CareerRe: Ecobank Commences Mass Sack Of Oceanic Bank Staff by madprof(m): 9:56am On Feb 18, 2012
With the acquisition of Oceanic bank by Ecobank, closure of unneeded branches becomes obvious and inevitable. This is simple logic: the total workforce will be too much for the remaining branches, so what do you do with the excess workforce? Keep paying them because you don't want to offend people?
FYI, those who were disengaged were given severance packages and, with the way things are, is that not probabbly a good opportunity to start something more profitable of your own? Sometimes, life needs to give us a hard slap for us to have the courage to do something better for ourselves. Most of the guys I know who were disengaged in the past are doing better than when they were still in banks. Some are even still in the banking sector, receiving better pay.
Mind you, job cuts happen in other sectors; do you blame Sanusi for those too?
FashionRe: Nigerian Tailors And Their Wahala! by madprof(m): 8:46am On Feb 18, 2012
The last time I took business to any tailor was 1992, when I gave a tailor material to sew my graduation suit. In short, the the guy kept on giving excuses until one day he simply disappeared into thin air. Since that day I have never, ever given and will never, ever give any tailor material to sew. I always buy readymade clothes and they're good enough for me - I'm not much of a clothes person anyway.
What happens now is that my wife goes to the market, buys material, takes it to a tailor who already has my measurements. All I know is that she eventually brings back a sewn dress for me to wear. I don't know who sewed it and I don't care. The only time I visit a tailor is if my wife is choosing a new tailor who will take my measurements. She chooses the style, material, e.t.c. Frankly, I don't know why she even bothers. I have zero regard for tailors. They are a bunch of disappointing liars. I vowed since 1992 never to subject myself to any tailor's waiting game. I have no patience for people whose word you can never hold on to.

BusinessRe: Banking Reform: More Workers To Lose Jobs by madprof(m): 11:41pm On Feb 17, 2012
spicyhoney:
It is Sanusi's fault because most of his 'reforms' are unnecessary and bad for the Nigerian economy especially at this present time. Personally, am yet to see any good only havoc from his 'reforms'.

They have only succeeded in instilling insecurity and fear in the heart of most bankers and also made them prone to commiting fraud since their jobs are no longer secured, any one could be laid off at any time.
I am not particularly a Sanusi fan, but please explain how his reforms are "bad". That people should be encouraged to embrace cashless and electronic means of doing transactions? That banks should have the consciousness to watch their expenses (which will produce a healthier banking sector)? Or creating a system that rescues an ailing bank through nationalization thereby securing depositors' funds?
I'm sure you know that people will always comit fraud whether their job is secured or not, it is human nature to be dishonest, cheat or steal.
It might interest you to know that banks spend quite a fortune managing liquid cash, most of which should not be in circulation to begin with. Do you recommend that banks continue spending more than they can afford?
BusinessRe: Banking Reform: More Workers To Lose Jobs by madprof(m): 6:49pm On Feb 17, 2012
we we:
Round and round we go, a failed economy will always result into job cut and other structural adjustment. A country where businesses depend solely on generator to function, do you know how much banks spend on fueling and maintenance those generation plant monthly? Businesses in developed nations are cutting jobs even with all social amenities in place. What do you expect in Nigeria case?  It is so unfortunate huh
True. Banks have over the last couple of years realized that they spend more than is justifiable on overhead costs. Depending on the size of the branch, it costs at least N150,000/month to buy diesel to run a generator in a branch (you will still pay NEPA bill of maybe the same amount). By the time you add staff salaries, premises maintenance, cash insurance and other costs you will arrive at a monthly expense sheet that runs into millions. Mind you, the branch may not even be making profit and if it is not, how is it supposed to pay for these expenses? This is common sense: if you had your own small business and you discovered that you were spending more than you were making what would be the most logical thing to do?
Job cuts are just one aspect of expense control that banks use. If a bank realizes that staff costs are too high there are two main options: slash jobs or slash salaries. Which is better, slashing salaries so that everyone can stay (under)employed but with poor pay, or slashing jobs so that fewer people will be employed but paid competitively?
I believe that Nigerian banks are being made to tread the path of financial prudence at least. That is the main thrust of Sanusi's reforms. For one thing, in today's banking sector customers no longer lose their deposits due to collapse of a bank.

