The ruler of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah has banned the public celebration of Christmas in his country, Daily Mail reports.




The wealthy Sultan recently warned residents of the tiny nation that failure to adhere to the rules will attract up to five years in jail.

The report states that the leader’s decision is informed by the fear that the religious holiday will affect the faith of his country.

The rule also states that Muslims caught celebrating Christmas, and non-Muslims who are discovered organising celebrations, could face the lengthy prison sentence.

While non-Muslims are allowed to celebrate the holiday within their own communities, they are mandated not to disclose their plans to the nation’s Muslims – which make up 65 per cent of the nation’s population.



The nation has about 20 per cent non-Muslims, including substantial Buddhist and Christian communities.

A statement by the country’s Ministry of Religious Affairs read: ”These enforcement measures are…intended to control the act of celebrating Christmas excessively and openly, which could damage the aqidah (beliefs) of the Muslim community.”

Before now, Brunei prohibits propagating religion other than Islam to a Muslim, and breaking this is a violation of the penal code of the state’s laws.

Also banned in the country is put putting up Christmas trees, singing religious songs and sending Christmas greetings.

The report quoted the Imams in the Borneo Bulletin saying: ”Some may think that it is a frivolous matter and should not be brought up as an issue. But as Muslims, we must keep it [following other religions’ celebrations] away as it could affect our Islamic faith.”

Honestly so i tot but how very wrong i am.

I am a guy with very high taste cos cheating on my spouse or lady is not even what i think about. A man must be with a lady that turns him on sexually, a lady that has the sexual endowments he craves for..this is the first step to "reducing" the possibility of philandering.

My friend times have changed, I cook at home on weekends, baby sit and also wash my clothes whenever time permits. Same here, getting married early in other to have your grandchildren at 50 can only be determined by God. A lady in my church got married at 24 and did not not have a child until 14 years after marriage while some of her friends who got married at 30 have gotten their own babies. There should not be a competition for the youngest to have children, but as responsible and informed people we should invest and build solid foundation that will give our children a good head-start in life. Some of the endowment funds, trust accounts and investments made on behalf of my children should definitely by His grace give my boys a good head-start whether I am alive or not.

My wife gave birth to a baby boy, 3 months after our wedding. Currently blessed with 2 boys aged 5 and 2, I have friends who got married 8 years before I did whose children are younger than mine. The most important thing is to stick to what works for you. I will advice young men to work hard, have big dreams, strive to achieve your dreams, enjoy life, know God if you believe in him and do not settle for less.

I was discussing this "right time" issue with a friend recently.

Reason was an acquaintance who died this year.

He was too busy with other things in life. Trying to uplift certain family members among others.

He was finally engaged but died suddenly. A total shock to everyone. He was in his 40s.

Had he married at age 30, he might have had kids ranging from 16 to 10 years old. Old enough to remember him.

We pray for God's blessings, protection and long life.

Too bad, the guy died in his mid 40s without getting married nor having a child. I think the guy had issues impregnating ladies, or his family members who living on his largese did not want him to get married because once he is married and have more responsilities he may not be able to dole out money to his extended family.

Osu caste system is an ancient practice in Igbo land, in which somebody or a family is considered to be a property to the gods of the land they are considered sacred thus some are banished and don't have any business with anyone. Most of them are extremely beautiful and very intelligent that's why the believe the belong to the gods and the posses special powers. That's in ancient Igbo land before civilization. Most villages in Igbo land have abolished this practice due to religion and civilization but some still consider this practice because of the fear of wrath of the gods. OSU normally marry themselves and if a freeborn marries an osu you are forbid to have a child with that person and you will equally be banished from the land.. Hope you are satisfied.

G What did you put in place for the schools to run? Lagos is a metropolis that is why ISL can effectively be managed without hiccups are you asking a federal school in maiduguri or benue or ekiti or ebonyi that has scanty federal infrastructures coupled with comatose power supply to generate money and pay fees? If you compare Faan with universities in terms of revenue generation and workers buoyancy you need help.....do you know that some universities pay supporting lecturers with IGR? they maintain school environment, security, hostel renovation and even employ some supporting staffs. Bro, the government should just do the needful. You gave a man a cutlass and ask him to challenge a lion...thinking you have empowered him (cutlass) is laughable.

Maybe you should ask the University administrators and the staff union that decided to have a staff school, which the size of their financial muscles cannot support nor sustain. If they do not have the core advantages and know-how for the establishment and running of a private primary and secondary school, it makes business and management sense for them to send their children to schools within the community rather than establishing such schools and expect FG to help with funding and payment of salaries.


I am not comparing Universities with FAAN, but compared the staff unions in both organisations. Do you know that some staff unions in the universities get loans running into hundreds of millions from the bank, nothing stops them from using such loans to establish a school for their children which they love.


Which supporting staff are they paying from IGR, that NUC does not have in their records as part of the labour and manpower in the Universities. These are just avenues for some University administrators to deplete income from IGR, what we need in our universities and other organisations is transparency and accountability. Education business is a goldmine, maybe the time has come for the University staff unions, cooperative societies and University administrator to harness the opportunities provided by these need gaps in the society.

