There is massive looting of palliatives grains and other stuff just now in Birnin kebbi Kara Market. The remaining palliatives grains means for peaple were diverted or sold to Marketers in Birnin kebbi.

The shops in Kara Market where the palliatives were hide and kept were attacked by some angry youth with looters making away with foodstuffs and other items.

Armed policemen on guard duty at the market fired gunshots in the air and chased away the youth. For me, the officials that diverted the palliatives should be arrested and prosecuted

The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) has announced that it will conclude the ongoing recruitment process into the Federal Fire Service (FFS) on June 15, 2024.

The Minister of Interior and chairman of the Board, Olubumi Tunji-Ojo, said the new date was in line with the Board’s reviewed timeline for the conduct of employment in the paramilitary Services under its purview.

Tunji-Ojo who spoke through the secretary of the CDCFIB, Ja’afaru Ahmed, at the end of its quarterly review meeting with heads of the four paramilitary agencies under its supervision, said shortlisted candidates would be requested to visit the Board’s portal via messages to their emails and mobile phone numbers.

The minister urged the public to ignore messages on social media inviting them to pay some amount for placement, adding that they were from fraudsters.

He also said the Board considered 118 cases of erring officers of the four Services under its purview and took appropriate disciplinary measures.

The summary of cases and resolution of the Board made available to Daily Trust after the meeting indicated that 48 officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service, 21 officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service, 12 officers of the Federal Fire Service and 37 officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were involved.

PoliticsFG Subsidises Hajj Fares With N90bn by ManirBK(op): 10:09pm On Mar 29, 2024
The federal government has released a sum of N90 billion
to subsidise the 2024 pilgrimage to the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia, Daily Trust has learnt.
An impeccable source within the National Hajj Commission
of Nigeria (NAHCON) revealed this to Daily Trust on
Thursday.
The source, who asked not to be named, noted that without
this intervention, each of the intending pilgrims would have
been requested to add at least N3.5 million to the initial
fare which was pegged at N4.9 million.
A top official at the Presidency also confirmed that the
federal government “actually provided some financial
support for the hajj exercise”.
Recall that the NAHCON had, in December last year, fixed a
fare of N4.9 million per pilgrim based on the exchange rate
of N897 to a dollar.
In announcing the fare at that time, the commission had
quoted the sum of N4,899,000 for southern pilgrims;
N4,699,000 for those from the North; while pilgrims from
Yola and Maiduguri centres were asked to pay N4,679,000.
Through a statement issued on Sunday by its
spokesperson, Fatima Usara, the hajj commission had
raised the fare by N1, 918,032.91, jacking up the total
amount to N6.8 million.
The commission had also said intending pilgrims had up to
yesterday (March 28, 2024) to make payment for the
spiritual exercise.
The NAHCON had attributed the latest hike in hajj fare to
the foreign exchange crisis which Nigeria has been battling
for months.
The NAHCON’s source told Daily Trust that if the
commission had received up to N230 billion as support
from the federal government, there would have been no
need to ask intending pilgrims “to add a dime.”
“The forex crisis has caused a lot of problems. That is why
the Hajj Commission has asked intending pilgrims to pay
the extra amount of N1.9 million each. The commission
actually needed N230 billion to sort out the fare differential
caused by the forex crisis.
“The N90 billion support which was provided by the
government was announced in the presence of reporters
during the inauguration of the board and management of
the Hajj Commission which was held at the Office of the
Vice Presidency on February 28, 2024. But they (reporters)
were asked not to report it. That was why no newspaper
carried the report. Or did you see it in any reports?”
“If the intending pilgrims pay ₦1.9 million, it is then it can
be balanced,” the source further stated.
He said the NAHCON had also contacted state governors
“to subsidise the hajj fare for the intending pilgrims in their
respective states. Kano has responded by subsiding it by
N500,000 for each pilgrim.
“By the previous calculation, the N90 billion given by the
federal government can only subsidise 19,000 intending
pilgrims by ₦3.5 million. But by spreading it on 50,000
pilgrims, it reduces it to N1.9 million; meaning that the
federal government has subsidised each pilgrim by ₦1.6
million before each intending pilgrim was asked to add the
remaining N1.9 million,” he said.
A presidency source, who also spoke to Daily Trust
yesterday, said it was true that the federal government had
provided what he called a “huge financial support” for this
year’s hajj exercise.
Asked to confirm whether the federal government released
up to N90 billion as support for the pilgrimage, the official
simply said: “that might not be far from the truth.”
He added, “Of course, the federal government has offered
support for the pilgrims because the pilgrims have been
lamenting.
“Normally, any support that the government is giving to any
faith, whether the Christian faith or the Muslim faith, the
government does not like to announce it openly so that it
will not appear as if the government is favouring on faith.”

