sentimental, chock full of 'old-fashioned' values and glory, and works for me. What do you know? Oprah selected a Nigerian writer's book for her Book Pick, which guarantees instant success for the lucky author. Uwem Akpan's Say You're One of Them. Go Uwem! |
Neurogena products are amazing. No frills, excellent value for money. And always pocket friendly. Bet there are similar products three times the price and not as good. First time I'll hear of this Visibly Even brand. Could've saved me tons of cash if I'd seen this montha ago. I checked it out at Amazon. None with this same packaging. None says retinol; just Essential Soy and pure vitamin c. There's some with spf 30. I just hope it's the same product as I just might switch to this.
|
Lol no I sent a friend to see the thing. He said it was so boring, even his kid kept yawning. |
Sneaky?Lol. Seen anything good lately? District 9? Very little time to see movies.I sent eyes to go see GI Joe for me and they report it's boring. |
JeSoul: ![]() vescucci:Oh they know they went too far with Shawshank. It's a shame they'll never live down. Lol you have to give Foxx kudos for what he pulled off with Ray na. So know what you mean about awesome performances and movies crowding a given year. But the blant politicking's too glaring; no one pretends winning is about merit anymore. It's whoever woos the most voters. I wish they'll give Meryl one or two wins before she retires. The woman is a force of nature, and the finest actress alive. |
Oh yeah. Lol. There are entire websites devoted to his portrayal of villains and they can't give someone so talented a single Oscar nomination. But Halle can shake her ass and get one. |
Lol what are you talking about? |
But the Oscars is the highest industry recognition there is. It’s kudos for excellent work done. It’s a real shame someone like Oldman has never even been nominated. Some of the finest crop of younger actors claim him for their influence. Christian Bale was so overwhelmed about working with him (he’s his hero) on the Batman franchise, he raved about Oldman endlessly. No fair. Another Oscar grouse has gone on my list. ![]() |
See Gary Oldman as a seedy tween lol. Shocked he was never nominated for an Oscar. Fine actor. Vesc, a certain young gentleman needs my attention. Must g-g-g-go. Will return to yer Top 40 tomorrow.
|
What's Roshomon about? Weird title. |
lol like you need a review to go see a Tarantino movie. You know it'll be good. Thankfully there isn't much of the violence he turned into an art form in Kill Bill Vol 1. I've been told it's mature and dialogue-driven, and that there's an outstanding performance in it, but not Pitt's. |
Nice packaging. But what does each do? @Spiked Oh, just hyper. |
Lol Vesc. Excellent whys. 'The Terminator and then came Titanic' for Cameron?Lol you know very well he made Aliens, Rambo: First Blood, Terminator II, The Abyss, True Lies; His movies have about 30 Oscar nominations and about 16-20 Oscar wins. I don't know who's the better action direction between him and Ridley Scott. But he's more visionary in terms of effects; he'd conceived of T1000, the liquid nemesis in T2 in 1984 during the making of T1, but there wasn't the technology to pull it off. Phenomenon is pretty good. It's one of the roles I like Travolta in, shows you how large his repertoire is, that it isn't always the cool baddie. There isn't a single Julia Roberts movie in your TOP 40, though she's your favourite. All those cute movies and you like none; From Pretty Woman to My Best Friend's Weddding? Lol I'm not sure you have a Meryl Streep or Weitz movie listed as well. And what's happening with Weitz? One doesn't see her anymore. Not seen her since Constantine and Enemy at the Gates. What I saw was Bello replacing her in the awful Mummy Returns 3. Eastwood is truly a Master. As is Spielberg and Scorcese. For ET alone, he forever has my heart. It NEVER gets old. I know few movies so magical. My kids are going to watch it and feel exactly as I felt watching it. It's timeless and wonderful. |
@browncoco5 Have you tried Clinique’s Clarifying lotion? Never used it, but someone recommended it, that it’s as good as Makari. Scar removal has been treated in the previous page. Use do it yourself micro-dermabrasion plus MEDERMA or Professional Strength Stretch Mark Remover. It gets rid of scars GUARANTEED. Didn’t use a stretch mark remover, but since it’s a scar too the process WILL remove it. As for hyperpigmentation, I used Meladerm and it worked after four weeks. But there is something else that every woman MUST add to their regime GLYCOLIC ACID 35% PROFESSIONAL PEEL LACTIC ACID 70% PROFESSIONAL PEEL Just apply as directed in the leaflet once a week with a cotton pad to your face and say a permanent goodbye to hyperpigmentation, black spots, skin break outs, skin dullness due to sebum accumulation, and other skin problems. I use the ones by SKIN LABORATORY, and I apply it to the face, bosom and bum. After six applications you will LOVE your skin. Don’t be scared by the ‘acid’ you see. Glycolic acid is gotten from sugarcane. Lactic acid is from sour milk. They’re excellent.
