1. I guess the moguls that were given bailouts during the global financial crisis were poor. What about the oil production subsidies? Are they also for the poor? America is a capitalist system with strong welfarist state.
2. Personal economics shouldn't be a problem for macroeconomics. If I buy something I can't afford, there's no reason it should affect the macroeconomic stability of my country except in a case where there's corruption underneath the transaction. But I also don't believe most Nigerians buy things they can't afford. I think it's just gaslighting from you.
3. Subsidy (on petrol) cannot continue forever but it can't be removed in isolation like now. It's become a fundamental for our economy. It's just like saying we want to stop oil exploration because of the damage to the environment. What do you think will become of the country?
I already explained it's a question of policy. If Tinubu is not happy with it, he can change it. I don't think the minister deliberately chose that approach since it's same across board.
What is obvious is that the approach failed under Lai
Petrol prices in the US went up to $7.00 in 2022 Summer
Now its at $3.00 Market forces. No subsidy. What they have is called SPR. its reserve in case the price gets too high, in international market.
Subsidy has to go at some point, and it will cause pain when its removed, regardless of the time.
You are gaslighting yourself when you refuse to believe some Nigerians sacrifice wants for needs. I cant help you with that.
Their information dissemination is not working well in this regime.

Whether he stays or not is not an issue for anyone who is not his employer.
My point is that Lai's methods were largely discredited even before he left office. His townhall fizzled out. This administration made it a policy to shift away from that tactics. It's not just the minister, even the SA has not been boisterous like Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu were.
What I'm pointing you to is that it isn't just about the minister. It's a posture for this administration to in all facets stay away from adopting the former administration's approach.
I think this silent laisse a faire will cost them.
A lot of Nigerians do not understand the strategies of the current government.
Someone has to explain to them. The opposition is doing a better job spreading disinformation.
They can talk through non affiliated proxies....but staying quiet will cost them a lot .

America subsidises both the rich and poor. The agric subsidies are for both rich and poor farmers. The food stamps are for the poor but interventions in clean energy, EVs and smart homes are for the rich.
I don't think there's any Nigerian earning 26000 naira who uses a phone of almost 1m naira. Your exaggeration is totally ridiculous even to a dummy. You see why Lai's methods never worked now? When you gaslight, you make people more repulsive to your message.
If you pinpoint the leaders' luxurious lifestyle as the problem, why then do you say subsidies being removed are a good thing. Has any society prospered where the poor carry the rich?
1-America is a capiatalist system, the rich are not subsidized, they pay more back to the government. Clean energy, EV, Smart homes are much more expensive.
2-There are people in Nigeria with misplaced priorities, buying things they cannot really afford. Owning multiple cars, do not get me started.
3-Subsidy cannot continue forever, and everybody is feeling the effect of subsidy removal, both rich and poor.

Lai atleast opened his mouth, if you advocate staying quiet, Is tinubu going to be the one making the policies and also sending the information out ? Why does he need an information minister ?

If Lai Mohammed did a good job, the Buhari administration won't have the high level of negative perception it has presently even from members of APC.
I listened to the present minister and the SA on media when they took office and they emphasised a shift away from propaganda and gaslighting in relating with the public. If Lai did a good job, his method won't be roundly condemned by his successors.
Saying the so-called good policies will take 2 years before having benefits is an admission that the govt is not sure of the outcome of the policies. Don't forget that the govt itself through its officials claimed naira will stabilise and find its "true value" latest last quarter of last year.
Same govt claimed PH refinery will be working by December.
Same govt claimed CNG buses will be available by December. These are just examples of missed deadlines I'm giving you.
So if a govt that's had so many missed deadlines comes out to announce another one as you're doing now, it's going to have less trust in the bank with the citizens who will see it as a lying govt.
Mark this post. If the current Minister doesnt go out defending the administration, he will not last. That job he has, whether he likes it or not he will say things that will eventually not happen. The only other option is not saying anything at all. Which he is doing right now. If Tinubu says he will fix it by December and it doesnt happen, of cause the minister will look like a liar. But thats the job he signed up for !!! He could be diplomatic and not too specific, but choosing to say he will not talk like Lai Mohammed is not a strategy at all.

