Brandeis is a US top 50 school. They give an average of $30,000 all admitted student to defray their tuition of about $46,000. Besides the $16,000 you need to cover up for tuition, you will need an additional $15000 to survive in Boston. Please plan carefully when you do accept this offer. What course did you apply to? The Heller School should be your best choice otherwise you have to think if it is worth it?
Thank you. Yes, its the Heller School. Sustainable International Development. Though still waiting for other decisions, before I make a choice. Brandeis i heard is very strict with paying tuition, they don't condone delays.I Don't won't to put myself into unnecessary pressure mbok!

Choose your field wisely, IT, health and pharma are the big areas in the US. You need to be in stem field to get a better chance of even jobs. It's not just about school. The arts and social sciences are not hot. You may have to change fields. Even pure sciences like physics, chemistry have dour career prospects when compared to computer science, engineering, pharmaceuticals, nursing, medicine.
Choosing your field wisely will help a lot.

@bbdd. Its not just easy for someone that has say a degree in Mass Communication, just change automatically to a Computer science degree or any related science degree just like that. Is admission even guaranteed? How can someone who has never Don physics or Chemistry subjects just switch, don't you hink, even if admitted, the person will struggle?

And what's the tuition? Think more in terms of how much you have to pay out of pocket than the actual value of your award.
I will be paying about $15,000 out of pocket. That is not really a problem for me, the ish is the cost of living in MA. I actually applied to this school cuz they give application fee waiver for Nigerians and they also waived TOEFL, though I wrote it. I didn't think I would get in coz of their low acceptance rate.

Are you applying for this Fall? If yes, have you confirmed application deadlines?
Yes. Just looking for 2 more schools to apply to. Waiting for some decisions, have 2 rejects already and 1 admit from Auburn. But don't think i will be going for it. They offered me an accelerated Masters for 1term which is $15,000 then the main masters program is 12months, that's another $15,000 with no funding o.

Contact the grad coordinator tonite if you can and analyze your chances.I didnt choose Cal cuz of the weather. Its the program first. Like the lady said, its an expensive city but one always analyze ALL Options before making a final decision right? But you will need to use IERF to convert your grades.it should come out high, depending on the sch you finished from too!
ok thanks a lot.

These science students don start o. Lmfao... STEM graduates are hot cakes in the labour market while others sell yams. Unless this is a joke, I salute the rationale behind this thinking. You listen to some people and u just wonder how they think. When u wanna write Jamb's UTME sef, if it's not medicine and surgery, law, petrochemical engineero-molecularistic-surgicolocus or something more in that region, u're seen as doomed in life. Y'all have to erase that baby idea and see life from different angles. Think before u advise people. Advising for example a graduate of History and Strategic Studies to apply for a STEM course and switch is just... mtchew.
A person who only had business with essays, arguments, long readings for four years without any form of Mathematics, chemistry, physics, should pay $50+ (like 5 times depending on d number of schools), apply for transcripts to be sent to these schools (calculate the costs), ace GRE, compose a letter of motivation to rival those wizards in the field (especially from Asia! Those Indian weyreys), and have letters of recommendation from History lecturers telling the admissions committee how he's going to be a great computer science or engineering grad student without any prior knowledge of programming, calculus, etc.
It doesn't end there, this person is also expected to get a graduate teaching assistantship and lecture or grade students? Well, pigs fly... don't they? If ur course is not closely related to STEM, biko... don't waste your money and time!!! Even applicants with a solid STEM background are rejected on a regular! Imagine being the person to review an application. U check transcripts, u dey see Intro to history, French revolution 1 and 2, Gender issues in the 16th century, Capitalism of the 18th century European states, World war 1. U go give the person admission if e dey apply for elect elect? Don't answer.

That's on one side, secondly. There's more to life than getting a degree, applying for a job and getting it based on that degree and working till u retire at age whatever. University education only equips u with the starter pack to be whatever u wanna be. Get d education and use it for anything. Do u know how many STEM graduates are out there? If u dey enter Yankee, shine your eyes and no go do like omo mummy, expecting to get a degree and magically be attractive to recruiting companies because u have an engineering degree or any degree at all. JFK, know what's moving. Network, even if u study anything... one appointment from an old friend back in Naija and you could be made. Ask boys wetin dey move for Yankee and don't sleep on a bicycle (I'm not talking about selling drugs etc o, before one overzealous bookworm thinks I'm encouraging crap). Know what u want and go for it. In 5 years u won't see that anonymous online poster who told u to do this or that to blame if it ends badly. You're free, choose wisely and remember u'll be the one to face whatever happens to u.

