PoliticsEdwin Clark: No Igbo-Speaking Person From Delta, Rivers Should Contest by MANDIPUTIN(op): 9:14am On Apr 19, 2021
2023: Buhari's successsor should come from South East ― Edwin Clark

*Says no Igbo speaking person from Delta, Rivers should aspire
*Nigeria is in pains, agony, needs restoration of dignity of man, national healing ― Ohaneze President
*Says time to use South East against South East is Over
* Warns against use of violence, military to address Nigeria’s problems
*Calls for fairness, justice, equity and purposeful leadership

AHEAD of 2023 general elections, former Federal Commissioner for Information and South-South Leader, Chief Edwin Clark has said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor should come from the South East geo-political zone of the country.

Clark has however described as abominable and condemnable if any Igbo speaking person from Delta and Rivers States aspires for the exalted position because such a person speaks Igbo, adding that no person from Oshimili South and North, Aniocha, Agbor or Ukwani should come out for presidency, but they should all join the South East to achieve it come 2023.

Speaking Sunday at his Asokoro residence, Abuja when he received the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo and some South East leaders led by the President General, Professor George Obiazor, the Elderstateman who is the National Leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF said that the time has come for the South East region to produce the President of Nigeria and 2023 is the time.

The Ijaw leader who called for synergy, sacrifice among the people, said that the struggle may not be easy, but the region must reach out to other geo- Political Zones of the country in order to woo and engage them, just as he warned that the South East region must put its house in order, work in unison and as one indivisible zone.

Clark said, “the era we have reached now is that we have agreed to work together, how do we go on, how do we move on? I think that is the stage we have reached.

” I don’t belong to any political party, but I speak my mind. The man who brought politics into Nigeria was late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, I knew him when I was 20 years when he visited Warri, we trekked 12 miles to see him. Some of the problems we are having today in Delta was as a result of the support for Azikiwe and without that, we would not have gotten Midwest region that later became Bendel State and now Edo and Delta States. We are together, we are one.

“We are supporting the South East region. Anybody from Midwest, Oshimili South and North, Aniocha South and North, Ika, Agbor or Ukwani, if you say I am ready to be the President of Nigeria because I speak Igbo, that is punishable because when you do something that people don’t like, it abominable.

” I have said it, all the Igbos in Anioma, Rivers, in Delta, where ever they are, this is the time for Igbo, South East President. We have the same problem, when we went to the 2014 National Conference, we said that the South East has five states, they should be given additional states so that everyone will have same states like in other zones if that will stable Nigeria, create them.

“We want the President coming after Buhari to come from the South East, we are together.

” Let me advise, if you must fight a war or fight for anything at all, we must put our house in order. What do we do with other voices that are not in tandem with our voices? We must find a way to see what can be done, they have own point, but at the same time, they should also listen to us.”

Earlier in his remarks, the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Professor George Obiazor who noted that Nigeria as a country was in serious agony and pains, said that the time has come for the restoration of the dignity of Man National Healing.

The Ohaneze President General who warned against the use of violence and military tactics to address the problems confronting the country said that they are used, the more factionalised the country would be and the more factionlalised we are, it would then lead to a synchronised national crisis and if not checked, could lead to inevitable disintegration.

Obiazor who noted the time has come for the South East and South-South to form a stronger synergy, said that the time when South East people could be used against South East was over, adding that one of them cannot be hated and you show love to the other.

According to Obiazor, this is not the time for people to claim that they love the South-South more than the South East Zone, just as he stressed that people can be fooled for a while and not forever, adding that what they are facing today is light at the end of the tunnel.

Obiazor who called for synergy among the people of both zones and other parts of the country, said, “today, what we need is to synergise among ourselves, the day we will do it, history will change. We all know that we have the same kind of problems.

“Honestly, you cannot hate one of us and like the other side. For people who tell us that they will like people in the South-South more than the South East or they will use one against the other, the time is over. You can fool people for some time, but not forever. What we are facing today is light at the end of the tunnel. I don’t know who does not believe in one course.

“The national question is the issue that requires a different kind of solution and resolution. The more you apply violence and military tactics to it, the more the country is factionalised, the more the country is factionalised, the more ethnic militia groups and eventually leads to what is called synchronised national crisis and the rest is history and inevitable disintegration.