You cant go to war expecting not to be shot. You now decide sit at home because your predecessor was shot. How will you win the war ??

What about other govts that subsidise so many aspects of their economy for years?
Does your analogy of mother and child apply to them or it's only a peculiar thing for Nigeria.
Even Nigeria did not just start subsidy post covid. Subsidy has been existing for years
America subsidizes welfare to low income people.

But guess what America sells products to the poorest people in the world. There is a Nigerian making less than $20 a month. That has an iphone worth $500.
America sells American cars, tinubu's wife rides around in an escalade, its manufactured in America.
Nigeria makes nothing to sell to get money, even the oil we have is not as expensive as it use to be, oil theft and insecurity has made our production even lower with the poor prices.

If we start to produce and export and our politicians are not looting the funds, we can afford subsidy. But as long as our leaders continue to buy homes in North London and france we will never be able to afford any subsidy.

I have never been a fan of "sending people to the farm." Nobody will listen to you. Agriculture right now is very unattractive to many graduates. Folks who studied agric courses spent 5 years in school; they're not going to go through that stress only to end up with miserable and insecure jobs with peasant pay.

To make agric attractive, we need to move away from peasant farming to modern day practices. Lets get local and international investors to invest in that sector. If Tony Elumelu or the Adelekes, Otedolas and Dangotes decide to invest in that sector, graduates will apply in their numbers.

We can't abandon that sector to the "Kamorus" looking for 35k earners and hope that people who spent 5 years studying Agricultural economics and extension in FUTA will send their CVS. They won't. I'll rather burn my certificates than pick up a h.oe and cutlass too. We must evolve and make that sector attractive.

We don't have to send 100,000 graduates to the farm. This sort of schemes have consistently failed over the years. Till tomorrow, it will continue to fail.

We only need two or three serious investors to look into the sector. We didn't have to send graduates to the Niger Delta to explore oil. All we needed to do was attract the likes of Shell. So why are we trying to send broke people to the farm with some miserable loans and empowerment? To do what?
I have always been an advocate for the governement to saddle all the people with oil wells and monopoly businesses to also venture into large scale farming. You cannot just take oil well license and the people from your state cannot afford corn or yam in the market and you have 3 houses in France. When you can finance a farm that will profit enough to pay for itself and hire 1000 Nigerians to work there.

Buhari was subsidizing petrol and dollars.
Thats like a child on his mothers back.

But when the child is 3 years old he has to walk by himself.
The mother cannot carry the child on her back forever.
Petrol and dollar subsidy is the child.

how will all this change the reality on ground?

how will it reduce inflation and improve the standard of living?
Good question. If the government should create more jobs and also raise interest rates. The prices of goods will eventually come down. If the maize farmer doesn't see buyers he will be forced to lower the cost.

If government increases salary today, the farmers too will increase the price of goods, its a never eneding circle and will make the inflation worse.

Automatically global circulation of money is stagnated, Government was carrying Nigerians on their back like a small baby. So Nigerians did not realize that the journey is far. Now Nigerians need to come down from the back of the governement and walk with their 2 legs. Its going to be awhile before we get used to it. Rough times ahead. Oga when has the price of foodstuffs ever come down ? Stop living on false hope.
Locally produced foodstuff has to come down. The farmer will have to sell at some point.
Look at cement for example, it went high and now its 7-8 thousand.
As long as the foodstuff is not smuggled across the border, the earning power of Nigerians will determine the price.
It happened in the US and UK. During covid everything went up due to inflation, now its back to the usual price when the rates were raised.

insecurity has affected foodstuff. For the locally produced goods cost of diesel has gone up and some of the raw materials are imported too. There has to be an all out war on bandits and oil theft.

I agree with you, the governors should liaise with the local governments and the community heads, these bandits are not ghosts, the people living with them know who they are. Oil theft is just so 1900's, why do we have senators and house of reps from oil producing states, they should be able to bring forward solutions to oil Theft.

