huxley:1.He called himself the Son of God, said He could forgive sins if he wanted, and other things blasphemous to pious, pristine Sanhedrin ears A prophet was fine by the Jews, Son of God, nay. 2.You'd have to cite Roman Law then in force. He was accused of Blasphemy and it was enough for the powerful Jewish religious leaders who wanted to see his end. The judge had a province to govern, and didn't want trouble. They were baying for his ehad and he gave it to them. 3.As a follower of Jesus now, but an ordinary Jew in those times, I would have called for his head with the rest. If you meant a follower of Jesus in those times, I'd watch what would happen and see if he would resurrect like he said. I'd have a stake in his doing so, and so wouldn't wander too far from the proceedings. What's your point? |
Jedi Bond! Hey ya! Oh I've forgiven them for not including the said rugged Brit. I'm sure they won't make that mistake again.Well, the music is marvelous, where the cops are chasing the kids.I think it was Jai Ho. The directing is excellent.Boyle succeeds so well in showing the innocent but very real cruelty of which children are capable. Excellent cinematography; the visuals are stunning. But I'm not sure some of the critics don't have a point. If a Hindi filmmaker had made this movie, it would not have generated all this buzz. Great movie, though. The Indian Govt said the real-life slum kids have brought them honour, and gave them free houses. Not the filmmakers. The boy who acted Jamal's brother as children lived under some bridge or something with his father who had TB. They were merely exploited by the filmmakers. After much noise Boyle said they had set up an education fund for the kids, which will take care of their education when they turned 18.Nonsense. ![]() |
A puzzle to my bloodthirsty brothers, who cant get enough of porn and horror, and haven't succeeded in making an addict of me, though they haven't stopped trying. I caught the suckers watching porn when we were teens and I asked them what they saw in the thing. They said, Ah, it's very sweet, there's a story in it, it's just like an ordinary movie, only they're naked most of the time. You'll like it. Watch. It was supremely gross. So I just tuned out or read a book when they were watching the yeye thing, or confisticated it outright. But some of their horror I watched. The most horrific was Cannibal Holocaust, which I spotted at my brother's. And the yeye guy now has a kid o! After giving him hell about that I watched it, and it was HORRIFIC!!! Why isn't Omen up there? You've seen it, haven't you? |
This is actually the first time I'll hear 'Fristfruits'. Christians are supposed to give their first salaries to the church? The truth is that there is so much ignorance existing in the christian community today which is actively encouraged by the leaders they don't allow you to question any thing they tell you you just have to accept it whether it as sound biblical basis or not and this is very dangerous becos it leads to abuses and this is why several unscriptural things have found their way into the church and been instituitionalized over the centuries. You would be amazed how many things we hold as doctrine that you wouldn't find in scripture. Benny Hinn preached to his church one Sunday, that Christians are 'little gods' and something else about nine spirits. Some of his church members went to see him and tell him his teaching was unscriptural, and they proved it to him. You know what he did the following Sunday? He apologised to his church for the teaching the previous week, said he got carried away or something, and asked their forgiveness. Isn't his humility refreshing? Imagine if it had been Nigeria. Nobody would think Daddy's teaching was wrong, much less dare to tell him so. Everything they say is divine, though we have a Bible and are supposed to examine their teaching by the light of the bible. That's why the unscrupulous take advantage of innocent Christians. But you know, not all Pastors teach tithing to get money. A few teach it because that is what they were taught in pastoral schools. They sincerely believe Christians should tithe, as if God's love and blessing is conditioned upon tithing. Only the Jews are subject to Jewish laws anyway. And Paul tells them in Romans 6 that as Christians, Jews are no longer subject to the law. 13. Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. 15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means |
First born. Four great younger brothers. Love being first born o. As kids you did as I said or it was Total Annihilation.Don't mind the responsibility so much, though if you're a first born you'll soon notice your parents push more responsibility on you than you'd like. |
Haven't seen half the movies on the list.Thank God! Where's the Omen trilogy,The Thing and Cannibal Holocaust? |
When you were busy calling poor Del Toro periwinkle mouth. I couldn't help a snicker. But Del Toro has charm. He's cute and has dated some beautiful actresses.I read that the kids used in Slumdog, playing Jamal and Lithka as children, are actually from the slums in Mumbai, and that they were paid peanuts for their work. The director said that was more than four times what adults in the area earned in a month. |