the problem is that the public supports them.
They can run into any nearby house after the attack.
This why boko haram wont work any where else!
No nearby place to hide after the attack.
As the case with bank robbery.
Did they take refuge in your house after the attacks? Oh wait, , you don't live in Kano, so shut up and let the real residents tell you how many terrorists they have harbored.
P.S. Don't make the mistake of thinking Boko Haram cannot attack your location, wherever that is. Remember they are suicide bombers not fighters. They are not looking for a gunfight. Blowing themselves up in the midst of victims is enough success for them.
PoliticsRe: Breaking News: Kano Under Attack Again! by madprof(m): 11:01pm On Feb 06, 2012
It's time our security apparatus changed their MO of tackling Boko Haram from that of check points to doing some real investigative work. Go undercover, get these guys and interrogate them extensively for information to dismantle their leadership. The SSS, police and army should know that doing the same thing always will not give you a different result.
PoliticsRe: Why Do We Nigerian Keep On Voting Pdp, Then Complian About Them Later: ? by madprof(m): 10:45pm On Feb 06, 2012
A lot of the responses to this topic are something to the order of the following:

- PDP has the widest spread, while the rest are ethnic parties
- the other alternatives are no better than PDP
- PDP is no good; they have (mis)ruled us for 12+ years
- what other choice do voters have; the other options are ex-PDP members anyway.

None of these however addresses the simple question: why vote for PDP everytime when you know they are not honourable? Because the truth is that, no matter how much PDP (or any other party) rigs, you still find Nigerians in their multitudes voting for them, voting for candidates they do not have a lot of faith in. If all the candidates on display are less than worthy of your vote, the first thing to do is reject them! If we keep taking a co-ordinated stand of rejecting the recycled thieves that present themselves to us for office, they will begin to get the message. Unfortunately what most of us do is vote for what we perceive as "best of the worst"; "better him than nothing". Nobody can rig an election where a handful of voters turned up nationwide. It is however near impossible to achieve that kind of boycott for the simple reason that we the electorate are selfish. We typically would rather vote an unworthy candidate with whom we share the same ethnicity than not vote at all, even when none of the candidates meet acceptable standards for leadership. We keep voting for mediocres and somehow expect them to excel, how does that happen?
Why do we keep voting for the cabal of parasites that parade themselves before us every four years? Are we afraid of them?

TV/MoviesRe: Nigerians Are Cowards (Half Of A Yellow Sun Casting) by madprof(m): 12:21am On Jan 31, 2012
Hmmm.
Well here's the thing: movie production (and casting) has never been about ethnicity or sentiments (not even in Nollywood, where quantity is a lot more importatnt than quality); it's about business. Hollywood didn't become what it is today by sympathizing with mediocrity. In fact, Hollywood today is made up of stakeholders - actors, directors, e.t.c. - many of whom are not American by ancestry. That would not have been if producers insist on casting Americans for "American parts". The guys who adapted this story into a movie thought about it and decided on the choice of Thandie Newton for that part. It's that simple. We should be more concerned with developing Nollywood to become world-class, rather than waiting for hand outs from Hollywood.

So Uncle Joe owe me some small change for saving his wife's reputation.

That proverb that when you throw a stone in the market place you don't know whose head the stone would drop on, it could be your family is so true, so all you guys insulting the first lady, those insults na own goal oh? you are basically insulting yourselves undecided
My guy, it is better that we be the ones throwing the stones at the 1st lady than outsiders, don't you think? If we close our eyes & ears to her litany of embarrassing deficiencies (bad grammar, lack of charisma, lack of poise, lack of grace - you name it) I'm sure it will be a lot more embarrassing if outsiders be the ones to point out these faults. And condemning the 1st lady's embarrassing and several deficiencies does not equal insulting oneself. If she had any sense she would take the criticisms in stride and work on herself. I didn't ask to be 1st lady, she did, and as a public figure she has the sacred responsibilty to conduct herself with proper decorum at all times.
Maybe it's time we started demanding at least a good image from our leaders. It does count, in the ultimateness of things.

realistic1:
If you check at the statistic of the deaths of Nigerians you might notice that most of your listen guidelines abouve aren't the major killer of Nigerians,
compared to the UK
                                NGR         UK

Murders- WHO          1.8          6.6
Boko haram               8            6
Poor health               9            1
corruption                 10          4
respect for the rich   100        0
Until Nigerians put a stop to respects of those that have more than them, or you don´t respect persons because they have more money than you, but equal respect to all. Abolish the word SIR to all.
What has the word SIR got to do with killing people? That word is one of formal address to a man; a mark of respect, not sucking up. All cultures worldwide (including the UK that you have mentioned) have similar words that denote respectful address.
Showing respect does not make you less than the other person, does not make you poorer and it certainly will not kill you. I fail to see your point.
