locodemy:Must you invite or beg people to join the party? |
Tritri:It depends on what you are looking for, either capital appreciation or dividend income. I think the current prices are attractive, but they can become more attractive. I hope to get into the market this week. |
zendi:It will be difficult to raise money at this point in time. |
odimbannamdi:No problem. |
Market is currently bloody, one can buy the whole of Skye Bank for about N15 billion which is about the cost of 30 average houses on Banana Island. Buy the whole of FBNH for about N130 billion. Buy the whole of UACN and her subsidiaries like CAPL, UPDC, Grand cereals, Livestock feeds, Portland paints, UAC foods etc for N33 billion. Buy the whole of UAC property and their real-estate portfolio all over the country for just N8.5 billion. These are definitely interesting times. I have lost money, but I pray this trend will continue till the end of this quarter. |
GoldenDr:I have learnt my lesson in a hard way, a young man who got the franchise for waste disposal and management for an area in Lagos around year 2000 invited me to partner with him but I declined. I thank God for what he has done for me, but this guy has made a killing from the trash business. The guy has bought 6 houses in the last 15 years and also has a fleet of trucks. He has also diversified into waste recycling on the outskirt of Lagos. |
goldenboyofpsy:Job openings due to growth and expansion of businesses in most sectors of the economy are currently on sabbatical, let us keep hope alive till the third quarter of 2016. |
Sowl:@ GoldenDr, teachers and the moderator, I am very sorry for derailing this thread. But since this a thread for job seekers, it will not be out place if we discuss some of the reasons why jobs are scarce and how we can create opportunities for ourselves. Agriculture is a goldmine, but unfortunately the guys making a killing from this sector are Indians, Lebanese, South African etc. The majority shareholders of Olams, Chi Farms, Presco, Okomu just to mention a few are foreigners. These companies make billions of Naira as PAT every year. What type of training, support and structure does the average Nigerian farmer need in order to move his agric-business to the next level. A lawyer who invested in Okomu went home with dividend of over N100 million in 2014. If you look at Abraham Maslow hierarchy of needs, we have feeding, shelter, clothing, self actualization, I am sorry i cannot remember the last one. Shelter or housing is an important human need, we currently have a deficit of over 18 million housing units in Nigeria. How many Nigerians are living in conducive environment. The high-end of the property market is currently saturated and over-priced, but we have a growth potential in the low-cost-housing sector. Housings units of between N2.5 million to N10 million are in high demand by the working class population in Nigeria. The real-estate sector is huge, we have the artisans, developers, builders, architects, surveyors, investors, marketers, buyers, lawyers, financiers, if governments and investors plan to build just 1 million housing units within 2 years, the multiplier effects of this investment will definitely create wealth and job opportunities for Nigerians. |
Sowl:We may not be able to exhaust our crude oil in the next 50 years, but the crude oil may become worthless in 50 years. What is the size of our Sovereign Wealth Fund, which ought to have been funded from income derived from our natural resources. Countries that 15% of our population have more than $500 billion in their SWF. The greatest asset of any nation is in her human resources/capital, that is why no nation can develop beyond the cognitive potentials of her teachers/citizens. We need to ask ourselves, how functional is the education in our country, what is the relationship between what we learn/teach in school with what the street/society needs, what is our attitude towards life-long education, what plans do we have as a nation for the next 50 years, in most cases success is not an accident/miracle but happens through deliberate plan, strategy, hard-work, persistence, patience and finally God factor or favour. But in this part of the world we always emphasize on the God factor or divine factor. Our leaders are mentally lazy, unfortunately the young generation are learning fast from the older generation. Someone said God will not solve our problems in Nigeria, because he has equipped us with what we need to solve the problem which we have created for ourselves. |
Sowl:What is your definition of the right platform? If you have the resources, I will advice you to enrol for the Aspiring Entrepreneur Programme of Fate Foundation. The 3 months course I did at Fate Foundation about 10 years ago, opened my eyes to opportunities and possibilities. Can you also list some of the unexplored goldmines in Nigeria? I am looking at housing/real-estate, education/training,agriculture and waste management. Yes waste management, although people say we should leave trash for LAWMA, we cannot allow LAWMA and its franchisees to continue making the money from Lagos trash. |
GoldenDr:I am not praying for that now, but if it happens we will definitely put on our thinking cap and think out of the box. Someone said we do not have a thinking cap, but if that is the case we may need to loan one. |
Sowl:Thanks for your wonderful insight and suggestions. I am very sure you are not a teacher, but if you are one that means you have a great interest in political economy and business policy. SMEs are the backbone of any economy, they are also the largest employers of labour in Nigeria. Businesses with net-worth of less than a N1 million can be classified as micro-businesses, those with net-worth of N5 million to N50 million are small businesses, while those between N50 million to N500 million are medium enterprises. You will find out that most businesses and employees are found in this sector. The questions we need to ask are these. 1. How come our SMEs cannot grow to become big businesses and MNCs after decades of being in business. 2.How come the cost of funds are so high in Nigeria. 3.Why are Nigerians not investing in our economy. 4. Why are Nigerian corporate executives so corrupt, that they always run down their organisations eg Cadbury, Unilever, Nigeria Breweries just to mention a few. 5. Why is government not giving start-ups and small businesses tax holiday? 6. When will government start investing in infrastructures and others facilities that will reduce the cost of doing business? 7. When will the average Nigerian employee who is lucky to get a job in the big companies, become entrepreneurial so that he can set-up a small businesses that can employ a minimum of 5 employees. 8. When will the average Nigerian become interested in the dynamics of political economy, finance, investment, business and technology. 9. When will our country be blessed with sincere and forward thinking leaders and managers. 10. When will Nigerians be in charge of the driver's seat of the Nigerian economy, the people in charge of our economy are the Indians, Lebanese, Chinese, South African, American etc. What we need now is FDIs and not portfolio investors who are more or less short term investors who do not create substantial value to our economy. |