I'm sorry, but both your posts made me laugh. What masks would that be? I believe God created the world. That makes me a creationist, no? But I take exception to science being demonised. If a few scientists have an agenda, that's their problem. On the other hand if I choose to think God didn't create the world, I have a right to do so, don't you think? It's all right to have people have think differently from you, you know. Who were the eyewitnesses to God creating the world in the Bible, and wrote the accounts? The Eden story in Genesis may be symbolic or literal, or it may be both. Who knows? Answers in Genesis takes a lot for granted, and a few of their arguments are patently unconvincing. Young earth and 6 literal days I find downright absurd. I was not making a case for evolution with fossils and hominids. But those hominids and fossils are there, and I've not heard any Palentologist say they're the remains of extinct groups. How do those who say so substantiate their claim?Give me a link to their articles. I would like to read it, for balance. But since they're interpreting anthopological data, their arguments must be sound. Of course there are frauds. There are frauds everywhere, in every field of science. But it doesn't negate what is genuine, and they far outweigh the fakes, or diminish the disinterested efforts of scientists. Evolution profers some powerful arguments, and they need forceful arguments in return. Remember evolution has not won over the scientific community. There are scientists who examine the same data, interprete it differently and argue against evolution. But it is gaining ground, and it is being taught in schools, and the I hear the Vatican has endorsed it. Answers in Genesis offers unsubstianted claims. In the face of what evolutionists are countering with, don't you think they should offer more? I much prefer your links to other sites and articles, that give forceful, interesting arguments against evolution. I am, in fact, reading one of them now. |
@Vesc If it's fixed wings I would still recommend a US flight school, but if the SA is up to par, fine. What am I exactly? You mean what do I do? Spiked, do drop your movie list. You sef. Gamine, Del Toro looks okay, don't mind her. ![]() Finally managed to see Slumdog Millionaire yesterday.I was prepared to hate this movie. But- Wow.Great music. Great directing. |

OLAADEGBU:Answers in Genesis furnish unsupported claims. Science isn't evil, and many of them have benefitted by the advances of science and technology, one obvious benefit being the website they post articles on. Science tries to solve puzzles, and that's to their credit. The fact remains that no one knows what happened at the beginning. And the Bible itself has a historical context. The Bible is a collection of ancient scrolls, and a few were not included. Though when you read the unincluded, written by Gnostics, their author's intended mischief becomes clear. The earth was created in six literal days? And it's thousands of years old? It's statements like that that dilute the power of the Gospel to thinking people. How can they take anyone with that absurd stance seriously? Human beings have cracked the human genome. I don't think dating the earth, even if they're estimates, should be too hard.Paleontologists date fossils and artifacts. Though they change dates according to technology, the changes are in millions and not thousands of years. You cannot make the hominid skulls they discovered go away by waving a bible, not can the fossils of Metozoid animals vanish. If not for carbon dating, scientists wouldn't have been able to deternime the age of books like The Book of Judas, which seriously undermine the gospel, and reveal that it was written long after the death of Judas, the purported author, and so he didn't write it. In fact, the Vatican hid it for centuries out of fear, and it was only recently that they could be certain it was false, though it had long been discredited. Whether the earth is millions or thousands of years old is irrelevant, though. What concerns me is people who hide behind science to deny the existence of God. Evolutionary psychology and evolutionary biology furnish them their reasons. It's mostly conjecture, but those reasons can be compelling. I don't think science is incompatible with God. It's only agenda is to know and discover more. Some of their theories are falsified later by scientists, but they consider that progress. They're merely wandering in the endless darkness of the unknown, and trying to claim the darkness inch by painful inch. In the end, it will lead to God. In fact, science has convinced many a scientist about the existence of God. Science is not the source of faith, but it can not be disregarded. |
@omololu Yes I can. I did in the post previous to the one you quoted. And no, Christians aren't mandated to pay tithe. It's a Jewish custom wherein you bring a tenth of your farm produce to the synagogue. It was never money, and it applied only to Jews.Go to the tithing thread for more about that. You're supposed to give to the poor and needy, and to give to your local church what comes from your heart to give. 100% of your income belongs to God anyway, if you're a Christian. You spend it how he directs, not on some self-involved yuppie lifestyle. The danger with tithing is once Christians do that, they think they've fulfilled their 'duty' and mostly ignore those in need. God will bless you tithe or no tithe, because He only wants what you want to give. @tpia ![]() @coolruler Well said. segyemaro:A real beaut, this one. |
You like Brad Pitt too? You're just as bad as iice, with that wandering eye of yours. Saw E.T Extraterrestial over the weekened. I sniffled at the end, when they were saying goodbye. The Creature's so cute. Spiked, where's your list of all-time Top Twenty fav movies? |
What did he win fer then?Sorry about Meryl. Vesc, I was going to ask about your friend but you beat me to it. I hope he follows his dream. If you want something badly, absolutely nothing can stop you, you know. Still haven't gotten around to watching all the good stuff. Managed to see A Few Good Men again. So good. |
