PoliticsFederal Government Has Condemned The Use Of "Naija" In Place Of Nigeria, by mandsignal(op): 10:04am On May 23, 2012
The Federal Government has condemned in strong terms the use of "Naija" in place of Nigeria,
saying that such usage is "very uncharitable and unpatriotic". Minister of Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili, made the remarks while
receiving the participants of Heir Apparent Reality Show in her office in Abuja yesterday. Akunyili, who frowned on the continuous misrepresentation of the country's official name in
place of a "corrupt" version, said: "It is very offensive to call Nigeria 'Naija'. We are making plans
to write companies to stop using the word Naija. I have heard that name Naija in adverts. I want
them to go back and remove that word. "If anybody says this is Naija, ask the person, 'Where is Naija?' We have to stop this word
because it is catching up with the young. If we don't put a stop to its usage now, it will continue
to project us wrongly." The minister's condemnation was prompted by a sentence in the presentation of the visiting
group where "our world is Naija" was inserted. Akunyili, who fervently spoke against the use of the word, ordered that the sentence be
removed from the programme and changed to "our world is Nigeria". "Naija" is obviously a Nigerianised form of Niger, from where Nigeria derived its name. The word is popularly used by musicians, artistes, advert managers and corporate companies
and it could be positive or negative, although it is being used more positively in recent times. It is believed to be trendier and is used by the younger generation. Though no official condemnation of the word has been made, several reports have warned of
the consequence of the usage of such words among the youths. Earlier, the minister commended the group for what she called patriotic creativity in their new
jingles, saying: "This is the greatest success we have recorded in the rebranding Nigeria project." She further assured the participants that the ministry would ensure that its jingles on rebranding
project were replaced with the ones on Heir Apparent once the correction on the Naija word
was effected. Also speaking, Bonat Tagwi, who represented the Director General of National Orientation
Agency (NOA), Dr Idi Farouk, sponsors of the reality show, said the programme was meant to
replicate government's effort towards the young, whereby the ideals of leadership would be
inculcated on them.

2buff: The Tie...
https://www.mountainandsackett.com/productcart/pc/catalog/regimentOA_sm.jpg

I hate ties.
And they look terrible on anyone that isn't shaped like a stick.
I have one of the largest heads around, guaranteed. This goes for my neck, and especially my chest.
I look a heck of a lot better leaving my first 1 or 2 shirt buttons unbuttoned (or 3 depending on the occasion tongue ), exposing a bit of my chest and chain.
Throw a suit on that, and I just set-finish.

But then there is always that event or that meeting that requires you put on a freaking tie.
And then begins the suffocation, asphyxiation and, as a result, the subtle crankiness on my part that stretches right through the duration of me wearing that most-abhorred clothing accessory.

Who thought it right to impose this grave evil as a necessity upon corporate fashion for men?
Women are fortunate to have all sorts of more relaxed options, and certainly NO BLOODY TIES!! angry angry angry

igbo2011: Ngozi Okonjo Iweala Said Wal-mart Is Coming To Nigeria, Good Or Bad?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0I6m8LEXm4

Go to 4:18 on the video. What do you think about this?

I think it is a BAD idea. They will come to Nigeria and import almost everything from China then they will export their revenue out of Nigeria. This will drain the foreign exchange of Nigeria. This is very bad news, we must not allow this to happen. It will also destroy the local economies and will leave thousands of people out of jobs. Wal-Mart will have prices lower than most market so the markets will go down.

It would only be good if 90% of the things sold at Wal-Mart are made in Nigeria.

Wal-Mart is in China but everything is made in China so it is good. But it wouldn't work in Nigeria IMO.

Even India doesn't want Wal-Mart.

LiteratureRe: Achebe's Things Fall Apart Named One Of 50 Most Influential Books by mandsignal(m): 8:18am On May 22, 2012
bestview: Things Fall Apart, the classic novel by Africa’s foremost novelist Chinua Achebe, has been named one of the “fifty most influential books of the last 50 years.”

The selection was made by a group called “SuperScholar.” Achebe’s first novel, published in 1958 and translated into more than sixty languages, is one of several novels by other world acclaimed writers. Other novels on the list include Toni Morrison’s Beloved, Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses, Joseph Heller’s Catch-22, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Achebe, who is the David and Marianna Fisher University Professor of Africana Studies at Brown University in Providence, RI, is the author of five novels, several volumes of poetry as well as essay collections. His latest book, There Was A Country: A Personal History of Biafra, will be published in September, 2012.

50 Most Influential Books of the Last 50 (or so) Years

In compiling the books on this list, the editors at SuperScholar have tried to provide a window into the culture of the last 50 years. Ideally, if you read every book on this list, you will know how we got to where we are today. Not all the books on this list are “great.” The criterion for inclusion was not greatness but INFLUENCE. All the books on this list have been enormously influential.

The books we chose required some hard choices. Because influence tends to be measured in years rather than months, it’s much easier to put older books (published in the 60s and 70s) on such a list than more recent books (published in the last decade). Older books have had more time to prove themselves. Selecting the more recent books required more guesswork, betting on which would prove influential in the long run.

We also tried to keep a balance between books that everyone buys and hardly anyone reads versus books that, though not widely bought and read, are deeply transformative. The Grateful Dead and Frank Zappa never sold as many records as some of the “one-hit wonders,” but their music has transformed the industry. Influence and popularity sometimes don’t go together. We’ve tried to reflect this in our list.