“We should start doing something to address the problem. I urge the Federal Government to reconsider the use of force, I want the government to conspicuously impress the values of justice, equity and fairness as its true sense so that Nigeria will face clear ease of unity. It is time for the government and the people to start the process of healing. Nigeria is in agony and pains, it is time for national healing.

The President General of Ohaneze was accompanied during the visit by his Majesty, the Obi of Obinugwu, Imo State, Dr Cletus Ikechukwu Ilomuanya; Ohaneze Secrerary General, Chief Okey Emuchay; Senator Ben Obi; Chief Onyema Ugochukwu; Prof. A.B.C. Nwosu; Chief Dubem Onyia; Chief Guy Ikoku; Hon. Goddy Nwazurike, among others.

Also present to join Chief Clark in receiving the Ohaneze leaders were former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Victor Attah; former Minister of Police Affairs, Alaowei Broderick Bozimo; Senator Bassey Henshaw; Ambassador Godknows Igali, among others.

PoliticsSenate Confirms Halilu Shaba As NASRDA DG by MANDIPUTIN(op): 2:11pm On Apr 14, 2021
The Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Dr. Halilu Shaba as the Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency.

The red chamber gave the approval following the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology at plenary in Abuja, chaired by Senator Uche Ekwunife.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had on Tuesday, March 2, 2021, asked the Senate to confirm Shaba as DG NASRDA.

In the letter, Buhari urged the lawmakers to give his request an accelerated consideration.

Shaba had been in acting capacity as DG of the agency following the expiration of the two-term tenure of Professor Seidu Mohammed in June 2020.

The Agency had earlier, on July 2, 2019, announced the appointment of Mr Jonathan Angulu as an acting Director-General to facilitate a seamless transition process between the outgone DG and an incoming one.

Jonathan handed over to Shaba two days earlier to continue in an acting capacity until the appointment of a substantive DG for the agency by the Federal Government.

Before his appointment as an acting Director-General of NASRDA, Shaba served in various leadership capacities since joining the agency in 2009.

He had served as the Director of Strategic Space Applications, in which capacity he led the department’s policy initiations and execution within the national space programmes framework.

Shaba previously served as a Deputy Director at the National Emergency Management Agency between 2006 and 2009, before joining NASRDA.

PoliticsI Spoke With A British Minister And He Told Me That Nigeria Must Remain Together by MANDIPUTIN(op): 8:34am On Apr 11, 2021
In the tweet which he made on Saturday morning, Femi Fani-Kayode said that last night he spoke with a serving British Minister who was with him at Cambridge some years ago, and the British Minister told him that Nigeria must remain together at all costs.

The reply he said he gave to the British Minister appears a bit funny. He said his response to him was that before he lectures him on the unity of Nigeria, he should let Northern Ireland reunite with Ireland, grant freedom to the Scots, apologize to India for the centuries of abuse and oppression, apologize to Africa for enslaving their continent and destroying them, apologize to China for the Opium Wars, do away with the British Commonwealth, and also stop trying to trigger the World War 3 with Russia. He said when he told him all this, the man dropped the call.