PoliticsNiger Republic Reopens Border With Nigeria by ManirBK(op): 1:04pm On Mar 22, 2024
Niger Republic has reopened its border with Nigeria in the regions of Diffa, Tahoua, Maradi and Dosso.

The land border between the two neighbors was closed following the coup d’état of July 26 and the ECOWAS sanctions that followed.

In a radio message broadcast on social networks, on Thursday, the Nigerien Ministry of Interior instructed the governors of these border regions to reauthorize the reopening at exactly 12:00 midnight.

The ministry also directed the affected governors to strengthen controls and security along the 1,500 kilometers stretch land demarcation.

Nigeria’s border was opened weeks ago after the lifting of ECOWAS sanctions during a summit in Abuja, but Niger did not immediately reciprocate the gesture.

However, the border of the uranium-rich nation to its neighbor Benin is still closed on the Niger side despite swift implementation of the ECOWAS directive by Beninese authorities.

Niger transitional authorities had cited security reasons as basis for not reopening the border with the southern neighbors.

The Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, on Thursday, began the distribution of over N12bn worth of assorted grains as Ramadan palliatives to residents.

From the Ramadan palliatives, 9,900 bags of rice and 9,500 bags of grains would go to teachers, 4,000 bags of rice and 3,400 bags of grains would go to the state’s ministries, departments and agencies while 1,000 bags of rice and 1,000 bags of grains would go to Islamic scholars, among others.

The governor said the Ramadan palliatives distribution was fully sponsored by the state government, and assured residents that another batch of palliative was being expected from the Federal Government.

Speaking at the launch of the exercise in Birnin Kebbi, Idris said any government official found tampering with the distribution exercise would be severely dealt with.

He said, “We have started receiving consignments from them.

A sign of good leadership is for leaders to be alive to their responsibilities.

“As a teacher and a unionist, my government don’t owe workers salaries, gratuity or death benefits. In the spirit of fairness and magnanimity, I have directed the payment of this month’s workers’ salaries from today, and I have already approved the payment of the 2023/2024 leave grant for all categories of workers.

“Workers are my constituency and teachers are my backbone, hence the need to do everything to protect their interests.”

PoliticsKano, Katsina, Sokoto, 4 Others Spend N28.3bn On Ramadan Feeding by ManirBK(op): 2:54pm On Mar 20, 2024
As Ramadan fast progresses, seven states of the federation have budgeted over N28. 3 billion to feed residents during the period, figures released by the states and put together by Daily Trust revealed.

The states include Katsina, Sokoto, Kano, Jigawa, Kebbi, Niger and Yobe.

It was gathered that many other states, especially in the North, have earmarked various sums for the project but have refused to make the actual amount public.

This has elicited anxiety in many quarters, with some clerics calling for accountability, considering the humongous amount set aside.

They said even though it was not entirely wrong to support the less privileged to feed during Ramadan because of the reward therein, they nonetheless called for caution concerning the possibility of abusing the process.

Katsina State topped the chart for the feeding programme by budgeting N10 billion.

Sokoto earmarked N6.7 billion,
Kano set aside N6 billion,
Jigawa N2.83 billion,
Kebbi N1.5 billion,
Niger N976 million
, and
Yobe N178 million respectively.

Governor Dikko Umar Radda, who disclosed the amount for the Ramadan feeding while inaugurating the committee that will oversee the distribution of the grains to the beneficiaries, said the gesture was to support citizens of the state.