Oh that's quite all right. I've been more than a little busy myself. I'll take a look. Many thanks |
It's not about 'men' and 'women'. Gender is utterly irrelevant in spiritual things. |
God does not assign leadership or spiritual roles according to sex or gender. We do. In antiquity physical strength was the sole determinant of worth, and males were stronger. They hunted for food and went to war, while all women did was give birth and suckle children and cook. You know how the wedding ring came to be? In foraging times a male would seize the woman he wanted, and tie her up. As time passed, the more compliant she was, the lesser the bonds until the only thing left to signify ownership and trust was a single piece of rope around a finger. So gender roles emerged, and of course, men ruled and would take umbrage at the weaker or inferior creature leading them.Antediluvian attitudes that persist in some cultures to this day. But you'll find that in ancient societies where women went to war, there was little gender discrimination. Paul was writing a letter to a church in his day. The fact remains that the Bible is a relatively recent development, and he was not writing to us. He had no idea you would be reading his letters thousands of years later. He deals with the problems each church was facing, from temple harlots to feasting in church to noisy wives and getting drunk on communion wine. His attitude was partly informed by the cultural attitudes towards women prevalent in his day, the Middle East, two thousand years ago. You think they're conservative now? Imagine that society thousands of years ago. I was reading in a concordance Bible that the women in those churches were nosiy and were distrupting church services. Perhaps they were giddy from the freedom of not being in a synagogue. Their frivolity apparently infuriated Paul. Christ was a a cause greater than his life. His solution was to command them silent, citing Jewish law commanding obedience in synagogues. They should ask their husbands when they got home. That verse applies to you only if you're a woman in the Corinthian church two thousand years ago. We're so silly. Human beings. We're all the material he has to work with, and look at the material! Still he cut through our stupidity and ignorance sometimes and used women. Like Deborah, Israel's leader and spiritual head after Joshua and Ehud. And that was in Old Testament times. How much more are men and women equal in Christ. |
The spoof is the likelier story. Slumdog and 8 Oscars.Hm.Happy for Kate. She's enormously talented, and the awards have been a long time coming. A second Oscar for Penn. Go baby! Cruz? Seriously? Must watch that movie. |
@toneyb I'm reluctant to post this thread, as the authors, like most self-experimenters,researchers and scientists studying NDEs, discover it to be real and are drawn into the occult.Occultism appeals to the intellectual elite and academics for some reason, and quite a of them are actively engaged in,like Raymond Moody, Kenneth King and the late Elizabeth Kubler Ross. This is a paper on the results of research attempting to link science and 'otherworldly' phenomena. http://www.fmbr.org/papers/about_spirits.php |
Tropic Thunder! ![]() Discover it poste haste. Robert Downie Jr's performance is fantastic. Cruise, as Les Grossman,is utterly delicious. He and that butt-lickin assistant of his are beyond funny.Skimmed thru the first 30 minutes the first time.I'm glad I paid attention this time. Funny funny funny! |
Matter is the manifestation of energy perceived through our 5 senses.Without conscious beings perceiving energy cannot manifest matter. So,there is no matter as such. That's quite a definition you've got there. I don't pretend to understand it. Without conscious beings perceiving energy, matter cannot manifest itself? If every human being on earth were to die somehow, the physical universe would vanish, because it's our conscious regard that keeps it in existence, that manifests it? The moment we take our eyes off it, and there's no consciousness to preen for, the moon takes a hike? The Double String theory and experiments demonstrate that electrons, light and other quantum thingies show particle-wave duality. It says nothing about matter not existing, or it being a function of human or any other consciousness. It does say that the patterns of photons of light are unpredictable, and that nothing is known about photon activity betweeen its emission source, and its receptor: photons from sunlight and our retina. If this could somehow be discovered, interference would change what the receptor, our retina, perceives. How does this say matter does not exist, how does it originate a spiritual philosophy,or show that science has been investigating things spiritual? If a scientist sets out to demonstrate the dual nature of quantum particles, is he also testing and verifying spiritual things as well, even though the thought did not once enter his mind? How's that? Because you say so? |
Bedazzled was a book? ![]() Last time I'll skip through a movie. Sat down and really watched Tropic Thunder. Hilarious! 'Les Grossman' is just priceless. ![]() I take it back. Cruise deserved that Golden Globe nomination o! |
m_nwankwo:He's already answered your question,M. |