PoliticsHow They Destroy Nigeria Softly by MANDIPUTIN(op): 7:14am On Apr 10, 2021
In 2014, I and several other Nigerian University graduates had been shortlisted to write the Presidential Special Scholarship (PRESSID) designed exclusively for First Class Nigerian graduates who wanted to pursue both Masters and PhD in any top 25 Universities in the world.
President Goodluck Jonathan had set the scheme up and the idea was to build a strong team of brilliant Nigerians who will come back to serve the country years later.
There were a little above one thousand of us who wrote the exam at CHAMS, Abuja.
At the time, I was already lecturing in UNN, so most of my friends (who were also my colleagues) enrolled.
16 of us in total.
It was a computer-based test, so we knew our fate instantly.
I scored 94% in the exam.
In fact, 15 of us from UNN scored between 80 and 97%.
Man! We came out of the exam hall completely joyous.
We were so sure we had got the scholarship.
And we were right.
Sometime in February 2015, the list of 101 successful candidates was shortlisted in the National Dailies.
15 of us were on that list.
I had applied to Princeton University, Imperial College London and University of Toronto already.
That phase of our lives was glorious.
Fast forward to March, 2015.
Goodluck lost the elections to Mr. Buhari.
That was where things started to take a new turn.
Shortly after Mr Buhari was sworn in, he recalled the list and complained that there was no single northerner on it.
He believed it was an agenda of the South.
Right before our eyes, meritocracy was shortchanged for Federal character.
It was first like a joke, but we all lost that huge scholarship.
It was worth about $250,000 per person (tuition and living expenses inclusive across 5 years).
Before then, I had little faith in the country.
But when this happened, I became weary of the country.
Thankfully, later that year, I got a full scholarship from University of Toronto for my Masters and PhD (6 years in total).
Of those other 14 friends of mine, 13 of them have also moved since then - US, Canada, UK, New Zealand, Japan etc.
Obviously, we moved on, but truth is, the life we have now was afforded to us by the Government of another country, many of which will seduce you with permanent residency and citizenship afterwards.
Any nation that shortchanges merit for anything else will fall.
Nigeria has the brightest people, yet, we are where we are (in Osinbajo's voice).
These people will corroborate my story as they were also winners of the PRESSID scholarship:
Odoeze Jideofor, Okagu Ogadimma, Olikagu Sylvia, Chisom Hyacinth, Ali David, Chukwuma Izuogu, Samuel Olisa, Chima Eke and others.
Sad!

PoliticsNigeria Heading For The Brink, Lai Mohammed Warns, Urges Restraint by MANDIPUTIN(op):
Nigeria Heading for the Brink, Mohammed Warns, Urges Restraint

•Meets opinion leaders tomorrow

•Abdulsalami peace committee convenes today

With growing insecurity across the country, secessionist agitations and ethno-religious crisis, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has warned that Nigeria is heading for the brink, urging that there is an urgent need to pull it back.

“Despite huge human and material resources the country is heading for the brinks and there is an urgent need to pull it back from this catastrophe,” he said in a letter inviting leaders of opinion to a town hall meeting scheduled for tomorrow in Kaduna.

Also concerned by the raging strife across the land, the Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar (rtd)-led National Peace Committee (NPC) is also convening a meeting today in Abuja to discuss the way forward.

Nigeria has recently witnessed increasing insecurity, leading to the killing of security agents and innocent citizens by bandits.

The security crisis has made many Nigerians and members of the international community to express concerns about the state of the nation.

Mohammed, in a letter, inviting prominent Nigerians for a town hall meeting in Kaduna tomorrow said the manifestations of the general state of insecurity in the country, especially with secessionist narrative, crass politicisation of ethnic and religious differences need to be addressed urgently.

He said with the situation, the country is heading for the brink.

He said: “As you may observe, Nigeria has failed to manage its diversity. Despite huge human and material resources the country is heading for the brink and there is an urgent need to pull it back from this catastrophe.

“Increasingly, we are seeing this lack of capacity to manage our diversity manifesting in a general state of insecurity as witnessed in the heightened incidences of farmers/herders clashes, Boko Haram insurgency, banditry, ethno-religious clashes and intolerance, cultism, drug addiction and kidnapping.

“Closely tied to all these are the dangerous threat to the unity of the country and its continued existence as one indivisible nation. But the story of Nigeria has not always been this negative. How did we get here and what can we do to change the narrative to present our country in the best of light? This requires teamwork, reflecting all diversities, leveraging on all our collective creativity to pursue with diligence the project of rescuing Nigeria.’’

Mohammed added that the correct starting point towards addressing the problems is building an elite consensus on the security, unity, indissolubility and peaceful existence of Nigeria.

He said such elite consensus had worked in the past and there is a need to find out why it is not working again as well as to proffer solutions because Nigeria is truly at a tipping point.

In the invitation letters sent to many opinion moulders nationwide, the minister said a broad-based and inclusive town hall meeting has been fixed for Kaduna tomorrow to discuss some of the manifestations of the general state of insecurity in the country, especially with secessionist narrative, crass politicisation of ethnic and religious differences.

“The proposed town hall meeting will aim at developing concrete implementable resolutions because a lot of theoretical talks and postulation had taken place with little or no requisite outcome.

“The event will be declared open by President Muhammadu Buhari. Reputable scholar, Prof. Jibril Ibrahim, will be the lead presenter and will set the tone for discussion with Prof. Saka Nuru, Prof. Chudi Uwazurike and Prof Kokunre Eghafonaas as guest discussants,’’ the letter stated.