If government incentivizes the graduates, they will go to the farm. If Billionaires start emerging from the farming sector.
A lot of people will go to the farms. China buys land in Africa just to come and farm and export it back to China, because its more affordable that way.
But we the Africans dont want to farm, everybody wants a job they can sit behind a desk and wear a tie.

Lol

We have over 150 institutions already, offering agricultural courses.

The question is what do you have for them upon graduation? Most of these people will end up selling Ankara and bags on WhatsApp. Some end up in the bank.

You are absolutely right !! There needs to be national orientation that farming is not a bad profession.
Government should lease 1000 Acres from states that have land and hire these people as government farm workers to manage and run the place, and slowly sell it to private firms. Or get them to bid and facilitate from the beginning. These ventures will pay for themselves and even make profit. Start mega poultries, give tax waivers and import waivers to these start ups and when they start making profit after a couple of years you start taxing them.

The imported fuel cost determines cost of transportation, cost of fueling generators.....so how would goods locally produced in Nigeria, come down in prices?
Very good question.
This is where science and technology comes in. The world has moved in that regards. We now have hybrid corn seeds that can produce double the amount of corn on one maize plant.
So if you were getting 50 bags from 1 hectare of land, you can get 100 bags with such hybrid seeds. There is a lot of other technological advancements that is done all over the world that has to be introduced to Nigerian farming. If you cultivate a huge land mass and increase production, it will ameliorate the cost of energy. All the farms in the world buy energy at the same prices. We have cheaper farm lands, and labor than most of them, so we should still produce cheaper crops to even export to them.

I have said it time and again. This current government does not have a good Minister of Information.

This current administration is well dressed but its standing in a dark room. (A lot of people cant see the nice clothes if the Minister doesn't turn on the light)

Minister of Information needs to highlight the journey and sell Hope to Nigerians.

Lai Mohammed defended Buhari's regime to the last at the expense of his reputation and clashed with Nigerians many times.

The current minister takes a Hands off approach. He needs to wake up and start engaging Nigerians, He needs to bring information before questions are asked, He needs to engage Nigerians so much they are tired of asking questions, He needs to get bloggers and media to tweet and post the good things done, those in the pipeline and those anticipated in the future.

Nigerians will eventually call the Minister a liar, but that comes with the Job. You cannot please everybody.

He has one of the most difficult jobs that can make or destroy this administration. Tell your Minister to wake up, the world is now digital. Go to Nollywood, cast stories that will depict what has been happening in Nigeria and changes made for better results, let the citizens know why there will be pain before things improve.

Its better they flood the markets, Set up cooperative boards to serve as an intermediate buffer.

Get market intelligence on hoarders and price manipulators.

Look for vulnerable markets, the governors can assist with these, why does everything have to be done by presidency. Governor should sit down with stakeholders in their states and forward possible solutions. Each state should have a commodity board.

When the prices are creeping up, you release some from the cooperatives.

When the prices are down you keep the grains in storage.

Eventually when the production is enough the market will self regulate.

Giving free grains to everyone is not realistically possible. Let us be honest.

The government should stop making this kind of promises they cant fulfill.

The whole world is slowing. A lot of over leveraged businesses are folding up.

The US interests rate is at an all time high about 8%. The UK interests rate is also high, So is Australia, Japan etc

Very few business can borrow money and guarantee and interest greater than 8% to pay back.

So a lot of multinationals are cutting back, its time for Nigeria to look inwards, cheaper food, cheaper housing.

Government should look for people who are agriculturally minded in crops and animal husbandry, send them to brazil and China on scholarship(3-6 months), Let them learn how these people mass produce crops and animals.

All those billionaires with Oil wells and those Oligarchs with Monopolies should also run farms to assist their communities. They should contribute their quota, Nigeria cannot abandon farming to the poor rural people and share the lucrative businesses licenses amongst the elites.

We have over 100 accredited college courses of agriculture in Nigeria.