Have a plan. Critically examine any advice u get, many people give subjective advice on here. Largely based on 'limited' experience. At a point u would think getting a nursing degree abroad would get u a banana island mansion in 5 years. People sha.

Can't believe I wrote this much lol. Make una dey relax small small eyin baba STEM. Na oti dey give people breakthrough abroad.

You wont believe how many times i read your post. To say i laughed is an understatement. My dear, people tend to navigate were they perceive success. Infact all the courses i wanted to do, i keep hearing the same thing," its not lucrative". Thanks a lot. Lets see how it goes.

Ok. I was actually advice to get a VISA with anything that has to do with development, even terrorism and peace studies, they usually grant visas cuz they are not courses people tend to go for. Don't know how true though. Thanks a lot Sir or Mam.

MsNas:
Ok thanks a lot for the heads up. Also looking at the Texas area. Dallas and Houston.

If you're coming to California cos of the weather, you might be disappointed. The weather is nothing like Nigeria. The winters can be brutally cold and the summers is extremely crazy hot..... and when I mean crazy, I am not exaggerating. If you're choosing schools based on weather then schools in southern America should be your go to. Also factor in the cost of housing and living too. Advise I always give to my friends and relatives coming her for school is "Go to school in the South or Midwest, look for jobs in the East coast or West Coast or whichever place you'd like to live after school is finished"

I personally will not advise any student who doesn't have full funding and solid means of financing their housing, feeding and the rest to come here. Minimum wage is $10, you can work only 20 hours a week... thats roughly $800 in a month. Depending on your school location (Long Beach, LA, San Diego, San Bernadino and the rest), that $800 will leave you struggling to pay rent and bills every month. And not to talk of the fact that most Cal States and University of California are very stingy with funding. They barely give GAs and some of them don't even offer it at all. Your best best is an RA and that will be most likely after you've spent a semester or two. School fees are also one of the most expensive in the country. UCals are way more expensive than Cal States and even at that, what they pay per semester at Cal States is enough to cover my tuition in Southern US. All the best sir/ma

Also malory84, if you have a high GPA. you can apply for international full tuition waiver (3.5 above), and also GA positions. They are quite generous cuz they know CA is quite expensive. And its based on department/college selections. So goodluck !
Ok. my GPA is 3.98/5.0 don't know what it will amount to when converted. Thanks a lot for the tips. I really want Cal cuz of the weather and all. Common cold weather for Naija na wahala for me not to talk of the US.

If you want to work with NGOs (most are health related), you should have a health background(like taken one or two courses). And you should apply for a program that falls under a STEM degree (at least to be marketable on the job market). I got admitted for Healthcare Mgt (a STEM degree), in Cal state LA(Really Affordable school but LA cost of living...LOL), and good job prospects for NGOs and UN-like organizations. So maybe you email the grad coordinator and ask if Mass com is acceptable in d list of undergrad programs. On the long run for me, I am also looking at NGOs but defnitely not just US. NGOs in Nigeria like FHI, 1 AIDS foundation (cnt rem the name) & another that partnered with Harvard are all in Nigeria and they pay REALLY WELL. Personally I rate NGOs over Banks and even oil firms but not Tech companies.
Thanks a lot . Good explanation. Please what's your undergraduate major? I am very sure they will ask for prerequisite courses. Do you know were i can take one or two courses? Are certificate courses valid?

Yes they are under Middlebury College. That was why i even gave it a thought. Don't just want anything that will raise eyebrows in the interview. So needed to find out from gurus in the house and also on the course.

Because people with good results in STEM subjects are sought in the job market! smiley
While people with "soft" subjects end up selling yams in the market. shocked
This is serious. So are you implying that people like me don't stand a chance of getting good jobs after graduating? I was thinking of pursuing a PHD, then get into lecturing. Heard they are paid well.

The course is not under STEM, secondly, related course that can make u work under UN is offered at Bridgeport . Global development and peace. I have been admitted and I have my I 20 now..

My plans is to enroll for first semester and transfer my unit to community college for courses under STEM..
Oh wow. I will check out the school. Are you going for the Global development and peace program? Also, how can someone with an social science background just transition into STEM, just like that! The VO's will think its just a strategy to get into the US system. I equally don't think the schools will offer me admission with no prior undergraduate STEM courses.

Hello. Thank you for creating this post. I want to go for my masters this fall. I have two toddlers who would go with me. My husband would remain in Nigeria as he has he's work to do. With that said, what evidence do I need to show that we are financially capable for my kids? In addition, my last child is a US citizen, in requesting for the F2, do I need to put he's name as part of my dependant? Especially since he doesn't need a visa.