The meeting is expected to be attended by the leadership of the legislature, governors, ministers, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, service chiefs, Inspector-General of Police, heads of security agencies, religious and traditional leaders and members of the international community amongst others.

Similarly, the Abdulsalami-led peace committee has also scheduled a meeting of prominent leaders for today in Abuja to address what it described as the “escalating spate of insecurity, banditry, kidnapping, regional agitations, the killing of innocent citizens and other forms of violence.’’

It added that the vexed issues have continued to cause deep concern to well-meaning citizens at home and abroad.

NPC said it had been receiving requests from Nigerians, urging it to intervene.

PoliticsSouth-East Killings: We Are Hiding Our Faces In Shame, Says Umahi by MANDIPUTIN(op): 9:01am On Apr 06, 2021
EBONYI State Governor and Chairman, South-East Governors’ Forum, David Umahi, on Sunday, said governors of the region were currently hiding their faces in shame.

Umahi stated that the herdsmen they (South-East governors) fought hard to protect were the ones killing the people.

The governor made these remarks in Abakaliki, the state capital, when Vice President Yemi Osinbajo paid a condolence visit to the state on Sunday.

Umahi said, “Even when the killings happened; very unprovoked killings, some people said they gave the governor of Ebonyi State 21 days to resign. We have been called all kinds of names and we feel ashamed that the same people we fight for day and night as governors and leaders of South-East to ensure the oneness of this country would know about attacks on Ebonyi State and they were asked to leave and they left, and we were slaughtered and killed.

“What face do we have then to face our people? We feel so ashamed to face our people. When this thing happened, Your Excellency, there was going to be very violent retaliation. But I thank God for the leaders of this state. I thank God for CAN, the youths and traditional rulers.

“We immediately called for a stakeholders’ meeting and reached an agreement and said for the interest of this country, there would be no retaliation. But we are happy that you (Osinbajo) have a document that has been given to you.

“We are not saying it shouldn’t be investigated, but that document is information that came from the phone of the murderers and that’s what the community printed out and handed over to you. We demand a proper investigation.”

Umahi said three communities of Obeagu, Egedegede and Amaizu in the Ishielu Council area and the Effium community in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state, needed the sum of N5bn from the Federal Government to rebuild their homes and resettle.

Umahi added, “We demand that justice be given to the victims. This is the agreement and this is the promise I made to the people of Ebonyi State during our extra ordinary meeting on how to calm the situation.

“But it is also very annoying that herdsmen in other parts of the state are being asked to quit because they want to attack again. This is one attack that must not be attempted. This is because as the chief security officer, I’m to report to the Federal Government, I may not be able to control it.

“Let this madness stop. No one has the monopoly of violence, but we assure the Federal Government that there will be no retaliation, believing that justice will be done. This is because what was provided this afternoon by way of information is good enough to unravel what happened to us.

“We plead with the Federal Government to assist the people of Egedegede with the sum of N2bn so that they rebuild their homes and settle down.

“On the unfortunate killings in Effium community, we are equally pleading with the Federal Government to assist the people with the sum of N3bn, so that they can rebuild their homes.”

200 police, soldiers deployed in Ebonyi community

Meanwhile, the Federal Government said it had deployed 200 police and soldiers in the troubled Effium community in the Ohaukwu council area and the Egedegede, Obeagu and Nkaleha communities of Ishielu Local Government Area of the state to address the security crisis.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo stated this on Sunday in Abakaliki and assured the people that justice would be served in the case of persons, who were recently killed by assailants in the Ishielu council area of the state.

He said, “There are times when incident like this happens, when people are killed and you feel particularly outraged about what has happened. Over 200 police and army men have been deployed to those communities. We’ll do all we can to bring justice to the people.”

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide had described the provocative killings at Adani Uzo Uwani in Enugu State as the confirmation of earlier reports of USA embassy warnings of bandits ravaging the North are heading towards south to disrupt peaceful territories and to unleash violence and terror attacks especially in the Southeast.