Oh hey. I'm well aware drugs can cause hallucinations. Drug use causes the serotonin in the brain to go haywire, producing hallucinations. The most famous culprits are LSD.The native Indians use mushrooms in their shamanic rites to enter an altered state of consciousness, and see 'visions.'These are all results of chemical processes in the brain. So yes, drugs can cause OBEs (Not NDEs,as there is no near-death involved.) However, there is a sequence to Near Death Experience that drug-induced OBEs cannot replicate, and the oxygen-starved brain theory has long been entertained and discarded in the main. Yes, the heart stops pumping when it stops, and oxygen is not pumped to the brain during the period, which is very brief, before their heart starts again. Studies published in Science Digest showed that the patients who experienced NDEs had enough oxygen in their brains for normal brain function. In an ICU, children who had NDEs had the same level of oxygen in their brains as children who did not. So their brains were not oxygen-starved, but was functioning normally. They were not hallucinating. The real NDEs studies don't inject people with drugs and then annouce what is already known. NDE scientists conduct their research in the intensive care units of hospitals, monitoring patients with terminal illnesses and the critically ill who actually experience these things. Some of them conduct two to three year research at nursing homes. Most of the terminally ill see things others in the room cannot see, and they are perfectly conscious. One lady reported seeing a shadow circling around her bed. But she died before any sense could be made of what she was describing. The heart stopping is not the only conditition for an NDE to occur. A lot of NDEs occur while the heart is beating as well, while the patient is in a coma,or injured in an accident, just plain ill and near death. No,er,drugs, and brain function is normal. |
Oh hey Vesc. Well, is he interested in fixed or rotating wings? He wants to be a helicopter pilot? Is it recreational or career? His dream is to be what kind kind of pilot exactly? If he wants to be an airline pilot, he's going to need an ATPL. He should shop around for pilot scholarships, or contact the airlines he's interested in and see what they have to offer,training-wise. Well, the US is where the best pilot training is to be had. But SA offers a less expensive deal,as well as the added excitement, if he wants it, of bush piloting. But most US training schools offer a great virtual training environment before you embark on actual flight.I don't know if SA schools offer that. US schools also line up airline job interviews for you, which SA schools do not. A PPL isn't qualification enough to work for other poeple most of the time, though I can't say it's not possible, It's a Private Pilot License. A CPL,Commercial Pilot License, gets you employment with regional airlines. He wants to know if he may work on a PPL to finance the rest of his pilot education? I don't know. It's possible. It depends on how skilled a pilot he turns out to be, and how may hours he manages to ratch into his logbook. |
Mr Nwankwo,I did not say m_nwankwo:What does it imply then? And why cant the present human population be traced to more than one woman in antiquity,if she was merely one member of a population cluster? If there were several women, surely the present human population ought to be traced back to several mDNAs? Why only one? I'm not saying science is looking to prove or disprove Genesis. Science does what science does; look for answers. I was looking at that particular find from a creationist perspective. |
I'm going to look for its soundtracks. Good music. Still searching for that great soundtrack in Chumscrubbers. False dichotomy is right. But I'm not sure you can argue ,reason, rationalize or explain another person into discovering God. It seems the brain is designed to function solely in this world, and to understand things of this world only. It's ill-equipped for spiritual things and rarely comprehends it. There are scientists who believed God without being preached at. Scientists who found God in their laboratories, in the sum of discoveries in their field,in the course of research. God has different ways of drawing us to himself. There are different kinds of knowledge and different organs for apprehending it. I don't think one believes with one's brain. You have a spirit that's at home with spiritual things and within whom faith resides. And this spirit discerns spiritual things. How do you share what you know with atheists, whose only repository of knowledge are their senses and their brains? You can't. Neither the fact of God nor things of the spirit can be logicked into empirical existence. Do you realize, if you, an occultist and an atheist were to sit down to breakfast, and God were suddenly to sit in your midst and make His presence known, you would perceive his presence, the occultist might, but the atheist would eat on, utterly oblivious, perceiving nothing at all? The overwhelming reality of the physical senses, the superiority and spiritual alienation that comes from 'brain' knowledge alone is atheism's great tragedy. |
I loved it then and I love it now. ![]() Remember where he was this 'wangially-challenged' ultra dumb basketball star? "I'm gonna give it a hundred and ten per cent!!' And where he was singing to that girl he loved on the beach?"Dolphins dolphins I adore, " He really was terribly funny. |
OLAADEGBU:That's precisely the point. Genesis said God made man, and there was a single female, Eve, from whom we all descended.Thousands of years later, science says we are ALL descended from a single female living in Africa sometime ago. What are the chances of that? Dates and paleontolical language apart, this is as close to confirming creation and the existence of Eve as science has gotten so far. I thought it very intriguing. |