GoldenDr:I am not an atheist either, but i lean towards agnostic theism. I believe we have all it takes to succeed as a nation, but it take both prayer and action. The nation did not invest and diversify the economy during the era of boom, now that the price of crude oil in the international market fell by almost 70% we are now in dire need of resources and fund to run and manage the economy. Do you know that a company in the oil and gas sector sacked 50% of its employees and also reduced the remuneration of those they did not sack by 50%. For every employee that is sacked, the landlord will be affected, the school where his children attend will be affected, his church and pastor will be affected, the extended family will be affected, all these will have a negative multiplier effect on the economy. I just do not know how government is going to kick-start and stimulate this economy. This is my layman's opinion, i hope economists in the house will share their informed thought on the lingering state of the economy and the nation at large. |
https://www.nairaland.com/2641627/how-been-surviving-without-job Great thread, unfortunately the number of unemployed graduates and sacked experienced workers is on the increase. A friend who is a management staff at visafone lost his job almost 3 weeks ago, a neighbour who works at Oando withdrew his 3 kids from a highbrow school to a pocket-friendly school. We need to commit affairs of our country into God's hands, business owners and their customers are not smiling at all. We still have outstanding debt of over 500k in our primary school section and almost 700k in our secondary school section for 1st term which ended on 18th December 2015. I have tried all tricks to make the debtors pay up, but the response is not encouraging. School owners/managers who have zero to negligible debt profile in their schools should please share the tricks which they are using during this period of global economic brouhaha and business uncertainty. |
okerekeukachi:Good morning, can you remind me of what he said. |
ukay2:Write a mail to the customer service and copy the MD, you can get this from their website. In what areas are you not enjoying their services? What types of stocks do you have in your portfolio? Which of their branches did you open your stock account. Do you have another stockbroker? The types of stock in your portfolio, may determine how fast your stock can be converted to cash. It is also advise-able to have more than one broker, so that you can always compare their services. Always copy others whenever to write a mail to your account officer. But if after trying all these you still have cause for complaints, please transfer your stock to another stockbroker. Some stockbrokers do not like dealing with small investors because they believe they are problematic and not too profitable. |
ukay2:Investment One, happens to be one of my stockbrokers and I am enjoying their service. Have you complained to your accoutt officer about your reservations about their services. The commission is about 1.3%. |
Thatitan234:But i doubt if you can find any that operates from Iyana Ipaja axis, you need to come to Ikeja or Island |
sirflav:where have you been, just found out that you and sky registered on nairaland few months ago? Who are your stockbrokers? Do you work for a stockbrokerage firm? Can you share some of investment books you have read with me? What is your investment philosophy? Can you share testimonies of the successes you experienced through your investment strategies? Thank you and have a great week. |
currentprice:The volume of stock bought by anyone is of little importance to me, the volume of shares bought is just a number like your age, your weight, nos of children, nos of stocks in your portfolio, and some of us do not need to nor have the luxury of time to confirm if figures are right of wrong. What I am interested in are the reasons for the stock purchase purchase and where the investor sees the company in 5 years or more. |
sky2891:Good to see that we have some long term investors here. How long have you been accumulating FBNH shares? What value did you see in the stock? I hope you have multiple streams of income, because relying solely on the stockmarket or one source of income is highly dangerous to your financial well-being. I was able to increase my FBNH holding by 100k units between November and December 2015. |
Thatitan234:You should be able to get to stockbrokers at Ikeja, Investment one have an office Maryland |
manie:Transportation is a lucrative business in Lagos, government and private sectors operators with experience in transport business and fund managers can set-up a transport fund of a minimum of N50 billion. Lagos state government can have maximum of 10% share in the fund, no private investor should have more than 5% and Lagosian can own 55% share of this fund. Same can also be done with LAWMA, Water Corporation etc. |
MsGlobalwonder:My younger brother got a sub-franchise from NURTW so I have more than an average idea of how things are. You need to consider, rush hour traffic, age of the bus, traffic jam and time of the day. You can get a new Tata bus for N14 million only, this N14 million can be made within 10 to 12 months. |
naptu2:City bus was very good in 2000, they later diversified into inter-state transportation after their fracas with the NURTW touts in Lagos. |
MsGlobalwonder:It is not possible to make N3million in a month, a good bus should be able to make 50k in a day and 300k in a week. Income per month for a bus in very good working condition should be about N1.2 million. |
MsGlobalwonder:I just watched it on TV, the spokesman for NURTW said the blue BRT buses on that route make a monthly turnover of between N120million and N150 million. |
BABANGBALI:Are you sure, my mobile line is airtel |
Kikero112:I am in Lagos. |

lofty900:Since MTN is the new owner of visafone, I have no choice but to do away with the visafone line which I use for browsing. Can somebody suggest a good network for my computer apart from MTN. |

Now, that is investment!