|
I don't use a lot of makeup; just translucent powder, the occasional NARS bronzing powder, eyeliner and lip gloss. Those I get off with any cold cream, so I don't know much about removers. Doesn't Clinique have a clarifying lotion that might work for hyperpigmentation? Products for hyperpigmentation and scars were reviewed in the previous page. I had surgical scars and reviewed what worked for me. It might work for stretch marks too. Or you might try "Professional Strength Formula Stretch Mark Cream for Stretch Marks and Scars " instead of Mederma.Products for hyperpigmentation contains ingredients that stop melanin production; the unsafe one's hydroquinone. What's your skin type and what ingredient might work for your skin? A great face cream with SPF. I'm sure they're out there, but I can only recommend what I've used. Besides the face cream SPF is always low, 10 0r 15, and doesn't give your face the needed protection from the sun.The Sun accelerates skin aging by almost 90%. I learnt the effects don't show for a number of years. Skin cells have 'light memory'. They store up the sunlight received over years of sun exposure. And then it comes out all at once; you wake up one day and it's like you've aged several years overnight and you wonder what happened! I advise you keep using a face cream AND sunscreen, the higher the SPF the better. |
JS, how are you holding up sweetheart? I never saw Roshomon. And you sneakily still haven't furnished the WHYs of your director's choices. Hai. Haven't seen Ghandi or The Maltese Falcon or The Great Dictator. Is your Phenomenon the John Travolta movie, where he was hit by a mysterious light from the heavens outside a bar on his birthday? 3D is like some weird fusion of film and animation. I dislike it intensely and have never finished a movie in the medium. It should just be one or the other. And it's not cos it's new; I first saw computer animation with Toy Story and it was pure awesomeness. I want to kick the monkey that invented 3D. Lol Gamine. You're kidding, right? At least, I hope you're kidding. |
Years ago? She was murdered last week, Vesc. If it's a If I can't have you no one can thingie, I hope the guy gets the needle and the long sleep goodbye. Bastid. We're not done with your list. The directors come with a why, and you haven't given whys. You haven't dropped a Top 40 either. Lol what are you talking about; your opinion does cut it. What do you think the Oscars are about? I take it you saw a pre-LOTR Jackson flick. Honestly, it was like the guy did Directing Juju. Come on. If you really like them the whys shouldn't be hard.@Gamine I know Cameron's doing Avatar in 3D. I'd no idea Spielberg was too. I hope 3D isn't the film medium of the future. |
Poor Annie Le, the Yale grad student who disappeared days before her wedding, was found stuffed into the wall of a building in the school. She'd been murdered. 75% of all psychopaths on earth are in the US.(Of course, they didn't factor in the unique strain of African Rebel who murder women and lop off children's limbs by the thousands.) The girl's just 24. As is her possible murderer. I stopped following the news closely years ago. It'll just drive you insane one horrific news at a time. I dont know why this one snagged my interest. I hoped it would turn out well though I knew it wouldn't. Poor girl. Poor world. Twilight? Is that a movie or a TV series? Vesc, have you explained the whys of your choices? I need some cheering up. Will vanish for a wee bit. |
You have obviously not seen anything Peter Jackson made before LOTR or you wouldn't say they handed him the LOTR thingie cos of that. His passion carried him through, nothing more. As for Snyder, please. You enjoying a movie does not a great director make. I wasn't objecting to Nolan. I was asking a question. He directed Memento? Great stuff, but the screenwriting is the wow factor here. That, and The Prestige, and the two Bats. Not bad at all. J.J is my favourite TV producer. I LOVE all his shows. But he hasn't carved a niche for himself as a director, why's he on the g.d list? Just because you like him? He hasn't earned it; it's people like you who upset one at the Oscars year after bleeding year. |
Lol. I like Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, but I'm not sure Ritchie qualifies as a great director. With those, even if the movies are awful, the art and directing always shines. J.J Abrams?? WTH? He's a screenwriter, created Alias, Lost and Fringe, and he'd directed only one movie, Mission Impossible 3. Aronofsky? Who's he? Boyle's made only two movies I liked; Trainspotting and Slumdog. As for 'Millions', I cringed every time that little boy asked, 'Are yer po'r?' DePalma's hit or miss. Ridely's fantastic. When he gets it right, it's sooo right. You omitted Michael Mann. He's great at mature, intelligent actioners. To look at LOTR you wouldn't believe the crap Peter Jackson had made before that. That's why he had a hard time convincing studios he could pull LOTR off. Apart from the two delicious Batman movies, what other impressive movies did Nolan make? If it's just those, then doesn't Sam Raimi deserve a mention? Scorcese is beyond amazing. And such a humble, graceful man. Quentin makes a mockery of those who spend years in film school. A video store clerk! Talent IS inborn jor. Those Blank Slate proponents can take a flying hike. Cameron; somehow I prefer his action/sci-fi movies. He has the knack, and everything is exactly right. Saw Spielberg's photo as a kid; he was ADORABLE. Who's Snyder? |
Everyone loves old movies. They're mementos of a more innocent, bygone era. Singin in the Rain is wonderful, amongst musical greats like West Side Story and Sound of Music and Top Hat and Funny Girl and the rest. Give me the oldies anytime. Where are the WHYs of your choices? You couldn't even make 12 lol. Eastwood is a better director than he was an actor, and that's saying a lot. And don't insult Ang Lee by making him play wallflower. He's as good as anyone on your list and better than some even. |
I've asked to see the list half a dozen times so I've no idea what 'especially curious' means. What's animation '9'? No time to keep up with stuff anymore. Was waiting for Avatar, though I dislike 3D movies, but have no idea if Cameron's released it yet. Your oldies review suggest put me in the mood for some old movies, and that's all I'll be watching for a while. I just LOVE Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets. And it features the best performance of Helen Hunt's career. Fiendishly witty and funny; but then this guy wrote L.A Confidential. Yup. Old movies for me for a while, starting with Singin' in the Rain. |