In Sokoto, Governor Ahmed Aliyu said that the state expended N6.7 billion for the provision of Ramadan and other packages to the people of the state.

Also, the Kano State government said it is targeting four million people in the 2024 Ramadan feeding programme across the 44 local government areas of the state.

The Commissioner for Information and Home Affairs, Baba Dantiye, said the aim was to feed the less privileged.

Speaking to a national daily, Dantiye said the densely populated Kano metropolis, which is made up of eight LGAs has 90 special centres that include mosques, remand centres, almajiri schools, and hospitals.

He said: “In each centre, we have three women who cook and three men that provide security so that people don’t tamper with the food or cause stampedes.

“In each centre, there are two bags of rice to feed at least 200 people, that is 100 people per bag; there are also varieties such as beans cake and pap and other assorted food being cooked daily and is served between 6.30pm and 7.00p.m targeted at the most-needy.”

The Commissioner for Information in Jigawa, Sagir Musa, said in a statement that the Ramadan feeding programme will be implemented through 609 feeding centres, with a focus on providing three different food items to 182,700 poor and vulnerable people daily.

He said there will be dedicated feeding centres to be established at each of the state’s ten tertiary institutions.

He said that approximately 3.8 million vulnerable persons would benefit from the feeding programme throughout the Ramadan period.

Apart from approving a budget of N2.83 billion for the special feeding, the commissioner said the state executive council also allocated N1.125 billion for emergency procurement of additional rice and spaghetti to ensure adequate food supply across the state.

Kebbi’s N1. 5bn for the Ramadan feeding programme will be dispensed in 69 feeding centres, it was learnt.

The distribution will target three mosques in each of the 21 local government areas, according to the Special Adviser to the governor on Religious Affairs, Engr. Imran Usman-Abdulrahman.

In Niger State, the state Commissioner for Information, Binta Mamman, said that the N976 million for Ramadan feeding in the eight emirate councils of the state was timely.

She said assorted grains have been procured to be distributed to all the 25 local government areas, emirate councils, religious leaders, security agencies, and political parties in the state.

Yobe State governor, Mai Mala Buni, had also approved the sum of N187 million for the feeding of the less privileged and the vulnerable throughout this year’s Ramadan fast in the state.

Accountability key to success of the programme – Cleric

Malam Ahmad Abdullahi, a cleric in Bauchi, said while there is nothing wrong in catering for the people, the issue of accountability must be emphasised.

“Feeding the needy is an acceptable norm all over the world, especially during Ramadan.

“In fact, in some countries, including non -Muslim countries, they give meal tickets to unemployed persons as a temporary measure.

“But in Nigeria, we always have issues with these kinds of initiatives. Some people take advantage of it to steal; others produce poor quality meals.

“So, I want to advise that the governors should fear Allah. The contractors should also fear Allah,” he said.

Speaking to Daily Trust in Abuja, the Chief Imam of Nasirul-Lahi-Li-Fatih, Society of Nigeria (NASFAT) Mosque, Utako, Abuja and founder, Ashraaf Islamic Foundation, Sheik Sharafudeen Abdulsalam Aliagan, said the gesture is good and encouraging.

He said that somebody who wakes up in the morning and goes out to look for what to eat is different from someone observing fasting as a student or a vulnerable person.

“So, instead of these people to start going about begging or doing some very stressful work during the days of Ramadan, the well-to-do, those whom Allah has blessed, Islamic organisations, good individuals, philanthropists, according to the principle of Islam can assist those needy by giving them food, money and other lawful gifts to make the fasting easy for them,” Aliagan said.

He also said that thousands of people are being fed by NASFAT and other Muslim organisations across the country, especially students and other vulnerable persons that must be supported to enhance easier observance of Ramadan fasting.

When asked about the fears that the billions of naira earmarked for the exercise may be mismanaged due to corruption, the renowned cleric said this may not be possible due to the glory of the month of Ramadan.

He said that, while it is expected that those that may be asked to manage the resources would be competent and god-fearing people, it is also expected that those that the monies may be entrusted with would want to earn Allah’s reward and not be engaged in mismanagement of the Ramadan feeding programme monies or other resources.