Please endeavour to always read, digest and comprehend before making comments. I am talking about a university staff school making that sum. A university cannot have a staff school which charges fees and expect the FG to pay for the running cost. The school fees paid by parents in these staff schools goes to the university and not the FG.

What are the infrastructures put in place for them to think on? Let me tell you, IGR is used to pay some teaching staff (supporting lecturers) who are not under Govt payroll. Maintaining and beatification of the school environs is catered for with IGR. In my school IGR was used to erect lecture theatres, botanical gardens, renovation of hostels, construction of hostels etc. If you want to use IGR to start paying teachers.....hahahahah...plus their benefits? Oga seems you don't know how the university functions or you don't understand the university structure. Go to ur physical planning unit and the projects catered for by IGR. In the end there will be hike in school fees there will be uproar and uprising and the comatose educational sector will receive another heavy blow. Mind you many universities runs...SMSE...yet the operational cost of doing business is phewwwww...think again? at the end your thinking cap will result to a bald head....

Maybe they need to open their books for scrutiny, corporate organisations will not mind assisting with some infrastructures if administrators are accountable and prudent. It does not make good business sense when you are barely struggling to survive with the subvention allocated to the university by NUC and the university still decided to set-up another organisation that was not intended to be self-sustaining. The universities have the brand names, which they need to put into productive and economical uses.

It's non easy to stop parasitism or feeding bottle mentality. They should be given given a deadline to restructure.

But resources are now dwindling, the schools should give account of the money earned over the years. I am a product of a university staff school and my school currently makes over N1 billion per annum, and they expect FG to pay salaries and invest in infrastructure. The schools need to be accountable, set-up endowment funds that will be managed my professional fund managers. The schools should also improve on their corporate governance, by having boards that consist of the parents, old students, university administrators and business leaders in the community.

Can't the government be creative? These are qualified well trained personnel that can serve and ready to work.

But they were not employed by the government, I think the university administrators are the one that needs to be creative.

Why did they establish schools which they never planned to fund or invest in, as I have said they can learn from the staff schools of FAAN. The schools were established and funded by the staff union and their cooperative society. These schools are now very profitable, and if care is not take the supervising ministry may want to hijack the schools from the staff union.

From the article it's been clear the directive to sack the embattled lecturers was given by the last administration. The reasons for that decision we don't know. But a new administration is on board and since government is a continuum, it very much behoves of the current administration to address the issues raised by the union body. It will be foolish for anyone to now blame GEJ over an issue to has been updated to the knowledge of the current administration. I'm summary, the ball is now in PMB court.

The times are really hard, and people are already losing their jobs in an alarming rate. We can't afford to have another 2000 people joining that miserable job market. Losing one's job at this moment na die.....

The teachers will not lose their jobs if the University administrators and staff unions who established the staff schools put on their thinking caps and strategise on how to make the schools they established to be self-sustaining and maybe profitable.

If the teachers are sacked, does that mean the schools will be closed down? I think the schools will still be in operation, but FG will no longer be responsible for the funding of such schools. Corruption takes place in almost every organisation in Nigeria, University administrators should give account of the schools fees by parents in the last 10 years.


The primary and secondary schools of Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria in Lagos are funded by the staff union cooperative society, and these schools are self-sustaining and highly profitable.

The University administrators do not have to sack the teachers in their primary and secondary schools, they just need to devise ways of making these primary and secondary schools to be self-sustaining and profitable.

International School UNILAG, makes a revenue of about N1 billion per annum, a school cannot be making that sum of money and you expect the Federal Government to be saddled with the responsibility of payment of teachers salaries and maintenance of facilities.

but sadly, in 9ja EVERY single soul daydream of being their own boss, when they have absolutely no clue/talent/education/knowledge etc as to what it takes to starting a business and making ends meet, let alone be profitable.

You can always get your message across without insults or abusing anyone. The best ways the big boss can help his employees is by giving then the skill and attitude to be financially literate and investment savvy. I doubt if 95% of his employees can replicate what the company achieved if they are to start their own businesses. The entrepreneur is the visioner of the enterprise, risk bearer and coordinators of the various factors of production. Since the workers do not have the entreprenuerial drive and mindset of their boss, the best he can do is to equip them with the skill and attitude to be financially independent, financially literate, investment savvy and having the millionaire mindset. A lawyer in his mid 50s got a dividend of over N100 million in a company in 2014, while a top banker got close to N600 million dividend in 2013. Most employers will not want their employees to have the millionaire mindset, imagine if those guys are getting additional dividends of $500k rather than the $100k given to them by their boss. Their children can inherit the investment and dividends, but cannot inherit the 100k bonus or salary. The big boss has done well for his act of kindness and generosity, but can do better by equipping the employees with the skills, tools, attitudes and processes towards building a lasting and an enduring wealth.