In a statement, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro Secretary General Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide said: “The people of the Southeast now sleep with their eyes wide open as untold panic had enveloped the air,” we don’t know when Nigerian security officials will start carrying out Buhari’s Presidential orders to shot at sight anyone parading with Ak47. With the recent development yesterday in Uzo Umani in Enugu state, Ohanaeze Ndigbo urge Igbos to defend themselves against terrorism and violence from killer herdsmen, whether its ESN, Forest Guards or local hunters or community vigilante groups, we are ordering them to curb the menace using Igbo formula of Defence”

This is a clarion call for Ndigbo, to realize that they are coming in their thousands to destabilize Southeast and south/south, these are killer machineries sponsored by external detractors of igbos to ensure that there are disruption of farming activities and cause food insufficiency in the Southeast so that igbo will always depend on the North for food supplies, we cannot afford allow northern bandits to succeed in the Southeast.

Yahaya Bello under investigation for fraud: EFCC
The governor was said to have awarded contracts to non-legal persons, even so without due process.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has commenced an investigation into the fraud allegation leveled against Kogi State government and Governor Yahaya Bello.

In a letter signed by the EFCC’s Director of Operations, Abdulkarim Chukkol, and seen by Peoples Gazette, the anti-graft agency said it received a petition filed against Mr Bello and certain officials of his government.

A non-governmental organisation, Anti-Corruption Network, on March 1, filed the petition against the governor, on claims that it uncovered huge financial fraud carried out in the state.

In a copy of the petition shared on Twitter by former Kogi senator, Dino Melaye, the organisation detailed the allegations of financial mismanagement and corruption by Mr Bello, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor was said to have awarded contracts to non-legal persons, even so without due process.

According to Mr Melaye, the petition was also submitted to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), U.S. embassy, British High Commission and Transparency International.

A part of the petition read: “We have meticulously investigated and uncovered huge financial fraud carried out by Kogi State Government, the Governor of Kogi State and his Cohorts from 2016 – 2019, ranging from award of contracts to non-legal persons, award of contracts without due process, circumvention of procurement procedures, suspicious payments made without specific breakdown, money laundering, borrowing from non-capital market, fraudulent loan, and many others.”

The organisation further urged the new EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, to use his “good office and cause a further investigation on this matter and bring the perpetrators to book.”

The EFCC, in the letter dated March 26, summoned the group for an interview on March 31 at its headquarters in Abuja.

The spokesperson for the anti-graft agency, Wilson Uwujaren, however, did not respond to a call seeking his comment on the investigation.

Other calls for Mr Bello’s probe

On March 4, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) through its National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan asked the governor to “answer to revelations by the Anti-Corruption Network that he laundered over N3.7 billion in addition to billions of naira allegedly laundered through other individuals.

“Also, Governor Yahaya Bello should answer to allegations by the Anti-Corruption Network that he siphoned billions of naira through award of contracts, without due process, to Southbridge Integrated Services Limited to the tune of N624 million, in addition to five other companies which allegedly got between N22 million N129 million, respectively,” the PDP said in a statement.

“Against this background, our party calls on the EFCC, under its new leadership, to immediately commence investigation by inviting all those mentioned in the report as well as prosecute any individual or company indicted in the matter.”

Similarly, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) in a letter dated March 27, appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the governor over mismanagement of COVID-19 donations and support from the federal government.

The governor stirred controversy in the heat of the COVID-19 pandemic, joining issues with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Presidential Task Force (PTF) to declare that the “state is not testing at all and is an absolute high risk for Nigerians to go there because there is no testing facility and even if you fall sick, there is no isolation centre, and they don’t even acknowledge that the disease exists.”

SERAP, in a letter signed by its deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare urged Mr Buhari to “direct the Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, SAN and appropriate anti-corruption agencies to investigate alleged misuse of the N4.5 billion donations, loans and support the Kogi State government obtained from the federal government, including N90,720,000 reportedly spent on software to track COVID-19 cases in the state.”

The organisation stated that “if there is relevant and sufficient admissible evidence, anyone suspected to be involved should face prosecution, as appropriate.”

The group reminded Mr Buhari of the promise he made at his inaugural speech in 2015, where he said his administration “will ensure that the gross corruption at the local level is checked. For I will not have kept my own trust with the Nigerian people if I allow others abuse theirs under my watch.”

SERAP stated: “As you have correctly stated, the obligations of your government to combat corruption in Nigeria extend to all the three tiers of government, namely, the federal, state and local governments.”
